on the peninsula this morning, showing you a trace of rain today but when the storms do roll in, east palo alto faces dangerous flooding from this creek. after years of waiting finally a solution. thank you for joining us. >> kristen is off today. new this morning when the san francisco creek floods it could be really bad. thousands of homes sit in its path. the ground breaking of a project for decades and tens of millions in the making to protect these properties. katie is live in east palo alto. katie? >> reporter: i'll show you

exactly why this is a problem. i'm standing on the levee. the homes over here are below sea level and the roof lines are below the height of the levee. this portion of the creek, the project is going to widen it double it in width. and you can see over this way they have just broking ground, ceremonial shovel dig and delegates involved in this have shoveled dirt to kick this off. this is preventing flooding from the bay to 101 and beyond. massive floods in 1998 and 2012 caused extensive damage. this project has been in the works since the 1950s. but since the creek crosses so many geographical borders and cities and counties and federal government on the same page has been a challenge. there are even three protective species in the marshland but the $41 million is now a reality and

will bring flood relief for years to come. >> this project will change from the creek from about a capacity from a 40-year flow to 100 year flow with several feet of sea level rise. we're baking in sea level rise into the project and extreme tides because this whole area is influenced by bay tides. >> reporter: shots show how challenging it will be to make the creek less prone to flooding. ten acres from the golf course will be used for creek widening and will be dredged to get rid of sediment buildup. it is expected to take two and a half years. other portions of the project are in the planning phases. abc 7 news. >> thank you so much, katie. new video shows wet roads that ushered in this friday morning in the north bay. this is along 101 near spencer avenue. you can see there's mist covering the cars as they

approach the golden gate bridge. >> the weather does matter to tens and thousands of music fans turning out this weekend. >> the outside lands festival is taking over golden gate park. >> we have team coverage this midday. up on the roof monitoring our forecast, i don't see an umbrella. that's a good thing. >> let's go to amy live at the park. >> reporter: natasha, gates are open and people are already starting to arrive. i asked why they are here so early? they said they are trying to beat the crowds and get a parking spot. crowds are going to be an issue. they are expected 210,000 people this weekend. they prepared for people inside. outside too people living around the park, they are also preparing. >> living outside of outside lands come with a whole set of issues. >> we've been here for every one

and it gets really crowded. not so loud but a lot of people walking around, can't find anywhere to park. it's a hassle. >> reporter: allen arnold is making a run for it. >> we're heading south to avoid crowds for sure. >> reporter: margaret mulligan is doing the opposite. by 8:00 this morning her parked where it will stay. >> i'm not going to move for the rest of the weekend pretty much. >> reporter: really? why? >> because once you drive away, you don't get your spot back. >> reporter: allen isn't sure what to expect. he just moved to the neighborhood across from golden gate park and heard horror stories from the neighbors. >> i think it's going to be noisy. that's just what you have to put up with. >> reporter: neighbors complain about trash left on the streets and people relieving themselves in their yard. it is thriving with fans. it sold out in 45 minutes.

margaret mulligan has the attitude, if you can't beat them, join them. >> i go to the concert so i have tickets and everything. we can hear it here. it's always fun but you know, if it didn't happen, that would be okay too. >> reporter: outside lands has a free valet and offering a shuttle, which is not free. i checked with the rec and parks department, they work to address the residents concerns every year. didn't give me any specifics but said complaints have been going down every year. it was drizzly early this morning but it has cleared up and not sunny, which is nice, you won't get too hot. mike joins to tell us what these concert goers with expect. >> yeah, those live shots from the morning show when it was drizzling on you, it didn't look promising, but there will be sunshine this afternoon. let's look at the day planner,

start at noon 57 degrees. clouds will open slowly and festive goers, people there will have sunscreen on. down to 54 by 10:00 when the crowds and mist come back. let's see saturday and sunday, we'll wake up cloudy with drizzle and same thing on sunday. tomorrow will be cooler, 59 and top out at 53 on sunday. loss for words there for a second. >> lionel richie and muppets will fill us in. >> you can download the app for free and enable push alerts for instant updates throughout the weekend. cal fire does say it could have the cold fire burnings soon as tuesday. right now it's at 15%. they updated us to say 4700 acres have burned. there are zero structures

threatened right now. evacuation orders for residents was lifted yesterday. >> monterey county where cal fire does not expect to fully contain the fire near big sur until the end of the month. it has grown to 53,000 acres. containment bumped up slightly, now at 35%. the wildfire has burned 57 homes and blamed for the death of a cal fire contractor. evacuations remain in place for thousands. a baby with zika related birth deinfects was born in the bay area and there are new recommendations for all pregnant women. abc 7 has what you need to know. jessica? >> this midday all pregnant women in the u.s. are being advised to be assessed for possible zika exposure during every prenatal visit. the recommendation came earlier this week from the cdc. last night abc 7 news learned a baby with zika related birth

defects was born in berkeley. the baby was born a couple of months ago. two babies born in california have zika related microcephaly after their mothers spent time in zika infected country. the head is smaller than normal because the brain hasn't developed properly. >> i'd like to emphasize that what we do not know about zika, its effects and spread remains greater than what we do know. >> in california, there have been zero cases of zika transmitted through mosquitos and infections have been linked to foreign travel. the right of recommendation for screening for pregnant women comes after mosquito related cases were reported in south florida earlier this week. zika can spread through sex. the cdc recommends partners of women trying to get pregnant should also be tested if they travel to areas with the zika indemic.

abc 7 news. meanwhile, the fda has given the green light to release a genetically modified mosquito to the florida keys. the males will mate with wild female mosquitos and die off. their offspring will die off as well. the trial has been tested in three locations overseas and the company claims there's about a 90% reduction in the local population. some florida residents are concerned about the release of these mosquitos into their environment. a photo of two labradors in the san francisco police officer's newsletter are sparking controversy. the black lab is wearing a sign that says black labs matter and yellow labs wearing a sign that says all labs matter. maybe it's time we all sit back and tone down the rhetoric. already people are saying this is innocensensitive to the blac

lives matter movement. >> developing news in san jose, sky 7 was overhead as investigators search for clues south of downtown. a train hit a 54-year-old man riding a bicycle. he was taken to the hospital but died. this happened at gregory street near interstate 280. commuters face delays for part of the morning rush hour. it is all back to normal now. >> they are looking into a deadly motorcycle crash along a busy stretch of the boulevard. he died later at the scene near mill pid is boulevard. the santa clara county medical examiner coroner is working to identify the victim. >> san francisco's mayor is ordering city agencies to speed up projects and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians. the list of directives focuses

a man's family is filing a civil rights lawsuit following

his shooting death at the hands of sack maramento police. this is cell phone video when they confronted joseph mann. they believe officers should have tried to subdue him with nonlethal tools like a taser. civil rights attorney john burris accuses police of dispatching a firing squad. sacramento police have not commented oj the suit. very little business is taking place inside santa clara courthouses because of a strike by clerks and other workers. striking workers are picketing again today, day three of their work strike. they want raises from the court system. many can't resolve traffic tickets and deal with other court business because no one is available to help them. union leaders will hold a press conference shortly. we'll be tweeting stuff out at abc 7 news bay area. a new spin on a san francisco favorite. how about four-legged friends

what larry has. >> i heard it was pretty intense during those basketball scrimmages up in bristol during his day. good morning, here's a look at what's going on. we'll start with sunshine in the south bay. cool weekend highs for all of us with clouds and patchy drizzle during the overnight hours. dry and warmer monday and tuesday. two days of solid summer weather in the 7-day forecast. we'll have a little drizzle along the coast and most of us remain dry until the sun sets and then the drizzle rolls in from the coast. you can see pockets of sunshine but not a complete gray-out today. mid upper 50s and 60s just about everywhere except down in the south bay. antioch and loss gatos seeing sunshine. mid to upper 70s as warm as we'll get. low to mid-70s for the

peninsula. hoping for low to mid-60s for the coast downtown san francisco and sauif you're going to the sonoma county fair, we'll start about cloudy and 60. it will be about 74 at 3:00. watch out, you'll need the sunscreen even though it will feel comfortable outside. mid-60s around berkeley and low 70s most of the east bay. we could hit 73 in union city and mid 70s to 80s. if you're heading out this evening by 7:00, we're already in the upper 50s at the coast, around the bay mid-60s. by 9:00, 50s and 60s for all of us, grab a jacket. we've got the fremont festival this weekend. got the festival of arts, 63 to 71, a little mist saturday morning. little more sunshine saturday, 55 to 75. thinking about going to the best, 71 today and little drizzle and 73 tomorrow. we'll start off with fog sunday

just one leg. this picture went viral and hundreds are coming to his aid. >> finally friday, time to meet our perfect pet. >> mike nicco is back. >> good morning, we've got a cat to feature on perfect pet and her name is cassidy. she comes from the humane society silicon valley where the volunteers call her the favorite squinty kitty. she came in april and raised her seven baby kittens but eventually taking care of three different orphaned litters. she's now looking to be someone's baby herself. she's affect nat and loves to tug at shoe strings. call the humane society silicon valley, the number is on the screen. >> i wonder if she'll do yoga too? >> naturally. i don't know why she wouldn't. go to hoodline and find out.
