menlo park. they think they were nestled inside of a soil brought to menlo park from a southern state. the county got on it and that mosquito so far has been wiped out. >> this is one of the cups that we have in menlo park. >> reporter: casey is checking one of the traps put out for the mosquito, the carrier of the zika virus. he is looking for eggs. >> we took it back to the lab and put it under a microscope and noticed we aedes aegypti. >> it was found not far from the menlo park neighborhood while monitoring another mosquito. >> a mosquito that had plant material and plant material holds water continuously. >> reporter: they've trazed it back so the southeast part of the country, possibly brought here by a nursery.

>> just take a look around right away because mosquitos could breed in any kind of container. >> reporter: the mosquito and vector control district immediately reached out to neighbors. now they inspected 700 homes in a one and a half mile area every four to six weeks. >> they could hold water in the lip of this if it is upside down. a lot of problems here. >> reporter: he found a small amount of water on the sprinkler head. he collects it and will now send it to the lab. the county has been so proactive, that it has not found any signs of the mosquito in more than a year. >> even though a mosquito that is able to carry the virus is in california, there is so far no evidence that in california that any of the mosquitos are infected with zika. >> reporter: dr. charle chu is a specialist at ucsf and his lab has come up with a device that could sequence the dna of the virus. up to ten people could be tested for the zika virus in under six hours.

lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. the mosquitos that can carry both the zika and west nile virus could cover a large area of the u.s. this is the range of the aedes aegypti, and this is the region that extends well into california and covers the bay area. so far there have been no cases of the zika virus transmitted by mosquitos in california. now there have been more than 1800 cases of zika in the u.s. so far. 15 cases were contracted in florida. nearly 500 women have shown evidence of having the zika virus. 21 of those women are in california. a senior citizen in sacramento county -- >> a senior citizen in sacramento county is the first to dial of west nile virus this year. state health officials did not identify the person or release any further details. last year 53 people died in california after contracting that virus. west nile is spread by birds and mosquitos. new details from stockton

where the meridenied playing an -- the mayor denied playing a strip game with cammers. after he was arrested at his youth camp in the county. he bailed out of jail yesterday. today he read from a prepared statement. >> number one, everyone there was 18 years old. number two, i never ever, ever, ever, endangered a child, ever. number three, i never provided alcohol to anyone. and i certainly did not secretly regard anyone. >> silva, as you could gather, said he is innocent and addressed the theft of a gun from his home used to murder a teenage boy. he denied charges that he didn't cooperate with that investigation. the mayor running for re-election said the timing of the report on the gun theft was politically motivated.

the sonoma county sheriff deputy who shot and killed teen andy lopez two and a half years has been promoted. he will be elevated to sergeant. the sheriff's officials say the 19-year veteran was selected after a competitive civil service exam. he will receive a pay increase. in 2011 he fatally shot the 13-year-old. the teen was carrying an air soft rifle that was a replica of an ak-47 and he was cleared of any wrongdoing. a motorcyclist was badly hurt when he was thrown off his ride. we were over the wreck on the skyway in san francisco. the cyclist suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital. his ride overturned. the crash involved two other cars and jammed the lunchtime drive in the city on the upper deck of the bay bridge. in milpitas, a deadly motorcycle accident. a motorcyclist died at the scene around 5:30 this morning. a bicyclist was killed after

getting hit by a cal train in san jose today. sky 7 hd was overhead as investigators looked for clues near gregory street near interstate 280. a 45-year-old man was killed and his identity has not been released. help is on the way for a community that faces regular flooding. >> there have been two major flood as long the san francisco creek. in 1998 and then in 2012. and that caused millions of dollars of damage and there is plenty of flooding in other years as well. >> the creek runs through east palo alto, palo alto and men lo park and now a long delayed project to prevent future flooding is getting underway. >> david louie is live with what is being done about this. >> reporter: well, dan and ama, a three-year delay in getting permits is over but the problem is the creek is too nary to a -- narrow to allow floodwaters to reach the boy and it is being re-engineered after it was set

near a golf course. >> this trail has a long history of flooding. look at 1998 when it flooded streets and yards in east palo alto and followed by another major flood in 2012. >> these are not levies, be they are not built to strength and this is something long and coming. >> reporter: what is coming is $41 million in flood control work and new flood walls and widened channels and a relocated levy to protect 5700 vulnerable homes and businesses in palo alto and menlo park. >> we have to work with nature. after all, this creek was like a little delta and it was modified and unfortunately development of housing were put right next to it and we didn't really catch those things back 50 years ago. >> reporter: dennis parker has had to deal with flooded streets since moving to this street in

download it for free and track live doppler 7 hd any time. and turning to the wildfires burning across california. full containment on the cold fire is expected next week. the fire is 15% contained and burned 4700 acres. the fire started tuesday near monticello dam along the yo lo and napa county border. the soberanes fire burning is now 35% contained and that changed overnight to the better. it has grown to more than 53,000 acres and it has burned 57om and blamed for the death of a cal fire contractors. evacuations are in place for thousands still in the fire zone. you see it on the map. full containment isn't expected until the end of the month. that fire started two weeks ago today, in fact. for the firefighters on the front lines of the soberanes wildfire, encouragement is coming in many forms. therapy dogs that visit hospitals and libraries are paying visits to firefighter camps. some crews have spent nearly two

and after saying his economic advisers would be peal and he said ivanka would be the one to came to mind that would serve in his cabinet but there is a 1960s law that probably makes that appointment illegal. >> thank you very much. and hackers has turned their attention to u.s. businesses at an unprecedented rate and representatives are more likely to be targeted by ransom ware and keep them locked until it is released. mal-ware bites found an estimated 40% of businesses have been victimized in the last year. companies in health care and financial services were hit most often. in some cases companies have paid upwards of tens of thousands of dollars to free their information. the city of san jose is looking for 400 drivers and you could be one of them to participate in a test involving traffic lights and gas savings. the six-month program revolves around a new app when a light

let's talk about the weather forecast the weekend. >> spencer christian is here with the latest on the weather. >> here is something you recognize. sunshine. it is back. for a while. here is a live look at live doppler 7 hd. it is sunny over the bay and the inland and parts of the coast. could you see that low clouds are rapidly returning. the view from mt. tam over the bay and low clouds and fog returning overnight. maybe a few patches of spotty drizzle. below average temperatures will remain through the weekend. although a little bit of sunshine during the day and a warmer pattern on monday. overnight lows will be in the mid-50s. much like last night with fog reaching from the coast across the bay and locally inland. and the forecast animation starting at 5:00 this afternoon, notice overnight fog returns to the coast and extends across the bay and we'll see some spotty drizzle as i mentioned near the coast and bay. but earlier tomorrow, we'll see clearing. earlier than we saw -- earlier than the last couple of days, i should say. sunshine extending to the

coastal areas late afternoon. and speaking of coastal areas sunshine, outline lands music festival underway this weekend at golden gate park and clouds slow to move away and sunnier on sunday and high temperature both days in the low to mid-60s. a bit breezy tomorrow. so a little cool for most of the day if you are planning to attend the music festival. our forecast calls for high temperatures reaching into the low to mid-80s inland and the cooler day in the forecast peri peri period. a few degrees less on sunday, a not warmer and 70s at the coast and 80s in the bay and low 90s inland. santa cruz beach over the weekend, mainly sunny skies after morning fog. high temperatures in the low to mid-70s. pretty decent beach day. other beaches farther north will be cooler than that. across the bay area, breezy conditions at the coast. low clouds lingering for a while and high temperatures in the upper 50s to around 60.

because of staffing shortages. legal document runners told us many attorneys who handle cases in this court are getting nervous. >> they are being impacted because they have their last day to file and they are possibly going to get sanctioned and their hearing dates wouldn't be heard. >> reporter: and the union has vowed to remain on strike until they got a better deal. chris nguyen, abc 7 news. a father in suburban atlanta is facing charges after he left his twin daughters in a hot suv killing both. north is facing two counties of in voluntary manslaughter for the deaths of his 15-month-old girls. police say after the girls were found, neighbors tried cooling them down in a pool and with ice packs. the girls died at a local hospital. police are investigating to determine if the deaths were accidental. the mother of the children had been in an atlanta hospital after being involved in a car accident. new video released in a fatal police-involved shooting in chicago and for the first

time the family viewed the body camera and dash-cam video. and now the family and the union representing the police are reacting. abc news reporter ray ray mundy has this dramatic footage. >> reporter: watch the moment before the police officers encounter the 18-year-old driving a stolen car. you see an officer drawing his gun. and then that jaguar crashes into the squad car. several shots are then fired as the car speeds off. you can see it just narrowly misses the officer. the video released by an independent authority and o'neal's family seeing it for the first time. >> it was disturbing. very disturbing. not the way anything is supposed to be done. >> and the body cam video shows o'neal running away and police catching up with him and the next video shows him already

lying on the ground and what you don't see is the moment when he is shot. police say the body camera malfunctioned or fell off during the chase. today the backlash as a group of protesters -- not allowing the superintendent to speak, but on the night of the incident, police explained what happened. >> the driver of the stolen vehicle put the vehicle in drive and forced his way out by sideswiping both the squadar and a vehicle that was parked on the street. >> reporter: the three police officers involved in the shooting have been removed from duty pending an investigation. a police representative said there was no misconduct and the release of this video could jeopardize officer safety. ray raimundi, abc 7 news. police in phoenix have linked a ninth incident to a serial street shooter targeting people at random. they began in march. seven people have been killed. the latest happened july 11thth

when a 21-year-old man and a four-year-old boy wore shot at in a car. neither were struck. police have released a sketch of the gunman and they are offering a $50,000 reward for his arrest. a deluge of weather caused flooding in downtown phoenix. heavy rain soaked streets and freeways bringing the morning commute to a stand-still. the storms knocked out power to more than 17,000 households. those in scottsdale were told to move to higher ground. they picked up 2.5 inches of rain in three hours of time. clean-up crews are hard at work in new orleans clearing damage caused by a tornado this week. the twister packed 80 mile-per-hour winds and cut a half mile path of destruction through the city's seventh ward and the tremain neighborhood and it brought down trees and power lines and two people suffered injuries and the twister damaged five houses. a terrifying moments at a

>> sportsnencer christian is he with the latest on that. >> smiling, because of the weather and watching him in the old stomping ground. it looks like fun. live doppler 7 hd, mainly sunny skies but the low clouds are right up near the coastline so moving in overnight. statewide tomorrow, a warm day. highs of 92 in chico and yosemite, 107 in palm springs and 80 down south in los angeles. here in the bay area, relatively mild inland but cool -- breezy near the coast. highs near 60 degrees. upper 60s to low 70s around the bay. and low to mid-80s in the very warmest inland areas. but for the week ahead, we'll have a bit of a warm-up coming our way. we'll use liver as the indicator. tomorrow is the coolest day in the seven-day forecast period, especially inland but notice the gradual increase through the weekend and into early next week. tuesdays high up around 90 degrees in livermore and other inland locations before they taper off again later next week. a nice weekend overall.

we have a really heart-warming story for you out of the central valley. >> an image of a one-legged man working in the field for 16 year went viral and now his life changed in remarkable ways. >> here is reporter liz gonzalez. >> with every step, he is the picture of hope, perseverance, inspiration. he was working in the field picking oranges with just one leg. some donated to a go fund me site created by the rotary and so far it raised close to $10,000. a bank account has helped him cover living expenses. renee was among those eager to pitch in. >> i have to help. this is my heart and passion.
