deputy. and we have the very latest developments. >> reporter: as you could see behind me, the memorial here continues to grow. there is a police chaplain who said that he has given hundreds of hugs and prayers today as people are trying to come to terms with this tragedy. mean while investigators are trying to get into the mind of that killer. >> there is no doubt whatsoever that these officers were intentionally targeted and assassinated. >> reporter: investigators are confident that the deadly shooting spree that took the lives of three officers was a planned ambush. what they are trying to understand is why this man, gavin long, who served in iraq and honorably discharged went on a murdererous rampage on his 29th birthday. >> why the ambush? >> reporter: here is what they do know. he came from his home in kansas city a few days ago and believed

recently filed paperwork to change his name and pledged himself to a black extremist movement, posting this video after officers were killed. police say he had an aar-style rifle and charmaine adams was there. >> he went around to the back of the car and the officer literally on the driver's side of the car, shooting over us. >> reporter: three officers died on the scene. garra foala and gerald and jackson. jackson's uncle remembering him today. >> i'm sorry. as long as i have breath in me, i will try to keep his memory alive. and i also have to tell you, that here in baton rouge, while the community is clearly grieving, they say they feel like they are coming together and echoing in some ways what

the governor said today which is these were the actions taken by an outsider. live from baton rouge, lorna zack, abc 7 news. >> it sounds like you are saying you are seeing unity at this point after this tragedy, is that right? >> reporter: i've heard that -- that is exactly right, kristen. i've been hearing strangers here today debating with each other in a civil way and coming from different perspectives but trying to come to a sense of understanding so as a community they could heal and move forward together. >> that is encouraging. reporting live, thank you. in sacramento, the flags at the state capitol were lowered to half-staff in memory of the fallen officers. 100 people rallied to honor the officers and the five killed in dallas this month. the wife of a vallejo police officer killed in the line of duty five years ago sent a message on facebook about the recent shootings of law enforcement officers.

>> james was shot and killed while chasing a bank robber back in 2011. he was an 18-year veteran of the department and also coached the girl's basketball team and his wife jennifer said citizens and police officers deserve to feel safe and if you are a black person, brown person, white person, i'm asking you to adopt a cop. wave to him in your neighborhood and offer him a cool drink and to officer, reach out and find new friends in the area you patrol and vot untear in the community and remind people why you became a police officer. and go to our facebook page and share this image. developing in germany, a police operation is underway after a man armed with an ax and knife attacked panssengers on a train. four people were injured before he was shot and killed by police. three of the injuries are serious. others are being treated for

struck in the county in the past month. san francisco is the center of the self-driving universe this week as an autonomous vehicle convention comes to town. >> they are talking planes and trains as well. but cars are the hot topic right now. wayne freedman live from the embarcade embarcadero. wayne? >> reporter: have you ever heard of henne hail bliss. most people haven't. but in 1999 in new york city he became the first person to die in an automobile accident. it is only increased since then. we have 1.9 million deaths worldwide every year. so here come autonomous driving cars. you think everyone was in about a rush to get one but there are people who have some concerns. sometimes it feels like esp, the way drivers communicate on the road or maybe trust is a better word -- until they don't trust any more. how ironic that the engineers meant to talk about driverless cars at a symposium in san francisco this afternoon.

california is being urged to stay out of two lakes been found to feed a type of green algae that could make people sick and kill dogs. test shows the part of lake shasta and pyramid lake in the county. swimming is banned because of the presence of blue-green algae there and this is the third straight summer the water is off

by the nefarious scheming makes no difference, it is unfair and it is unethical. >> reporter: 20 years ago, as a state lawmaker, spears sponsored a measure that led to california becoming first in the nation to do away with gender pricing for services like dry-cleaning and hair cuts. now she wants to expand that to products marketed to women and girls and she's introduced a bill to ban the discrimination nationwide. >> you could look at virtually every product, and find a discrepancy. >> reporter: a similar effort by a san diego lawmaker targeting gender pricing and products sold in california failed after intense lobbying by business groups, including the toy industry, which said there are numerous factors for pricing their costs and including the cost of design, the cost of marketing and cost of material. some consumers aren't buying it. >> let's talk about equality.

we should all pay the same price. >> reporter: her bill would allow the federal trade commission and state attorneys general to crack down. in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. >> on demand bus service is coming to parts of the east bay. today a.c. transit announced a year-long pilot program calling a.c. transit flex. this allows riders to schedule a shuttle van to pick them up and drop them off at desired location and the program will reduce wait time and allow riders to get to their destination faster and this will be offered on low density bus lines in contra costa, newark and fremont. a bay area park ranger who was robbed of a special coin she received from president obama was surprised this weekend. in concord, sally jewel surprised the 94-year-old betty coskin with an envelope from the president and inside was a replacement challenge coin with a personal letter signed by mr.

69 across the bay in oakland. 70s in land and the warm spot is 85 in antioch. this is the view at sfo under mainly blue skies and the forecast features. low clouds expanding with a chance of spotty morning drizzle. mostly sunny days ahead for the next few days and it is hon inland by the weekend. we're talking triple-digit heat. but for tonight, this is how it shapes up. low clouds and fog increasing along the coast and expanding over the bay and early tomorrow morning when we have the lowest temperature readings, overnight lows will check in at about mid-50s in most locations, although we'll probably see low 50s in the north bay valleys and low 50s near the coast. and let's resume the animation through the daytime tomorrow and beginning of the morning commute and we'll probably have reduced visibility in the foggy areas and a few damp spots with spotty drizzle but low clouds and fog will continue to begin to pull back to the coastline by mid morning and by midday mainly

sunny and partly sunny at the coast but still cooler than average tomorrow. high temperatures tomorrow reaching only into the low 60s in the mildest coastal locations. around the bay, we'll see mid to upper 60s and a few low 70s. inland, upper 70s and then just a couple of areas reaching the low 80s. that is about as mild as it will get tomorrow. but at the end of the week, a warm-up. on friday. much warmer with high temperatures inland climbing into the upper 80s to low 90s. check out saturday. really hot inland with highs at 100 degrees at antioch, and on sunday hotter in some spots. 101 in antioch, 102 at clear lake and probably see a couple of 90 degree readings near the bay but then things start to moderate on monday. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. well below average temperatures tomorrow remaining below average on wednesday. and warming up on thursday and friday. a little bit of a heat spike over the weekend with triple-digit temperatures inland and up to about 90 degrees around the bay and then on

in the headlines at the bottom of the hour, delegates erupted in protest during the republican national convention after party officials adopted convention rules by voice vote and those delegates who do not support donald trump were hoping for a state by state vote on the rules that bind delegates to back trump. laura anthony is at the convention and said never trump forces were drowned out by chants of usa, usa. she will have live reports on abc 7 news at 5:00 and 6:00. a delivery man is out of a job after he was caught stealing a package in san jose. vic lee is tweeting this picture. we'll hear from the theft victim on abc 7 news at 5:00.

abc 7 news live in berkeley where a vigil is underway for a cal student who died in the attack in nice. hundreds are expected to attend the memorial at the plaza into officials confirm that nicholas leslie was among the 84 people killed last thursday. in france, a moment of silence today for all of the victims. abc 7 news reporter elizabeth hur has the latest. >> reporter: a sea of mourners paying their respects along the water front in nice. a moment of silence for the 84 lives lost in france as communities in california and texas also gather to honor the the americans killed in the attack. including sean copeland and his 11-year-old son of austin and nicholas, leslie, a junior at the university of california berkeley in nice at the time for a summer program. >> it hurts because we are all golden bears. for me personally, it hits

closer to home. >> it is absolutely tragic. i feel terrible for the families involved. >> reporter: meanwhile in france, new details emerging about the truck driver and his possible accomplices. according to the prosecutor, the investigation so far reveals no direct ties between the driver bouhlel and isis but his computer shows he was only radicalized in recent weeks. investigators are looking for possible accomplices, questioning several people, including a couple who was believed to have provided the attacker with the fake weapons found in his rented truck. as far as how quickly the attacker may have been radicalized, according to officials, it is around july 1st, just a few weeks ago, he started growing a beard and talking about isis and searching online about the orlando and dallas shootings. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. newly released docts suggest

the gunman in the orlando nightclub was taunted for being muslim. omar mateen worked at a courthouse as a contracted guard. he said others made derogatory comments against him. the record said in response he told co-workers he was connected to the boston marathon bombing and ft. hood shooting. the fbi investigated his claim but found no connection. a u.s. air ban to turkey didn't last very long. the faa lifted restrictions to and from turkey after the failed coup attempt. the first of those arrested appeared in court today in ankara, the turkey state-run media said many have been arrested and the head of the turkish air force has confessed to planning the coup attempt in which some 200 people died. president erdogan said they will pay a heavy price for what he called an act of treason. another acquittal for the

freddie gray case in baltimore. the highest ranking officer was found not guilty, marking the fourth trial that prosecutors failed to win. the lieutenant faced charged of manslaughter and endangerment and misconduct in office. the judge dismissed another charge earlier in the trial. gray died after suffering a spinal injury last year. barbara boxer smoke with the commonwealth club in san francisco and not seeking re-election but had plenty to say about this political year and her time in the senate. we have more now. >> reporter: barbara boxer has established progressive politics but in the last few months of her term and she didn't pull any punches on the issues or on the presumptive republican nominee. boxer is well-known for speaking her mind and it only took a few minutes into the q&a session to

this is a cause that has literally gone to the dogs. the police dog has joined his handler in a viral challenge in great britain. this is called hashtag 22 push-ups and it asks you to do that many aday for veteran suicide. that is based on the number of veterans that commit suicide each and every day and the numbers are similar in britain. and monty has it going there. it is tougher for the humans to do 22. but he has it going. >> and he sends a strong message. >> for sure. a selfie by paul ryan is now

and in the sierra, a red flag warning and gusty winds and low humidity and it is warm and the winds are so gusty a lake wind advisory is in effect until 9:00 p.m. with gusts up to 35 miles per hour. no fires breaking out right now. that is good news. tomorrow, wide range of temperatures. 75 in san diego. 111 in the palm springs. and low 60s in the coast to upper 70s and low 80s inland. below average for this time of the year. but a warm-up coming across the bay area. the week ahead in san jose is the indicator. the next few days, temperatures will climb up to about the average level by the end of the week in san jose and on saturday we see highs around 90 and mid-90s in san jose on sunday and monday and that is reflective of what the area should see, inland. we'll have an increase in temperatures over the weekend, up near triple-digits in some areas, larry and kristen.

a call to action today against the amount of on-screen violence viewed by america's kids. the american academy of pediatrics issued a new policy statement urging doctors and lawmakers to take actions to limit exposure to what it calls virtual violence. this includes first-person shooter games and tv shows and movies. the aap said a national discussion is needed to address the issue saying it believes there is a significant link between virtual violence and aggression in children. health news. a popular yogurt company is looking to cut sugar. >> here is jane king. >> danon is looking to cut sugar

corridor system and intelligent system that monitors traffic in the corridor and uses the ramp meters in realtime. and it should be up and ready to go by september. berkeley is closing part of the edwards stadium and protecting workers and the public from crumbling concrete. >> the move comes after we showed you chunks of concrete falling off the old stadium. we are live from cal with what the university plans to do with edwards. >> reporter: let's make it clear, the track, used by so many people, will remain open. but access to the stadium will be limited. now those who have seen the crumbling pillars say, it is about time. when we tried to gain access to edwards stadium through the west tunnel, this is what we found. a yellow caution tape and a no-entry sign. late in june, abc 7 news reported that chunks of concrete have fallen from the pillars that hold the stadium bleachers,

making it a safety hazard. today the university announced it would take action, to aaddress that potential safety issue, we are going to put netting up around the concrete. >> the university estimates it will take the contractor five to six weeks to put up the netting and in the meantime the west tunnel is closed. this is where the campus gardeners have their offices and load up their trucks. >> now we are being moved out of the track and the public won't be put at risk. >> reporter: a number of hisks and organizations have track meets here. the university assured us that despite the concrete falling, the pillars have not been compromised. the bleachers and track will remain in use. people will have access through the east tunnel. >> for me, i just use the track. >> reporter: edwards opened in 1932. last year the seismic action plan for facilities enhancement and renewal gave the stadium a

student nick leslie. he was a member of the fraternity here at cal and a childhood friend from southern cafornia are speaking right now at this vigil as is the council general of france and the chancellor. leslie was from del mar, california and came here to berkeley as an environmental science major. he went to nice on a four-week summer entrepreneurship program with 84 other cal students, many of them on the beach for the bastille day fireworks and caught up in the attack. they hid and they eventually made it back to student housing but nick never returned. the fbi informed cal officials of his death just yesterday. >> he was a really amazing person. and it is a shame that he -- that he got -- >> i hope people recognize how bad the situation is and hopefully the government or whatever will take some action
