streaking across the sky overnight, and this was no meteor. a mystery. we have the answer to that mystery. a good thursday morning to you all. we begin with hillary clinton preparing to take the stage for the final day of the dnc today. dnc, that is, today. this after some of the biggest names in politics delivered a rallying cry on her behalf yesterday. >> the biggest name, president obama, had the crowd on their feet even before he started speaking defending his own legacy and depicting donald trump as a bully who's unfit to be president. then there was a grateful hillary clinton who joined the president on stage after he praised her intelligence, toughness and tenacity. >> and vice president joe biden didn't mince any words as he ripped into trump accusing him of exploiting our fears. let's get the latest now from abc's lauren lyster live from philadelphia. lauren, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. democratic leaders really trying to pass the baton.

pennsylvania avenue transported here to this philadelphia arena, president obama giving a speech filled with hope of handing his job off to the new democratic nominee. ♪ signed sealed delivered i'm yours ♪ ♪ here i am baby >> reporter: a historic handoff. the country's first african-american president embracing its first female nominee for the office quite literally and with his impassioned convention speech. >> there has never been a man or a woman, not me, not bill, nobody more qualified than hillary clinton to serve as president of the united states of america. >> reporter: a surprise appearance from hillary clinton at the convention on a night where the current white house was in full force to show support for her and to take a stand against donald trump. >> america is already great. >> he's trying to tell us he cares about the middle class. give me a break. that's a bunch of malarkey.

>> reporter: the current vp -- >> hillary gets it. hillary understands it. >> reporter: and later the man hoping to take his spot, senator tim kaine. >> i trust hillary clinton with our son's life. >> reporter: and one billionaire businessman taking on another in mike bloomberg's attack of trump. >> i'm a new yorker, and i know a con when i see one. >> reporter: and donald trump's campaign responding to the dnc speeches overnight calling them empty rhetoric. of course, here tonight a big moment for hillary clinton when she is set to accept her party's nomination. kendis and diane. >> yeah, that, indeed. you know what i remember back in 2000, when bill clinton was saying good-bye to the office at the dnc, he had this long walk and highlighting his accomplishments. president obama did something a little bit different, in fact, kind of pointing out the somber moments. why did they do that, lauren? >> reporter: yeah, well, one of the things we were expecting last night was for the president to try to show what it takes to hold this office, to be

president of the united states. its not just stump speeches and wooing voters with your charisma but it's dealing with crises and tragedy, things like the sandy hook massacre and other horrible events, and he was trying to make the distinction in his speech in that video of the tough times kind of punctuated that, that this is a tough job and he was making the point that in his view with hillary clinton's resume, she is qualified to do it and donald trump is not. >> all right, certainly puts things into perspective as to how big of a job it really is. lauren lyster, thanks so much. some protesters are expected to gather around the convention center there in philadelphia for the fourth straight day. at least seven demonstrators were arrested last night after climbing a security fence. many of them are demanding sweeping democratic reforms. and not that they needed it, but democrats were armed with a new round of ammunition to use against donald trump last night handed to them by donald trump himself. >> earlier in the day trump

called on russia to hack hillary clinton's e-mails and release them publicly. abc's adrienne bankert is here to explain. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. democrats pouncing on donald trump's word to russia. his campaign manager says his comments were meant to be a joke about hillary clinton's handling of the now infamous e-mails. this morning, moscow is responding. donald trump igniting a firestorm. >> i wish i had that power. >> reporter: accusations he seemingly invites russia to meddle in the presidential election. others saying it's just sarcasm. >> russia, if you're listening, i hope you're able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. i think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. let's see if that happens. >> reporter: those missing e-mails from hillary clinton's private server when she was secretary of state, trump's comments come as speculation widens about russia's alleged involvement in the e-mail hacking of the democratic national convention committee. the republican presidential candidate standing firm after

being pressed by reporters. >> do you have any qualms about asking a foreign government, russia, china, anybody, to interfere, to hack into a system of anybody's in this country? >> it's up to the president. let the president talk -- >> does that not give you pause? >> no, gives me no pause. if they have them, they have them. you know what gives me more pause, that a person in our government, crooked hillary clinton, here's what gives me -- be quiet. i know you want to, you know, save her. >> reporter: overnight moscow responding saying russia would never interfere with another country's election. and trump's comments getting criticized at the dnc last night, retired navy rear admiral john hutson calling his actions criminal. >> this morning, this very morning, he personally invited russia to hack us. that's not law and order. that's criminal intent. >> reporter: but after trump's

comments online -- went online, rather, searches for the definition of treason surged. this morning a legal expert tells abc his comments are not criminal but protected free speech. kendis, diane. >> it was definitely free speech there for him. adrienne, thank you. and there's more controversy surrounding donald trump's wife this morning. according to "the huffington post," melania trump's professional website has been taken down. now, this comes as questions were being asked about her biography on the site which claims she has a degree in design and architecture. a book earlier this year had said that melania left college after just one year to pursue modeling. well, still ahead this morning, no winner in last night's powerball. the jumbo jackpot now the eighth largest ever. and chaos on board a flight. a man accused of assaulting a flight attendant. hear what started it all. plus, a football hall of famer showing off his wounds left by a shark.

this was the scene in los angeles last night as a car plowed into the front of a home where a bible study meeting was taking place. at least one person was killed, eight others hurt, some seriously. the female driver fled the scene after the accident and was being sought by police. the victims inside the house range in age between 40 and 80. we do have some new video this morning of that terror attack on a french church as it unfolded. you can see policemovingin on the church, shields up, the two attackers inside with the hostages, using them to block the door. one hostage is seen being led to safety. you see it right there. moments later the killer is running out shot dead by the police. isis has claimed responsibility and the pope reacting to the murder of the priest calling it an act of war. but pope francis clarifying his remarks saying it's not a religious war. meanwhile, pope francis had a bit of a scare this morning.

while giving mass in poland he suddenly stumbled and fell as he prepared to bless the altar but the pope immediately got back on his feet and went on to give the homily. last year questions about the pope's health surfaced after he fell twice in three days while giving mass. and the man who tried to assassinate president reagan could be a free man as early as next week. john hinckley jr. as seen here in a recent photo from thedailymail.com, he spent the last 35 years in a mental hospital, but now a judge says he's no longer a danger to himself or others. president reagan's oldest son said he and his father forgave nckley, but reagan's daughter, patti davis, says she's sickened by the judge's decision. so we're all familiar with those traffic cam posted at busy intersections. they're meant to catch drivers running red lights and it turns

toaster strudel. we are keeping an eye on the midwest overnight as tornado warnings are in effect in iowa, kansas, nebraska and wyoming. this picture shows a possible twister touching down in minnesota, as well. well, you saw those clear skies on the west coast. well, this is what they ended up seeing. streaking, bright objects put on a spectacular light show in the sky over the western states last night. they also lit up twitter with all kinds of speculations about the mystery glow, aliens, end of days, you name it. turns out the fireball was not a meteor or a falling satellite but debris from a chinese rocket launch late last month. >> last month? >> yeah, it takes a while to get back down. okay, back here on earth, you'll find several trouble spots on your morning commute. expect some flooding from the western plains south to the gulf coast and east into the mid-atlantic states. if you're flying, expect airport delays in memphis, denver and washington, d.c. and now to one of the most

moving and powerful moments from night three of the democratic national convention. >> former congresswoman gabby giffords was introduced by her husband, astronaut mark kelly. giffords, now a leading gun control advocate, nearly died when she was shot in the head five years ago. she appeared to struggle as she walked on stage then delivered a brief but captivating speech. >> speaking is difficult for me. but come january i want to say these two words, madam president. thank you very much. >> gifford says she's voting for hillary clinton because she'll stand up to the gun lobby. well, four missing boaters are safe this morning thanks to some quick action by the coast guard. after failing to return home from a day of snorkeling off key west, that family was found. the video captures one of the youngest of those rescued embracing family members on land. a concerned relative called the coast guard after the family

failed to return home on tuesday as planned. they were finally found last night a full day after being off at sea. they were 40 miles off the coast. a kentucky man accused of assaulting a flight attendant could face up to 20 years behind bars. the images of the aftermath caught here by another passenger. the man refusing to take his seat as a plane taxied to the gate. federal agents say he rushed to the front of the plane, kicked a flight attendant, knocked her to the ground and called her the "n" word. a football hall of famer warren sapp has a new injury and a new story to tell and neither have anything to do with the football field. this is sapp on the right with some friends after a lobster catching trip off the florida keys. but he was left with a nasty injury which we blurred here after he was attack ed by a shark during one of the dives. now, following the incident he was bandaged up. sapp then went back in the water before heading to port. >> yeah, because he'll tackle anything. >> well, they say get back on the horse. i guess it applies to the shark too. >> yeah, that poor shark facing warren sapp.
