keep calm, you internet's on. breaking news happening in daly city where a car has struck a child in a crosswalk. this is a live look at the espn. at west moor and south may fair avenue which is shut down in the area. there is a tow truck trying to get the car out of the way. police tell us this happened before 2:00. the child was transported with potentially life-threatening injuries. the driver stayed at the espn and is cooperating with authorities. vic lee just arrived on scene. he'll have much more on abc 7 news at 5:00. follow him on twitter for breaking updates. for now. good afternoon, i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. larry beil is on assignment at espn. we'll turn to the wildfires

burning in napa county, dull doubling in side overnight growing in acres. we caught the aerial assault west of winters. duane freedman is live with the latest. >> reporter: good afternoon, dan, it did double in size. but it was a estimate. last night they were estimated 2200 acres and when the smoke cleared this morning they saw it burned much more. behind me the northeast corner of the fire, the line where they want to keep. it the cold far as they call it has burned all of those acres, mostly brush. and they were fortunate because so far the winds have stayed down. >> it has been a long and hot 24 hours in the cattle lands of the yo lo county. and the action hot above as cal fire spent the day trying to keep the cold fire -- as they call it -- contained from people and structures. so far so good.

>> i didn't think it would spread that fast. >> and then when it did? >> and when it did, i was shocked. >> reporter: it forced evacuations from home and campgrounds as soon as it broke out yesterday. one campground was empty this morning. no people, just traces of people, leaving in a hurry. then we discovered it wasn't quite a ghost town. >> you could still see the smoke but they had the back five up the hill. >> steve and his wife pauline never left. >> i want out of here, you don't know how badly. >> must wife was pretty skittish. and she was wanting to leave. and i sort of talked her out of it. >> i can't go anywhere because he drives. >> tbts they have the campground to themselves, out of harm's way. meantime the battle rages with boots on the ground and aircraft in the sky, a few ridgelines over. and as you look at the ridgelines, one is familiar territory for the men battling

flames. this fire it burning in the same footprint as the monticello fire did two years ago. there is an advantage to that. the firefighters know the geography and in some cases they have cuts of the land made by bulldozers they could use today to fight that fire as it moves on. live in yo lo county, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. now dry conditions helped a wildfire in monterey grow. the soberain grew 5500 acres. containment is only 25%. it has burned homes and threatened 2,000 others. a illegal campfire sparked the fire. the fire is now 72 square miles. the governor has declared a state of emergency. right now there are eight major fires burning across california. hot, dry temperatures often combined with winds have made fire fighting conditions very difficult at times. >> let's check in with abc 7

news meteorologist sandhya patel with a look at what we can expect here in the bay area. >> dan and ama, right now we're seeing hazy skies behind me and across the bay area because of both of those hires that wayne talked about and that you talked about, ama. let's check out live doppler 7 hd and we'll look at how it looks right now. it is foggy along the coastline and the rest of you are seeing the sun. now near the cold fire here are the conditions. at the lower elevations, 74 degrees with a south wind to 15. that is pushing that smoke up north. and then at the higher elevations, near the fire line, 90 degrees. so it is hot. winds are very light. radar is picking up some of that smoke from the fire. the next 24 hours we are expecting the temperature -- the wind trend to look like this. it gets breezy at 5:00 p.m., about 17 mile-per-hour and then the winds will decrease but they will continue to drop off into the morning hours. golden gate bridge camera showing you the fog that is lingering. we'll go with the coastal fog in the 50s to mid-70s tomorrow morning, over cast skies and

drizzling and upper 40s to 50s and a cooler and breezy afternoon with low 60s to the mid-80s. temperatures will be dropping below where they need to be for this time of the year. i'll let you know if this will continue for the upcoming weekend. >> thank you so much. well aviation officials are trying to determine what caused a hard landing of an emirates airline jet. >> after that landing there was an explosion that left ten people hospitalized and one firefighter dead. >> ray raimundi has the latest developments on this. >> reporter: an explosion right in the middle of a runway in dubai. emirates airlines flight 521 erupting in smoke and flames. the incident coming after a hard landing at dubai international airport. at least one firefighter losing his life while battling the flames. among the passengers, six americans, all 300 passengers and crew feeling lucky to be

alive. >> reporter: the boeing 77 traveling from south india to dubai and everything appeared normal just before touchdown and then the hard landing and dubai international the busiest airport in the middle east shut down for hours. the emirates chairman addressing speculation on what caused the crash. >> it could be a wind shear in that kind of area. it is not clear. >> but the pieltss had expense -- the pilots had extensive experience flying but the question now what happened in the final moments before landing. for passengers, there is only relief. >> our family is safe. we have our lives. >> reporter: the ntsb is sending five investigators to the crash sight and boeing is launching a team to serve aztec nickal advisers supporting the

investigation. abc news, new york. several homes have been evacuated after a backhoe hit a gas line and started a fire in the woodland hills area and the fire is still burning now. firefighters are working to keep the flames from spreading. the gas line was expected to be shut off at about 2:00 but crews are still working to shut it down. the death toll from yesterday's charter bus accident in merced county was resized today to four victims. yesterday authorities had said five people died. officials released the identity of the four people who died. they are a 68-year-old from california which is located on catalina island and 38-year-old de los santos and a couple from mexico fernandez ramirez and a 64-year-old and the ntsb is on scene investigating the crash. >> was the driver fatigued? was there a potential medical

episode? was there some type of distraction by a phone or some other means? >> the ntsb said it will be in central california for the next five to seven days. the highway patrol is also investigating. the 29-year-old driver of this nissan that plunged off a cliff along highway 9 in saratoga overnight turned himself into police after running away from the wreck. a woman who was a passenger in the car was killed. another teenage girl was badly hurt. first responders thought the driver was ejected and used heat-seeking cameras to search the area. >> the fire department, including our guys, did an extensive search of the area using floor cameras and we searched -- i mean, as far as we think a body could be projected out of the vehicle with no luck. >> at 8:30 this morning, the driver alex eduardo garcia surrendered to police and the highway patrol said he will be booked for felony hit-and-run,

vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license. and the suspected killer of a woman shot in austin, texas, over the weekend has been arrested in atlanta. the school bus driver was not the intended target of the accused gunman, the 24-year-old. mccray was arrested this morning in atlanta by the u.s. marshal service. she was visiting her wife's family when she was killed on the austin famed sixth street and they believe the gunman was aiming at someone else. courts in santa clara scramble to fill in when court workers went on strike. >> and david louie is live outside of the santa clara count hall of justice where the picket line is noisy and disruptive. david? >> reporter: disruptive is a good term to describe the impact this strike has had on court operations. an attorney with business here today called it chaotic. the walk-out by court clerks and janitors has to do with money

and an offer they find unacceptable. they make a lot of noise for people who speak in hushed tones in courtrooms. they are raising voices in the court of public opinion, arguing they deserve a better deal after no pay raises for eight years. their absence left a void inside of the courts. >> my judge in that department decided to fill out -- a minute order herself, so she had that extra responsible this morning. >> reporter: with pay frozen in the $50,000 range, many have had to take a second job. she works as a wine steward on the weekends. >> i had to move away to a city called newman, california, to support the rent on my own. >> the san jose police officers

association brought bottle to the strikers and they hope for a fast resolution because of the impact on obtaining arrest warrants. the union president and courtroom clerk told us the last offer of 5% now and 5% later isn't good enough. >> we are willing to go back to the table. i mean, we don't want to go on strike. but we had no choice after eight years of no cola. >> reporter: the court's media representative did not respond requests for interviews. one of the picket claims that a new court family building is opulent and offendive. >> they imported marble and wood from south america and they are wondering what is going on with the priorities. take care of the workers or have a taj mahal to work in. >> reporter: day two of the strike is set for thursday. david louie, abc 7 news. i always wanted to get the purple heart. >> he's not going into ukraine.

just two weeks before the beginning of classes students at berkeley are being told to take precautions for personal safety. >> because on monday night two armed went on a crime spree

stealing cell phones blocks away from campus. >> we are live from berkeley with what students are being told. >> reporter: well berkeley police are just as surprised as you are. now five robberies in a span of two hours is highly unusual. now 24 hours later, students were told what to do. one day after two men committed a series of robberies, cal students received an alert from campus police with safety tips. >> i got this yesterday at 4:55 p.m. it just comes a notification as an e-mail and you just read it. >> reporter: berkeley police said the cell phones were reported stolen at 10:02, 10:15 and 10:19 and all in the evening. >> they gave the same description for all suspects. >> both are described as african-american and in their

teens or early 20s and wearing gray and black sweatshirts. witnesses say they saw a gun. one of the crimes was reported on derby streets and four minutes later on channing way and dana street. this woman lives nearby and always carries mace. >> it makes you aware of what is going on and i'm sure there are other places where they have issues like these but it is important to keep the students aware of what is around them. >> reporter: berkeley claims to be the number one public institution in the country, home of 22 noble laureates but it also has a reputation for the crime rate. a recent department of education report found berkeley among college campuses with the most reported robberies. >> if you are traveling at night, traveling in a group is always a better idea. maybe take that cell phone or that smart device and put it in a pocket until you get on where you are going and focus on your surroundings. >> we are taking advantage of the bus that comes at nights because that is a lot safer than just walking around campus at night.

>> reporter: police are still asking the public to help them find those responsible for the robberies. in berkeley, leen mel mel, abc 7 news. police say they are going to increase the number of officers patrolling this weekend's outside lands music festival in golden gate park. today crews set up for the three-day festival. it ends on sunday and officers will be out in force both in uniform and in plain clothes to make sure that tens of thousands expected to attend stay safe. this year police will be keeping a close eye on each other. >> obviously it is a heightened alert for terrorism and for attacks on police officers nationwide so we are going to be out there in force making sure that we protect the public and ourselves as much as we possibly can. >> radiohead and lcd and elena del ray and lionel ritchie top this year's acts. del ray and richie will close out the festival on sunday. a long time veteran of the san francisco police force

and the south central bay and from the sfo camera, low cloudiness today and more tonight along with fog and patchy morning drizzle. cooler weather and temperatures rebound early next week. tomorrow morning, we will see some spotty drizzle, upper 40s to the upper 50s. low clouds and fog will be pretty widespread with the exception of our inland valleys so here is your hour-by-hour forecast. 7:00 tonight it is socked in along the coastline. the low clouds will push in toward the bay for 5:00 a.m. commute time. you notice the green, that is drizzle. and now at 10:00 a.m., the gray skies don't completely pull away from the bay or the coast. inland areas will see the sun. but slower clearing means the temperatures drop tomorrow afternoon. and the coastal areas will never quite see the sun. so highs for your thursday, mild inland. below normal for this time of year. 82 in livermore and antioch. 85 in concord and fairfield. 68 in oakland. 62 san francisco. 73 in san mateo.

74 in san rafael, mid-70s around palo alto and 62 in san francisco. here is a look the at accuweather seven-day forecast. below average right on through saturday, only low to mid-80s inland. upper 50s along the coastline. and then we'll notice the temperatures come up a few degrees on sunday. mid-80s inland and low 60s coast. back to the typical summer spread like today, we've had most of the temperatures in the low 60s to low 90s. that is what we're expecting monday through wednesday of next week with mid-60s along the coastline but today so far, like i said, it was warmer today because of the marine layer compressing so it is not reaching some of our inland valleys and it is allowed things to warm up around here. >> thank you, sandhya. ♪ the magic of harry potter's world is coming back to theaters and it won't be the only movie.

and here is what is making headlines at 4:30. a firefighter died today in dubai responding to an emirates airline plane crash. the accident happened as the boeing 777 was arriving from south india. 300 people on board. all of them escaping the burning plane. witnesses reported a problem with the landing gear. and new information about the man driving the chaert bus that crashed in merced county killing four people. melanie woodrow looks into the driver's past violations. firefighters are trying to contain what they are calling the cold fire, west of winters in yo lo county. right now the fire is about 4,000 acres and 5% contains. at 5:00, wayne freedman will have the latest on the firefighter efforts to slow the growing wildfire. an oakland boy hopes his bad

experience for a special school will help other kids. the department of education found he was the victim of discrimination because he was physically restrained nearly 100 times in just one school year. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has the story live from oakland. >> reporter: well the school at the center of the case is in concord. we tried to contact them but they are closed for the summer session. ultimately, the federal agency found that it was the oakland school district because they placed the boy there that was responsible for what happened to him. >> they were using it as a means of a time-out or something. >> reporter: stewart is 12 now but remembers well what happened three years ago when he was a student at concord center for education. >> they took me out of the classroom into a restraint room and held me down there. >> and an adult held you down? >> it was two, three or four. >> he has autism.

skyline boulevard, the blue station wagon is stopped about where the collision happened. a long-time resident lives across the street from the crosswalk. >> i'm not surprised that that happened. unfortunately, that is a really awful intersection. i never drive and make a left or right turn on it. i always go the opposite way. i don't even like to cross the street because they are coming around skyline, it gets foggy, people are in a hurry. >> reporter: he tells us skyline mall is a busy place at all hours of the day and that drivers speed as they make the turn from skyline on to westmoo r. >> when they come around the corner, there is no stop sign or no nothing. and if you are not -- you could be in the crosswalk and if you are not looking left or right, many, many times -- i'm half way out and people don't care. they make the right turn into the market and it is unfortunate but a bad, bad intersection and they need to do something about
