good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top stories on "world news now." in one of the biggest nights in her life, donald trump's wife melania looked to show his softer side. she's accused now of lifting lines straight from michelle obama's convention speech. we have a full report coming up. hillary clinton was also in ohio spending the day on the campaign trail. she attended an naacp conference where she condemned the attacks on the police officers and vowed to reform the criminal justice system. and north korea has launched three ballistic missiles into the sea off the country's eastern coast apparently in response to south korea's agreement with the u.s. over a missile defense system. and investigators are trying to figure out a medical mystery in utah.

a person who cared for a zika-infected relative got the virus without sexual contact and without a mosquito involved. those are some of our top stories on this tuesday, july 19th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you all. we begin with last night's keynote speech at the republican national convention. donald trump's wife took the stage and came under initial praise. >> yeah. >> and then untiling that, some criticism now. >> and then the controversy kicked in. melania trump told the world why she fell in love with her husband saying he was tough, kind, fair and caring. she's now under fire, accused of steal ing two key lines from michelle obama's speech that she delivered some eight years earlier. >> protesters tried to disrupt, shouting at several points about war, refugees, and other issues.

they were quickly removed. marci gonzalez joins us live from cleveland. good morning. a lot to keep track of this morning. >> reporter: yes. it was a really eventful night. there was such a mix of speakers too, including six former reality tv stars. and they made no mention of the controversy that we saw here earlier in the day, but, of course, they focussed on praising donald trump, and bashing his presumptive presidential opponent. ♪ oh say does that >> reporter: the theme, make america safe again. >> usa! usa! usa! >> reporter: but as much as the message on the first night of the republican national convention was about national security and recent violence -- >> i would like to make something very clear. blue lives matter in america. >> reporter: the focus also stayed sharply on hillary

clinton. >> a woman who somehow feels that she's entitled to the presidency. >> reporter: and the 2012 attack on a u.s. compound in benghazi. >> hillary failed to protect her people on the ground. >> reporter: clinton speaking earlier at a campaign event in cincinnati. >> i'm thrilled to be here. >> reporter: while here in cleveland donald trump took to the convention stage. >> my wife, an amazing mother, an incredible woman, melania trump. >> reporter: introducing the night's headliner, his wife, melania. >> he's tough when he has to be, but he's also kind and fair and caring. >> reporter: attempting to show a softer side of the presumptive gop nominee, and unify the party after drama earlier on the floor. >> roelt roll call vote! roll call vote! >> reporter: anti-donald trump

protesters trying to block his nomination. >> if they want unity, treat us respectfully. >> reporter: and the never trump movement could hold even more protests again today out on the floor. but, again, no chance of derailing trump's nomination. >> all right. what are you learning about the controversy surrounding melania trump's speech? >> reporter: as you were saying, she got a lot of praise at first. she had great poise and people responded to her message, but then people started looking closely and found a couple of similarities between melania trump's speech and michelle obama's 2008 convention speech. we want to show you one of those parts that seems pretty similar. you see them both giving the speeches at the same time here. >> we work hard for what you want in life. that your word is your bond, that you do what you say. that you treat people with respect. with dignity and respect -- >> wow. >> wow indeed. >> reporter: overnight, donald trump released a statement about his wife's speech. he doesn't quite address all the

questions being raised. i'll tell you, part of his statement is he writes, "in writing her beautiful speech, melania's team of writers took notes on her life's inspirations and in some inspirations included fragments that reflected her own thinking." so maybe the main point there is he's saying, hey, team of writers, because melania said earlier in the night that she wrote the speech on her own with as little help as possible from others. so i'm sure we'll be hearing much more from them on this. >> i guess when you get a little more of an explanation as the day unfolds. >> their p.r. team is going to have to roll into action. and that poor writer out of a job -- kidding. there were protests inside and outside the convention as we saw. is the assumption they're expected to grow as the week goes on? >> reporter: you know, there's no telling. i don't think anyone was surprised that there were a couple of disruptions during the speeches last night, and they expected the protests outside.

was repeatedly taunted for being muslim. that took place while the attacker worked as a security guard at a florida courthouse. the documents show that the gunman told workers he had ties to the other shooters. baltimore city leaders are urging patients after another cop was acquitted in the death of freddie gray. a judge ruled that prosecutors did not prove that they willfully allowed gray to be injured. three other officers have been acquitted. a fourth cop's trial ended in a mistrial. in europe this morning, an attack on board a train in southern germany is again raising questions about refugees in europe. police say a 17-year-old afghan migrant armed with an axe and a knife wounded four passengers. he was shot and killed by police. the victims were family from hong kong.

three were seriously hurt. the attacker's motive is not known. in the u.s., there's a new major wildfire in wye onlying that firefighters have to deal with. the cliff creek fire has destroyed 2,200 acres in a national forest. residents of the area have been ordered to evacuate, and the forest has requested help fighting the fire. only one structure has been destroyed so far, but the heavy smoke is posing a health hazard. a driver launched his truck -- lost his truck as well as his boat. police in lakewood said he didn't set his parking brake. it rolled back into the water. boat launch failure. >> oh, no. and also on the water, a paddle boarder in half-moon bay got a close look at a whale. slow motion shows how close that encounter really was. >> okay, maybe the strangest -- whoa. >> let's see it in slow mo.

as donald as donald trump takes center stage at the republican national convention, the man who essentially first introduced trump to the world now is issuing a warning. >> we're talking about tony schwartz. there he is. he was the ghost writer for trump's best-selling book, "the art of the deal". praising trump's charm for acumen in business. >> now schwartz tells "the new yorker" that the book was essentially "lipstick on a pig."

warning abc that trump could put the entire world in danger if he wins the presidency. >> mr. schwartz, thank you for joining us. you wrote "the art of the deal," donald trump didn't? >> i wrote every word of it. he made a few red marks when i handed him the manuscript, but that was it. >> i got to ask you about this sentence. you said, "i genuinely believe if he wins and gets the nuclear codes, there's a possibility it will lead to the end of civilization." that's an extreme statement. >> it's a terrifying thing. i haven't slept a night through since donald trump announced running for president. i believe he's so insecure and easily provoked and not particularly nearly as smart as people might imagine he is, and in the face of somebody like putin, provoking him cleverly, because putin's a heck of a lot smarter than trump, i do worry that with the nuclear codes he would end civilization as we

know it. >> give us one concrete example of why it would lead you that to the that kind of anxiety from your 18 months with him. >> he has a short attention span. he was unable to do interviews with me past 10 or 15 minutes. finally i had to sit in his office and pick up the phone by the -- eight feet from his desk to listen in on his calls so i could turn this into a book. the idea we'd have somebody with a tiny attention span, my 2-year-old grandson has a longer attention span than donald trump, is itself terri terrifying. this is a complex and difficult world as we know just from the events of the last week. >> i know he called you and said have a nice life. let's talk about points he and supporters will make. one, you kept your silence for a long time, for years, for more than a decade. you collected millions of dollars on this book. you're a lifelong liberal. you've given money to democrats year after year. you have an agenda. >> i do have an agenda.

it's about donald trump's character. he has no ideology. he's not a person who has beliefs, except the belief that he himself should prevail in the end. so really what i'm talking about is character. and every american should be concerned about his character. >> if that's the case, why keep your silence for so long? >> because we had a successful experience together. i never, in a million years thought he would run for president. had i thought that 30 years ago, i wouldn't have written the book. for 29 years, i didn't think he would. i didn't feel i should speak out. i now feel it's my civic duty. i have nothing to gain from this. i have given every dollar of royalties since he announced presidency to a series of nonprofit causes aimed at the people whose rights he wants to abridge. immigration groups and the like. >> you said nothing you wrote

was on its face false in the book. do you stand by that? >> you know, no. i suspect there are quite a number of things that were false. in middle of when i was writing the book, he was telling me about his three casinos and how successful they were while at the very same time, all three of them were going bankrupt. so, no, it's full of falsehoods. >> do you regret writing the book? >> i do. had he not run for president, i wouldn't, but if this contributes to him being elected president, i think this is a man with more sociopathic tendencies than any candidate in my adult life that i've observed. so yeah, i do regret writing the book. >> all that, trump said schwartz had little role in writing the actual book. that he wrote all of the book. we started the newscast with plagiarism, and now another controversy.

it briefly, but what to make of that controversy with the speeches? >> reporter: oh, with melania's speech. at first after she gave her speech, she got a lot of praise for her poise and message. then people started to realize that at least parts of it sounded a lot like michelle obama'stuate convention -- obama's 2008 convention speech. we'll let you listen to a part of both of those speeches now. >> because we want our children and all children in this nation to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them. >> because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them. frequently aren't writing their own speeches. how much of this falls to them and what happens with all of this now? >> reporter: well, earlier in the night melania said she wrote this speech herself, quote, with as little help as possible. so not sure if there's any blame, where it might fall, but, yeah, she was taking responsibility. but she hasn't commented yet since all the speculation about the similarities. >> maybe the help was just two little lines. >> and then there was a lot of argument over the delegate rules. where does this stand? is it finally over? >> reporter: it appears to be finally over. there could be some more protests on the floor later today, but it's not expected to make a difference, but it does kind of go against that unity message that trump and the gop leaders are trying to send. >> all right. abc's marci gonzalez live for us at this early morning hour in cleveland. thank you.

former new york mayor also gave probably the most fiery speech of the night. he slammed hillary clinton and touted trump as a great leader who will keep the country safe. >> for more on the national security theme and what it means for trump, let's turn to rick kline. good morning, rick. >> reporter: the politics of fear front and center in the first night of donald trump's republican national convention. lots of scary talk from speakers here of illegal immigrants. fear of crime. fear of terrorism. all of those things put in the spotlight by donald trump, and then the capstone of the night, donald trump appearing early to introduce his wife, and his wife making the case that he is the solution to those problems. he is the solution to that fear. this was a disorganized night. it was a meandering night at times. effective in terms of presenting his family, starting to show what a trump convention is about and framing his campaign in a slightly different light about safety and security and about himself as the answer to those concerns. >> all right.

memorial. the father of officer montrell jackson meal the aunt of alton sterile. sandra sterling says they're hurting for the family as they come to grips with the death. >> i'm hurting for them. i want to let them know it's okay. i want to hug them and let them know i understand. and i'm so sorry. >> she also said she learned of the violence from a text message while she was in church. at that point, she says she fell to her knees in prayer. in germany, four people recovering from wounds received on board a train. the attacker was armed with a knife and axe and was later shot and killed by police. he was identified as a 17-year-old refugee from afghanistan. the motive is not known, but the attack is sure to rouse debate about refugees. germany has welcomed hundreds of thousands of migrants in the past year. in turkey nearly 9,000

police officers, bureaucrats, and others have been fired following that attempted coup. the alleged ringleader, a former air force commander, has been taken into custody. the turkish president said he escaped death by a few moments saying soldiers supporting the coup killed two of his body guards when they stormed the resort where he'd been staying. a massachusetts man being charged with murder for allegedly killing a teenager who showed up at the wrong house. jeffrey lovell was ordered held without bail during a court appearance. prosecutors say he fired a single shot through his front door, killing a 15-year-old. the victim and a friend had apparently been drinking and were unfamiliar with the neighborhood. they went to the wrong house when looking for a friend. health officials this morning investigating a unique case involving the zika virus in utah. a person who cared for a relative with zika virus also got the virus. without sexual contact or a mosquito involved. the investigation is focused on determining how the person became infected after having

contact with the deceased patient who had a uniquely high amount of virus in the blood. a southern california teen has one record under his belt already and is aiming for another. he's just 16 years old, isiah cooper. he's now the youngest african-american pilot to fly around the united states. >> so he was a member of a program for at-risk inner city youth that teaches them about aviation. cooper and his instructor reached washington state, maine, florida, and back to california but ran into rough weather in wyoming. >> i didn't want to continue with the trip, but he kept pushing me, and they kept pushing me, and after that we got this plane and i continued on, and now i'm here. >> the whole trip took about two weeks. cooper's next goal -- to fly around the world, of course, by himself, though, this time. and that would be at a younger age than anyone has done it. the current record is 19. >> he's already on course at 16 doing this.

bob former senator bob dole is the only past republican nominee in attendance at the gop convention. dole, now 92, sat next to trump's running mate, mike pence last night, and melania trump gave him a shout out. it was the key no shows that emphasized how divided the party is. the bush family declined including former presidents and jeb bush. romney staying away after focusing on the never trump movement. john mccain is in arizona focusing on his reelection campaign, he says, and you won't see john kasich even though the convention is being held in his

for trump. the chairman of the convention came to the podium and basically rammed the rules through. >> all over this say aye. all those opposed, no. and the opinion of the chair, the ayes have it. >> reporter: pandemonium ensued. the chairman simply walked off stage. we saw the type of discord you basically never see at modern conventions. one guy threw down his credentials. the entire colorado delegation when we come backed out leaving rows of empty seats. and the floor fight was not the only unusual development. in another break from tradition, hillary clinton was out on the trail. usually the candidate from the opposing party lays low during the other party's convention. not this time. >> what can i do to stop the dangerous, divisive candidate from getting within 1,000 miles of the white house? i can tell you, it is not enough to yell at your tv screen. >> that's dan harris in cleveland for us. >> that's right. after the rules fight on the floor during the day, it was full speed ahead for the

primetime audience. donald trump took the stage in epic fashion making what might be his shortest speech of the entire campaign season while sprucing his wife melania. >> abc's marci gonzalez has more including what's happening in and around the arena in cleveland. she joins us with the latest. good morning. what's the general feeling there going into day two? >> i want to give you a sense of the overall feeling walking into this arena and being in cleveland. it's incredible just how secure things are around here. there are so many fences and barricades up and so many police. 500 police officers from cleveland. about 2,500 officers from other parts of the country, and the security is so incredibly tight coming into the arena where the convention is being held. the screening you have to go through just to get in is even more intense and thorough than going through tsa screening. >> and then melania -- i'm sorry?

>> you got upgraded. >> no, i'm reading the word melania and calling you that, melania, marci. >> reporter: wait. you said that's an up -- >> dollar wise. looksweis, not at all. i'm going to get out of here. >> we've seen protests outside. there were also some inside, and it seemed a little unruly there today. how is this being handled? >> reporter: yeah, there were about two protesters inside during the event last night, and they really didn't cause that much of a disruption. i mean, you definitely noticed they were there, but the speakers just kept on talking while all of that commotion was going on and those two protesters were taken out without any major incident, and, of course, the protests outside, police knew to expect them. they're making sure they remain peaceful. >> rudy giuliani said it's proof

that we're getting to them, the fact that there were protesters there interrupting his speech. hillary clinton is making moves tonight we saw. what are they? >> reporter: well, she's still out campaigning while all of this is going on. she's out continuing her campaign. she had some events yesterday including some in other parts of the ohio. she's continuing to rail against trump's running mate, mike pence, calling him the most extreme v.p. pick in a generation on social issues, and she's not giving a timeline on when she may name her running mate. back to you. >> marci, the beautiful and wonderful, always, marci gonzalez joining us from. >> you're back pedaling. >> i'm digging. marci, thank you. and later on, judge for yourself. melania trump and michelle obama's speeches. was it plagiarism? we'll have that this half hour. over in germany, a 17-year-old refugee attacked train passengers with a ax and knife. those were visitors from hong

kong, four of them. police shot and killed him. more than a dozen other passengers were treated for shock. some said he shouted "god is great" during the attack. and in france, emotions ran high as mourners removed flowers in nice where 48 people were killed in a terror attack. people piled trash and left angry notes, some even spit on the ground as other applauded. new tensions this morning on the korean peninsula after north korea launched three ballistic missiles off its coast. the launch was apparently in response to south korea's agreement with the u.s. over a missile defense system. and one of the officers killed in baton rouge is being singled out for his actions in trying to save another officer. 45-year-old brad garafalo was trying to pull an officer to safety when he was killed. the photos show the gunman intentionally killed the officers.

the shooter was killed from a sniper who fired from 100 yards away. and another baltimore police officer has been cleared of charges in the freddie gray case. lieutenant brian rice was the highest ranking officer charged in the death. gray suffered from spinal injuries while in a police van and died a week later. the acquittal got a round of applause. one person is dead after a severe thunderstorm in the northeast last evening. a 26-year-old woman was killed in new jersey after a downed wire fell on her car as she was trying to get out of it. >> high winds knocked down trees and a microburst in new england brought hail as well. there was also a report of a tornado in northern maine. every major northeastern airport had to halt operations at some point yesterday afternoon because of the weather. taking a look at today's forecast, it should be much nicer in the northeast today. the south will see heavy rain and excessive head. rain north and heavy rain in the rockies. >> it look nicer. -- it will be nicer. temperatures will be in the 80s
