[ cheering ] >> good evening. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. let's get right to abc 7 news reporter laura anthony, who is live at the democratic national convention in philadelphia. laura? >> hi, ama. well, it was really a stunning scene here earlier tonight. it was an emotional hillary clinton who walked out on to the stage here in the arena. her eyes were glistening. she took in this incredible ovation, hugged her daughter, and then accepted the nomination. and so hillary clinton begins the next chapter in her 40-year odyssey, one she hopes will end with an historic journey back to the white house. >> standing here as my mother's daughter and my daughter's mother, i'm so happy this day has come. i'm happy for grandmothers and

the white house. thinking was the first step, seeing a woman accept the democratic nomination. in san francisco, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. >> donald trump responded to clinton's speech tonight with five tweets about 20 minutes after she finished speak, including hillary will never reform wall street. she is owned by wall street. and hillary's vision is a borderless world where working people have no power, no jobs, no safety. >> one of clinton's goals was to reach moderate voters who may be unhappy with donald trump. >> abc 7 news political analyst and politico reporter carla marinucci said clinton nailed it tonight. >> but she hit all the points tonight when it came to unity in america, patriotism, you know, strength in military defense, and i think the economy. announcing that she is going to have in her first 100 days the largest job program since world war ii. so i think these are all issues that are going to appeal to a lot of moderate voters. and that's exactly what hillary

clinton needs to do. >> and carla believes the race for the presidency will be one of the nastiest our nation has ever seen. >> our coverage of the dnc continues tomorrow on abc 7 news. abc 7 news anchor reggie aqui will report from philadelphia. new at 11:00, police in pacifica arrested a man accused of using the date rape drug in several sex crimes. police say joseph courtney found his victims on websites and through smartphone apps. they say he contacted several boys for sex, and his crimes go back to 2007. tonight we have new details on a kidnapping attempt in san leandro. police released this sketch of the suspect. abc 7 news reporter elisa harrington is live in san leandro with more on how a good samaritan is being called a hero for likely saving the woman's life. elisa? >> this could have had a much different outcome if the good samaritan wasn't at the right place at the right time. he saw the attack happen and jumped out of his car to help.

even after getting pepper sprayed in the face, he was able to stop that kidnapping. san leandro police say the 23-year-old victim was walking to work around 7:45 in the morning when the suspect, seen in this police sketch, sprayed her in the face with mace or pepper spray. he then tried to drag the woman into his car. neighbors heard screaming and called 911. >> she was incapacitated by the mace. she wasn't in a position to be able to fight back. and what i understand is that she actually felt her feet enter the car. so it was that close to him getting her into the car and leaving. >> this happened on washington avenue, a busy four-lane street surrounded by apartments. the man driving by saw the woman being kidnapped. he ran over and fought the attacker off. chris burns calls that man a hero. >> the two people kind of wiping their eyes, wiping their whole face, trying to get the pepper spray off.

>> the victim did not know her attacker. >> we don't know why she is targeted, which is really disturbing. this is just a random attack on the female for reasons that are not clear. >> that's really unnerving. it's kind of scary to know that that's happening, especially in broad daylight. >> police are searching for a silver nissan sedan with tinted windows and silver spoked wheels. in san leandro, elisa harrington, abc 7 news. today a federal judge dropped all charges against a man about to be retried for the high profile murder of a washington intern. modesto native chandra levy was reported missing in 2001 and then found dead a year later. prosecutors say tonight they can no longer prove a case against the suspect, ingmar guandique. a jury convicted him of killing levy, but last year he was granted a new trial. levy's mother would not comment about the case, but she did call for an end to violence. >> just like a million other women that don't have their children, either boys or girls

we have breaking news in san jose right now. police are searching for a gunman in a homicide. it happened just after 10:00 tonight at willow and sherman streets. just moments ago, more officers and a k-9 unit arrived. they have cordoned off a wider area. investigators are also talking with witnesses, of course. stay with abc 7 news for any breaking updates, and follow us on twitter at abc 7 news bay area. a bulldozer operator who was killed while helping fight a wildfire in monterey county has been identified. 35-year-old robert reagan of fresno county was on a bulldozer when it rolled down a canyon, crushing him beneath it. reagan was a contractor hired to build containment lines.

abc 7 news was in carmel tonight as those gathered for a community meeting honored reagan with a moment of silence. at the meeting, state fire officials said now that fewer people are impacted by the fire, they will close an evacuation center at carmel middle school. the fire has burned nearly 30,000 acres since it began last friday. right now it's just 15% contained. the fire has destroyed 41 homes. and tonight it's threatening 2000 more. this is new video showing the burned and melted remains of a home. one man who was a -- who has a property in the fire zone says he feels for those who have lost everything. >> the people who lost their houses, i just feel for them so badly. they -- you know, they had their whole life invested in that property. and it's gone in a heart beat. >> earlier this evening fema offered a grant to help state and local agencies recover costs spent on the response. >> in the south bay firefighters rescued a driver who got pinned

underneath his fan. the san jose fire department tweeted this. this afternoon the delivery van crashed and ended up on its side, sending the driver out of the window. his legs were pinned underneath the vehicle. the rescue team was able to lift the van off the man and take him to the hospital for treatment. new at 11:00, a big night for soccer fans in san jose. the mls all stars faced off against one of the top teams from england. >> arsenal beat the all-stars 2-1. but as abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian found out, fans from both sides were excited to see their favorite players. >> tonight's all-star game was filled with highs and lows with mls all star fans in blue and arsenal fans in red, the stadium overflowed with color and plenty of cuteness. >> my father grew up in north london, supporting them his whole life. so he raised me doing the same.

sandhya patel is here is what is coming as we head into the weekend. >> some relief. temperatures will be dropping out of the triple-digits. but not immediately. let me sow you a time lapse from our sutro tower camera. san francisco this afternoon, evening, you can see that fog layer was just hovering. san francisco disappeared in the fog. at least this part of the city. up above, notice the layers of smoke. our air quality continues to suffer. and here is a picture sent to me via twitter by one of my followers from soledad, which actually shows how smoky the skies are near the soberanes fire. the heat doesn't help our air quality either. we had the triple-digits around antioch, livermore, concord. along the coastline, temperatures were in the 60s. so quite comfortable today. we're going to lose a few degrees as we head into tomorrow. poor air quality for the inland east bay tomorrow. santa clara moderate air quality. we are looking at another spare the air alert. but the air quality will gradually improve in all areas as we head into the weekend. live doppler hd showing you the

fog near the beaches. visibility is dropping. right now it's about a mile in half moon bay. you will need to be careful for the commute. you might want to allow a little extra time because your commute may take a little longer. temperatures right now, you're in the 50s along the coastline. and around parts of the bay. but inland areas still warm in the 70s. a live look from our south beach camera. this is giving me a pretty good indication that we're in for cooler days. the fog layer has expanded towards the bay and towards the ballpark. it has been primarily near the coast in the last few nights. foggy areas for the morning commute. one more day of triple-digits inland, and cooler days are expected right on through the weekend. you know the temperatures dropped a little bit today. didn't really feel like it inland, but hang in there. it's coming, the cooldown. temperatures first thing in the morning. starting out in the 50s, except well inland where it will be clear and mild inland. along the coastline and around the bay, the fog will start off your morning. it's going to be dense in spots at 5:00 a.m. commute time, if you take the ferry across the bay, it's going to be a murky right at 8:00 a.m., still foggy. and don't be surprised if you

run into a little mist and drizzle. hazy skies in the east bay and the south bay due to the smoke, and also the heat. and then the sun will be shining in the north bay. here is a look at the afternoon. pretty much our microclimate showing up this time around due to the smoke as well. highs in the south bay 92 in los gatos. 87 san jose. 96 in morgan hill. 82 sunnyvale. hazy here. on the peninsula 77 in san mateo. low 80s redwood city. los altos. 59 in pacifica. daly city, you're used to that in the summer time. north bay, 80 in san rafael. 81 in vallejo. upper 80s napa, santa rosa. you really have to get up towards ukiah to get the triple-digits. east bay 75 in oakland. 74 berkeley. 84 castro valley. inland a couple of 100s, but not as many as in days past. 96 concord. 98 in pittsburg. with unhundred in livermore. 97 in pleasanton. a look at the gilroy garlic festival, it's going to be
