maintain situational awareness can be tough. everyone leaves this scene safely. >> i would say the biggest indicator of how an event is going to go for everyone's safety is if we get compliance. >> reporter: he says making sure his deputies and the people they interact with both get home to their families is paramount. abc 7 news. president obama spent hours with black lives matter activists as well as politicians and law enforcement last week discussing police and community relations. john carly was the only bay area representative invited to the white house. we talked with him today in his office about what made this visit unusual. >> it was a very long meeting, very unusual for even his own staff to say four to four and a half hours. but it was very important. so he took the time, rolled up his sleeves, took off his suit coat and listened virtually the entire time.

>> law enforcement officers are still reeling from multiple attacks. yesterday, a shooter killed three officers and injured three other officers in baton rouge. police today released surveillance images of the gunman, gavin eugene long. he was shot and killed by a police sniper. you can show your support for the officers in baton rouge. go to our abc 7 news facebook page. a man attacks several people on a train in germany. he seriously injured four people. the suspect jumped out of the train when it made an emergency stop. police later tracked him down and shot him. officials say the attacker was a 17-year-old from afghanistan who lived in germany. they're still trying to figure out the motive. to the terror attack in nice now. thousands gather for moment of silence today at the attack site in honor of theeiñ killed last thursday.

investigators said the attack was premeditated and planned. they believe the suspect began to show interest in isis just days before he drove through the crowd. the attack took the life of a ucl+r berkeley student. leslie was 20 years old. today, his friends gathered to honor him on campus. >> reporter: very emotional afternoon here at cal as you can well imagine. his family is over in france today meeting with his uc berkeley classmates. they said they lit candles and said prayers there as the world embraces them, they said, in sympathy. here at cal, there were lots of tears. >> i have the image of a smiling young man who was full of generous ambition, who was willing to act positively in the

world, to make the world a better place. and today, the world misses nicholas leslie. >> reporter: the plaza filled with people and prayers and praises for a young 20-year-old whose life was cut short in a terror attack on what was supposed to be the start of his vibrant life. this is the second time in a month uc berkeley has mourned the loss of a student overseas. >> he was really amazing person. and -- >> reporter: nick leslie was from del mar, california and came to uc berkeley to change the world. friends described him as ca charismatic and happy. we had been in paris along with 85 other cal students. many of them were caught up in the attack. three were injured with broken bones. others escaped and hid and ran

about the problems at uc berkeley's edwards stadium because of crumbling concrete. the university will close part of that stadium for the security of workers as well as the public. we are live from cal with what the university plans to do with edwards in the future. but the other issue being discussed here is the possibility of retrofitting the stadium which is only a few blocks from the hayward fault. >> well, that was '77. >> reporter: today at 90, she still practices. for years, she's used the stadium's west tunnel to transport her equipment. but today, this is what she found. a yellow caution)z tape and a entry sign. late in june, abc7 news reported

that chunks of concrete had fallen from the pillars making it a safety hazard. today, the university announced it would take action. >> we are going to put netting up around the concrete. >> reporter: in the meantime, the west tunnel will remain closed. this is where the gardeners have their offices and load up their trucks. >> now we're being moved out of the track and the public won't be put at risk. >> reporter: despite the concrete's falling, the pillars have not been compromised. people will have access through the east tunnel. maria can live with that. >> i would have to find another place to do my jogging. >> reporter: edwards opened in 1932. just last year, the university's seismic action plan for facilities;$icñ enhancement and renewal gave the stadium a poor seismic rat

seismic rating. they will send out another structural engineer to examine the pillars. >> they're going to let the university know of ways that it might be strengthened. >> reporter: since 1997, cal has upgraded 75% of the buildings that needed retrofitting. edwards has yet to make that list. abc7 news. california is being urged to stay out of two lakes that has been found to grow a type of green algae that can make people very sick and kill dogs. it's in parts of shasta and pyramid lake. it marks the third straight sum ir that the water has been af limits die to the toxic algae. we had a nice break from the traditional summer heat, but that is only temporary. >> that's right.

santa rosa, 75. east bay, 58. 73 at fremont. and livermore 78. looking toward the end of the week, friday will bring us a warmer afternoon with inland highs in the low 90s. up to 100 on saturday and sunday. it is going to sizzle like summer inland on the weekend. here's the seven-day forecast. for the next three days, high temperatures generally remain a bit below average bouncing up to 90 inland friday. we expect there will be several of those. on monday, temperatures drop off just a couple degrees, if that is a cooling trend, it's just going to be a gradual one. it's not going to cool down sharply. >> just a reminder. summer's not done yet. thanks for calling that a trend. i think it's wishful thinking. a push for driveless car safety right here in the bay

this week, planes, training and automobiles will converge on san francisco for a special

convention. they are self-driving. >> clearly, it's the cars really in the spotlight right now. wayne freedman has a look. >> reporter: just another fendec bender in downtown san francisco. no deaths, no injuries, hardly memorable if not for the timing and the proximity. because just a few floors above this, a group of engineers in room envisioning a safer world. >> some people envision us not needing traffic lights in the future because cars will be so aware of one another. >> reporter: for the record, the first fatal traffic accident ever happened in 1899. a man stepped off a curb in new york city directly into the path of an oncoming taxi. last year, 1.3 million deaths worldwide. the most notable death this year, joshua brown. last may, he became the first person to die in a self-driving car. he was reportedly watching a

movie behind the wheel of his tesla when the camera and radar failed to recognize a semi truck. they call that accident a warning. >> when you call a system auto pilot, it better work by itself. >> reporter: court came to san francisco to caution those researchers. he wants federally regulated enforceable safety standards. >> i'm afraid they're going to use cheap video cameras, not going to have ample radar. i'm afraid that the next generation of these auto-pilot features won't come with the best technology. >> with all things where folks come together and find new partners, the technology advancement will be accelerated. >> reporter: it did not come soon enough for those drivers down below. in san francisco, wayne freedman, abc7 news. in less than ten years, president obama expects all the vehicles in america to average

accused of taking the package. a san jose woman helped get justice. >> having a laptop stolen is not something that you should expect from an amazon deliver service. >> reporter: she did not want to be identified for security reasons. for this story, we'll call her jennifer. this security video taken last wednesday showing an amazon carrier delivering her laptop. this still taken from another camera shows a different delivery man making his rounds at the apartment complex. then later, this video. it shows him stealing the box with her laptop.5xuu%;f jennifer contacted amazon and the police. amazon sent her another laptop, but she decided she had had enough. >> i actually had another amazon order a few months ago that disappeared. this will be the second time. >> reporter: this time she had the goods.

the damning video. she sent the video and photographs to amazon. lo and behold, she got this reply from amazon's delivery unit. >> the manager actually recognized his employee from the video, and he contacted me and let me know that he has fired the employee since seeing the video. >> reporter: jennifer did her part in exposing a thief who's probably stolen before. >> if you see a wrong, do what you can to fix it. >> reporter: abc7 news. new at 6:00, berkeley police are looking for a man with a bb gun who opened fire on a group of students. they saw a man across the street with a gun who started shooting at them. the students ran, but one got hit and ended up with a minor injury. the shooter has not been found. another bb gun attack happened ten minutes earlier.

major step forward in the golden state warriors effort to build a new arena in san francisco. the city's environmental review of that proposed arena was adequate thus rejecting arguments that the city had failed to consider alternative sites. this decision clears the way for the project at mission bay to move forward. they hope to have it open in time for the 2019 abc7 season. when its earnings report came out today, yahoo! sales grow to $1.3 billion. for buying the core businesses of sunnyvale based yahoo!. they were up about two-tenths of a percent. hurting a guide dog could come with greater penalties in the state of california.

they lobbied in sacramento today. they support a bill working its way through the state capitol.k that calls for it will be a misdemeanor to willfully, knowingly, or recklessly harm a guide dog. >> it will increase the protection for the guide dog team. if the dogs are attacked by another animal or human being. there's coverage for both medical and lost wages. >> guide dog owners could also receive money from the victims compensation restitution fund. a bay area woman is fighting against the pink tax, an extra cost for products marketed to women and girls. jackie sperer points to basketballs as an example. the gray one is $6 cheaper. it would allow to crack down

interstate 80 will look a little bit different tomorrow in the east bay. there will be ramp meters in alameda county. they will be solid green between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. for one week. it monitors traffic in the corridor and uses the brant meters in realtime. it should be up and ready to go by september. santa clara county, they finished repairing that 8-foot sink hole. they were on the screen on friday when crews had to close three northbound lanes in sunnyvale to make repairs. well, the pokemon go craze is not letting up. it is pokemon day. they're turning that into a selling point. okay. plus what brought a look of joy

california schools are safer and students are making healthier choices according to the latest statewide student survey. every two years, the department of education surveys 7th, 9th, of education surveys 7th, 9th, andt a smaller number report having seen someone carry a weapon on camp campus. students reported less frequent and heavy drinking and less marijuana use. this year's survey asked about e-cigarette use for the first time. students in all grades were twice as likely to have smoked an e-cigarette compared to a real cigarette. a double dose of success for spacex overnight. >> three, two, one. >> first, the falcon nine rocket lifted a capsule packed with thousands of pounds of supplies into orbit. it returned to earth and made a successful ground landing.

pupil. thank you very much. a life-saving piece of equipment is getting a second life and a second home thanks to the santa clara county department. >> we've done this for years. one of our apparatuses heading down to mexico. >> abc7 was there today as firefighters made the transfer official. it is one of several pieces of equipment the department donates to various colleges, training programs, and other departments when the equipment no longer meets local standards. a bay area park ranger thought she'd lost something really special when a robber broke into her home and stole a commemorative coin she got from president obama. during a ceremony in concord yesterday, they surprised betty with an envelope from the president. inside was a replacement challenge coin. she also got a personal letter from mr. obama. she said that note made the new coin just as special as the
