"abc7 news" starts right now with live breaking news. >> good evening. we begin with breaking news tonight. right now, there's a manhunt under way for a gunman who shot at a police officer. the call came in, in oakland a little more than an hour and a half ago. and we're live in oakland with more on this story. sergio? >> reporter: there is a pretty large area that has been cordoned off around this crime scene. i'm going to step aside here. you can probably see in the distance a cluster of police lights. that's where we believe the investigation of this shooting at a police officer is focused right now. let's go through some of the basics. that officer was shot at, but we are told that she was not hit by that gunfire. however, she was injured.

we do not know how she was injured, if she was not hit by that gunfire. that's one of the details we are trying to get from the police. we know she was taken to the highland and is speaking to investigators, and they are trying to piece together exactly what happened. we also know that the oakland police department has put out an all points bulletin for a suspect, but it's not a very detailed description. right now, we are waiting for a briefing from the police. as i mentioned earlier, they have cordoned off a large area out here and they have a helicopter overhead. we do not know if they are searching for a specific vehicle in this officer involved shooting. we also know there are a number of other agencies out here helping the oakland police department in this ongoing investigation. as soon as we get further details about that suspect and the condition of that police officer, we will be able to pass them along. reporting live in oakland, "abc7 news." >> thanks, sergio. for breaking news updates, get

the "abc7 news" app. we're also following developing news. an uber driver who picked up a driver has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault. we're live in palo alto with details. lisa? >> reporter: eric, the victim was picked up just down the broke on university avenue after midnight. she used the uber app on her phone and she opted for the uber pool which allows you to share the price with other passengers. when the driver showed up, he told her to get in the front seat with him. she said she didn't want to, but she did. and as soon as she sat in the front seat, the driver locked the doors. >> began touching her on the leg and upon arrival to the destination, he gave her a kiss. throughout that time, she was

let out, at which time she called the police department. >> reporter: this afternoon, police arrested a 59-year-old and charged him with sexual assault. he drives a dark maroon or burgundy 2014 kia optima. the reason police did not share his photo is because they don't want to generalize any potential cases that come up against him. live in palo alto, "abc7 news." >> thanks, lisa. right now, firefighters are trying to contain nearly a dozen large wildfires in california. the two largest are a 20,000 acre fire burning in los angeles county. and a 6500 acre fire burning in monterey county. tonight, bay area firefighters are heading to big sur to stop that enormous fire. this twitter picture shows the fire's ominous glow. in the last day, it's more than doubled in size from 3,000 acres to more than 6500 acres. >> today is what we call an

immediate need request, which means we have to have our engine staffed and on the road in one hour from the time of request. >> reporter: he says the crews from the fremont fire department are joining a team of firefighters from across departments in alameda county that totals 66 people. this is a serious deployment, and several bay area departments are responding. >> this is the first deploy men of the season for san francisco. >> he says san francisco is sending 22 people. the department tweeted pictures of some of the five engines on the way there. cal fire sent out the crew, because saturday winds shifted the direction of the fire north. planes are dumping fire retardant and helicopters are part of the attack. this is a fire close to the central coast in monterey county, so air ships are picking up ocean watt tore dump on the flames. more than a thousand homes are threatened. when crews arrive, many of the teams will help protect those

concord. a toasty 101 in livermore. 89 in san jose and a mild high even in san francisco of 73 degrees. and we have a spring of warm and hot days ahead. we'll talk about when the heat will peak in our accuweather forecast. >> drew, thanks a lot. a wildfire borning north of los angeles has exploded inside to 20,000 acres. tonight, it is 10% contained. the fire is burning where 1500 homes have been evacuated in santa clarita. it's not clear at this time what has been damaged. >> it could be homes, outbuildings, warns, we just don't know yet. we don't want to insert anybody in there until it's safe to do so. but there's fire on the ground surrounding them, we don't want to go in there. >> the area is under a red flag warning for triple digit heat. firefighters spent the evening putting out hot spots of

a brush fire near san jose. the fire generated a lot of smoke. firefighters quickly contained it. the afghan government is banning public gatherings for the next ten days after two sue so -- suicide bombings killing 80 people and wounding hundreds. the islamic state is claiming responsibility for the bombing. it's the first time the extremists have struck in kabul, raising fears of their growing strength in afghanistan. authorities say there are no ties to terror group in that deadly attack in germany that left ten dead. the shooter was among those killed. and we're learning more about what may have pushed him to violence. >> reporter: key details emerging about the gunman who went on a shooting rampage in muni munich. the 18-year-old revealed to be troubled, not a terrorist. a young student said to be

obsessed with school shootings. >> translator: what lies behind us and the people of munich is a night of horror. >> reporter: the violence broke out friday evening at a mcdonald's near a popular mall. cell phone video shows him drawing his glock pistol and starting to fire. another clip shows the gunman pacing on the roof top of a parking garage. he then raises his gun and appears to fire again. >> there were people running towards us, panniicking and in shock. >> reporter: he killed nine people before committing suicide. neighbors watched as authorities raided the apartment he shared with his parents. the 18-year-old iranian-german was born and raised in munich and suffered from depression. he had a book about school shootings and showed interest in the 2011 norwegian massacre at a youth camp. >> my guess is he's another kid that falls into this category.

fremont, palo alto, north bay, and all the bay area, this is "abc7 news." people in one san jose neighborhood are dealing with a lot of damage after a house party got out of control. in fact, things got so bad on mt. shasta drive early this morning, that the s.w.a.t. team responded. leslie brinkley has details. >> reporter: it wasn't just a house party. >> they came here and they broke all the windows. they had fun. and they left. >> reporter: neighbors and witnesses say it sounded like a riot erupting in their usually quiet neighborhood. saturday morning, there were broken windows, broken bottles, and fistfights between large groups of people who witnesses say appeared to be rival gang

members. more than 100 people. >> most of them are juveniles, out of control, drunk. >> reporter: san jose police rolled in and brought along their s.w.a.t. team. >> guns drawn. they wouldn't let us outside. >> reporter: 20 houses were placed on lockdown. neighbors say people jumped fences into their yards to urinate and to hide. they feared for their family's safety. the house was unoccupied. new owners were renovating it. police secured the house and detained several suspects. neighbors say they were thrilled to have the heavy police presence here. in san jose, leslie brinkley, "abc7 news." friends and neighbors held a block party in san jose to take back an alleyway known for drug use and prostitution. "abc7 news" was in san jose's business circle area where they gathered to celebrate community

today. the santa clara county attorney's office partnered with police to clean up the neighborhood and encouraged team to visit. >> remind them and show them that this is a safe place, that various agencies have worked to make it that way and get people out here meeting their neighbors. >> the 80 foot mural was commissioned by the district attorney as a grateway to the revamped neighborhood. now, just in the last couple of minutes or so, we just had a briefing from the public information officer with the oakland police department. she says that officer was shot at multiple times in her police vehicle. but she was not hit by that gunfire. unfortunately, she was injured somehow or another following those gunshots. let's go ahead and go to some of the sounds from the public information office we are the oakland police department. >> any time we have an incident where we have an officer that's shot at or even anyone else in our community that is shot at where a violent act is on another person, we will bring in our hostage negotiation team, as well as our tactical team, as we continue to follow up and identify who is responsible and locate them. that's part of the resources that we bring in.

>> reporter: now, she did not say that there is any reason to believe that there is a hostage that is being negotiated for. she was talking about the fact that they marshal out a whole lot of resources any time there's an incident like this. we do know that there is an all points bulletin made out to neighboring police officers for this suspect. at this point, however, we do not have a whole lot of specific information as to who the shooter is or what kind of vehicle they are driving. this is an investigation that is in progress. we know that they have a whole lot of resources from other departments as well. obviously, this is an incident that is very interesting to neighboring police departments, as well. as soon as we have have further information, we'll update you on this news cast if it becomes available. reporting live, "abc7 news."

>> sergio, thank you very much. a college athlete helped stop the sexual assault of a woman in florida. he was working security at a bar when he took out the trash and noticed a woman passed out and a man assaulting her. dp garcia along with another man, grabbed the attacker and held him for police. >> she could barely stand up and going in and out of consciousness. even if that is your girl, why would you be sexual with somebody that doesn't know what's going on? >> investigators believe this was not the suspect's first victim. garcia says he felt compelled to intervene. fire exploded in texas this morning, destroying a palate company. propane tanks and about 10,000 palates fuelled the fire. it destroyed trucks, forklifts and a mobile home where an employee lived. no one was hurt. the company was not insured.

and to try to keep the radio history of the radios themselves alive, because it's important. radio has affected our society in so many ways over the years. >> the event featured tours, musical performances and the induction of the 2016 bay area radio hall of fame class. steve cushman is an employio of kgo teach. a survey found it could be cheaper to pay for prescription drugs out of pocket than with insurance. >> reporter: she's having one of her better days. she often suffers from migraines. >> it feels like somebody is pounding on your head. >> reporter: to get through it, she takes on average one to two pills a day. her insurance limits her to one package for the entire month, which can run out in a week.
