broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, july 17th. let's start with the quick look at the weather with our meteorologist francine roster. >> hi, carolyn. we're starting out with a lot of clouds, but there are clear spots inland right now. temperatures are on the cool side this morning. we're seeing a lot of 50s out there with san francisco at 54, oakland currently 60 degrees. antioch, 60. here is how it plays out for today. we could see coastal drizzle this morning, that pocket of green there, and as the clouds pull back to the coast, we'll

see a sunny afternoon inland but notice the clouds stick around, and that's where temperatures will stay cool. it will be breezy as well, especially if you're headed towards san francisco. half-moon bay, only 59 today, san francisco, 63, and then warming up inland as we head farther east. carolyn. thank you. developing news out of costa county. a police officer is recovering after a car hit him in walnut creek. it happened around 10:15 last night. police say the car was involved if a hit and run before hitting the patrol car. police have arrested the driver. the officer was taken to the hospital. his condition is not known it. the accident is under investigation. now to the latest on the deadly terror attack in nice, france.

secure camera shows video, if he was radicalized, it happened recently. he was dodging police cars to get to the celebration where he killed 84 people. the promenade is open to the public again for the first time since thursday's attack. people are leaving candles and flowers in memory of those killed. french official says 85 people are still in the hospital. 18 in life threaten conditions. the bay area, french community, remembers the victim in a vigil yesterday. abc 7 news reporter sergio quinntanna was there. >> reporter: this was not supposed to be a weekend of sicking the french national anthem in sandness.

the organizer had several events celebrating bastille this weekend, instead, a moment of silence. the latest tragedy in one of our nation's closest allies, during their cheer ished holidays. >> it is our values. >> reporter: one woman here had several cousins in the crowd there when the truck plowed through the celebration. >> we're very close to the truck, they saw it come. they heard the people screaming and ran away with them. >> this is the second most visited city for tourism. they were a target. >> reporter: among those still missing, nick leslie from uc berkeley, flyers are being passed out with his picture, and

his parents are headed to french. there are still among the dead who are yet to be identified. friends and family are desperately hoping he is safe. even through so much loss, the c consul had a message. >> we will never give in to the terrorist threats. in turkey, thousands of people were back on the streets last night, showing their support for the government, after friday's attempted coup. they flooded into city squares to cheer democracy. at least 265 people died in the failed coup. 6,000 have been arrested. turkey's president, erdogan is blaming a man who lives in the united states. he is demanding the arrest or extradition of gulen. the united states said they will look at the evidence, but turkey will have to prove wrongdoing.

they gaethered around his home n pennsylvania, and he said he left turkey 15 years and has nothing to do with the coup. now to the presidential race. gop insiders, grassroots and delegates are preparing for the republic national convention. democratic, hillary clinton, is launching an attack on both donald trump and his running mate, mike pence. abc 7 news reporter stephanie ramos reports from cleveland. >> reporter: carolyn, what a week it will be. the city of cleveland playing host to the republican national convention, at least 60 speakers will take the stage. the first joint event for donald trump and mike pence did away with tradition, but finally happened. >> so one of the primary reasons that i chose mike was i looked at indiana and i won indiana big. >> reporter: trump taking nearly

along with abc 7 news anchor reggie aqui to cover the convention. police in the south bay are looking for the vandals who sawed apart trees. there are not many leads this morning. >> i hope it grows again or some day we'll replant it. >> reporter: adam phillip is heartbroken. they lit candles in honor of the 23 young chinese fringes cut down. >> they are methodically cut and this had been planned with some kind of object. not just broken off. >> it made me really sad and disappointed. i just can't understand like why the trees were cut down. what would cause somebody want

to do that. >> reporter: the city forest planted the trees last fall. they've grown two feet since then and adam comes out every week to water and prune the trees. you care about these tree as soon as. >> i do, deeply, because what they mean to me is for all the ecological benefits for the community. >> reporter: the very community these trees are here to benefit is now cast with helping to find the one responsible for this. those who live nearby are outraged. >> i was just really irritated in general. how somebody can do this with a project like this. it is a beautification project and something we should be proud of and not not destroying. >> it is not clear that the trees are all dead and that's why they're going to continue to water them just in case, abc 7 news. it feels cool out there this morning. let's check in with francis with the accuweather forecast.

this is a live look from the golden gate bridge camera. you can see it foggy there, chi chilly. francis is in for lisa this morning, and have a full accuweather forecast. legend both on and off the court has passed away. warriors hall of famer, nate thurmond, is being remembered as one of the basketball players of all time, and was a man of grace and dignity to all of us here at abc 7. thurmond was chosen as one of the 50 greatest players in nba history. yesterday morning, the former warriors center lost his battle with leukemia. he was 74 years old. in recent years, you know nate joined abc 7 sports director larry beil as an analyst on after the game. larry looks back now at the life of an nba legend. >> standing 6'11" tall and weighing in at 235 pounds, nate thurmond had no trouble living

up to the nickname "big nate." born in akron ohio, a force at bowling green, drafted third overall in the 1963 nba draft. a big man, with a pension for rebounds and block shots. thurmond played alongside greats like wilt chamberlin. incredible defensive basketball player. >> he held his own against legends like kareem abdul-jabbar. >> if you look at what he was able to give to the teams that he played for, i feel that he is one of the greats that ever played the game. >> a seven time all star, thurmond played 13 seasons, tallied more than 14,000 rebounds. became the first player to ever record a quadruple double. 22 points, 14 points, 13 assists and 12 blocks, all in one game. nate once pulled down 42 rebounds in a single game. and his number 42 has been retired by both the warriors and

the cavaliers. dubbed one of the 50 greatest players of all time by the nba, thurmond averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds per contest. in his very best season, 21 points and 20 rebounds a night. in today's nba, he would be a $100 million player for sure. nate was elected to the basketball hall of fame in 1985. >> we welcome basketball hall of fame plr fame, mr. nate thurmond. >> nate the great wasn't just a force on the court. after his playing days, he became a force in the kitchen. the owner of big nate's barbecue in san francisco. he served as a warriors community ambassador, always classy and generous with his time for all the fans. of course, a fixture right here on abc 7 "after the game." he predicted the warriors title,

are you talking about. and it just hit me like he was calling to say goodbye. and i immediately broke down and i was -- i couldn't even talk. i was just sobbing and he said larry, larry, just hang on a second. listen, okay, i'm 74 years old. okay, i've a had a great life. i got a great wife. i can't put marcy through this any more okay. i'm not angry. it's -- i am at peace with what is coming. it's okay. don't feel bad for me. he said in a few days, i'm going to see god. and i'm just sobbing at this point. i can't even have a conversation. i said i don't want you to see god. i want you to see kevin durant with me next season. he goes, yeah, i wish, i wish i do that. i just don't think it is going to happen, man. so thanks for everything. and you know, i was just a wreck after that. but here he is, he is facing -- he is looking death in the face, and he is trying to comfort me, because i'm falling apart.

7 news.com. other news this morning. a 3-year-old girl was rushed to the emergency room, after she developed complications at a dental office in san ramon yesterday. abc 7 was at dear wood road after an unresponsive child at the dental bliss office. medics performed cpr and then transported the girl to the hospital. emergency responders don't believe there was any negligence involved. a member of the british parliament got a first hand look of the firearms seized from convicted criminals in oakland. these guns stunned scottish mp patrick grady yesterday and he met with congressman patrick swallowel. all these firearms were used in murders and shootings in oakland. >> two men will get into an argument, they pull out a handgun and start shooting at each other on the street and

temperatures a little cooler than average, possibly through tuesday. here is a look at the aids walk. it will be cloudy and cool. 7:00 this morning, temperatures in the low 50s, and even by lunchtime, just peaks of sunshine, temperatures will start to climb up to near 60 this afternoon and only partly sunny conditions there. it will be nice in the south bay, 80 degrees in san jose this afternoon. santa clara, 79, and also look for temperatures to hit the mid 70s and the lower part of the pens peninsula. notice the clouds at the coast, keeping things cool. 57 degrees in daily city, and santa rosa hitting 80 degrees today. you'll also find cooler than normal weather in the east bay, 68 in berkeley, oakland, 70 degrees. fremont, 79 degrees. plenty of sunshine, still inland, you might like the

abc 7 news was in richmond yesterday to celebrate a homegrown sailboat design with the unveiling of a new sculpture. the world famous el toro style was developed by a group of sailing enthusiasts that kids could sail. they designed it so the hull could be cut out by two sheets of plywood. olympic champions have learned

news. welcome barks, everyone. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist francis, in for lisa argen. good morning, francis. >> good morning, everyone. we've got a lot of low clouds along the coast and along the bay. some clearing in inland areas. temperatures right now mainly in the 50s with oakland, heyward up to 60 degrees and livermore, 56. here is how the day plays out. we have the live view toward the santa cruz there, around 7:00 this morning, still plenty of clouds, with temperatures in the low 50s to 60s. by this afternoon, the clouds will be at the coast, but temperatures will be climbing up into the low 80s in some inland areas, and then later on in the afternoon, we'll see warm temperatures inland but we're below average. things will start to cool down with the sun set at 8:30 tonight. we have a cooling trend in the middle of it, and that will continue. i'll have the details with the

convention will start tomorrow, and laura anthony and reggie aqui will be providing live coverage. they'll also cover the democratic national convention, which begins just a week later. in texas, the final funeral was held yesterday for the officers killed in dallas. a catholic funeral service was held for patrick zamarripa in fort worth, he was one of five officers killed following a peaceful protest of fatal police shootings in minnesota and louisiana. several bay area officers went, including san francisco and richmond. after the service, they tweeted these photos, with different patch, same family. sfpd is proud to stand with dallas police, #dallasstrong.

a man in maryland picked the wrong convenience store to rob. they show him pointing a shotgun at a clerk with two other customers. unphased the clerk grabs the firearm out of the suspect's hands. he runs away empty handled. police arrested the man the next day. he has been charged with attempted armed robbery. apparently not everyone in the world is a pokemon go fan. the popular mobile game was supposed to launch in 26 countries yesterday, but it crashed. a group of hackers is claiming responsibility. last night, pokemon tweeted the issues causing the server problems have been identified. trainers should once again be able to search for pokemon in the real world. a group of grateful employees surprised their ceo after his generosity this past year. >> oh, my god.

fremont, palo alto, north bay and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. stunning story of survival from hawaii. two pilots are recovering after being lost at sea for over 20 hours. they ran into trouble, when they were flying from oahu to the big island on thursday in a small twin engine plane. a rescue mission began when the plane disappeared from air traffic control radar, and they were spotted swimming to shore wednesday morning. one pilot's father was overcome
