good evening, from cleveland, the site of the republican national convention. the gop now officially has its nominee. and his name is donald trump. the grand old party is now the

party of trump. it may be fractious, it may be messy. but true to form for a one-time reality star, it is rarely boring. history was made here tonight. donald trump's four adult children appearing with the new york delegation during the roll call vote that formally awarded their father his hard-fought prize. >> it is my honer to be able to throw donald trump over the top in the delegate count tonight. congratulations, dad. we love you. >> reporter: everybody knows the song. it is now official. donald j. trump, a business man with zero prior political experience, has now officially won the nomination for president of the republican party, which he will accept right here in this room on thursday night. trump later appeared by video in the hall. >> today has been a very, very special day, watching my children put me over the top earlier. the party seal. what we did getting the party's

nomination, i will never forget it. it is something i will never, ever forget. >> reporter: during the celebrations after he clinched the nomination, what many saw as a telling moment. three of trump's children, hugging. awkwardly left out for a minute, the younger half-sister, tiffany. hours later, tiffany, a 22-year-old who we have not often heard from during this campaign, strode on to the stage to speak in primetime. >> please excuse me if i'm a little nervous. when i graduated college a couple of months ago, i never expected to be here tonight, addressing the nation. >> reporter: tiffany is his only child from his marriage to his second wife, marla maples. this is one of her rare appearances since the campaign began. >> i'm happy to be tiffany trump. and happy to be the family i'm in. >> reporter: her instagram shows

her living a pretty typical life for a 22-year-old heiress, that is. she even released this song. ♪ she took campaigns to portray her often polarizing father as a doting dad. >> i look forward to introducing him to my friends, especially the ones with preconceived notions because they meet a man with natural charm and no facade. >> reporter: it was a confident performance by a political novice. not unlike the speech delivered by her stepmother, melania, last night. >> it would not be a trump contest without excitement and drama. >> reporter: that speech, however, almost immediately became the source of controversy, with charges that it was plagiarized from michelle obama's 2008 convention speech. here are the speeches side-by-side. the strikingly similar passages

taking verbatim what mrs. obama said. that's as close to plagiarism as you can get. i would call it plagiarism, sure. it wasn't word-for-word, but close enough. >> reporter: we sat down with brett latimer, a speech writer in the bush white house. >> they don't have a strong bench of speech writers. an amateur operation. >> reporter: "world news" anchor david muir spoke about the controversy with donald trump jr. >> what do you make of the striking similarities? >> i don't think there was anything in there that novel, in terms of those particular lines. she talks about immigration and the son, that was much more striking. >> she said she wrote the speech. >> she wrote as much as she could. >> reporter: hours later, donald trump jr. took the stage and delivered a well received speech. >> we believe that solving our great problems is an impossible task. that's why we need to elect a man who has a track record of

rifle. a large number of police officers. and then, we have budding entrepreneurs like these gentlemen selling trump t-shirts for ten bucks. america. things got heated when a right wing conspiracy theorist named alex jones started barking in his megaphone. >> we are here to expose what is happening. >> reporter: then, a scuffle. >> back up. back up. >> reporter: a common complaint against anti-trump protesters, that he is a racist. engaging black voters is now the job of this woman, the newly directed african-american director of outreach. you may remember her from "the apprentice." >> i didn't come here to make friends. >> reporter: when you hear donald trump is a racist, what's

your response to that? you know him. >> i don't just know him through headlines. i know donald trump's heart. i know him as a person. i have to acknowledge that he is racial. let me let you know what that means. when he talks about illegal immigrants and they're coming from different countries, that triggers racial reactions from people because he is talking about racial incidents. that doesn't make him a racist. >> reporter: we saw how tough this reality star can be, when she interrupted our interview. >> excuse me. i'm in the middle of an interview. seriously, you're really loud. thank you. >> reporter: an interesting moment there. that special pizazz you see. next up, ivanka trump, what she says is her dad's most controversial political salvos. and a sneak peek at the new "star wars" stand alone movie.

marshal, of the israel day parade to the support he's offered my husband and myself and our family. as a kyoung-juish couple. i know the person and i know his intent. and i think that was really rother ridiculous. >> i love the old days. >> reporter: hillary clinton has an ad out. have you seen that? >> i've seen it, yes. >> i could stand in the middle of fifth avenue and shoot somebody and wouldn't lose any voters, okay? >> reporter: as a parent, if your children were to see that ad, they were listening to those things, what would you say to your children? >> i wouldn't have my children listening to those ads. a almost all of them are a complete manipulation of his words. despite what anyone might say, i know the man. so do my children. >> reporter: but her father's controversial positions have made him a possible target for more than just political

enemies. >> this young man had been targeting trump for some time. you have a man trying to rush the stage at an ohio rally. >> reporter: do you worry about his safety? >> we live in scary times. i worry about the safety of my father. but i worry about the safety of every american. including my children. myself, my family. >> reporter: what's the one thing you want us to hear, in this historic moment about your father? >> i don't know that people appreciate his tremendous empathy and his warmth. but they should. our country needs a president, who is able to dream big. my father will be able to do that. >> reporter: what role do you see yourself playing in a trump white house? >> right now, i take things day by day. i'm not going to get ahead of
