trucks became stuck in phoenix. and meg whitman crossing party lines and voting for hillary clinton. she's calling trump reckless and uninformed. she even plans to raise money for the clinton campaign. those are our top stories on this wednesday, august 3rd. ♪ from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half hour with the growing zika virus outbreak. aerial spraying to control mosquitoes in a ten square might have mile area begins today. had even though there are questions about whether aerial spraying is effective against these type of mosquitos. another case of zika virus not related to travel outside the u.s. discovered bringing the total to 15, and this new case is of special concern. abc's elizabeth hur is in miami with the latest. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: nick and linzie,

good morning to you. health officials here in florida say the new case was found outside that one-mile radius where they discovered the 14 earlier cases. what's happening now is investigation is underway to see if this new case is, in fact, connected to the others. attacking zika virus on the ground and soon from the air. >> you know about the zika virus that's going around? >> reporter: with police already joining in, handing out bug repellants, and mosquito control delivering zika virus prevention kits, even treatments for standing water. all of this to try to stop the spread of the virus, locally transmitted. officials admit containing the outbreak, no easy task. >> this is sometimes referred to as the cockroach of mosquitos. it can survive about anywhere. it can breed in a capful of water. it's an indoor mosquito. >> reporter: the virus linked to severe birth defects prompted the cdc to warn pregnant women

to stay away. a first in the continental u.s. and that warning alarming for some travelers just landing in miami. >> i was kind of scared to come here. i was trying to switch my flight to not come here. >> i never really put any bug repellant on or anything like that. but now i have the babies and myself, so that's what i'll be doing. >> reporter: miami-dade will start aerial spraying on wednesday. medical experts say don't expect a miracle. >> aerial spraying works well for high-flying mosquitoes. the mosquito that spreads zika lives in containers around your home. aerial spraying isn't going to add a lot. >> reporter: dr. besser said that for now the best protection you can take against these zika-carrying mosquitoes is as simple as wearing the bug repellants. >> thanks, elizabeth. the cdc will spend $16 million to help babies born with microcephaly. the birth defects caused by the zika virus. the money will go to the 40

states and territories so they can notify families of resources available to them. the funds will also help gather information. so far 13 babies have been born to a mother who contacted zika virus overseas. donald trump firing back to president obama who called trump woefully unprepared to be president. trump is claiming he knows more about foreign policy than the president who questioned trump's knowledge of national affairs. the president also chastised republican leaders for not withdrawing their support, and he blasted trump for going after the parents of a fallen soldier. >> i think the republican nominee is unfit to serve as president. i said so last week. and he keeps on proving it. >> trump said that president obama may be the worst president ever, and he shocked fellow republicans by refusing to endorse paul ryan and senator john mccain as they run for

reelection. trump is also under fire for his reaction to receiving a purple heart from a supporter. people on both sides of the aisle are weighing in. more details from juju chang. something very nice just happened to me. a man came up to me, and he handed me his purple heart. >> reporter: donald trump campaigning to be the next commander in chief, never saw combat, never served in the military, but now has a purple heart thanks to an avid supporter, an honor awarded to those wounded in battle. >> that's, like, big stuff. i always wanted to get the purple heart. this was much easier. >> reporter: his lighthearted reaction lighting up social media with veterans, like one tweeting real trump, this is how one usually looks when you're awarded the purple heart. nothing easy about it.

first responders reportedly ran out of tourniquets. the bus nearly sliced in half by this highway sign. >> that pole went through the center of the bus, and that's where the injuries were sustained. >> reporter: it was going from mexico to washington state crashing here fresno. 30 passengers on board. at least five killed. the driver, a 57-year-old, mario david vasquez, remains in the hospital with serious injuries. >> he told me he was very careful because he wanted to come home and see us. >> reporter: overhead highway signs are designed not break away. if they do, they can pose a hazard to traffic. in 2011 15 people were killed in the bronx after a bus hit an overhead sign. >> reporter: this company has a satisfactory safety rating. we found multiple citations, some of which have led to drivers and buses being pulled off the road. the ntsb is investigating.

are seeking legal action against fiat chrysler. >> they say his jeep cherokee caused his death, and they're trying to prevent it from happening to others. >> reporter: just six weeks after anton yelchin was killed by his jeep, and his parents announcing their filing a lawsuit against the makers of the jeep. >> his death might save some other lives. >> reporter: in may, fiat chrysler sent a letter to jeep owners saying the cherokee may suddenly roll away if the engine is left running and the driver fails to put it in park. you can see how it may be confusing since the lever springs back to the center no matter what gear you're in. in june the jeep rolled back crushing him against a gate. a letter announcing a fix for the defect arrived seven days after his death. 1.1 million vehicles recalled. >> that problem existed for years and years and years.

news breaking overnight overseas. north korea's fourth reported missile launch in about two weeks. the missile fired this morning flew more than 600 miles into the waters off north korea's east coast. top north korean diplomat tells abc news the launch is a direct response to what he called the constant nuclear blackmail of the u.s. more launches are expected in the coming weeks to protest annual u.s. military exercises with south korean forces. there are new accusations that the syrian government used chemical weapons against civilians. a rebel group is sharing those photos of what it says are chlorine gas canisters dropped from a military helicopter. at least 30 people reportedly suffered from chemical injuries. the government rejected the claim and accused the rebels of using chemical weapons themselves. and a new front in the battle for the strategic syrian city of aleppo. opposition groups carried out a tunnel bombing of a government artillery building.

300,000 civilians are believed to be trapped in the city. in massachusetts, two men are in custody after threatening police. prosecutors in salem say the suspects were arrested with large-capacity guns. they were listening to the police radio frequency at the time. during the arrests, the men were talking about recent police killings and acting in a threatening manner. they are being held without bail. the zika virus is spreading in south florida. there is a 15th case of the infection not related to travel. this one is not within the miami neighborhood where the others were. health officials are working hard to contain the spread of zika. abc's eva pilgrim is there. >> reporter: the full-on assault against zika ramping up the battle, taking it to the sky. the aerial spraying in miami beginning as soon as the morning. the county's mayor, carlos jimenez, saying they're up against a tough enemy. these mosquitoes are proving to be a little bit difficult to get rid of. >> mosquitoes have always been

new video this morning from the kilauea lava flow on hawaii's big island. it's been flowing into the pacific ocean for a week now. the first time it's flowed into the ocean in three years. no threat to nearby communities. time-lapse photography taken in mid-june shows kilauea's lava flowing like an ocean or river. this is flowing over an old neighborhood. it almost looks like commuter graphics effects from a sci-fi movie, but it's movie from here on our planet. turning to a terrifying scene that played out inside a convenience store in houston, texas. >> heavily armed, masked gunmen passengered into the store, opening fire sending employees

>> thank you. and donald trump crossed a legal hurdle against his defunct university. the judge trump said could not make an unbiased decision. the judge says the deposition videos would make it difficult to seat an impartial jury. he's refusing to dismiss the lawsuit. weather permitting, aerial spraying of a ten-square-mile area of south florida begins at daybreak to control mosquitos. it includes the wynwood area of miami where 14 cases of zika were found that were not related to travel. now a 15th case has popped up outside of wynwood, leading to fears that it's spreading to a larger area. the outbreak is taking a bite out f miami's tourism. restaurants and bars are closed. some airlines will waive rebooking fees or issue refunds

if passengers no longer wish to travel to areas with zika virus outbreaks. all of the carriers suggest customers check the latest recommendations from the centers for disease control. a survivor of an horrific bus crash on the central california highway says the bus he was on was trying to pass another vehicle when it slammed into a sign post. that post nearly cut in half. at least five of the 30 passengers were killed. 18 others were treated at hospitals. some remain in serious condition. the bus driver was among the injured. he's yet to be interviewed by investigators. >> he was always talking about his job. he told me that he was very careful, because he wanted to come home and see us. >> the damage to the bus was so severe that first responders were forced to enter through the windows. they reported running out of tourniquets while treating passengers. a raging brush fire near wine country.

at least 600 acres have burned so far near the border of nala and yolo counties. a nearby campground has been evacuated. so far there is no containment of the fire and no word on what caused it. officials say do know the cause of the massive wildfire near big sur. the fire destroyed 57 homes and caused the death of one man was sparked by an abandoned illegal campfire. authorities want to find the person persons who started the fire. more than 44,000 acres have burned -- bigger than the city of san francisco. the annual monsoon soon is swamping parts of arizona. flash floods forced a closing of one interstate yesterday because of stuck cars and trucks. thousands of people lost power. there were multiple water rescues. some areas of phoenix got hit with two inches of rain in just an hour. dryer air moves in on thursday. forecasters say tropical storm earl is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before it makes landfall.

it's threatening to bring heavy rain and strong winds to mexico, belize, and honduras. at least six people were killed in the dominican republic. they're making storm preparations in jamaica. no word on a timeline for the findings of a new vatican commission studying whether women can be deacons. married men can be deacons, and they can preside at weddings, baptisms and funerals. historians point out that women served as deacons in early days of the church. we know that when police officers go to work every day, they're never really sure what they're going to encounter. this is a perfect example. >> it happened in a small maine community. we think you'll understand what's going on. >> we got a possible mad cow situation here. all right, you guys. just step over to the side of the road and put your hands in the air. don't run me from me. i'm the police.
