live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. developing now at 11:00, from the air and on the ground fire crews are racing to get control of a raging wildfire in napa county. tonight more than 1700 acres are burning and evacuations are in place and there is zero containment. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. the fire started about 4:30 this afternoon and it is burning near the napa and yolo county line near the montecello dam. >> we have live team coverage and we first go to cornell bernard with the story. cornell? >> reporter: ama and dan, 500 firefighters are battling this monster fire that is still out of control. take a look. road blocks are in place along highway 128. evacuations are underway, but not everyone is leaving

tonight. this fire exploded in size in just a matter of hours. cal fire is attacking the blaze from all sides with the water drops. we were there as flames jumped this ridge moving toward the can yep creek resort -- the canyon creek resort in winters. these campers are told to evacuate, but some defy the order choosing to stay. >> we'll see. they might get it contained or might not. >> reporter: the sweeney family is getting out, cutting their summer vacation short by a week. >> i would rather go now than wait until it is a mad house. >> this time when i saw the smoke i was like, no, i don't want to stay. let's go. >> reporter: the fire ravaged hills along highway 128 burning everything in its path. sky 7hd captured the scope and the size of the fire. modified dc10's dropping flame retardant from above and more help is needed. >> the drought is not helping and everything is tinder dry.

>> the fires have raged through here before. on the left, the montecello fire. fireworks were blamed for the cause. on the right, the 2015 rag fire that burned more than 8,000 acres. >> we have been here before and we were evacuated a year ago at the same time. >> reporter: campers and localsy -- locals know the drill. be ready to leave when the fare gets this close. >> we were just told that cal fire has opened an evacuation center in downtown winters at the public safety center. cal fire is putting out a call for more fire resources. they say the firefight is just beginning. cornell better -- cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> 3 weather is a key factor. we want to continue our coverage with sandhya patel on live doppler 7hd. >> yes, dan. what is happening is the temperature has been dropping and the relative humidity has been rising since this afternoon when the fire started. 75 degrees right now and 39%

relative humidity. luckily for the crews there, the wind has not been a real factor. right now it is about a mile and an hour. live doppler 7hd was picking up the plume of smoke near the fire on our radar here earlier today. as you look at the wind trend we are expecting it to remain light wind as far as the overnight hours. but notice tomorrow evening winds are expected to pick up 17 miles april hour and that could be a battle for the crews out there. dan? >> sandhya, thanks very much. the fire in big sur started as an unattended campfire. it was burning off the main trails and firefighters now have the fire 25% contained. so there has been good progress. the fire has burned more than 44,000 acres so far. now stay on top of the wildfires burning around the bay area with the abc7 news app. download it for free and remember to enable the push alert so we can give you updates immediately as they happen.

new at 11:00, a pokemon go player is recovering after being stabbed in the face. it happened while playing in downtown san jose in broad daylight. we want to warn you that some of the images may be disturbing. here is lisa amin gulezian. >> this is chris moments after being stabbed in the face and this is chris today. his chin and other wounds are still healing six days after the attack in downtown san jose he was hiding in this direction and holding his phone like this and heading toward these two poke stops. when he got here he said a woman suddenly started yelling at him from that direction and a man jumped on him from over there. they accused him of recording them on his phone. >> then they tried to steal his backpack. >> he had a knife so he actually slashed my chin across and then he grabbed me by the back of the head and then hit me in the chest and the back. >> the suspect got away and chris had no idea he was hurt

this badly. he stumbled to his girlfriend's office nearby. she did not want to show her face on camera. >> i couldn't believe it. i wanted it to be a joke, honestly. it was really scary. >> chris thinks part of the reason he was targeted may have been because he wasn't paying attention. lots of people don't while playing pokemon go. >> i hospital have to pay attention to everything all the time. it shouldn't be the world we live in. >> police tell us they have no suspects. in san jose, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> as you may have heard, five people are dead after a deadly bus crash in merced county. the bus split apart around a sign pole on highway 99. the bus was headed from mexico to washington. it was running late for a driver change in livingston when it lost control. >> i woke up and i was lying on the floor. i think it crashed into a post. >> jennifer rivera was one of 18 people injured, but alive

after the crash. >> the bus was split open and that's how i got out. my arm was scratched and it hurt a lot. >> survivors describe horror on the bus. people were broken and crying. >> injuries were mainly to the lower extremities and they ranged anywhere from amputation to severe fractures. >> this man headed to the pasco washington bus station after his mother didn't call him back and after several hours he heard from her. >> i was in shock from seeing the dead bodies and having a dead guy on me. >> federal regulators gave the bus company a satisfactory rating. they looked into the bus driver's records and found in february of 2015 he operated a vehicle on a suspended license. it has been reinstated. vasquez's injuries are so great though he hasn't been able to tell investigators what happened. >> he was very careful because he wanted to come home and see us. >> vasquez recently lost his wife of 25 years to cancer and

family members say they hope not to lose him too. >> tonight six people are in critical condition and were upgraded to serious or fair con dismghts the ntsb is sending a nine-member team to investigate how this crash happened. an oakland man is in jail without bail charged in the attempted murder of a police officer. he is accused of shooting at the police sergeant. moss' firearm malfunctioned that may have saved the officer's life. police think he may have been inspired by the anti-pleasant meants. clark was trapped following an unrelated crash when the shots were fired. she wasn't hurt. tonight is national night out, and this is a night when police officers and the communities they serve and patrol get to know each other better and one hopes build trust. >> this year the night will take on extra importance in light of the police shootings across the nation. katie has our story from san

francisco. >> national night out in the bay view district. a healing circle and a positive attitude. >> at the end of the day what we want is our children to come home safe, and we want the officer to go home safe to their families as well. i think we are on the path of that. >> he acknowledged a noticible gap between law enforcement and some communities. but he said this about san francisco. >> i think in san francisco we have enjoyed a good partnership with the communities we police and contrary to what is happening nationally, we still enjoy the partnerships and we strengthened them in a lot of neighborhoods and the bay view is definitely one of them. >> mayor ed leigh made an appearance and he said national night out is important as are the changes being made to the san francisco police department. >> we are putting body cameras on people and we have more examples of how the safety of of life should be the primary policy. >> families were eager to spend time with their officer.

the prosecutors asked for the fine to be reduced to $six million. they gave no explanation. it comes as part of the criminal trial of pg&e. a blast killed eight people. the jury is now deliberating the case. >> the napa valley wine train hit an suv this afternoon in saint helena and was captured on video. take a look at the top of your screen. a security camera mounted nearby captured the suv after it ran a stop sign and came to a stop on the tracks. the train plowed into the suv as you can see. the impact is spinning the vehicle 90 degrees and pushing it off the street. only one person was in the car. glad to say no one was hurt. >> very fortunate. it is time to check on our weather. >> sandhya patel has the forecast. >> i do have a spectacular sunset, but it comes at a price. we have two fires burning as you know. one up around the napa and yolo county border and the

other one around big sur. there is the smoky sunset. you can see the redish-hues. live doppler 7hd shows you the fog. it is near the coast and it is starting to push in a little toward the bay. the visibility has been fluctuating and it is four miles right now due to the fog. earlier it was lower than three-quarters of a mile. be prepared for the fluctuating visibility. from the sfo cool raw you are seeing the marine layer. the temperatures are midto upper 50s. san francisco to oakland and 63 in mountain view and a mild 66. half moon bay has dropped down to 54 degrees. here is a live look from the emeryville camera and you are also looking at a preview of the morning commute with the fog layer along the coastline. 54 in santa rosa and napa upper 50ss and still warm in livermore. you are at 70 degrees. a live look from our east bay hills camera.

this is the shot that captures what your morning looks like. it is barely visible because of the fog. look out for the areas of dense fog. sunny and mild to warm tomorrow afternoon and it is going to be cooler than normal thursday through saturday. tomorrow morning it starts out in the 50s. the temperatures will really be the coolest along the north bay valleys and along the coastline. hour by hour forecasts will give you a glimpse of what to expect. the dense fog for the morning commute, low to upper 50s. at noontime you are looking at bright, sunny skies, upper 50s to low 80s. if you are planning your day, notice how mild to warm it is. low 60s to low 90s at 7:00 p.m. it does get breezy and cooler and upper 50s to the upper 70s. here are your highs for wednesday. still the smoke from the fire near big sur will be impacting the south bay of the upper

70s around sunnyvale and milpitas. upper 70s redwood city and 74 in san mateo and a mild day along the coastline. 60 in pacifica. you will actually see the sun and the fog is expected to pull away. 61 in daly city. some fog is lingering there. north bay mid80s around santa rosa and 79 napa and 74 san rafael. in the east bay, a mild, sunny day. 70 in oakland and 77 fremont. inland areas will be on the warm side again. fairfield, pits ford and discovery bay in the low 90s. 89 in walnut creek. don't get too used to the warmth. the temperatures are going to drop and in a big way. accu-weather seven-day forecast showing you low 80s inland on thursday. a couple of days of mid80s below average temperatures on friday and saturday. upper 50s to low 60s on the coast. and then it warms up a little bit upper 80s inland.
