we are joined live now with local reaction to the choice. laura. >> reporter: mike pence did spark controversy last year when he signed a religious freedom bill in indiana that opened the door for discrimination against same sex couples but since then he's been quiet and conservative. >> this time he's ruling with his head rather than his heart. >> reporter: it may not be the boldest move but perhaps the smart one for donald trump, selecting indiana governor mike pence as his running mate. >> governor mike pence is dish water when it comes to speaking but he comes with things that donald trump needs. he describes him as a cristian, conservative and republican in that order. >> reporter: is pence too conservative, especially on social issues like abortion and gay rights for bay area residents. >> we are more moderate on the

issues but to be fair i think there's a large number of voters that maybe were not so excited about trump and we're more excited about cruz that i think we'll be more attracted to the ticket because of this. >> reporter: pence has broad experience in politics and public office. having served more than a decade in congress before becoming the governor of indiana. and for all his conservative credentials pence has shown the ability to buck trump's thinking tweeting back in december calls to ban muslims from entering the u.s. are offensive and unconstitutional. there's a sense that pence's calm may counter balance trump's rhetoric. >> i think the difference between donald trump and michael pence is the difference between a saturday night jazz singer and somebody who sings in the sunday chore. >> reporter: probably not his vp pick. front-runners newt gingrich and chris christie would be likely candidates for trump cabinet

members. >> the republican national convention starts on monday in cleveland, ohio. we'll be there to provide live coverage and they will cover the democratic national convention which begins a week later. a state republican party official has filed a lawsuit against the city of san jose. it claims police didn't protect 14 donald trump supporters from violence outside a rally last month. >> we are live in san jose city hall with new reaction from the police chief. >> reporter: the mayor and the police chief are standing by and failing to help while trump supporters were attacked. this happened on june 2nd while trump was in town at the convention center. after the event let out and as supporters were leaving they were met by hundreds of protesters and then things skate

escalat escalated. the police chief and city stand by the decision not to break rank and the others see it as inaction. >> it seems like nobody is going to be held responsible for the mob violence that san jose allowed to occur and did not con screen in. >> it's terrible what happened and we don't condone the violence of what happened which is why we convened a task force that to this point has -- we've arrested 20 individuals with two more that have arrest warrants out for them. >> reporter: the mayor released a similar statement reiterating he did not play a role in the decision made by the police department that day. victims' injuries range from a broken nose to a 71-year-old who had her glasses smashed to a 24-year-old who was assaulted by two different people and the suit named a handful of rioters

and protesters. abc 7 news. >> thanks a lot. an interstate off ramp has reopened after a natural gas leak in san jose but people are still evacuated from an apartment complex and two senior citizens centers. we were on adam rock avenue next to interstate 880 as crews repaired the leak. a utility crew was working in the area around 12:30 this afternoon when workers struck a line. no one was hurt but people living within 300 feet of the substation have been evaek waited and beyond that line people have been told to stay inside. it is unknown how much longer the repairs will take. the bomb squad was called out this afternoon and people were evacuated for what turned out to be an alarm clock. fire crews found a suspicious device after extinguishing a

fire near highway 101. someone who shot two men in east san jose today -- or someone shot two men in east san jose today and the suspect hasn't been found. this happened near the elementary school and police found one victim seriously injured and the other victim was found dropped off at the hospital with at least one gunshot wound. new released security video may help to solve a robbery. the man asks to see a ring and the moment the clerk hands it to him he runs out of the store. this happened at the fast fix and jewelry watch repair. the clerk told police she noticed the man was pacing around the store before asking to see that ring. >> she's picking up on some of the characteristics on what he's doing she doesn't want to discriminate and tell him no i'm

a scene in the city of nice after a truck driver slammed into a crowd of people, killing at least 77 and injuring at least 65 more. could be closer to 100 at this point. we're still getting new information. today was bastille day. the truck driver was killed by police but not before he opened fire on the crowd. he was shooting at the crowd from his window as he drove. in a statement tonight president obama condemned the horrific terrorist attack and offered assistance to the french people. in san francisco they are offering to serve as a listening board for anything that anyone is worried about. carolyn tyler has the story of the fear doctor. >> reporter: take a seat, the doctor will see you now. hunter frankss isn't a real physician and what he's

when the conditions are clear. the driver is in control of the car. this afternoon the ceo tweeted that autopilot was not in use when a tesla crashed in pennsylvania. in that case the driver and passenger both sur sooifed even the car crashed and rolled. the driver told police he had been using the autopilot feature. it was not business as usual today. the car repair shops are not aloid to do repairs for the next tooif days. the state accused the stores of repeated fraud and suspended their licenses. the penalty takes effect today. this fire stone is closed for the next toofive days. a state agent showed up with a sign the store must post in the window. >> if you want to say anything about what's happening today. >> reporter: but he did put up the sign which speaks for

itself. the store will not be permitted to perform automotive repairs until next tuesday and then it's on probation. >> we're going to be monitoring this particular location for three years. >> reporter: the discipline comes after an undercover operation. agents say employees tried to sell a long list of services the cars did not need ranging from $70 to $2,600. >> we're looking at all shops and making sure they're doing right by their customers. >> reporter: jiffy lubes also started a five day suspension today. they were the focus of a separate investigation and are accused of fraud and selling a range of services customers did not need. the jiffy lubes are staying open during the suspension but can only do oil changes not the full range of services they usually offer. >> no repairs that require mechanical expertise. >> reporter: this customer thinks this kind of action will

for 700 to 7,000 across the bay area. here's a live look at the bridge which will soon get a third eastbound lane to help reduce congestion. traffic is up 13% in the past five years. the back ups spill into residential streets and highway 101. the shoulder will become the third lane. it needs to be widened an move a retaining wall and add more space to act as a new shoulder. the third lane will hopefully be open by the end of next year. three birds have tested positive for west nile virus. birds with the virus have been found in the past month in santa cruz, redwood city and althougherton. the virus is spread by mosquitos and mosquitos carrying the virus have been found in san jose and campbell. it doesn't cause symptoms in

the truck driver tore through the celebration. >> we thought this must be a drunk driver. i didn't think this was an act of terrorism initially. i came out and saw people yelling. this truck driving kind of erratically but as we watched it unfold it was never -- it never came to a stop or anything, it just kept kind of zig zagging. >> in a statement tonight president obama condemned what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack. he offered his thoughts and prayers to the families and loved ones of those killed. he says the united states stand in solidarity and partnership with france, our oldest ally as they respond to and recover from this attack. the french president is expected to address the french people any minute now. last november gunmen killed 130 people in paris. today french intelligence said the master mind who planned the terrorist attacks is still on the run. >> in less than two hours

gets done. >> reporter: in san jose abc 7 news. friends and family laid philando castile to rest. he was shot and killed by a police officer last week. they raised their fist as they carried his casket out of the church. the moments after he was shot were streemd by his girlfriend on facebook drawing national attention and outrage over his death. today marked the funeral for police officer michael smith. he's one of five officers shot last week. funerals for two other officers killed, michael krol an patrick zamarripa will happen later this week. racial profiling on capitol hill. >> recognize that just because you do not feel the pain, the

anguish of another, does not mean it does not exist. of the 100 people who make the u.s. senate, six are nonwhite and three are hispanic, there's one asian minority woman in the senate. an effort is under way to treat violence in oakland by listening to what teenagers have to say about their interactions with police and about jobs. leslie has the story tonight. >> reporter: a few years ago this 27-year-old was shot in the stomach on the streets of oakland. >> it felt like my life was over. i'm not going to be living. i'm probably going to get shot again. >> reporter: he survived physically but struggled until now. as he gets help putting a resume together he thinks he can beat the odds.

breaking news in france. this is a live shot from paris where the french president is scheduled to speak about the terror attack today in the city of nice. 77 people were killed when a gunman plowed a truck into a crowd of people celebrating bastille day, which is french independence day. it happened during a fireworks show and many witnesses thought the fire shots were fireworks. president obama has offered to help in any way the u.s. can. there are lots of things teens can go over the summer but very few where they can get paid to help save the planet. jonathan bloom explains it's a free service that could save you money and those teens are more than happy to provide it. >> reporter: make sure you get a ladder. they're the tools to turn your house into a green house. >> a nozzle for the hose. >> reporter: these teens are hitting the streets. >> hi.

during today's first round of the british open 46-year-old phil mickleson had a chance to do something no one has ever done at a major, he had the shot of the day on the par three 14, his shot goes in for a hole in one. the champ is at even par. american patrick reid had the early lead on the third hole. it takes a couple of bounces and goes in at five under par he's tied for second. the day belonged to mickleson who won the open three years ago. check out his shot on 16. it will nearly spin back in for a birdie. on 17, leftie with his eighth birtie for the day. if he can make one more he will score a 62, something never done before at a major, but it just
