good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> and i'm kendis gibson. making headlines this thursday morning on "world news now," a powerful start to last night's espy awards with four of the nba's biggest stars with a call to action. they told their fellow pros to get more involved in attempting to heal the nation's racial wounds. more highlights from the show straight ahead. and president obama convened a task force on community policing. they met for four hours hoping to come up with a plan to help keep street police safe. they agreed to a list of priorities but acknowledged there are deep divisions. california air resources board is rejecting a plan by volkswagen to recall passenger cars with three liter diesel engines, saying the plan is engines saying the car maker's plan is incomplete and neglects to see if it will fix the faulty emissions.

i will continue to keep fighting, sucking the marrow out of life as life sucks the marrow out of me. >> it was a colorful speech. a full name of the award is the jimmy v award for perseverance. jimmy v is a former college basketball coach who delivered probably one of the more memorable speeches there while battling cancer in 1993 at the espys. last night sager said he listens to that speech to keep him going. talking about politics now. the world will have to wait one more day to find out who will join donald trump's presidential ticket. >> trump tweeted last night he will announce his running mate tomorrow morning in new york city. the finalist for the vp job huddling with trump and his family in indiana yesterday.

yesterday and last night gingrich said only two people are still in the running, mike pence and himself. >> trump is facing a new round of attacks from hillary clinton. we have the latest. >> reporter: standing inside the illinois old state house where abraham lincoln once proclaimed a house divided against itself cannot stand, hillary clinton called for unity after the shootings in louisiana, minnesota, and dallas. >> america's long struggle with race is far from finished. >> reporter: clinton called for criminal justice reform, gun control and a change in tone sharing in the responsibility. >> i cannot stand here and claim that my words and actions haven't sometimes fuelled the partisanship that often stands in the way of progress. so i recognize i have to do better too. >> reporter: as clinton campaign polls show a tightening race in battleground states like ohio and a closer race than before in florida where clinton previously had a ten point lead, the newest polls were conducted right after after fbi director james comey's

the orlando nightclub where 49 people were shot has been released back to the owners. the owners say getting the club back is bittersweet. she says she's devastated by the attack, especially in a place intended to be safe for the lgbt community. the future of that building is unclear. the owner hopes to reopen the club, perhaps in a new location. now to a frightening scene from western new york state. watch the parking lot here. that car starts going and it doesn't stop. it goes right into the middle of the road and straight across six lanes of traffic. a person in their 80s was behind the wheel. police say the driver lost control and after mistakenly hitting the gas instead of the brake, there was some damage. no word on the driver's condition this morning. it looks like preschoolers who stay up too late pay for it later in life. a new study found preschoolers who typically go to bed by 8:00 p.m. are less likely to obese ten years later than those who went to bed after 9:00.

get involved. no comment from the nfl on yesterday's ruling. we'll turn to the sexual harassment lawsuit featuring gretchen carlson against roger ailes. >> after more than a dozen of former colleagues defended ailes, carlson is sharing her side of the story. here's abc's rebecca jarvis. >> reporter: former fox news anchor, gretchen carlson now speaking out for the first time since filing a sexual harassment lawsuit against her former boss, fox news chair, roger ailes. telling "the new york times," i just wanted to stand up for myself. first and foremost, and i wanted to stand up for other women who maybe faced similar circumstances." >> thanks very much to stronger ailes who runs this corporation. >> reporter: the former "fox and friends" anchor claims her contract was not renewed after she complained she was harassed by ailes and refused his sexual advances. the 50-year-old former miss america telling the times everyone knew how powerful roger ailes was.

i certainly felt intimidated by that. carlson was let go from the network in june when she was informed her contract would not be renewed. it was cold and calculating, she says. it took 30 seconds. there was no thank you for your service of 11 years and no discussion of ratings. ailes, one of the most powerful men in cable news, tells abc news carlson's allegations are false. this is a retaliatory suit for the network's decision not to renew her contract. it was due to the fact that her disappointingly low ratings were dragging down the afternoon lineup. fox releasing handwritten notes carlson sent to ailes last year, thanking him for opportunities and asking for more time on air. when asked by the times why she sent them if she felt she was being harassed she says, i think it's hard when you've been a victim. you keep thinking things are going to get better. now more than a dozen fox news personalities have spoken out in

california, have released video from an officer's body camera showing a traffic stop that turned deadly. some of you might find the images disturbing. after pulling over a truck driven by dylan noble, police say they asked him to step out and show his hands, and that's when they say she appeared to reach for something and shouted to them that he hated his life. the officers fired four shots at noble. they later found that he was not armed. the district attorney and the fbi conducting now separate investigations into that case there in southern california. mourners gathering in st. paul, minnesota, today for the funeral of philando castile. the black man shot by a police officer. his girlfriend live streamed the aftermath of the shooting. police confirmed castile had a permit to carry a gun. his girlfriend said the officer fired while he was reaching for his i.d. crews are battling a fire in los angeles. the flames burned for more than an hour in the hills near a residential community, but fire crews were finally able to stop
