planet from climate change and our communities from gun violence. she's a woman driven by compassion, faith, by a fierce sense of justice, and a heart full of love. >> reporter: and the question is will -- rather, undecided voters feel that love. even vice president joe biden said what hillary clinton needed to do was show america her heart. i was trying to count how many times the daughter chelsea clinton mentioned that word. she gave us a side of the presidential nominee we've never seen before. >> it was interesting to see how similar it was in goals, at least, to ivanka trump's speech. they both tried to make their parent seem like a human and seem like -- show their softer side and talk about parental sides. how was this speech received? >> it's funny you bring up ivanka. of course, it's similar because they have the same role. half the people i've been seeing on twitter responding saying chelsea did better. the other saying ivanka was more

he didn't look very happy. she did give him that shout out, but there were protests during her speech. tell us more. >> reporter: yeah, the bernie sanders supporters last night were all wearing yellow shirts. they actually glowed in the dark as well. even when the lights were dim, you knew where they were. there were reports there were going to be walkouts and loud protests. there were a couple of disruptions. the democratic party was prepared. there were immediate chants of usa, flags were waving. if you were listening at home, you probably didn't hear the original disturbances. >> given that dynamic in the arena, do you think she accomplished her mission, and how did her reception compare to donald trump's? >> reporter: i think this was a good speech for hillary clinton. there was a lot of criticism of her on the campaign trail, that she isn't as loose as president obama or bill clinton, but this

was an effective speech for her. one key thing that struck me. she emphasized trust and temperament. her message was you can trust me because i can make the tough decisions and that donald trump does not have the temperament america needs in a crisis. those are critical parts of her campaign message over the next three months. >> and this morning even at this early hour, one of the top two trends of the u.s., one of the parents of a fallen muslim soldier who spoke to the crowd in a gripping way. the crowd reaction there? >> reporter: this was an incredible moment. we knew it was on the schedule but took a lot of us by surprise last night, speaking about their fallen soldier son, and then the key moment, though, calling out donald trump, asking him if he's ever read the constitution, and then pulling it out, holding up a paper small copy of the

constitution say, "you can read mine." that's getting a lot of buzz today. >> a lot of elements getting a lot of buzz. and 101 more days to go. many more events, i'm sure. karen travers for us in philadelphia. karen, thank you so much. >> reporter: thank you. and they had barely unleashed the balloons on the floor when donald trump unleashed a series of tweets, including one accusing clinton of being owned by wall street. during a campaign stop in iowa, he blasted nearly everyone who spoke about him at the democratic national convention, taking aim at one person he refused to name. >> they're really saying bad things about me. i'm going to hit him so hard -- i was going to hit one guy in particular, a very little guy. i was going to hit this guy so hard his head would spin. he wouldn't know what the hell happened. >> the speculation is that trump was referring to michael bloomberg. the trump campaign also spent much of the day walking back his call for russia to hack and release hillary clinton's e-mails. saying he was being sarcastic. and north carolina's gop is

apologizing to tim kaine. in a tweet the state's republican party said it was shameful for kaine to wear what it thought of a lapel pin of a flag. it's a blue star tribute. it's worn by family of blue star men and women. you might remember his son is deployed with the marines. to breaking news right now from the west coast. two san diego police officers have been shot. it's sparked a massive search for the suspect or suspects in the southeast section of the city located about a mile from a naval base there in san diego. both officers have been taken to the hospital. their conditions are not known at this time. we're going to have more as the details come in about that shooting there in san diego. the u.s. military is investigating reports that civilians were killed in a coalition air strike in northern syria. that strike was in a city that was a hub for isis. meantime, the u.s. has confirmed that between last july and this past

april, 14 civilians died in u.s. air strikes in syria and iraq. also north korea says the u.s. has effectively declared war by putting kim jong-un on the list of sanctioned individuals. it's also warning that a showdown could erupt if the u.s. and south korea hold annual joint military exercises as planned next month. in florida, the state's largest supplier of blood is making change over fears about the zika virus. the company will beginning testing all blood collections for the virus. this comes when the fda announced it was suspending blood donations in miami-dade and broward counties. it comes after four cases of so-called home-grown cases were zika have been found in the state. american airlines took a quick action after a scare on one of the flights. passengers saw flames shooting out of an engine after takeoff from dallas-ft. worth international. the pilot turned the plane around.

the problem was the engine was backfiring. the 130 passengers spent the night in a hotel and made it to seattle yesterday safely. american has changed out that engine. there's another traveler with many stories to tell, but i don't think we're going to get him to start talking to us. >> he won't be able to say a word about it. for a long time he sat outside bev york's house. this was in british columbia, canada. >> there he is. >> last december he disappeared. he was back with a story. it shows the gnome on his travels to mexico. >> he was dubbed leopold. he had at least one margarita and made it to the grand canyon. >> he is back in place. leaning against the sign post. maybe he's still feeling the effects of the margarita. >> and his rightful owners have no idea who took him and how he went to all these places. >> the only clue is the picture of him next to the sleeping boy. >> she said she doesn't recognize the boy. >> it's not the first time we've had these apb out for gnomes

after visiting the young man in the hospital. >> reporter: the man shot by police on a florida street as he tried to help a young man with autism speaking out for the first time since leaving the hospital. >> there was nothing else i could have done. i believe i did everything the right way. >> reporter: behavioral therapist charles kinsey seen in this video pleading with police. moments later, one officer shooting kinsey in the leg, claiming he was actually aiming for 26-year-old, the patient, thinking he had a gun. rios sent to the hospital distraught by the whole encounter. >> when i heard he was in the hospital, it saddened me. >> reporter: as for himself, he says he's healed physically but not mentally. reuniting with rios. >> when he seen me, he jumped and came right to me. i really wanted to cry. >> reporter: we've learned the attorney for rios called on the department of justice to investigate this shooting.

this morning on "world news now," hillary clinton makes history, officially accepting the nomination for president. the well-known candidate reintroduced herself to america and of course took hits at donald trump. we're live in philadelphia with the latest reactions from the final night of the dnc. dutiful daughters you might call them. first ivanka, then chelsea in the spotlight. one week apart making the most important speeches of their lives. their roles in the bruising campaign to come. new this half hour, colorado firefighters make an attempted rescue, captivating social media. it had nothing to do with fire. >> it was a horse. the dramatic moments playing out with the hashtag #savecupcake trending worldwide. and three cast members

we started in the law library 45 years ago, it is still going strong. you know that conversation has lasted through good times that filled us with joy and hard times that tested us. [ chants ] if you believe the minimum wage should be a living wage and no one working full-time should have to raise their children in poverty, join us. if you believe that every man, woman, and child in america has the right to affordable health care, join us. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: her speech full of conviction, emphasizing unity as the key to america's strength. but also focusing on the issues in a speech that lasted nearly an hour. >> we have to heal the divides in our country.

not just on guns but on race, immigration, and more. >> reporter: the balloons fall. spirits soar. this is the hopeful side of history. the hard and likely ugly home stretch begins in the morning. ♪ and like donald trump, clinton was introduced by her daughter. >> but it looks like that's pretty much where the similarities ended. for more on clinton's big night, we'll turn to karen travers in philadelphia. karen, good morning. we've now seen both hillary clinton and donald trump do their big speeches, and many of the pundits are weighing in on the key differences between the two of them this morning. >> reporter: i think the one big thing is specifics. last night you heard hillary clinton start citing everyday americans that she has met over her career who inspired her, who moved her in some way, and she then acted because of them. very detailed. giving their names.

giving their story. all part of building her resume and showing her experience. republicans last week say donald trump didn't offer anything like that. if he talked about jobs, he didn't say who he created one for. if he talked about businesses, he didn't say who he helped. republican consultants and voters, that's what we were hearing. they wanted to hear more from donald trump. i think the clinton campaign, who we know were writing the speech up until last night, tweaking things, perhaps taking that to hart and offering as many specifics as possible. karen, the goal was unity, but there was a moment during general allen's speech where it sounded like there were dueling chants coming from the floor. what happened there? >> reporter: that was pretty incredible. general allen, who was the commander of u.s. forces in afghanistan, giving a very strong endorsement for hillary clinton and her national security credentia credentials. and while he was speaking, some of the bernie sanders supporters, mostly focused in the california section, chanting

"no more wars" or "end the wars." and quickly the crowd around them drowning those protesters out with chants of usa. general allen even getting in on that. just a striking scene to see at a democratic event like that. it's certainly we've seen more over the years at republican events with anti-war protesters. >> and, karen, as they are popping many of the remaining balloons behind you, obviously somebody visited party city before the convention. what's next for the campaign? i know clinton and tim kaine, are they planning on going out together or what are they doing? >> reporter: they didn't have to stick around and pop the probably billion balloons on the convention floor right now. they're going to hit the campaign trail today in philadelphia, holding a rally, and then it's off on a three-day bus tour. they'll make stops in pennsylvania in the next day and a half and then into ohio. there is nothing more official of kicking off the general election season than a good old bus tour through ohio and pennsylvania.

it's not going to be the last time the candidates make the stops. this just basically signals this is it. this is time. it's game on. 101 days until election day. we've got a lot of campaigning to go. >> yeah. it's the longest general election season since 1960. karen travers live in philadelphia this morning. thank you. and they'll be popping the balloons until election day, probably in philadelphia. okay. so donald trump didn't waste much time tweeting no one has worse judgment than hillary clinton. it comes after a day of questioning about his judgment for calling an russia to hack and publish hillary clinton's private e-mails. he insists he was being sarcastic. he says it's unsafe for hillary clinton to get national security briefings. democrats argue he's the one who shouldn't have access to classified information. the white house is ending that debate, now saying both candidates will receive those briefings which could begin as early as next week.

>> turning now to the out of control wildfire raging in northern california, the fire near big sur has already destroyed about three dozen homes and threatens 2,000 more. officials estimate it will take until the end of august to extinguish the blaze which has already burned 42 squire miles. this new jersey teenager got the shock of a lifetime. quite literally. lightning knocked the 16-year-old right off his feet. he was recording the storm over bradley beach on the jersey shore when the bolt hit the ground right next to him. he had to go to the er. he escaped without a scratch. so anyone who saw the hash tag that was trending yesterday, #savecupca #savecupcake, don't worry. georgetown cupcake will be open later. >> that's not what it was about. everyone need to know cupcake is fine. cupcake, this one, a

women. >> he will fight for equal pay for equal work. and i will fight for this, too, right alongside of him. >> reporter: chelsea shining a light on a nurturing, gentler side of her mother. >> i've seen her promising to do everything she could to help. she always feels like there isn't a moment to lose. because she knows that for that mother, for that family, there isn't. >> reporter: not long ago trump and clinton would be names you would hear together. chelsea opening up about their rip on -- their relationship on "e.t." >> we talk about everything. i'm so grateful she's my friend. i think she's a great woman. >> reporter: it's uncanny that they share such a unique place in history and so many similarities. both 30-somethings work for the family business. both live in multimillion dollar apartments in new york and were pregnant at the same time. both with experiences well beyond their years.

but over the past year, it's been about making a clear distinction. chelsea had been campaigning hard for her mom prior to the birth of her son in june. it's expected she'll continue to be involved leading up to november. >> well, not only are chelsea and ivanka friends, their husbands know each other and introduced them. how does that work out now? >> this is the thing. we don't know what goes on in the lives of close people. >> has to be complicated. >> close and rich people. >> close and very, very wealthy. >> kendis is trying to know hard to know what goes on in their lives. >> there has been talk that the campaigns asked them nicely to kind of avoid interacting with each other until november which would make sense. they have been sparring a little more on social media. chelsea clinton criticizing ivanka's statement that her father was fighting for women to have equal work, equal pay, saying your father has never mentioned this, but he has a job
