good afternoon, and thank you for joining us today. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. larry beil has the day off. it is happening in san francisco where police have made an arrest in a high profile quadruple murder. >> police arrested lee mar lee. he was in prison for a charge in at water. he faces four counts of murder. >> it happened last year, four men were double parked in a stolen car when more than one gunman fired several shots into the car. police have identified other suspects but don't have enough evidence yet to arrest them. >> since that crime occurred, the officers and inspectors have been working feverishly to find the suspects involved in this

case. >> three of the victims have been identified as gang members but police have not said the shooting was gang related. coming up at 5:00, leen mel mel will have reaction from the mother of one of the victims. a close call in san leandro. police are looking for this man, that tried to kidnap a woman in broad daylight. >> and these images just released today. you could see his silver niece ran sentra and the man wearing black clothing. >> the woman was able to get free thanks to a man nearby. >> amy hollyfield has the story. >> she can't even protect herself. >> reporter: he ran over to help when he saw the 23-year-old woman being placed and dragged by her ankles toward her attacker's car. >> i just ran and i got them loose and i made sure she was free and okay and then i started going at it with the guy and he started macing me. just a total coward. >> reporter: it happened on

washington and san leandro at 7:45 in the morning he was going to work. this is asketch of the attacker. a black man with goatee and glasses about 5'10". >> if you had to judge based on looks, not a bad-looking -- not a bad dude. >> he was trying to fight and protect himself. >> i was trying to avoid the mace if i started to lose my vision, that is two people down so i had to make sure, i stay coherent and have his attention on me. >> reporter: the man broke free and got away but the woman is safe. listen to police talk about what could have happened. >> felt her feet enter the car. so it was that close to him getting her into the car and leaving and i truly think that if you are this brazen to have that type of an attack in broad daylight in public that this would have ended in tragedy. >> she was in a lot of shock. it was -- just seeing that kind

of terror in her face was just -- she shouldn't have had to have gone through that or anybody for that matter. >> reporter: police say she did not know the attacker. they are just talking this a brazen, random attack. in san leandro, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. san jose police are looking for a suspect in a fatal shooting last night. it happened a little after 10:00 at willow and sherman streets, about a mile from happy hollow zoo. police are not saying much but witnesses told one officer that the shooting appeared to take place after a robbery. they say the victim chased after the robber who then turned and shop him. the victim has not been identified. reports say that suspended raider aldon smith is back in rehab. espn said it is unclear what he is seeking treatment for but it comes four days after video surfaces on a periscope account linked to smith that showed a man talking with a woman about a

hand-rolled cigarette. the nfl is investigating. he is serving a year-long suspension for violating the lug substance abuse policy. the 26-year-old was arrested three times on suspension of drunk driving during his time with the 49ers. at least two people have died after a life light medical plane bound for oakland earl cy this morning cratched in hum -- crashed in humboldt county. they found two bodies north of mckinleyville. the sheriff's office said the pilot declared an imagine around 1:00 a.m. because of smoke in the cockpit and then they lost contact. the soberanes fire in monterey county has grown larger than the city of san francisco. cal fire released this time lapse showing the fire's movement since it started a week ago. it has now burned more than 49 square miles. 2,000 homes are threatened and more than 40 homes have been destroyed. the fire is just 15% contained. firefighters warn it could continue burning for another

month. and take a look at this view of the soberanes fire from space. nasa released this today. you could see the smoke heading north west from the fire. the rest of the white you see on the left is fog that is off the coast. let's turn to our weather as we hit the weekend. here is a live look from the east bay hills camera. >> and yes. and tonight is friday. spencer christian is here with the accuweather update. >> okay. my mic just fell down. can you hear me now. i was running around and it fell off my lapel. sunny skyp sunny skies across the area. warm inland. and you could say hot. a few trilds. 100 so far at livermore and 102 at lake fort and 106 at ukiah and many upper 90s inland valleys of the east bay. only 61 the high at half moon bay and 63 here in san francisco. this is the view from our sutro tower camera over san francisco. it is currently 62 here in the city.

zero percent containment and flames have destroyed one structure already. in santa clara, crews could extinguish this garage fire behind a home on washington street near bellamy shortly before 5:00 this morning. no one was hurt. it took crews 15 minutes to get it under control. to politics. hillary clinton is on the road, one day after accepting the nomination for president. >> trump is also back on the campaign trail. kenneth molten has the details from philadelphia. >> reporter: for the first time since accepting the nomination, hillary clinton and tim kaine rallied here at temple university, celebrating the convention and teamed up to attack donald trump. riding the post convention wave of support and spouses, including bill clinton by their sides in philadelphia. >> what better place to kick off this campaign than right here in philadelphia where it all started 240 years ago. >> reporter: the democratic

through pennsylvania and ohio, two battleground states for the white house. abc news, philadelphia. with the convention wrapped up now, hillary clinton and donald trump are getting ready to square off face-to-face. the first presidential debate is set for september 26th at hofstra university on long island and followed by two more in st. louis and las vegas. an expansion is under way in palo alto. >> and they have praised efforts to modernize the v.a. but we are learning some details about what is called excessive spending, especially on art work like this. chris nguyen has more. >> abc news has obtained a new report by a government watch dog group called open the books which founded between 2014, the v.a. spent $20 million on art work. of the money 6.3 was allocated to the palo alto campus. upsetting critics who say this never should have happened as veterans experienced long waits for treatment.

in a statement to abc news, a v.a. spokesperson said while we must be stewards of taxpayer dollars we know that providing comprehensive health care for patients going beyond offering the most advanced medical treatment. eddie supports the art saying it creates a healing environment for patients. >> a hospital with art, is a welcoming environment, as opposed to some of these military hospitals that don't have any art. it is cold and very distant. >> reporter: but one veteran we spoke with off camera sid the money should be reallocated toward staffing and services rather than pricey art. this video obtained by abc news showed a rock in the mental health courtyard on the palo alto campus and that cost taxpayer $400,000 and they spent almost $300,000 installing this morse code display on the side of a parking garage to honor

keep calm, you internet's on. this weekend, there will be no b.a.r.t. service between the glenn park station andn san francisco and daly city. the agency is shutting things down to begin track improvements to make things quieter for riders and people who live nearby. eric thomas is live with the details. hi, eric. >> reporter: the close you are will start at 1:00 saturday morning or a little less than 9 hours from now. it is the first step on the road to what everyone hopes will be a quieter, smoother ride. >> the park is one of our favorite park and i've been coming here since i was a baby,

so -- >> reporter: it is a sure conversation killer. a section of b.a.r.t. track south of the balboa park station generates an ear-splitting noise. >> there is 2,000 feet of rail that is jointed and makes a clicketty clank sound over it. >> and the balboa curve where the wheels generate a screeching noise. we measured the sound inside of the train and it peaked at 100 decibels or about the noise level of a busy factory floor with no ear protection. >> i thought it was pretty loud, definitely noise pollution, i guess. >> i wish i had some earplugs or something, i could use. >> and neighbors suffer too, under the track at nearby cuyahoga park, the sound meter peaked at 99.9, the equivalence of an electric drill and parents deal with it. >> i pause conversations to wait

is now $2. potentially big trouble for facebook. the irs is investigating the social media giant for the way it moved assets to its irish subsidiary to avoid higher taxes. according to a filing with the securities and exchange commission they could face a tax penalty of up to $5 billion plus interest and they say they disagree with the irs position andill challenge the notice. a new lending option for silicon valley workers is raising concern. bloomberg reports that some bay area lenders are offering zero down mortgage to attract wealthy lernds. two have headquarters in the branches of facebook and twitter. the ceo blasted this idea saying, quote, given what we went through in 2008, zero down financing is suicidal for our country. there is an investigation into whether cameras and radar contributed to a deadly accident

involving a model s tesla. the car hit the under side of a tractor-trailer. either the cameras and radar failed to spot it or it did see the rig and thought the radar was false. tesla maintained the auto pilot mode is safe. if the wind is right, you might be able to smell it before you get there. the 38th annual gilroy garlic festival is underway. mr. garlic got things started when he passed the torch to the chefs in gourmet alley. this is the looft time he will -- the last time he will have the honor. he is passing his torch to the son, but he held it for the last 29 years. >> i got a letter from my son and he said i want to take your place and so i couldn't say no. >> it means a lot that he cared enough to say i'm going to take your place. so it was nice. >> the festival runs through sunday. 10:00 until 7:00 at christmas hill park in gilroy. >> should be a good time.

but how toasty will it be. >> that is a question. it is warm in gilroy. spencer christian is here with the forecast. well it is going to be less toasty into the weekend than it has been the last few days. the triple-digit weather is going away. a live look at lar doppler 7 hd and a few locations have hit triple-digits in the bay area and the outbreak of summer afternoon thunderstorms over in the sierra. mainly in the eastern slopes. so back to the bay area. this is at the golden gate bridge with fog lowering and thickening. these are the forecast features. we'll see fog overnight near the coast and bay. cooler days lie ahead this weekend and we'll have a seasonal pattern through next week. now overnight, we'll see low temperatures mainly in the upper 50 toss low 60s in the inland east bay which is the mildest region of the bay area. mid to upper 50s around the bay and low 50s in the north bay valleys and along the coastline. here is the forecast animation at 11:00 tonight the fog filling in and pushing over the bay and locally inland. so the day will begin with some

lingering fog over the bay but it will pull back to the coastline during the afternoon hours giving us a day much like today only cooler inland under sunny skies tomorrow. we'll see high temperatures arising only into the 90s and then low to mid-90s in the warmest spots. we'll see mainly 70s up to about 80 around the bay. and maybe up to about 60 on the coast. now, looking ahead, air quality is improving. today was a spare the air day as you know but tomorrow will not be. we'll have good air quality in the north bay and including the central part of the bay area and along the coast. and moderate air quality over the remainder of the bay area. that is a good change for us. sunday even cooler than tomorrow with highs in the upper 80s. maybe a few low 90s. and speaking of sunday, sunday is san francisco marathon sunday. the day will begin sort of foggy and cool which is the weather that most marathoners like and even as the day gets sunnier, by midday, it is realively pleasant

america adventure into space turns 58 today. eisenhower signed for nasa on this date in 1958, a direct response to the soviet space program which had launched the year before. since then they have been responsible for most u.s. space exploration efforts. it is not space, but a sky diver planning a leap of faith. he is planning to jump from 25,000 feet without a parachute hoping to land in a net. caina wit worth sat down with him before tomorrow's big jump to find out why. >> reporter: he is the daredevil family man with over 18,000 jumps to his name. >> i was born to fly. >> reporter: but the student luke aikens is taking on tomorrow is enough to make a seasoned thrill-seeker cringe. >> you will not have a parachute or a wing suit, just this.

here are the headlines at 4:30. police in san leandro released this picture of a man trying to kidnap a woman as she was walking to work. they released a picture of the nissan sentra he was driving. it happened yesterday morning on washington avenue. a good samaritan saw the suspect pepper spraying the woman and stepped in and stopped the attack and helped the woman get way. on abc 7 news, a man waiting in a hospital bed for justice. wayne freedman talks with the family of a man who spent 18

years in prison for a crime he did not commit. at 6:00, why he can't get the million dollars the state owes him. hillary clinton is back on the campaign trail after becoming the first woman to accept a first major party nomination for president. what she told supporters today and donald trump's response at his own rally. and developing news on the zika virus. the mosquito-borne disease is spreading in the u.s. four people in miami have caught the virus through mosquito bites. marcy gonzalez is on the story. >> reporter: health officials in south florida spraying neighborhoods and warning residents after the announcement zika-transmitting mosquitos are now likely in the continental u.s. the governor rick scott confirming four people were infected with the virus within a one square mile area north of downtown miami. >> this means florida has become the first state in our nation to have local transmission of the zika virus. >> reporter: across 46 states,

nearly 1700 men and women have been treated for zika. but until now, all of those cases were linked to travel outside of the u.s., or sex with someone who is infected. three men and one woman who contracted the virus in florida are said to have minor symptoms but their cases raising concerns, especially for pregnant women as the disease is linked to severe developmental issues in babies. the florida department of health aggressively testing people in the affected area making sure there are no other cases. as officials urge floridians to protect themselves from mosquito bites. >> get rid of all water around your house and cover yourself up when you are outside. use repellent, take this seriously. we could stop if we are active. >> and the white house is calling on congress to approve more federal funding for what is now being called a public health emergency. marcy gonzalez, abc news, new york. now coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00, the impact the zika virus is having on travel here in the united states.

we're learning the identity of the san diego police officer shot and killed during a traffic stop on thursday night. jonathan deguzman was a 16 year veteran who was married with two children. a second officer who was shot, a nine year department veteran wade irwin is expected to survive. >> you can't begin to put in words the emotions and feelings that surround an event like this. this is one of the most difficult and heart-wrenching situations for police officers to go through. >> at this point in the investigation, police aren't calling the shooting an ambush. the suspect was shot and taken into custody. the incident comes as officers across the country are on high alert after the killing of officers -- killings of officers in dallas and baton rouge, louisiana, this month. a minnesota prosecutor said he will not step aside for a special prosecutor investigating the police killing of a black motorist. attorney john choi said today he was elected to uphold the law

and intends to do so into the investigation of the july 6th death of philando castile but however he said he will incorporate a special prosecutor to enhance trust in the results. he was killed by an officer during a traffic stop. video of the immediate aftermath was streamed live on facebook by castile's girlfriend. three and a half years after the massacre at sandy hook, the new school is ready to open. they unveiled the futuristic and secure building to the media. all windows are bulletproof and visitors have to pass through a driveway great to get in. they decided to demolish the old building, a reminder of the tragedy there. the rampage in 2012 left 20 children and six staff members dead. pope francis made a historic visit today to auschwitz birkenau, the concentration camp in poland. he walked under the sign that said work makes you free.

he paid tribute to the mar than 1 million people, mostly jews who lost their lives there in the holocaust. he is the third pope francis to visit following pope benedict and john paul ii in 1979. and new developments in the russia olympics doping scandal. fans greed them as they arrived in rio today as the international weight lifting federation banned the russian federation and all of the weightlifters from the rio games. the iwf said the multiple cases of doping have seriously damaged the integrity of the sport. the eight spots have been offered to other countries. >> there are new criminal charges today in the flint, michigan water crisis. prosecutors are charging six current or former state employees with misconduct and other crimes. michigan attorney general said the workers attempted to cover up or down play or hide information. they join three other public officials previously charged after improperly treated water from the flint river was sent

michael, mark m. from antioch e-mailed, i drink sugar free soda so why do i still have to pay a sugar tax. this doesn't make sense to me. >> you shouldn't have to pay. if you are drinking a diet that doesn't have added sugar and it doesn't apply to the tax. it is only in berkeley right now. the bottom line is if you have added sugar, mainly a soda, it could be like a sugary coffee drinks or even juice where they add sugar which they do, then you pay penny an ounce. and diet, you shouldn't pay it and not outside of berkeley. coming up in november in san francisco, oakland and albany are voting on their own diet soda -- or nondiet soda tax. we'll wait to see if we're paying there. >> christy asked on twitter, why there so much new building when we have a water shortage. >> it seems crazy, doesn't it. the laws are pretty clear on this. the state of california said if you have 500 units or more than
