>> the fact that they didn't bring charges against individuals here, i think, means they didn't have the evidence against them. it is a harder case to bring against individuals. >> reporter: now pg&e was found guilty of not keeping proper records of its maintenance program and not inspecting and testing those pipelines. in court, the u.s. attorney's office said pg&e had chosen profits over safety. now the san bruno explosion killed eight people and injured many more and destroyed 38 homes. now here is reaction today from the mayor of san bruno. >> we are very, very gratified that the jury found out over the last six plus weeks that we've known for a long time, that pg&e put money way ahead of safety. >> reporter: now pg&e issued a statement late this afternoon and they said, well, we are very much focused on the future, we will never forget the lessons of

the past. now, any and all fines will be paid by stakeholders and not pg&e customers. we'll have more at 6:00. i'm live from the federal building in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> thanks very much. and more information on the story. the explosion happened six years ago on september 9th, 2010. two years later in 2012, they agreed to pay the city $70 million in restitution. in 2014 the criminal case began when the utility was indicted for the charges related to today's ruling that we've been discussing. that same year the state puc proposed a $1.4 billion penalty for that blast. that penalty eventually became $1.6 billion. that is a record fine for a utility. the abc 7 i team has learn of arrested connected to highway shootings in the east bay. sources tell the team the fbi safe streets task force arrested more than 20 suspected gang

members in an operation last week and some of them may be responsible for the highway shootings along with other crim crimes, including guns, drugs and prostitution and attempted murder. details will be announced at a news conference tomorrow. it began last year with an investigation by concord police into increased gang violence in contra costa county. a battering ram, what a team of burglars used to break into a fisherman's wharf photo and video shop there morning. surveillance video shows a white van crashing into the store and you see the thieves attaching the battering ram to the back of the van and making the job that much easier. sergio quintana is live with the story. that is some video. >> reporter: it is pretty interesting. police say it is clear that those burglars were very well organized. we are surprised to learn from the shop owner that they have unfortunately been hit several times so far this year. we've also learned there is other shops across the city that

have also gotten repeatedly hit. san francisco police investigators say they've never seen this strategy before. this team of burglar as attached a pole to the white cargo van and used it as a battering ram to break into the store. how they got in is less of a concern to the store owner and staff. the number of times they've been burglarized is a bigger deal. >> this is not the first time. it has been like five or six times for the last six months. >> reporter: the burglars made off with thousands of dollars of photo and video equipment this time. the man he called to fix the broken glass door told me off camera he's been really busy the last six months. he's teams of technicians have been averaging five repair calls from commercial burglaries every week. in fact, one team was at a shop in hayes valley as well. it was broken into early on sunday morning, the second time in two months. the bike shop next door was also recently hit. >> the police response is very

slow. they are already overwhelmed with so much already. >> he feels helpless. the police still haven't found the people who stole thousands of dollars worth of items from their store. the san francisco police say their investigations take time. >> you have to understand, we are only working on what we could obtain at the scene of the crime to video surveillance have helpful. >> and witnesses could be important. during last night, a bicyclist rode by as they were ransacking the photo shop and officers would like to talk to that person. abc 7 news. police are looking for whoever broke into hercules middle school cafeteria and went on a joy ride on a golf cart. it scuffed up the floor and you could see the damage in the photos. the golf cart was secured with a wheel log but the vandal broke it off. the lock was found abandoned outside of the school. marine mammal rescuers just

told us a dolphins found stranded near the international airport is unlike to be alive. they were over the mammal over the airport marriott hotel this morning and this afternoon a rescuer was able to reach the dolphin for a possible rescue. this spaceys is really large and could look like a whale. the rescuers said it had not moved throughout the afternoon and was likely dead. a necropsy will determine the cause of death. and a twitter follower sent us this video of a dolphin swimming in circles, seemingly lost near sfo on saturday. now it is unclear if this mammal was the same one stranded today. but it was in the same general area. a popular restaurant owner facing eviction is getting remarkable support from the people in the community who are determined to fight back. the restaurant is at the richmond marina. the mayor claims that eviction is done in retaliation. leslie brinkley is live outside of the salute restaurant. leslie. >> reporter: dan, this is a

beloved italy restaurant in richmond. been here for 14 years. the owner is well-known in the community as as great philanthropi philanthropist. three days ago she got an eviction notice and now the community is rallying to save the restaurant. devoted diners wept and hugged and supporting the owner after hearing the shocking news she would be evicted from the water front spot. >> the little thing that -- 30 days notice to be -- to get out. pack and leave. >> reporter: the letter came from the property owner, the poe family which owns the company that claims a severe sewage leak is the restaurant for the eviction. >> we sent someone underneath and we took pictures and when i sent the pikes to mrs. poe, she called me immediately and said oh, my gosh, we have to shut this place down. this is terrible. >> reporter: but they say county health inspects twice in resect

weeks gave it a thumbs up to richmond residents rallied here today. >> the reason we are doing this here today is to try to find a way to save a richmond landmark. >> and the mayor accused the poe family of seeking retaliation against the city for losing an election that blocked them from developing more land here. >> the mayor said it is maybe retaliation and you are the victim of it. >> well, yes. i feel that way, yes. which is -- i don't deserve that. i am a good tenant. >> by phone, jackie poe called that accusation unsophisticated and the restaurant owner is a philanthropist who feeds 1500 at her restaurant every thanksgiving because she was once homeless herself. >> i feel i win because of all of this love. >> reporter: the last day here is set for september 8th. in richmond, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. oakland police officers are investigating a homicide at a home near the east mont town

center this afternoon. sky 7 hd over the scene an hour ago at 73 and fresno street. police say a woman was found shot to death at this location. you could see a large police presence in that area. officers are still on the scene right now as they investigate. police have not said whether they've made any arrests. around the same time, sky 7 hd flew over the after math of a collision between a car and cement truck on 98th avenue. the car was involved in a high-speed chase and the driver ran over an officer on international boulevard around 2:15 this afternoon. extent of injuries is not known. five females ranging in age from 3 to 32 were inside of the car. they've all been taken to the hospital. the suspect vehicle was reported stolen out of oakland. 83 trees in sonoma county are at risk of being chopped down. they line country club drive in the rohnert park. and wayne freedman is live in the park with the story.

wayne? >> reporter: dan, it is an unusual story. trees going down and nobody seems to be protesting. the line of trees is two miles long and been here longer than most residents have been alive and so has the residue of the trees. this stuff here, that is the problem. >> that is them, right there. >> reporter: kevin is talking about the small nuisance that after two decades has become a major pain. the little bit of leaves that lodge everywhere. >> would you like to estimate how many hours you've spent in 20 years. >> hundreds of hours. >> they come from locust trees along country club drive. the tree might have seemed like a good idea when a developer planted them 25 years ago and now they are old and dying and shedding and when the city council votes to replace them tonight they will be decidedly noncontroversial. >> they are unhealthy and not as full and lush as we want trees to be in that area and so we think that there is a better option out there. >> reporter: without a

a fire in southern california has exploded to 7,000 acres and is prompting new evacuations. the so-called pilot fire is burning in san bernardino county. our sister station in l.a. has the story. >> reporter: hundreds of firefighters are battling the pilot fire burp burning in the san bernardino mountains and the wildfire consuming more than 7,000 acres and sending large plumes of smoke into the area. >> not real crazy about breathing all of that smoke. but wife is in town in a place where she has asthma and stuff. >> reporter: drift smoke causing

some concern for the high desert community. the air quality so bad both hisperia and apple valley unified school districts canceled classes. >> it is pure smoke. it is very bad and you could barely breathe and it is black smoke every time the wind starts building up, the next day is just blows right over us. >> reporter: firefighters making some progress battling the flames by laying down and improving containment lines in the burn areas. by air, planes dropping fire retand ant along the ridgelines but the wind and bone-dry brush continues to be problematic. >> we recognize with the wind conditions it could push embers across the fire line so we are keeping a close eye on that. >> reporter: residents in the evacuation hold -- are in a holding pattern and they are ready to go at a moment's notice. 5300 homes are under voluntary and mandatory evacuation orders. laura and her husband left their home on monday afternoon. but came back today to retrieve

some items they left behind. >> it is very nerve-wracking. you have to cancel. we had to cancel events to go down the hill. things go through your mind, what do you do now. >> the couple's home within striking distance of the fire is surrounded by fire retardant. both are thankful to the men and women trying to protect their home. >> you have to give 100% to the fire department because he know what, they are really marauders, up there helping other people. >> reporter: the wind will continue to be a factor for firefighters as they try to gain the upper hand in this fire. near the community of hesperia, abc 7 news. the soberanes fire still growing tonight. here is the latest view from space provided by nasa. you could see the smoke mixed in with the coastal low clouds and the fog. cal fire said the fire tore through another 6,000 acres overnight and has now burned more than 67,000 acres

destroying 57 homes in the process. the blaze started july 22nd with an illegal campfire at a state park. it is 50% contained. full containment is not expected until the end of the month. cal train received a green light to move forward with plans to electrify the line between san francisco and the south bay. cal train currently used diesel powertrains and an extra $113 million will come from california high-speed rail authority. plans call for high speed bullet trains to share cal trains right away. the city of san mateo will get money to eliminate crossings that will help improve safety along the corridor. >> it is a huge opportunity for the peninsula to both improve an already overtaxed service in the peninsula quarter and cal train serves more than 60,000 riders a day right now and on the way to 100,000 riders. and the system will allow cal trains commuter to increase capacity. >> the electric trains produce less greenhouse gases than diesel trains. a ribbon-cutting ceremony

held this morning for the first of seven different construction projects to alleviate congestion along the interstate 80, 680 highway interchange. the first phase is a connector bridge from westbound 80 to 12. and a new green valley road overcrossing will be built and the remaining six planned projects will be done when funding is available. new technology could prevent hot car deaths. >> and michael finney is testing it out. >> this statistic is horrifying and it is hard to believe that almost 40 children die of heat stroke inside of vehicles every year. now there is new technology designed to prevent those tragedies and consumer reports just tested it. even when the temperature outside is 70 degrees, the temperature in a car could quickly heat to over 120 degrees. since 2010, more than 220 children have died of heat stroke after being trapped

inside of vehicles. that according to kids in cars.org. consumer reports evaluated new technology built into this infant car seat that may help. it is called sensor safe and designed to chime as soon as the car is turned off, if a child is still buckled in the seat. the smart clip is activated when it is buckled and the car is in motion. it communicated with a wireless receiver you plug directly into the on board diagnostic port. >> if your car is model year 2008 or newer, the standard receiver will work. but if you have a hybrid or stops ant starts when idling, then you need to get the alternate. >> it worked in most vehicles, but not all. >> the sensor safe technology isn't perfect yet. but it shows the most promise. we believe that the best reminder of technology is one that is integrated into your vehicle or into your child seat

wedroad city and menlo park. 78 in mountain view. 72 in san mateo. 58 and cool in pacific a. daly city with the clouds lingering and 66 in downtown san francisco north bay 50s at the beaches but 90s around ukiah and cloverdale and 75 in san rafael, 74 in vallejo. a mild day in the east bay. sunny and 71 oakland. 77 fremont. 88 in livermore. 90 in antioch. 87 in walnut creek. but believe it or not the temperatures will slip a few degrees for the wednesday. and here is a look at temperature trend. livermore will be right at average tomorrow. but we will notice those temperatures coming up thursday, friday, low 90s. we'll bumping up to the mid-90s on saturday and off and on through monday. so if you don't like the hot weather, santa cruz might be your place and that is what people are doing, enjoying the beach. the next three days, here is what you could expect. low to mid-70s in the afternoon, morning low clouds and fog giving way to sun and it is

going to be a nice pattern. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. sunny for bay and inland for wednesday, upper 50s to low 90s. it is a steady pattern for thursday and then the temperatures will rise. 94 to 96 degrees between friday and really tuesday inland. low 60s at our beaches. so we'll go with the hot weather inland. but it is not going to be hot everywhere. so i know there are people who live in san francisco or on the peninsula who really like the low clouds an the fog, which i do see looking north. they'll be around. so not to worry. not too hot there. >> we're not worried. thank you. a retired emergency room physician wants a hospital in marin county to be the first to allow patients to openly use medical marijuana. >> this dr. larry bedard serves on the board that oversees marin general hospital in greenbrae and provide it could help when it comes to dealing with pain. they report that hospital managers are considering the pro
