ab breaking breaking news is from france. this is the truck that mowed down dozens of people. tonight the death toll is climbing and many others were injured in a horrific attack shocking europe, the u.s. and the word. it happened in nice, 500 miles south of paris. 84 people are now confirmed dead, but it's not clear yet if anyone from the u.s. is among the victims. no one has claimed responsibility. and in an address televised around the world, french president hollande extended a

state of emergency for another three months. >> reporter: people running for their lives in nice, running away from mayhem on the promenade of this french resort city. thousands of people enjoyed a night out on the national holiday bastille day when a truck driver slammed his vehicle in crowds of people. >> the truck drove through all the securities and we are hearing guns being shot. >> reporter: witnesses ran from an apocalyptic scene. >> i heard the loud noises and people started screaming and shots being fired up in the air. [ sirens ] >> reporter: the truck reportedly plowed into people for over one mile before police managed to engage the driver. they fired shots into the truck. the windshield was riddled with bullets. the driver was killed. police say the truck was loaded with arms and grenades.

the city of nice put in place its emergency protocol, advising everyone to shelter in place. the french president met in an emergency session in paris. they've opened an investigation for murder, attempted murder and an organization linked to a terrorist enterprise. this attack happening right as france began to breathe a sigh of relief from terror. the president of france saying he was just about to end the state of emergency but now that has been extended an extra three mont mont months. >> let's continue with melanie woodrow live in san francisco with bay area residents keeping a close eye on the events unfolding in france. >> reporter: people gathered outside the french consulate, including one man who grew up in

nice. he said he would have been celebrating as were the people killed and injured. a moment of silence followed by the french national anthem. ♪ bastille day celebrations are taking on new meaning after a truck driver plowed into a crowd in nice, killing at least 80 people and stwinjuring others. french police killed the driver. >> some of my friends were out. i called them. they were okay, fortunately, but if it's not my friends, the friends of somebody else. >> appreciate to be here, to see what's happening in france, we can do nothing. >> reporter: restaurant owners were preparing for the bastille day rush when they heard the news. >> i thought it was an accident, something terrible happened. >> reporter: this family from southern california traveled to san francisco to fulfill their father's western of spreading his ashes at the golden get a

>> david muir moderated the event in washington, d.c. and called it a national conversation. the hour-long event to address issues, including on how to survive a traffic stop. it comes at a volatile time. police shot and killed two black men. and five dallas police officers were targeted and shot and killed. the president shared a powerful story from his childhood. >> walking into the elevator, and there was a woman who i thought knew me, and as soon as i walked on, and she lived on my grand parents' floor. when i walked on, she got off. >> the president says he then watched the elevator go back down and the woman went up on her own. now i had the honor of moderating a discussion here at our abc 7 news studios tonight about those social issues

dominating so many conversation across the bay area and the nation right now. and there was no shortage of opinions over the two-hour conversation. here's abc 7's reporter cornell bernard with a look at the talk. >> reporter: as soon as the town hall was ending, a bay area conversation was beginning, moderated by ama daetz. >> we can't fix what's broken. >> reporter: one room, 20 people, community members and leaders starting the difficult conversation on race and policing. >> we're taking it out of context. we want to say there's a few good cops, a few bad cops. it's a bad system. and it's always been that. >> reporter: lori valadez's partner was shot and killed by police. >> where's your daddy? the cops killed him. first thing that came out of the kid's mouth. your daddy must have been a bad person because that's all cops kill. >> reporter: black lives matter

>> reporter: the plaintiffs claim that police just stood by and let protesters attack them and that their rights to assemble, to free speech and due process were violated. the attacks on trump supporters june 2nd were at times violent, nonstop san beyond belief. >> it was a mob scene outside. there were protesters everywhere. >> reporter: juan hernandez was attacked by not one but two mobs. these are pictures of his bloody clothes and broken nose. >> they jumped us, knocked knee the face. my nose started pouring blood. i had bruises and scratches all over. >> reporter: hernandez is one of 14 people who filed a class action lawsuit claiming not enough was done by law enforcement that day. 250 officers, many in riot gear were lined up but did not break formation. officers refused to help. >> it seems nobody's going to be held responsible for the mob
