abc7 news begins with breaking news. >> good morning, i am regular. >> a it is wednesday, august 10. we want to go back to breaking news we have tracked this morning. a slow speed chase. >> it is going through oakland and the east bay and jessica is looking at this. jessica? >> that is right c.h.p. is following a driver who has led them on a slow speed chase for several hours, and at one point going the wrong way and hit another vehicle, the other person is okay. he was heading eastbound on highway 24, and at last check, he stopped for a moment near the

tunnel. we got word that he is on city streets right new on surface streets. this is video from earlier you can see the car driving along on the highway, and if you watch, the video we have, you can see that police are keeping a very far distance from the black four-door sedan. they are being cautious. the chase started in the peninsula in menlo park and they have not said why they are following this person. look at this other video we have you can see the driver holding something outside of his car and it looks to be a metal object. we watched as he got off the freeway at one point in oakland earlier and caused one accident as i mentioned, and he got back on to the freeway headed now through the east bay and we are watching this closely in the newsroom with a crew on way to the scene in the area and will bring you updates as they happen. >> now, over to alexis. how is it affecting things this

morning? >> police are holding track back obviously foreign's safety and going very slow if you happen to be caught behind the driver. an update to what you just learned, southbound oakland side of the caldecott tunnel got moving a few minutes ago again, through the berkeley area, and we are hearing now the driver got on to town until road which is 13 in berkeley. it look like they are holding track ban on the web side of 13. so, continuing to keep a close eye on it. the good news is this is the only major issue and we do not have any other blocking incidents. meteorologist mike nicco has a look at our wednesday forecast half way through the work week. >> happy hump day, good morning, everyone, no blocking clouds. we are seeing a lot of the sky already this morning, so quick sunshine, temperatures are 48 to 58 if you are headed out now through 7:00, and 57 at the coast, and the clouds are more stubborn, to 78 underland and a

dip in temperatures with the sea breeze offsetting the sunshine and we will be 58 at the cost to 8 inland at. >> obviously we have a developing issue in the east bay, and, now be another one in the south bay. months of unsolved shootings in san jose are leading to this: police asking for your help. someone is firing at cars on the same stretch of road and so far has gotten away with it. matt keller is in south san jose. matt? >> good morning, reggie, this is terrifying for the neighbor, someone is shooting at cars during the early only hours, and police have yet to catch up with the shooter. the latest one took place this past friday and that was august 5, following another shooting on august 4, on thursday, ten shootings have taken place since may and mostly on this road at monterey. in eight of shootings only the vehicle was hit by a bullet but june 2nd the driver was grazed by a bullet and early july, a woman was hit by slap knoll. police and neighbors are

obviously concerned, and officers have canvassed the area and handed out fliers help. they are collecting evidence and analyzing the data in hopes of finding shooter, c.h.p. is also investigating one of the incidents, and center police are also patrolling the area. >> happening today the f.b.i. will have more detail on arrests , they think are linked to highway shootings in the east bay, sources tell abc team that agents arrested gang members in an operation last week. some may have been responsible for the highway shootings, along with other crimes including drugs and guns and prostitution and attempted murder. the operation began last year with an an ainvestigation interest increased gang violence in the county. >> san bruno will hold a news conference after the verdict in the deadly pipeline explosion.

pg&e found guilty of six of the 12 charges, including obstructing investigators. that is following the pipeline blast of 2010. eight people died. 38 homes were destroyed. the verdicts mean pg&e is going to have to pay a $3 million fine. that is a fraction of the $562 million the government originally asked for. the next phrase of the trial is in october. the news conference is at 10:00 a.m. outside san bruno city hall. developing in us in lake county some people's numbers and property were rattled after a moderate earthquake shook the region, a 5.1 earthquake hit before 8:00 people last night. the epicenter is believed 50 miles from sonoma county and 85 miles from sacramento, along the bartlett springs fault. it was felt as far inland as chico and as far out to the coast as fort bragg. four more after shocks hit after

the initial earthquake between 2.6 and 3.0. two weeks until the start of the any school year parents of scotts valley high school are weary of the handling of sexual harassment case, express concern of a 15-year old boy at the school who wrote a rape fantasy letter threatening specific girls and teachers, the student has been relocated to another school. participates say there is a lack of communication between them and the school administration. they say the school did not do enough to protect the students. >> police are hooking for a suspect who shot a volunteer look for a missing hiker last night in novato at the state park. the victim was with two others volunteering to help find the hiker and was shot. he was treated but this is no word on in the hiker has been found. >> this morning, bart officials say commuters should expect to be riding in a new fleet in five years. that is according to the "san francisco chronicle," introduction of the new cars was pushed back by give months

because they need to modify firing. officials say this is also a problem with equipment that powers the light, heating, air conditioning and part of the breaking system. the first rail cars are not available until may of next year, and bart plans to put ten new test cars interest service by the end of the year. >> and now the most up. story is the traffic alert in the east bay. that is tough to keep track of although it is slow speed pursuit. we confirmed with c.h.p. that the driver was on tunnel road, 13 in the berkeley area. can you see i have this on the traffic map. all traffic on 24 eastbound was stopped before the tunnel. the driver stopped and new is move again at 14 to 15 miles per hour on 13. in the berkeley direction. i am seeing a little bit of red on the traffic flows and they are holding the track behind the slow speed pursuit, so you could end up being caught in this.

los altos, petaluma, and all the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> a story from baghdad is horrifying. an electrical fire broke out at a hospital there and 11 newborn babies died. iraq health ministry said it happened last night at the maternity ward in western baghdad. it is still early. it may have been due to faulty wiring. a san francisco paramedic accused of setting off an explosive faces more charges. he faced charges after a bomb went off outside his neighbor's home last week. police re-arrested him yesterday on additional counts including attempted arson. police believe that the explosion damaged the planter box on the street, and they say explosives were discovered during a certain of his home. >> this is more concern of proposition 64 legalizing

[ inaudible ] >> officials believe the caller who never last his name is the man would shot and killed a 20 -year-old thomas leaving a party in the neighborhood early on sunday. [ inaudible ] >> police say the 39-year-old chad cameron fired a shotgun from inside his garage around 12:30 a.m. hitting thomas who was just passing by the mailbox on his way back to the car. miles per hour at continue machines ago when we last updated you. we hear from c.h.p. that the suspect is possible on bay forest drive just off to the side of 24 here and back in the residential area so i believe it is this little windy and steep road right there, and, still, on the move, so if you are caught behind this person there is a large police presence behind you and they are holding track back. on top of that we have had a quiet morning and i wanted to give you heads up in the south bay, southbound 880, before coleman avenue we have reports of a large piece of concrete in the lane and at least one vehicle hit that so we do have emergency response on the scene but i am not sure in it is cleared or not. i will have an update coming up in a few minutes. mike knack has a look at wednesday forecast. >> good morning, i will show you how quiet the wealth is, mid-to-upper 50s until oakland at 60 degrees, and we have upper

abc7 news begins with breaking news. >> we have breaking news from oakland. a driver just taken into custody after a slow speed pursuit. it stretched from one end of the bay to the other. >> i am reggie aqui. >> i am natasha zouves. it is wednesday, august 10th. we will go straight to our reporter, live at the end of the chase in the oakland hills. tiffany? >> good morning, natasha, and reggie, i will step outside the picture so you can get a better look at suspect now in custody. he has been speaking with some of the investigators and mainly incoherent with battling and ambulance just arrived here on the scene in the past 90 seconds and you can see he is being strapped on to the stretcher and they are going to check him out. again as i said he is incoherent so they are going to look to see in any druze or alcohol was involved in the hours long pursuit. now, i want to take you over

beyond the ambulance and you can see this is the car that has been at the heart of the pursuit all cross the bay area, and as we have reported all morning, it begans hours ago in menlo park and ended in oakland hills. take a look at this rim. the tire is warn down i have to tell you about the smell, burning rubber, strong smell in the air. the rest of the car is in bad shape with the windows buffed up, and investigators have been going through the car and searching it as the suspect was taken into custody. you can see what it looks like. what i have heard from sources is that it has been typical what they no one, with no specifics. we do expect an update from the sergeant here at the scene soon and i will take you to the scene with the suspect being load on the ambulance. again, you can see he is awake,

he is talking, he is moving, and we do not know at this point why he began this chase. or what led him to continue the chase at slow speeds for the past several hours. the good news is that it has safely helped in oakland hills with half a dozen different c.h.p. officers and k-9 unit from the county, and a first truck was also here on the scene and the ambulance, of course, with a lot to be learned. for commuters, the chase has ended, the streets are cheered, and, again, the suspect who has been leading the stores on the hours long pursuit, is safely in custody. that is the update. we will learn much more about what was in the car and the driver and, of course, the

investigation as it continues. >> thank you for that report. interesting to see this playing owe. there are wild moments on the chase. now, over to alexis. can you show us where this went? >> yes, i will explain it, it was all over. started at menlo park and across the san mateo bridge, and then, all over oakland, up and down 880, both directions, on to the surface streets and then it ended up in the berkeley area, as well, so we saw the suspect on 24, and branchly got on to 13, and then off into the surface streets on to the drive and over to bay forest drive and tunnel road where tiffany was, showing us, where the chase ended. seeing the tires you can understand why it was only 15-

to 20-miles per hour. just a big relief for the commuters heat was going the wrong way on 880 at one point so it was a dangerous situation. jessica will have more information. he hit a couple of videos at one point but it sounds like no one was seriously injured. roof the streets now with no residual delays. at one point on 880 and 24 and 13 we had traffic that was heavy because police were holding the traffic back. it was slow. it was dangerous. we we will have more ahead. >> there were strange moms, something that looked like a sword dangling from the window. >> jessica has been watching the video in the newsroom. >> question bizarre moments. i went to show you new video we got of the suspect hitting another driver, you can see in the area of embarcardero in oakland, the car turned the corner and it has the flashers

around the corner and then we do not see the crash but we have the aftermath, you can see the woman get out of her vehicle after her car flipped the wrong we on the street. she gets back in, police are coming over to talk to her and make sure everything is okay. she was just fine. show was walking. and getting out of vehicle. we showed you this earlier, and i want to show you again a strange moment when the driver is holding something out of the vehicle and it looks to be something metal lick a sword and we watched as he got east freeway at one point, and as i mentioned, the one accident, the driver is okay, and had several pauses along the way, and he was going very slow throughout the morning, but we did watch him stop and few times and keep going and that chase now is over and that is good news. certainly, some strange and bizarre moments on the chase that has lasted all morning.

police are searching nor whoever shot and killed a woman visiting relatives. officers are searching oakland neighborhood for a suspect yesterday afternoon on fresno street. neighbors her a dozen gunshots. the victim is 24-year-old woman. >> show was a beautiful, beautiful spirit. a beautiful spirit. everyone loved her. a friend of mine's shown got killed and i told my kids hope i never have for go through that pain and here i am...a week there has been gang violence before, and 17 year old christopher johnny was gunned down in the same street in 2010. her family is looking for family and they urge anyone with information to come forward. >> in lake county power is become on after two wildfires forced them to evacuate, and one home is destroyed, near highway

53 and the fires are burning half a mile of each other. according to the press democrat the bigger fire was at 45 acres and thousand is 70s% contained. the other fire scorched 25 acres . residents returned home last night at 10:00 >> the pilot fire is 7,700 acres and threatening thousands of homes and firsting schools to close. 5,000 homes are under voluntary and mandatory evacuations, the fire started on sunday afternoon. it quickly video with winds up to 25 miles per hour. no word on what sparked the fire. right new it is 6% contained. >> now, after the traffic alert, it is all over. >> a big sigh of relief as commuters are, too, a dangerous situation. it happened for 2 1/2 hours this morning, all over the east bay, the driver is custody now and we

her the report from tiffany at the scene and it ended right at the caldecott tunnel, at tunnel road where we have the police scene. obviously this is an extensive investigation, but, fortunately, it sounds live much is okay and there were a few minor crashes, but off the streets now, we do not have anything else major this morning, just a quick note, for the south bay, though are work on getting debris off of southbound 880 before coleman avenue, and it was reported that it was a huge roll of foam or maybe a large bit of concrete, one vehicle hit that and though are off on the shoulder. there could be debris in the road. we will look at our drive time in a few minutes but, first, to mike nicco and the wednesday forecast. i saw a broom on the highway the other day. >> not good. >> i got a crack in my car. >> now the soberanes fire, the smoke blowing away from us

firefighters are waking up to 64 in the hills to 36% humidity. the winds are blowing north to south and in the afternoon hours the winds will come from the south and that will set bring possible poor air quality to us and we are at moderate levels but if we could see the change into friday and saturday i will keep an eye out. a slight dip from 1-3 degrees cool ever than yesterday and close to average but we will see what happened tomorrow. it will be cooler around the bay, and, still, 80s and 90's inland, 60 and 70s around the bay and you can see warming on friday especially inland with low-to-upper 90s in the east bay and mid-80s in the south bay and 60s and 70s an the bay. the rest of the weekend forecast is. coming up next. >> the city of san jose will see a memorial outside police headquarters honoring fallen officers approaching the project that is on west mission street
