phone, creating a fake i.d., and running up huge bills. good evening. thanks for joining us on this sunday. i'm tom llamas. we begin with breaking news. tragedy at a major american water park. the details just coming in. word of a child killed on the world's tallest water slide. you see it there. the park now closed through at least tomorrow. the investigation just under way. marci gonzalez with the latest. marci? >> reporter: today, a day at the water park turning tragic. >> we are saddened to share that a young boy died this afternoon. >> reporter: the boy's family with him at the time of the accident. the mark immediately closing down. investigators now working to figure out what went wrong on this giant water slide.

it's billed as the world's largest water slide, taller than the statue of liberty. this file video throwing the 168-foot plummet. riders reaching speeds of up to 45 miles an hour. once every rider climbs the 264 steps to the top, they hear this. >> there's a risk inherent to the activity. >> reporter: a two-page safety warning. abc news getting special access to the ride in 2014. floats flying off the ride in tests. originally, it was capable of sending riders up to 40 miles per hour down the slide, so fast, it had to be slowed down. tonight, park officials confirming to abc news, the park was inspected for weeks before it opened this summer.

we're told the park will be closed tomorrow. tom? >> thank you. now to the race for president. donald trump facing danger for a second straight week. new polls showing him losing ground to hillary clinton after a series of damaging headlines. trump, trying to claw back into the race. launching a new attack using clinton's own words against her. the abc news/"washington post" poll showing clinton extending her lead by eight points. 50% to 42%. trump's turmoil helping to boost numbers with one group in particular. devin dwyer, on the campaign trail tonight. >> reporter: down in the polls tonight, donald trump's trying a new weapon -- hillary clinton's own words. >> unstable hillary clinton. and you saw that, did you saw that where she basically short-circuited? >> reporter: trump pouncing on clinton's answer to a question about her e-mails. >> i may have short-circuited. and for that i will try to clarify.

[ zapping noise ] >> reporter: and on the stump. >> the people of this country don't want somebody that's going to short-circuit up here. >> reporter: going so far as to suggest his rival is losing her mind. >> this stuff is so amazing. it amazes me actually. honestly, i don't think she's all there. >> reporter: these latest attacks coming as clinton makes gains. our new poll showing her support from women at its highest level yet. and fewer voters viewing her unfavorably. the poll reveals serious concerns about trump. two-thirds say he has the wrong temperament. almost as many say he's unqualified and untrustworthy. on "this week," former acting cia director mike morrell said trump has already been manipulated by the russian president. vladimir putin has called trump "talented." >> from mr. trump's perspective, right, he simply heard putin compliment him.

he then responded by complimenting him. he never thought that he might be being played. >> reporter: a battle over mental qualifications for the presidency far from settled, as clinton tonight warns supporters about trump by e-mail. tonight. >> matt, thanks so much. the family of oscar pistorius fighting against headlines he tried to commit suicide. he was taken to the hospital after being found hurt in his prison cell today. authorities say he has injuries to his wrists. pistorius says it was not a suicide attempt. his brother claims he slipped in his cell. he's serving six years for killing his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. we move on to the midair takedown of an unruly passenger accused of attacking a crew member. forcing the pilot to divert to phoenix. here's eva pilgrim. >> reporter: this man in handcuffs after terrifying moments on this packed cross-country flight. >> i jumped on the guy. i restrained him. basically got his hands behind his back. >> reporter: 64-year-old jose de dios ucros taken down by a fellow passenger after witnesses say he attacked a flight attendant and tried to open the cabin door. the spirit flight headed from l.a. to florida, forced to make an emergency landing in phoenix.

moments later, police board the plane and arrest ucros, who they say appeared to be impaired. ucros, who is facing assault charges, is just the latest passenger arrested on a flight. >> sit down. enough! you don't put your hands on my flight attendant. >> reporter: an american airlines pilot taking down an unruly passenger in charlotte on monday after this -- the man slams into a flight attendant. several passengers fight to subdue the man in the red shirt, finally restraining him with tape and seat belts on a russian plane. and in june, two fighter jets escorting a delta flight to the ground after a passenger made threats against the plane. >> he was walking up and down the aisle, acting unusual, anxious, seemed very uncomfortable. wouldn't sit down. >> reporter: the flight attendant association tells abc news they are seeing more and more incidents of unruly passengers. the leading cause -- alcohol.

piece of filth that you are. >> reporter: police hopeful that dna evidence will lead to the person who attacked karina vetrano as she jogged alone tuesday in broad daylight, just blocks from her home. >> this woman put up a ferocious fight, right to the end. she was beaten quite severely. >> reporter: vetrano's father, finding her body. the heartbroken new york city firefighter, thanking investigators as they relentlessly search for evidence and witnesses that could lead to the killer. >> justice will be served. >> reporter: police say they don't believe vetrano knew her killer. there is now a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. tom? >> gloria, thank you. let's turn now to the extreme weather moving in on the south. heavy rain, flooded streets and strong winds in tampa today. turning worse as we head into the week. and tropical storm javier now forming off the west coast of mexico, closing in on land. let's get straight to rob marciano.

>> let's start with florida. it's going to be a multiday event. host of the heavy rain just offshore, but it's rotating in. and flood watches posted for cedar key. and could see four to six inches in the next 24 to 48 hours. then it drifts along the florida panhandle, and through friday, 8 to 12 inches of additional rainfall. so, a huge flood threat here. tropical storm javier, the moisture for this will get into the u.s., desert southwest. the southwest and southeast corners of this country under the gun this week. >> rob, thanks so much. tonight, a major headline from one of baseball's most polarizing players. yankee slugger alex rodriguez tearfully announcing his final days with the team. the struggling star will play his final game in the bronx on friday. adrienne bankert on the player fans either loved, or loved to hate. >> reporter: tonight alex rodriguez, counting down the

here's more about thetim and the investigation. >> reporter: 20-year-old calvin riley died in what friends and family are calling a random attack. he was shot to death while playing pokemon go at san francisco's aquatic park. >> to there was to confrontation, nothing said back and forth. just senseless. just came up and shot him in the back and ran away. >> john kirby is a close family friend and is speaking on behalf of the parent, who are too devastated to talk. >> a large group of people playing pokemon go, and calvin got ahead of his friend and kind of went around a corner. >> reporter: kirby said the pair noticed someone watching them. >> when the friend came around the corner he had heard a gunshot, saw his friend fall, and whoever did it ran away and possibly got a car. >> reporter: police are asking witnesses to call their tip line. >> a tragedy.
