this is "nightline." >> tonight, across america, parents and children are having difficult conversations about race, justice, and the role of police. >> how often do you think about being black? >> every day. >> talks often held only in the privacy of a family home. >> how often do you think about being white? >> uh -- >> tonight we're bringing together a diverse group of americans. >> he's gonna get you, take you to jail. >> face-to-face in a very frank dialogue. the latest installment of our series "america in black and white." >> this is the way i walk in my kitchen. >> michael strahan in the kitchen with the rock chatting about fatherhood and the possibility of running for president. >> i would do it.

good evening. thank you for joining is. grace and justice. one of the perplexing problems of our time. debated passionately by new generations. right now we've all seen the latest cell phone videos, all been moved by the carnage in dallas. listening closely you can hear the conversations going on in homes across america. tonight as a part of our continuing series "america in black and white," an earnest glimpse inside those private, sometimes painful, conversations. two families living only miles apart. >> what's your favorite flavor? >> swedish fish. >> reporter: both boys have dedicated fathers. during the summer before seventh grade. >> wild turkeys, they just hang out. >> reporter: each man is middle class, married, college educated. >> do you know how to skip them? >> reporter: when it comes to the issue of race, these fathers and sons live in very different worlds.

>> how often do you think about being black? >> every day. >> how often do you think about being white? >> uh -- i really don't. >> reporter: we first met daniel kay, his son aidan. solomon jones and solomon jr. in december 2014. >> if you get stopped by police, even if you feel they stopped you for no reason, just be polite, get out of the situation so you can come home. >> reporter: in the wake of the ferguson verdicts, a national moment of reflection reached into american living rooms. >> there's a part of me that looks at him and sees him as this innocent little boy. and i hate the thought of having to have conversations like this. but there are people who are living this. >> reporter: a year and a half has passed since that conversation. the boys are getting bigger. and soar the country's problems. in one week, louisiana. minnesota.

in dallas. tragedy and outrage. creating a fresh wound in the fierce debate over race, policing, and the argument over whose lives matter. >> i know that americans are struggling right now with what we've witnessed over the past week. >> reporter: for parents like daniel and solomon, the question, how much of this hurt do you expose your child to? >> i haven't seen the videos but i've definitely heard about the shootings. >> did you see the video of the man who died? >> yes. >> in louisiana? >> yes. >> the man who died in minnesota? >> yes. >> how did that hit you? >> pretty hard. it was like -- i guess sad to think about like what if that happened to my dad? >> reporter: 11-year-old solomon jr. serious child, good student. but his father worries there could be a moment when that won't matter. >> for some folk they'll say, oh, you're scaring the boy, you are making him paranoid. you say what? >> i say, i'm making him prepared. we are not people who hate the

police. it's when you go someplace else and the people only know that you're black. they don't know that solomon's an honor roll student. all they know is that you're black. so i want my son to be prepared for that fact. >> reporter: listen for the differences in word association. >> hoodie. >> hoodie -- i don't know. >> go grab the hoodie sort of a thing, like i don't think of it as being a negative consaying. >> hoodie. >> i think about trayvon martin. >> reporter: the shooting of 17-year-old trayvon martin. most black parents' deepest fear. turning the hoodie into a symbol, the danger of being a black teenaged boy. a fear my cloeg sunny hostin knows all too well. >> i have a 13-year-old, a 6 foot tall black kid. i have to have this conversation with him about how to interact if he ever has a police encounter. >> reporter: difficult conversations like these mostly

only happen among those we feel most comfortable with. >> i wanted to go around the room. >> reporter: so last night we invited a diverse group of americans from different parts of the country, this time to have the conversation together. >> you see a police officer, you go in the other direction. you nod, you smile, you do whatever you have to do to have no interaction whatever. >> reporter: the father of three, author of many books on race and class. >> we all all kinds of rules with our black boys. you don't go out after night, don't wear a hoodie, sunglasses, don't do anything people can prong their biases and stereotypes of what the dangerous black boy is supposed to look like. >> reporter: those in this room not only black and white but blue. >> let me ask all the officers, how does it make you feel lawrence is telling his kids, if you see a cop, got other way. >> people forget the cops aren't robots, they're human beings. behind that i bleed the same color as everybody else in this room. >> we're all a part of some group. i'm a muslim, a black man, a police officer. i feel like even though you have

greatness in all three groups, a lot of times the best of those groups and the rest of those groups get treated like the worst of those groups. >> how do you account for the statistics that african-american men are at a 2.5 times rate of being shot by a cop or excessive force during a police encounter as opposed to a white guy? >> never once did i have any officer of any race put his vest on strap up his gun belt, put his shirt on, and say, i want to go out there and kill a certain type of person today. >> reporter: he's the founder of blue lives matter in new york city. former officer andy dwyer is a member. he knows firsthand what it's like to lose a loved one in the line of duty, his brother anthony. >> he was 23 years old. chasing a robbery suspect. they got onto the roof, they got into a fight, the guy pushed my brother off the building. subsequently died from that. >> i'm sorry to hear about that.

>> thank you. it definitely heightened my senses and -- to know that any way this can happen. everybody's seen the videos, a guy walks up to the car, the guy opens fire. the cop's just thinking it's a broken taillight. so cops or edge. >> reporter: one of the major flash points in the recent national dialogue has centered on the rallying cry, black lives matter. some people feel the term is inherently divisive, preferring to instead say, all lives matter. >> when you hear black lives matter what does that mean to you? >> among some community, black lives are not valued as much as white lives. i hear someone like former mayor rudy giuliani make ridiculous statements that black lives matter is inherently racist, they're not saying that blacks are better than whites, they're just saying that they matter as well. >> reporter: bedford says it's the unknowns he fears when it comes to interactions with police. >> there is an experience i had where a police officer, i could

see the fear in his eyes. nothing's scarier than being an unarmed person looking at someone who is armed, being frightened of you. >> reporter: bedford and his wife chelsea married two years ago. they have a mixed-race child and a white child from chelsea's previous relationship. she says her eyes were opened to the differences her children may face while she and bedford were dating. >> there were times i was like, you're being paranoid, they're not out to get you, calm down. then we had an experience where he called me and he said, i need you to pick me up from the police station. and i said what? he said, my tags are expired. i pull into the parking lot. i see his car. i see six police officers around his car. they all had their lights on. and i just watched them yank him out of his car and shove him onto the ground. and i could see his face. and they handcuffed him. and i know my husband. you know?

there was a cop kneeling on his back. there was a cop handcuffing him. that was the first time that i thought to myself, this is a problem. >> reporter: for aidan day, it was that first conversation in front of our cameras more than a year ago that opened his eyes. what did you think about the story and a boy's view not far from his view of the world? >> reporter: aidan, now 12 going on 30. >> i thought -- i mean, it was kind of interesting how different the conversation was. i think it's weird wore both 10 years old, we live close to each other, and we're still -- we have such different lives. just because of how we look. >> what did you think of the white family's interaction with race and the conversations they hadn't had? >> i wasn't surprised at all. white fathers don't have to tell their sons to be careful when they deal with the police. i thought that they were honest and i thought that they were real.

>> reporter: back at our face-to-face discussion, officer rasheed says he understands the issue from both sides. >> there's a lot of black police officers who obviously were black before they were police officers. the worst thing that police hear on a daily basis, a parent will look at the police officer and tell their child, he's going to get you, he's going to take you to jail. >> really? >> yes. they do that a lot. that's a problem. a lot of times when we hear that, we'll go to our car and get a coloring book or a teddy bear and say, hey, here's this, you don't have to be afraid of us. even if your parent had that fear, we don't want you to have that fear. >> reporter: so often it's conversations like these, a bridging of gaps, discovery of common ground that can change the way we see each other. >> so far we've gotten along great. will you tell your children, next time you see a cop, don't turn your head and run across the street. say hi, how are you doing, officer? and continue on your way. >> that's a great question.

i still have to balance between, okay, what is the risk that i do in telling my children, wear what you want, approach police officers, and the risk of them encountering somebody who is fearful of a black teenage boy? >> reporter: as far as creating actual change in our society, that's what daniel kay and solomon jones hope for, if not in their lifetimes, in their sons'. >> i have great hope for their generations being the one that says, enough is enough this doesn't even make any sense. >> i hope that my children will have a future that's better than mine. that's what every parent hopes. >> we do hope you'll join us tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. for "the president and the people: a national conversation."
