[ applause ] >> would you join me in welcoming the light of my life, my mom, nancy? >> and he spoke about his mother. he spoke about his father who has since passed away. his wife of 31 years, karen, and we mentioned the kids a little earlier.

♪ as we reach the climax of this year's republican national conventional, we are finding out more details object the movers and shakers on the floor of the q arena. >> there are 2,472 delegates there. many of them are first timers. t.j. holmes got to know three of them. >> reporter: 24-year-old georgia delegate katie frost had an emotional fairwell from her sisters. >> getting ready to board the bus. >> next a 14 hour bus ride from north carolina. and for henry of texas, it's a family affair. joining his mom who is also a delegate.

guy? >> he became my choice after my first choice was no longer available. >> i think the delegates are going to have to work a little harder maybe to become cheerleaders. >> we have to be enthusiastic about, making sure, well, it can't be hillary clinton. >> reporter: the party in cleveland may be underway, but the delegates know there's a lot of work to do on the road to election day. >> so with 18 out of the 2,472, that's roughly less than 75%, .75% delegates are black. >> that delegate said he's trying to change it. we'll see how he does in the coming years. when you read through the process to be a delegate, it's interesting. there are even three kinds of delegates that get there a different way. it's a little complicated. >> and then you have to pay to get there on your own. hope the parties are worth it. >> this is abc's "world news now" informing insomniacs for

>> good morning, i'm kendis gibson. good morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. there are some of the top headlines we're watching on "world news now." outrage at the convention. ted cruz gets booed off the stage after refusing to endorse donald trump. the delegates were so angry, cruz's family was whisked away from the crowd. so what does trump have to say now? we have more coming up. and the she secret service investigating a trump adviser who said hillary clinton should be put in a firing line and shot for treason. he made the remark in a radio interview while explaining that clinton should pay for the benghazi attempt. a murder suspect who escaped last friday has been recaptured. he slipped out of his jump suit handcuffs and shackles and dashed out the courthouse door.

he was captured last night at a hotel. and the heat wave has millions of americans looking for any way to cool off. watches and warnings in effect for most of the north and the south. those are some of our top stories for this thursday, july 21st. >> from abc news, this is "world news now." today at the convention, i think it will be relatively calm. so we're going to start with what really was an ugly turn by many determined at the republican national conventional. we'll start with what was an ugly turn at the republican national convention. delegates booing cruz off the stage because he did not endorse donald trump. >> the words of support that he refused to utter stole some thunder from mike pence, and donald trump then made an entrance while cruz was not even done speaking yet. abc's marcy gonzalez has the latest from cleveland. marcy, a lot going on there. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: oh, yeah, it was

quite a moment. the crowd absolutely erupted over that whole thing with ted cruz. but meanwhile, trump's running mate did get a much warmer reception. the man the gop hopes will unify the party behind donald trump taking center stage. >> we have but one choice. and that man is ready. this team is ready. our party is ready. >> reporter: indiana governor mike pence accepting the vice presidential nomination. night three of the republican national convention, revving up with two of trump's most attacked former rivals, marco rubio -- >> after a long and spirited primary, the time for fighting each other is over. >> reporter: -- and ted cruz addressing the party. >> i want to congratulate donald trump on winning the nomination last night. >> reporter: but still not endorsing trump. booed by the crowd just as trump walked into the vip box to watch

his son eric speak. >> dad, you have once again taught us by example. you are my hero. you are my best friend. you are the next president of the united states. >> reporter: now onto the final night of the convention. donald trump will be introduced by his daughter ivanka and then formally accept the party's nomination. kendis and diane? >> and what have you learned about john kasich? apparently approached by donald trump to be a potential running mate? >> reporter: that's what we're hearing. two advisers tell abc news that the trump camp did approach kasich's team to ask if he had any interest in the vp role. he was also reportedly, according to advisors approached by donald trump jr. who said in the vice president role that kasich would be able to be in charge of both domestic and

foreign policy. they said well then what would donald trump be doing, and they were reportedly told, according to these advisors that he would be in charge of making america great again. so kasich denied the offer and now trump tweeted out saying that he never offered the v.p. spot to kasich. >> here's one prediction i'll make this morning. as part of the cabinet, if there's a trump cabinet. ted cruz won't be there. >> that's a pretty good bet. >> thank you, marcy. appreciate it. live for us in cleveland. an aide to ted cruz said donald trump told cruz two days ago that he would not endorse him. >> after more on the tense atmosphere at the convention hall, let's go to abc's political director rick kline. rick, good morning. >> reporter: the trump convention felt like a trump rally, spiraling out of control. ted cruz deciding not to endorse donald trump and the delegates realized what was going on, and they began chants and cheers and threats of violence against cruz's wife and his father.

before it was done, donald trump had to make an early entrance and mike pence, his running mate, made an energetic pitch to delegates that was very well received by pence. but ted cruz was ready to hijack this convention with the same forces that we have seen donald trump unleash at rallies across the country. diane and kendis? >> rick, thank you. after 36 hours of denials, the trump campaign has admitted the melania speech included lines from michelle obama's 2008 speech. >> melania's speech writer came forward with an apology and an explanation. but it looks like no one with lose their job. now we get more from abc's tom llamas. >> reporter: donald trump landing in cleveland and into the fiasco taking over his convention. donald trump just landed in cleveland and is taking off right now to get closer to the convention hall. one thing we noticed when he touched down, no sign of melania trump. this was the last time we saw her, following her husband into trump tower as news was breaking

that parts of her convention address were lifted from michelle obama's 2008 convention speech. >> because we want our children and all children in this nation to know -- >> because we want our children in this nation to know -- >> that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them. >> that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them. >> reporter: initially the campaign in full denial mode. >> to say that she lifted any words from anyone is absurd. >> reporter: but a shocking admission. the trump campaign releasing a letter from melania's speech meredith mciver who described herself as an in-house staff writer at the trump organization and a long-time friend and admirer of the trump family. she says she worked on the speech with melania, adding, quote, we discussed many people who inspired her.

a person she has always liked is michelle obama. mciver says melania read her passages from mrs. obama's 2008 speech adding, quote, i wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. she claims she, quote, did not check mrs. obama's speeches. the question now, did melania trump not recognize that the words she spoke were virtually identical to the michelle obama quotes she read to her speech writer? mciver offered to resign but trump refused to let her go. now she's apologizing for the whole mess saying this was my mistake and i feel terrible for the chaos that i have caused melania and the trumps as well as mrs. obama. as for donald trump, well, he's trying to spin a story that doesn't seem to go away. tweeting, good news is melania's speech got more publicity than any in the history of politics especially if you believe that

police misconduct led to their convictions. neither witness confessed and there was no evidence. they long claimed they were set up by a chicago police detective who is being investigated for several other wrongful convictions. and we have travel troubles to tell you about, but first in denver, a semi truck rolled over onto a ramp. then the trailer splits open almost like a beer can. the whole thing was ironic because it was actually hauling a beer, a lot that ended up on the interstates below. a front end-loader was used to clear the debris. the truck driver was not injured. okay. so then in cincinnati the problem was horses. several of them shut down traffic in both directions on interstate 74 yesterday. >> it wasn't immediately clear who the horses belonged to or how they ended up on the highway. but some handlers were brought in and got everything under control after a while. and the horses, themselves, have not helped clear up any of the mystery. people keep asking them where

let's go now to abc's adrienne bankert. >> yes, while the theme of the night was "make america first" another topic came to the forefront, race. a recent washington post poll, three out of four african american voters have an unfavorable view of trump. 83% saying the president should have a major focus on improving race relations. the tone of the night appeared to several times convey diversity. speakers ranging from ceo, harold hamm, the 13th child of white sharecroppers who spoke of picking cotton barefoot. he and kentucky state senator ravel ralph alvarado jr. who spoke in english and spanish about the pursuit of the american dream. >> hispanics believe what republicans believe, traditional family values, the dignity of work, and the opportunity for self-sufficiency that comes from

a free society and a limited government. >> there was also lynn patton mentioning the orlando shooting. she declared trump would work for all people. >> i'm proud to stand in front of you tonight to support donald trump, not just despite the color of my skin, but it is actually because of the color of my skin. >> i'm sure there were many speakers who went on and on to try to give a diverse picture to the whole trump campaign. >> absolutely. in fact, some of the things lynne mentioned was she was very proud to be an african-american supporter of trump. which as we have seen in polls and really as we have seen across the convention floor, there haven't been a lot of african-american voices speaking out in support of donald trump. but her conversation as well as others there say that those voices do exist. >> now, we have heard a lot of blue lives matter and that

message on the convention floor. did it seem like the messages were going against each other or conflicting or were they trying to bring them together? because they are not necessarily just opposed, of course. >> it was interesting when lynne patton, the woman we spoke of lastly, she spoke of the controversial topics. you didn't hear this rousing applause during that particular part of her speech. and rightly so. i mean, i don't know that it would have been appropriate. but, at the same time, these are topics that the whole country is talking about. trump's organization, trump -- his campaign is certainly going to be working on as well. >> the good news is they have amarosa in charge of african-american outreach. we'll be right back.

waldo come to life at a children's hospital. that's in the mix on this thursday, july 21st. >> from abc news, this is "world news now." food is my impression of watching the republican national convention today. it's just like -- no, he didn't. oh, did he just say what i thought he said? >> no shortage of eventful moments for sure. >> it was really entertaining. >> good morning, everyone. i'm diane macedo. >> good morning. >> kendis is enjoying his popcorn this morning. lots of drama at the republican national convention as ted cruz riled up the crowd, refusing to endorse donald trump. >> cruz only mentioned trump once, to congratulate him on winning, and then that sound you heard was him being loudly booed after encouraging americans to vote their conscience. some delegates were so angry they started to approach cruz's wife heidi, and she had to be escorted out of the arena.

>> donald trump responded with a tweet saying, wow, ted cruz got booed off the stage, didn't honor the pledge. i saw his speech two hours earlier but let him speak anyway. no big deal. abc's marcy gonzalez has the latest from cleveland. marcy, did it seem like a big deal there? it seemed watching it. >> reporter: it did. the crowd was in an uproar over ted cruz. but i tell you, trump's running mate got a much warmer reception. the man the gop hopes will help unify the party behind donald trump taking center stage. >> we have but one choice, and that man is ready. this team is ready. our party is ready. >> reporter: indiana governor mike pence accepting the vice presidential nomination. night three of the republican national convention, revving up with two of trump's most attacked former rivals.

marco rubio -- >> after a long and spirited primary, the time for fighting each other is over. >> reporter: -- and ted cruz addressing the party. >> i want to congratulate donald trump on winning the nomination last night. >> reporter: but still not endorsing trump. booed by the crowd just as trump walked into the vip box to watch his son eric speak. >> dad, you've once again taught us by example. you are my hero. you are my best friend. you are the next president of the united states. >> reporter: trump, meanwhile, defending his wife and the speech writer who has now apologized admitting she was behind what many claimed to be plagiarism in melania trump's opening night speech. >> she made a mistake and i thought it was terrific the way she came forward and said, look, it was a mistake i made. and she thought it was very

unfair to melania. >> reporter: and now on to the final night of the convention when trump will be introduced by his daughter ivanka, and then he'll formally accept the party's nomination. >> all right. there's going to be quite a few fireworks as well. i am curious, though, there were other speakers along with ted cruz tonight. overall, who got the biggest reaction? >> reporter: definitely ted cruz got the biggest reaction, but other than him, this was meant to be and it was, mike pence's night. the crowd really seemed fired up at times he was interrupted by the crowd cheering "usa! usa!" the other chant "lock her up!" it's become a popular anti-clinton chant here at the convention. and mike pence had the opportunity to highlight his apparent capabilities, at least in trying to unite this party. >> marcy, there didn't seem to be as many protesters inside today. was it the same for those there, and what was going on with the protests outside as well?

>> reporter: yeah. we didn't see any protesters inside, but outside things were a bit more heated than we have seen over the past few days. at least 17 people were arrested. some of them accused of trying to burn the american flag. others arrested for failing to disperse, and then a few of them for hurting several police officers. we're told two police officers at least were assaulted. we're told they have minor injuries. >> all right. day four will be quite a showdown. marcy, let's go back to day one and the melania trump speech gate controversy. >> the story that never ends. >> apparently there is an end to it, an update? >> reporter: there is an update. so a trump staff writer came forward and admitted it was her mistake. she says that she had a conversation with melania trump about the kinds of messages she wanted to be in this speech and that melania trump mentioned some parts of mrs. obama's speech.

and so the speech writer meredith mciver say, quote, i wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the behind speech. so she says that she tried to resign but it was rejected. and donald trump talked about that last night to george stephanopoulos, and he said that he really appreciated that she admitted that she made the mistake and that's why he wouldn't let her resign over it. >> so finally we get some answers as to what took place on that first night. marcy gone zalez live for us in cleveland. thank you. the convention wraps up tonight focusing on unity with the theme "make america one again." >> before donald trump takes the stage, we'll hear from his daughter ivanka, jerry falwell jr. and reince priebus. we'll have a special report tonight at 10:00 p.m. eastern time. and now to our other top story this morning. the extreme heat and humidity hitting most of the country with no relief in sight.

lam eluding unarmed deputies, slipped out of his jump suit, shackles and dashing out of the courthouse. five people were charged for helping in the escape. officials in florida are working to investigate a possible case of home grown zika. the patient in miami-dade had not traveled to any country with the ongoing zika virus infection. if confirmed it will be the first case here in the u.s. but in order for there to be a local zika transmission area, there needs to be at least two nearby cases of zika not due to travel or sexual transmission. and as investigators look into that, president obama says more federal money is being sent to that state. and there's a major recall of hot dogs and corn dogs over fears of listeria. bar s foods is recalling nearly 400 nourngds of chicken and pork hot dogs and corn dog products that could be contaminated. so far no illnesses have been reported. for more information on what's being recalled go to abcnews.com. and it wouldn't be a day

♪ there's a full roster of speakers last night at the republican national conventional, but one speech in particular triggered a lot of reaction from delegates on the floor. >> i think the first name starts with ted. okay. so as we mentioned, cruz's address started out well but then it took a turn. adrienne bankert joining us with new details we're learning right now. >> it depends on who you ask. >> it was the most moving point of the convention so far, possibly. it was emotional, unifying up until that point. then some in the crowd turned to boos, an awkward moment, an angry crowd for the senator for not making it clear that he endorsed trump. >> if you love our country and love your children as much as i

know that you do, stand and speak and vote your conscious. vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the constitution. >> some cheers and a whole lot of booing. the tipping point there, delegates shouting endorse him, do it. country first. others shouting "give the endorsement ted and pledge." as the tension mounted cameras showed donald trump walking into the arena while ted cruz delivered his final lines. at the same time, heidi cruz was escorted out of the arena. >> people from my own delegation were physically approaching her while yelling at her. >> yeah. newt gingrich also speaking later, quote, paraphrasing cruz's commentary saying voting for someone who will back the constitution could only mean voting for trump.

and chris christie saying it was an awful selfish speech. >> coming from chris christie, that's something. >> trump said i saw it and let him speak anyway. it's no big deal. have other republicans weighed in? >> twitter is ablaze saying cruz guaranteed no future success in the arena. but interestingly enough, he was walking out of the arena with his wife saying, i think it went well. it was fun. then upon arriving at his hotel, the texas delegation greeting him saying, we're behind you, ted, all the way. he again said i appreciated the warm welcome inside the arena, and i think it went well, so it appears that he's trying to keep away from saying donald trump's name at all. he said that he was talking about whoever the next president would be, and that it was clear that he wanted them to back the constitution. >> and he initially tweeted out some praise for the speech, and then those tweets have since been deleted.

speech of trump's vice presidential pick, indiana governor mike pence. >> i'm a christian, a conservative and a republican in that order. >> reporter: trump strode out on stage to congratulate his guy and to sort of give him an awkward air kiss. the day started with another dramatic entrance for trump. here he's touching down in his chopper. we saw him walking alongside his adult children, but interestingly, not his wife, melania. the last time we saw her here it was right after giving that now infamous speech with those striking similarities to michelle obama's convention speech from 2008. an employee of the trump organization named meredith mciver released a letter taking the blame saying melania read me some passages from mrs. obama's speech as examples. i wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. this was my mistake. left unanswered, why did melania

herself not recognize the similarity to the passages she had personally shared with mciver? mciver said she offered her resignation to mr. trump and the trump family, but they rejected it. the trump family continued the dominance of this convention following in the footsteps of his siblings tiffany and donald jr., eric trump taking the stage. >> vote for the one candidate that does not need this job. >> reporter: it's ivanka's turn. she's often described as her father's favorite and will introduce her dad for what will be the most important speech of his life. >> dan harris there. and hillary clinton immediately pounced tweeting, vote your conscience with a link to her website. chris christie was furious calling cruz selfish and trump took a swipe at cruz for not honoring the pledge to candidates made to support the nominee. but he said it was no big deal. let's get more now from marcy gonzalez. she is in cleveland.

marcy, take us back to that moment toward the end of ted cruz's speech. >> yeah, the crowd absolutely erupted in boos. it was the loudest we've heard the crowd so far in this convention. once they realized that cruz was not going to endorse trump. he made one mention there in the beginning of the speech, congratulating trump in getting the nomination, but then never mentioned his name again. as you heard there, heidi cruz and cruz's father were getting yelled at and heckled. they were brought out. and trump, as you mentioned, tweeted he didn't honor the pledge to endorse the nominee, saying i saw his speech earlier and let him speak anyway. no big deal. and overnight cruz was at his hotel and greeted from cheers by his delegation. he was asked why he didn't endorse trump and he gave a really vague answer. he said i laid out a simple standard for a president who be

faithful to the constitution. i hope very much that is who the next president will be. i'm not sure what that means? >> many people calling it political suicide what he did. so what's ahead in the final day here? >> reporter: we know ted cruz has an event with the texas delegation in the morning, so he'll definitely be asked about that again. but then it's on to the final day of the convention. the theme is "make america one again" and it is all about donald trump. so he'll be introduced by his daughter ivanka and then he'll formally accept the nomination. >> that's marcy gonzalez live from cleveland for us. thank you. a high pressure system that forecasters call a heat dome is suffocating a lot of the country, and experts say it's not moving away any time soon. >> that heat dome is pushing conditions to their hottest points so far this summer. joining us is accuweather's paul williams joining us with the details. paul, good morning. >> good morning, diane and kendis. we have a dominant high pressure system that began picking a

fight with everybody in the midwest with heat that reaches from houston and the gulf up toward north and south dakota and the great lakes. this spreads like a wildfire, and this heat will expand as the high pressure system journeys more to the northeast. widespread heat hitting thursday and friday in areas where they're not used to it. triple digits everywhere, even as far north as the most northern tip of wisconsin going into minnesota. this intense heat will continue to grow, but with that in mind, around it we have a bit of a ring of fire happening. scattered showers on the outer fringes of this heat. in here are various heat watches and warnings. kendis, diane? >> our thanks to paul. it's been a terrible night mare for people trying to fly southwest airlines. thousands of flights were delayed or canceled yesterday after a ground stop blamed on technical issues. people couldn't check in or check their flight status. last night the airline tweeted it was still manually checking

in passengers. police in north miami, florida, are under scrutiny following the shooting of an unarmed black man. videos show the man with his hands in the air, laying on the ground. the person sitting next to him is an autistic man who kinsey cares for. he was trying to get the man back to facility after he wandered off. you can see one police officer nearby there. kinsey can be heard saying he nor the patient had a gun as his patient was apparently shouting "shut up!" the officer then apparently fired three shots hitting kinsey in the leg. >> i said, i got shot. i said, why did you shoot me? and his words to me, he said, i don't know. >> the officer who fired the shot hasn't been identified. and has been put on administrative leave. kinsey's family said they want the officer punished. they say they were there at the scene responding to reports of a man with a gun.

also caught on camera, a man in southern california setting brush fires. a photographer live streamed the whole event. the man running around lighting fires and screaming. he suffered from second-degree burns and was arrested for arson. the fire grew to more than a dozen acres and charred a couple of power poles. no structures damaged. also in southern california officials are hoping to reopen five miles of coastline after a sewage spill. there was a spill of 2 million gallons into storm drains that feed into the los angeles river. tests tuesday show no excessive levels of bacteria along the beaches. whales are having a field day -- wow, with folks looking for a little recreation on the water. this kayaker was out for a day of fishing on half-moon bay when
