good thursday morning. i'm nick watt. >> and i'm linzie janis. diane and kendis are off. we begin with the republican party in crisis mode struggling to get donald trump back on track. >> after feuding with the family of a fallen soldier refusing to endorse two republicans and repeatedly veering off topic, trump is denying reports that his campaign is in chaos. but the gop leadership is preparing for a worst case scenario. we get the latest from abc's maggie rulli. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: good morning, nick and linzie. as donald trump's republican support continues to slip away, the candidates insists that his campaign is stronger than ever. >> the campaign is doing really well. it's never been so well united. right now it's the best in terms of being united that it's been since we began.

>> reporter: but republican leaders see a campaign imploding and are practically begging trump to rein it in. >> you have one person to attack, hillary clinton. >> he has got to find a way to slow down, really learn some new lessons. this is a little like "the apprentice." >> reporter: the head of the rnc reince priebus called trump personally to express frustration about his campaign and about his attacks on an american-muslim soldier. this comes as hillary clinton opened up a ten-point lead on donald trump according to a new poll from fox news. that's up six points just one month ago. vice presidential candidate senator mike pence broke with trump wednesday by endorsing ryan's re-election, something trump has said he's not quite there yet. republican leadership tells abc they've been working on contingency plans should trump leave the race. though, so far he hasn't expressed any interest in doing so. meanwhile, hillary clinton not missing her opportunity

to knock trump stopping by a tie company in denver yesterday. >> i would like him to explain why he paid chinese workers to make trump ties. >> reporter: continuing on to mock trump's campaign slogan, saying if he wants to make america great again, he should start by making things in america again. trump is trying to smooth over some of his self-inflicted damage after he angered many veterans by attacking the khan family. last night he met with gold star families to hear their concerns. >> thanks so much. maggie rulli live for us in washington. donald trump is getting some good news on the fund-raising front, significantly closing the gap with hillary clinton. >> trump took in $80 million last month for his campaign and the republican party powered by small donations. that's compared to 90 million for hillary clinton during the same time period. back in june, the campaigns had a nearly $20 million fund-raising gap. the recent controversy surrounding the trump campaign turned out to be the tipping point for a republican

congressman from illinois. representative adam kinzinger says he was on the fence but now he doesn't see how he can endorse donald trump. he said trump has crossed so many red lines that a presidential candidate should never cross. kinzinger said he's an american before a republican and he won't be silent. the obama administration's secret 400 million cash payment to iran has become a campaign issue. donald trump called it a scandal. the white house says the payment made just as four americans were released from custody in january was the settlement of an old legal claim, not ransom. trump says it was his opponent, former secretary of state hillary clinton, who started the talks about the money in the first place. >> we paid $400 million for the hostages, right? such a bad precedent. >> this $400 million is actually money that the iranians had paid

into a u.s. account in 1979. >> other top republicans are claiming the cash payment was nothing more than a bribe for the nuclear deal with iran. terrorism has not been ruled out as a possible reason for a deadly knife attack in central london. police secured the russell square area. that's where the attack happened last night. a woman in her 60s was killed and five others wounded. a 19-year-old man was tasered by police before being taken into custody. authorities say his mental health may also be a significant factor in the case. that area was the scene of the deadly july 7th bombings in 2005. a landing gear problem is the focus of an investigation into the crash landing of an emirates airlines jetliner. the boeing 777 was seen sliding down a runway in dubai yesterday. moments later a fuel tank in the wing exploded, part of it flying into the air. all 300 people on the plane evacuated safely.

some even grabbing their bags on their way to the emergency slides. questions remain about whether the pilots may have failed to deploy the landing gear. >> even with all the sophisticated electronics of these modern day jets the 77, you have to physically put the gear down itself. it will squawk at you and give you warnings and have checklists and procedures. it's almost an infinitesimal probability that a gear uplanding problem will occur, and we may have seen one of the first instances of this in a very long time. >> one firefighter was killed while helping to extinguish the plane. emirates airlines says the 13-year-old plane was up to date with its safety inspections. also breaking overnight, hurricane earl has made landfall in the central american nation of belize. the storm came ashore with heavy rain and winds of 80 miles an hour. the government opened storm shelters, and residents of low-lying areas were urged to move to higher ground. honduras, guatemala and mexico are next in the storm's path.

here in the u.s., severe storms developing overnight in the midwest. two twisters were spotted in north dakota, no damage reported. those severe storms now moving into minnesota. and in california, strong winds are helping to spread the fire near wine country. the cold fire has burned nearly 5,000 acres and is only 10% contained. hundreds of firefighters are battling the blaze in rugged terrain. helicopters have been scooping water from a nearby lake to drop on the fire. it's called the cold fire because it's burning near winters, california. also in california, a series of earthquakes rattled a remote area last night. the initial magnitude 4.5 quake hit near janesville north of the reno, nevada area and it was quickly followed by three aftershocks. there were no reports of damage but one woman said it felt like her mobile home was going to be knocked off its foundation. still ahead, details breaking overnight about a massive cyberattack at a health

the shootings began, nine people have been shot. seven have died. there's an arrest in a murder mystery in an atlanta suburb. jeffrey hazelwood has been arrested for killing two teenagers. their bodies found behind a roswell supermarket. but police are not revealing a motive or even how the people are connected. they do reveal that they were led to hazelwood after getting into the teenager's cell phones. president obama has granted clemency to 214 individuals, the most sentences commuted in one day since 1900. many of those whose sentences were communitied were nonviolent drug offenders. the president has made criminal justice reform a key issue during his two terms. one of the nation's largest health care systems says it has been hit by a large-scale cyberattack. banner health is in the process of notifying nearly 4 million people that their personal information may have been

compromised. that includes everything from credit card and social security numbers to health plan details. banner health says it has taken steps to block the cyberattacks. walmart looking to boost its web sales is in talks to buy online retailer jet.com. the deal would be worth up to $3 billion. jet.com was founded last year to compete with amazon but has recently struggled. and tiger woods won't be getting any more new golf equipment from nike. that's because the company will no longer be making golf balls, bags and clubs, but it will continue a line of golf footwear and clothing. no word yet on how the move will affect nike's contracts with woods and other golfers. when we come back, close call for one driver. a huge pole slamming through the windshield. and the olympic opening ceremony is tomorrow night, but team usa's soccer team already in action. we've got the highlights.

neighbors describe him as a loner. >> i'm not shocked because he was so weird. he was just so secluded. >> reporter: officials who had been tracking him for six years say young was part of a radical network and previously associated with this man, amin el khalifi seen in this fbi undercover video readying an attack on the u.s. capitol. mary bruce, abc news, washington. a south carolina man is fighting for his life after being infected with a rare brain-eating amoeba. the man came into contact with the amoeba after swimming in a river in the state. the infection is fatal in 95% of cases, but experts say you can't get it just by swallowing water. only when water is forced up the nose. a massachusetts woman has survived a freak accident near boston. this metal pole went straight through liz soar's windshield like a speer but she escaped with just minor injuries. she crashed into the fence when she suffered a medical emergency and says she blacked out. the pole came within inches of

her head. she only suffered a bruised elbow. a muslim woman says she was told to either remove her veil or leave an indiana family dollar store. sara safi said she explained she wore the garments for religious reasons but the clerk said it was a high crime area and the store gets robbed a lot. safi recorded part of the encounter on her cell phone. family dollar has not commented. now to sports. the rio olympics are under way despite the opening ceremony not being open till tomorrow. one of the first teams to play was the u.s. women's soccer team. >> they scored a goal in each half last night in a 2-0 win against new zealand. the next match for the american ladies is saturday against france. the u.s. is trying to become the first women's soccer team to follow a world cup triumph with an olympic gold medal. and the men's soccer competition begins today in brazil. the u.s. team did not qualify for the tournament. as for baseball highlights
