that. >> cecilia, thank you. the hacked dnc e-mails revealing what democratic party leaders were saying about bernie sanders. tonight, the clinton camp with an eye-opening theory about who's behind the leak. the clinton campaign manager saying it's the russians trying to help donald trump. jonathan karl, did he really say that? >> he did. this is a huge allegation, david. this would make the watergate scandal look minor by comparison. here's what we know. about a month ago, the dnc computers were hacked by computers believed to be based in russia. but the clinton campaign presented no evidence that the computers were tied to the russian government. or that there was any collusion whatsoever with the trump campaign. they attribute it to experts. >> do we know if there was any pressure from the clinton camp for congressman wasserman schultz to resign? to sort of make sure we were talking about this on sunday night, and not monday, tuesday, wednesday, during the convention? >> make no mistake, she was pushed out.

the clinton campaign wanted to be done, turn the page. it also took a call from president obama to finally get her going. she is going to gavel in the convention, she is going to be here, and i'm sure the bernie sanders supporters will be booing her quite loudly. >> but a much smaller role. thank you, jon. in the meantime, the trump campaign already reacting, saying hillary clinton should drop out of the race, follow wasserman schultz's lead, due to clinton's own e-mail scandal. but donald trump himself is also responding to something else tonight. to those who say his convention speech was too dark. and four days after ted cruz was booed off the stage, trump is still talking about cruz. tom llamas on the campaign trail tonight. >> reporter: tonight, on the eve of the democratic convention, donald trump still bragging about his own big speech. tweeting out this video with an applause-o-meter, claiming 24 minutes of pure cheering.

live stream channel. and we turn to other news, the deadly heat and wildfires burning out of control at this hour. in los angeles, some homes already lost. hundreds of families forced to escape as the flames grow closer. the smoke reaching all the way to the city. at l.a.x., air quality alerts are already in place. phillip mena is on the fire lines for us. >> reporter: tonight, the massive wildfire raging just ten miles north of los angeles turning deadly. officials discovering a body inside the charred vehicle in this driveway. >> unfortunately that fire came through and blasted the backside of some of those homes. >> reporter: 1,500 homes evacuated. 18 now destroyed. fire sweeping down into the valleys, flames 40 feet high. >> there's a lot of devastation as you can see. around the hillsides here. >> reporter: 1,700 firefighters, even modified jumbo jets brought in to attack the blaze. choppers grabbing any available water to douse the flames. this used to be the set of many hollywood productions.

but today, firefighters are putting out the flames after it was burnt to rubble. this fire, just one of more than two dozen burning in ten states out west. david, the people living in this home, thankfully, able to escape with their lives. but tonight, no help for firefighters. it is hot and dry and no sign of rain ahead. david? >> phillip, thank you. next to the heat stretching from coast to coast tonight. the unrelenting heat and sun, heat alerts in more than two dozen states as we begin the new week. heat indices in the triple digits across this country. here's eva pilgrim. >> reporter: no relief tonight for 100 million people trapped in a deadly heat wave, already claiming at least 11 lives. >> heat exhaustion. heat stroke. patient is intubated. temperature is 102. >> reporter: in phoenix, arizona, a 12-year-old rushed to the hospital, died after a day hiking.

in st. louis, it felt like 112 with the humidity. places like dallas, nashville, d.c., heat index well over 100 degrees. a hot high dome straddles the east coast. near 100 tomorrow in d.c. and philadelphia, 90s through wednesday. here in central park, the running course of the new york triathlon was shortened today due to the extreme heat. david? >> rob marciano, tracking the heat all week for us, thank you. and from connecticut tonight, a pilot is now in the hospital after his plane spiraled and crashed into a home below. amazingly, the man inside the home also survived, escaping by just a few feet. here's adrienne bankert with the video tonight. >> reporter: the small plane seen spiraling and plunging into this home in just seconds. the man who shot this video running to the crash scene with others to help. >> we've got a report of a small plane crash on land. >> reporter: amazingly, that plane just missing norman hannenbaum, who was at home watching tv.

>> i ran outside and my neighbor hollered to me. he said, "there's a plane on your roof!" >> reporter: norman says he didn't even hear it coming. >> i guess if i had been another two, three feet closer, i would have been hit. >> reporter: the pilot airlifted from the wreckage but in critical condition tonight. he had just taken off from a local airport, when witnesses say the plane started struggling. one witness reported the plane barely cleared the trees after taking off from a nearby airport. tonight, the faa is investigating. david? >> adrienne, thank you. less than two weeks until the olympics, and u.s. athletes will now be competing against the russians after all. despite an international investigation that found wide-ranging, state-sponsored doping. the ruling was that individual bodies can decide whether or not the athletes can compete. tonight, russian officials are celebrating, because it looks like most of their national team

will be going to rio. from germany tonight, the third deadly attack in a week. this time, authorities say it was an asylum seeker from syria with a machete. the frightening scene playing out near stuttgart. injuring two people, and killing a woman. some reports saying a woman killed was pregnant. police say he had been arrested before. and there are no indications tonight this is terrorism according to officials. that attack, just two days after the horrific killing in munich. tonight, a clearer portrait emerging of the gunman, firing directly at people outside mcdonald's. he had been planning the attack for a year. and tonight, police have now arrested another teen that may have known about the plot, and failed to report it. here's alex marquardt. >> reporter: the attacker began his deadly rampage firing his gun at a mcdonald's. a moment, we learned tonight, that had been in the works for a year. officials saying today the gunman, identified by german media as ali sonboly, detailed how he would carry out the shooting spree in a manifesto and tried to lure victims by

posting an offer of free food on a fake facebook page. they also found his copy of peter langman's "why kids kill," which studies school shootings like columbine and virginia tech. he even visited the site of a 2009 german school shooting. tonight, authorities arrested one of his friends suspected of knowing about the plot. also tonight, in the german city of anspach, authorities said that some have died in an explosion. seven died at that mcdonald's, and two more elsewhere. almost all of the victims were fellow teenagers. the gun the attacker used was a semiautomatic glock 17 pistol, which officials said he appeared to have bought on the black market online, and was a restored theatre prop. david? >> alex, thanks. there's still much more ahead on "world news tonight" this sunday. the security breach at the major american airport, a man with no ticket, no bags, bypassing tsa. completely unnoticed. he made it on to the plane.

next at 6:00, two destructive california wildfires are quickly growing in size and impacting lives outside the burn zone. new details about an oakland police officer injured after a gunman opened fire on her. >> i think it's outrageous but not a great shock to me. >> bernie sanders and the clinton campaign talk about a scandal rocking the democratic party, one day before its convention begins. abc7 news at 6:00 starts now. that breaking news, fast-growing fire is burring along highway 4 in contra costa county, bringing traffic to a halt at firefighters try to contain it. drivers along highway 4 reported seeing flames near the culping skyway exist. a grassy area with not many

homes. lilian kim is live from the area. >> reporter: the fire started 4:30 this afternoon and spread to both sides of highway 4. last we heard from firefighters, 50 acres have burned and you can see the charred hillside. crews have been using heavy equipment to build a containment line. this chp had to top traffic on franklin canyon road because of downed power lines. it's unclear if the power lines caused the fire or came down because of the fire. crews are making progress. flames are now fully contained on the north site. fire on the south site is 35% contained. firefighters say structures are threatened. this is a rural area so there are horses, other animals, barns and other outbuildings in the fire's path as well as homes. at this point no confirmed reports of any damage to structures. now, we have been seeing crews attacking this fire from the air as well as from the ground. we'll keep you posted on
