live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> a legend both on the court and off passed away. warriors' hall of famer, nate thurmond, is being remembered as one of the greatest basketball players of all-time and a man of grace and dignity to all of us here at abc 7. thurmond was chosen as 1 of the 50 greatest in nba history. he lost his battle with leukemia. he was 74. he joined larry beil as an analyst on after the game. larry looks back at a life of an nba legend. >> nate thurmond had no trouble living up to the nickname big nate. born in akron, ohio, nate

thurmond was a force in college in bowling green, drafted third overall by the warriors in the 1963 nba draft, a big man who rebounded and blocked shots, playing along side greats like rick barry and wilt chamberlain and more than held his own against legends like abdul jabar. >> if you look at what he gave to the teams he played for, i feel he is one of the greatest ever to play the game. >> a seven-time all-star, thurmond played 14 seasons in the nba and tallied more than 14,000 rebounds and became the first player ever to record a quadruple-double, all in one game. nate once pulled down 42 rebounds in a game. his number 42 has been retired by the warriors and the

cavendish. thurmond averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds per contest. in his best season nate averaged 21 points and 21 rebounds a night. in today's nba he would be a $100 million player for sure. he was elected to the basketball hall of fame in 1985. >> we welcome you to the naismith memorial basketball hall of fame mr. nate thurmond. >> after his playing days he was the owner of big nate's barbecue in san francisco. a warriors community ambassador, classy and generous with his time and a fixture on abc 7's after the game where he predicted the warriors 2015 title and his parade route meal. >> have something to eat.

>> he may have fallen short of winning a championship as a player but took part in the warriors parade. >> now they are celebrating the world champions. >> received a ring from the team owner for his role in the organization. >> nathaniel thurmond, husband, father, friend, leaves behind a legacy as large as his stature. >> i spoke with larry earlier tonight and spoke about his emotional last conversation with nate. >> he was calling his friends basically saying thank you. we were on the phone. he said we had a good run together. i was like past tense, what hear you talking about. it just hit me like he was calling me to say good-bye. i immediately broke down.

680. the officer was walking when the car struck him. now for the latest on the deadly terror attack in nice, france. dozens of people running to the restaurant the moment a truck barrelled into the crowd outside. isis called the truck driver a soldier. police say he drove over sidewalks, dodged police cars to get to the bastille day celebration killing 84 people. it is once again open to the public. people are leaving candles and flowers in memory of those killed.

>> the san francisco city hall is lit up in the colors of the city of france. unfortunately this has happened a couple of times the past couple of years. >> this was not supposed to be a weekend of singing the french national anthem in sadness. several events were planned celebrating bastille day but instead they observed a minute of silence. the latest tragedy against one of our nations closest allies during their most cherished national holiday. >> for the french bastille day shows our values. >> one woman here had several cousins in the crowd there when the massive truck plowed through the celebration.

flooded in the square to cheer democracy, at least 265 people died in the fail coup. turkey's president is blaming a moderate cleric who lives in the u.s. for the coup and is demanding the arrest or ex tridition. the u.s. said it will examine the evidence carefully and turkey will have to prove wrongdoing. he said he left more than 15 years ago and has nothing to do with the coup. in the race for president democrats are already slamming donald trump's pick for vice president, mike pence. trump made it official in an announcement this morning in new york city. >> we are the law and order candidate. >> donald trump is a good man and he will make a great president of the united states of america. >> in a new video hillary

vandals who sawed apart trees in a san jose neighborhood. there are a few leads tonight. lisa. >> reporter: a -- members gathered to talk about what happened to post these signs and ask for the community's help. >> i hope it grows again or some day we will replant the tree. >> adam phillip is heart broken. they held a vigil in honor of the 23 young chinese fringes cut down yesterday morning. >> it has been planned with some kind of object and not just broken off. >> it made me really sad and disappointed. i don't understand why the trees were cut down. >> our city's forest planted the trees last fall and they have

members performed cpr and transported the girl to the hospital. emergency responders do not believe there was negligence involved. a member of the british parliament got a look at weapons seized by criminals in oakland today. all of these firearms were used in murders and shootings in oakland. >> both men pull out handguns and shoot at each other in the streets and someone driving by is killed. >> 86 people died in oakland from gun related violence in 2014 compared with 43 in the entire country of scotland. food brought people together in the east bay today.

san francisco with the fog. 63 san jose. overnight everybody will drop into the 50s across the region. you will have the coastal cloud cover moving in. mainly for skies in the south bay. but along the coast tomorrow we have a chance of coastal drizzle developing. hour-by-hour picking up on some light mist and drizzle. going into the morning the clouds pull back to the coast as it always does in july. it will be away from the coast and you will see a fair amount of sunshine. san francisco, we will have a fair amount of cloud cover and chance of spotty drizzle first thing. perhaps late daybreaks of sunshine. cool day in the upper 50s to lower 60s. blue jays taking on the a's.

abc 7 sports. >> as we reported earlier in the show nate thurmond has died after a short battle with leukemia. thurmond worked as a goodwill ambassador for the warriors after his retirement. he played 14 seasons in all and 11 with golden state averaging 15 points and 15 rebounds a contest and holds the franchise record for career rebounds. along with being in the hall of fame, thurmond was named one of the 50 best in nba history. nate called several people to say good-bye. >> he says larry. hang on a second. listen. i am 74 years old. i had a great life. i have a great wife. i can't put marcie through this

the padres scored two off of santiago casilla with the game-winner coming on a balk and san diego wins 6-5 and going for a sweep. the a's took on toronto. ryan heely got his first hit, a three-run homer to give oakland a 4-2 lead. he got to celebrate with pie and gatorade. the final round of the british open should be a good duel between 46-year-old phil mickelson and sweden's henrik stenson. hogwarts is supposedly in scotland. mickelson with the two-stroke lead and gave a young boy a souvenir ball. mickelson regains the lead with another birdie on 16 but would give it up on 17. lefty's tee shot goes too far to the left and winds up in the
