abc7 news begins with breaking news. >> we start at 5:00 with the breaking news from the south bay. >> crews on the christian of a grass fire in a rural part of san jose. our reporter is on the scene. katie? >> crews are here for several hours. the area is very dry. there is extreme fire danger. there are still many firefighters on the scene, up to 70. the fire started around 2:30 this morning. it spread to ten acres quickly. it took firefighters two hours to contain the fire which spread to both sides of the hill and moving toward the park. they are still working on hot spots and it is under investigation.

from the carquinez bridge with road work. it will be cleared right now. westbound five to the bay bridge or if you are headed to the richmond-san rafael it is delay free. >> we have big news this morning for california students after years of delays, the state is moving forward with a land to teach lgbt history at school. jessica castro has the latest. >> there will be an outline put together for what kids will learn, a big step moving california closer for come mying to a law passed back in 2012. there have been multiple delays pushing to repeal the lawyer which asks schools to include prominent gay people and lgbt rights milestones and history. the state board education members will introduce concepts in the second grade, california's place in the gay rights movement in the 4th grade and additional lessons in

the 5th and 8th and 12th grade. some classrooms take lgbt history but most schools have hesitated without the guidelines from the state. also, part of the law, it is forbidden to use classroom materials that belittle the lgbt community or any religion. it is unclear when the curriculum will start. we expect a better team table after the meeting today. >> alameda county sheriff are searching for a murder women that could still be loaded. it was used in a deadly ambush shooting yesterday in an area of alameda county near hayward. a man walked up to a driver of this red pickup and opened fire. the gunman and his female accomplice, the get away driver, were arrested a short time later. authorities trying to figure out why the victim was targeted. >> two men make the first court appearance for shooting a guard during a robbery. detectives deal the armored

several more hours checking for hot spots much it is very dry. you can see behind me the sun is coming up all of the grass in the remote area is mostly cattle land. let my show you some video of the flames that spread quickly to both sides of sierra road starting at 2:30 in the morning, reached ten acres and was headed to the park. firefighters took two hours to contain the flames. here is what they had to say. >> we have fully contained at this point with a line all the way around it and hit the hot spots and working on an overhaul plan. >> alum rock park at peak, 70 firefighters were on the scene investigating the cause. this is a remote election. it is unclear what sparked the fire on sierra road, the drive to get to our location, there are signs saying extreme fire

northbound 87, traffic is fine, a few early crashes in san jose and they are not causing any delays. the low spot is westbound 580 through the altamont pass. >> thank you. if you commute from marin to the east bay the next story is going to make you smile, the third lane on the richmond-san rafael bridge is now a reality. we are on the bridge with more. amy? >> you have a year and a half to wait with the land to add a third lane to the eastbound part of the bridge so the lower deck and the plan is to open in december of 2017. they want to clear up the ugly, thick, traffic you can see during the rush hour, the land was presented to caltran yesterday clearing the way to start the project, the third lane is open during the commute hours and other times used as a shoulder.
