glitch disrupted systems and grounded a lot of flights. >> even though the glitch only lasted a few hours, fallout is continuing right now. and leslie brinkley is live at oakland international airport to show us what happened. leslie? >> reporter: that is right. the ripple effects continue here at oakland airport. if you pulled up curbside, you would have seen a line that extended across the entire front of the terminal. it is almost that bad at this hour. the kiosks and the computers crashed. if had you a boarding pass that was pre-printed on your cell phone and had a carry-on bag you could make it through the line but everybody else was stuck on the curb or the lobby. >> the line for curbside check w in 100 people deep. >> i have kids traveling home to wisconsin and we've been here since noon. >> so two and a half hours in line. >> and we have a 2:30 flight.

>> reporter: and they didn't make it. and cancellations all because of a computer glitch that left passengers in limbo. flights could land but many could not takeoff nationwide. passengers were stunned to see the crowd as they arrived at the airport and got in the cue. >> i don't have wings and i can't comply. >> so you are stuck in line. >> and so you make the best of it. >> reporter: she has the right kind of attitude there. same situation down in san jose airport, as you could see from sky 7. the southwest flights could land but they could not take off from about 12:30 until about 2:00 today. very similar situation over here at oakland airport. flights resumed at 2:03 p.m. but you could imagine the domino, the ripple effect on all of the flights nationwide running late by several hours. so there is still a long line here and if you are -- if you have a flight to take out tonight, expect some delays and check online before you head to

the airport and allow extra time. leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. happening now. sky 7 hd live over a protest in the mid market area of san francisco. we're told this is a labor protest by members of seiu. demonstrators began blocking traffic on market street half an hour ago and they are now on the sidewalk. no word on how long that demonstration will last but commuters may want to avoid the mid-market area. in oakland, activists are outside of the police officers association and they have chained themselves to doors. could you see their necks and they have the bike lock on the necks and they will occupy the space for 24 hours. they say it is in response to the violence against black people in the bay area and across the nation. and turning to the weather. a live look from the east bay hills camera and a warm-up is coming. >> was that great america this morning. spencer christian here with the accuweather forecast. it is a good day to get in the water park.

happened and furthermore how he got it or how he could possibly drive for almost a mile just killing all of these wonderful lives. not only our son but other people that died. we met the other american family, they lost their 11-year-old boy and you walk down and you see the flowers of all of the kids and it was just like a senseless -- we're like -- we're short for words. >> reporter: his parents went to france after hearing the news. >> we heard that he didn't make it and so -- i don't know what to say. >> reporter: when they landed in paris, still in the plane on the tarmac, they heard a voice mail. their son hadn't made it. >> we thought that he would be here and we brought other clothes and just a missing person in the hospital they couldn't identify and we thought he would be here. >> reporter: he was part of a study abroad program. >> the professors from berkeley and the program managers for the

program he was involved, and most important the students that we met that were his classmates in this program were here and greeted us, they supported us and they did everything and went out to the hospital looking for him. the only thing that keeps us going is that we had 20 incredible years with our son. he was a very special boy. we loved him very much. he wasn't only our son but he was our friend. >> reporter: he was part of a four-week entrepreneurship program along with 85 other cal students and he was a junior and grew up in san diego but came up to the bay area for college. in the newsroom, jessica castro, abc 7 news. in san francisco, police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead. it happened just after noon at 23rd and dakota streets. the man was shot multiple times. paramedics were unable to revive him. so far no word from police on the motive or if they've identified a suspect. >> in oakland six people walked out of a building overnight with

their hands in the air after a shooting. we were over east 12th street and 15th avenue where a six-hour long standoff followed. police arrested two people for the shooting and police found a shotgun and a replica handgun inside and one person is shot and out of the hospital. and former science employee is headed to prison. a u.s. district court judge sentenced ward for 18 months for embezzlement. she pled guilty to stealing $390,000 while working at berkeley from 2008 to 2014. she admitted using the travel system to arrange personal airline trips and selling airline tickets for profit. still ahead at 4:00, much-needed relief for commuters in the east bay and big improvements making lives easier. >> and why firefighters say it will take days to put out this fire in petaluma. >> this is a good opportunity for a criminal. >> a warning from police ahead of tonight's big pokemon go

in the norm bay, a fire ate dairy facility could continue to burn for several days. the barn is filled with 400 tons of hay. firefighters say it will take at least until tomorrow and possibly until saturday to put it out. video tweeted out by oakland firefighters shows the aftermath of a fire at a hoarder home.

the home at 47th and foothill is abandoned but it is filled with clothing and books and furniture, standing more than four feet high. in fact, you could barely see the firefighter making his way through the items there. the hoarding conditions made it difficult for firefighters to put that fire out. the long wait is finally over for drivers in eastern contra costa county. >> the project to widen the highway through pittsburgh is done. >> and they were over the scene this morning for the official opening. eric thomas is live along the highway to check it out. >> reporter: transit planners would consider this portion of highway 4 to be one of the two or three worse commute corridors in the bay area. traffic in the afternoon used to start backing up now, but look at it. not any more. cutting the ribbon this morning was actually a formality. the new lanes of highway 4 have

been open for a couple of weeks now. and area transportation officials say it is already having an impact. >> it is doing what it is supposed to be doing, that is making sure that the roadway is safer and the commute is safer and more addition and more reliable. >> the six-year, $1.3 billion project widen highway 4 from four to eight lanes in pittsburgh to west of state route 160 in antioch and two lanes from lone tree way in brentwood. >> and it is better now. >> reporter: tow truck driver rich williams said it shaved off 15 minutes off his trip to rescue-stranded drivers and he is not along. this man commutes from his home in brentwood. >> it would take me 45 minutes but now it only takes me about 20 minutes. >> reporter: they provided time lapse pictures of the construction. the widening project includes a

special median set up for a b.a.r.t. station. but it is not perfect. some say they've moved the choke point to the intersection of highway 4 and 242. financing was with voter approved sales tax increases that pay the freight. >> and that is the model. and the public has to see that when they vote for bond measures there is something in it for them. >> that is a heads up that transit officials are depending less on sacrament and washington and more on voters for projects. eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> transportation officials are looking into adding an express lane on highway 101 between interstate 380 near sfo and it is a car pool lane that solo drivers could pay to use. the transportation authority will look at several options but believe money express lane is the only way to go. the study is expected to take more than two years to complete and it cost $11.5 million.

bicyclists are getting a shortcut in and out of the golden gate park. we were at the intersection of 7th avenue and lincoln way and a cyclist tried out the cutouts. bicyclists had to maneuver around turning cars at the intersection and cyclists have their own traffic light to avoid collision news the biggest name in hot rod racing made a pit stop in san francisco. john force tried his hand at tracking crabs. he may have taken some time picking out the crab meat, but on the track, he set the pace. a blistering 330 miles per hour and the most wings in drag racing history but at age 67 force is slowing down slightly and still not ready to call it quits. >> if this was nascar or indy car, i would be retired 20 years ago. you heard that jeff gordon retired and now he is back in

low clouds expanding overnight. much warmer days ahead beginning friday. and triple-digit temperatures inland likely over the weekend. let's take a look at overnight conditions. low temperatures mainly in the mid-50s. perhaps upper 40s in the valleys, like napa and santa rosa and the expansion of the low clouds and fog across the golden gate and across the bay but not very far inland. as the morning commute begins, low clouds should not be a significant factor in slowing down the morning commuter unless you are along the coastline where clouds are thicker. notice, if you could confine it to the bay and the coast in the early morning hours but we pull back to the coast line in the early to mid morning and by day partly sunny at the coast by afternoon. and it will be cool to mild tomorrow. breezy on the coast. highs from upper 50s to low 60s in the coast. a low to mid-70s mostly around

the bay. and low to mid-80s for the most part inland, but up to about 88 at antioch. now on friday, the warm-up begins. we'll see typical temperatures with highs in the low 90s inland on friday. and then a big weekend warm-up advances on saturday with inland highs in the upper 90 toss about 100 up in cloverdale. warmer in the forecast period and maybe sunday mild to hot with upper 90s to 100 in places like fairfield and concord and livermore and 100 or above for the feels-like in cloverdale. so here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. upper 90s inland by saturday and up to or above 100 inland on sunday. notice not much of a cool down on monday, tuesday and wednesday of the we won't see triple-digits but we will see mid to upper 90s. so the warmth will hold on for a while inland but there won't be a big warm-up around the bay or on the coast. just mild conditions there. the hot weather confined to the inland areas. larry and kristen. >> thank you, spencer.

years, an openly gay man will address the delegates at the gop convention. >> peter teal is a well-known conservative. lyanne melendez live with more on the what the lgbt community is saying. >> to tell you the truth, not impressed. and neither is silicon valley, which doesn't see eye to eye with mr. trump on a number of issues. rather than attend the gop convention, tv personality and republican supporter caitlyn gender opted to attend a brunch in cleveland hosted by conservatives calling for lgbt rights. >> we're part of society. we're out there. we're part of humanity. it is not like all of a sudden this issue just came up over the past few years over bathroom issues or this or that or equal rights. >> reporter: the trump campaign never invited jenner to speak to delegates as some had hoped. instead they tapped peter tale, a gay conservative. >> i think this is going to be one of the interesting moments

or refunded? >> no. they are not going to cancel them. but they will issue you new cards. but you have to prove that the cards were bought by your son or yourself and they weren't used. could you do that with the -- you could do that with the receipt. if your son hung on to the receipt or the code on the back of the card that activates it, best thing to do is take a picture when you buy a gift card. if you could prove that, you are good to go. if yo if your son or you have a rewards card with the store or the organization, often they are recorded automatically there. those are the three best shots to go. and really, any time you have a gift card, you need to record it immediately and then you should use it as soon as you can as well. >> that is great advice, michael. sophie from pacifica e-mails, my partner paid cash for a muni past past and i have a clipper card and was recharged but he wasn't. do cash riders get to ride longer without getting charged a second time but clipper card users have to pay again? >> that is a good question. but i think there is something

wrong with your card. the mtc said everybody gets to travel for 90 minutes and then you are recharged so call up and tem them there is something wrong with your card and have them fix it. >> and shelly k. said i would like to know when is the best time to buy a car, new or used. >> for new cars, and really for used too, it is the end of the model year and the end of the month. it is a critical time for the dealerships. because everybody is trying to make the quota. they get money back from the dealerships. spiffs are given to sales people so the end of the month is good. so the end of the model year and nobody wants an old car hanging around because once you've ticked past the model year, that car is worth less money and the dealerships don't want to have the car and sales people get extra spiffs to get them off the lot. that is the best time. but the sales right now are excellent and when they offer financing often those deals are so good that is the best time to

it is a pokemon problem for all of the people expected to gather out here. so this is what we've been seeing this afternoon. basically it is this loading error. you get an exclamation point and said the server is loading but for some it is taking a long time or it is just not loading at all. and here here on the embarcadero and this is one of two starting points and the other is at a park and it is the idea for people to catch as many pokemon while socializing and drinking. it is easy to see who might attend a pokemon party. players can't seem to hide their love for the game. >> i don't see why you wouldn't be playing it. >> it is a way -- it is fun and addicting. >> reporter: so why not expand on that fun. >> combine two great things, pokemon and hugs. >> and that was sandra's idea. she didn't think much when she posted the event to facebook. >> and i woke up the next day and there was 500 people going and by the end of the day there was 2,000 and now i think there

escalating today, right outside the arena. at the entrance where most of the delegates come into the arena every day, this afternoon there was some tension, some violence and we found ourselves right in the middle of it. this is what happened after a protester tried to burn an american flag in the streets just outside of the rnc in cleveland. that prompted this response from police. some in heavy riot gear and used pepper spray and there were scuffles and some injuries and several arrests. the man who tried to burn the flag was arrested. a cleveland police spokesperson explained why. >> we have a law against open burning in the city of cleveland and that would be consideringed open burning. it is not about the flag, it is about open burping. >> we have $20 hats. >> reporter: a half a block from the
