live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> now at 11:00 a mall mystery. a body discovered at a popular shopping center. abc7 news has learned where exactly that body turned up. >> the discovery was made this morning in a stairwell in the westfield shopping center. >> that's near the busy mission street corridor. katie is live at police headquarters with the story. katie? >> dan and ama. it was a source at the scene who told me the victim was found in a stairwell. employees say it is primarily an exit. but sometimes they use it or sneak into it. it has been 13 hours since the body was discovered and police are not revealing how the man was killed. around 10:15 in the morning shortly after the westfield mall opened the mall became a

crime scene. >> when officers arrived at the scene and called the medical examiner. they ruled it as a homicide. >> he saw the police tape when he arrived for work. >> there were no real details of what happened so that was freaky. >> the body of a man in his 30s was found at the mall. the source at the scene said the victim was in this stairwell near the back entrance to bloomingdales. >> the mall is full of cameras everywhere and not just the mall, but other businesses in the area. >> thomas o'neil is an elevator contractor. he was working at the building next door when the body was next door. he works in this area all the time. >> it is a very busy area, and there is a lot of traffic. it would be odd to see anything unfortunate going on. >> mall employees are surprised and rattled.

>> police will not identify the man until the family is notified. they are asking anyone with any information to come forward. >> police urgently need your help to find a missing girl. 15-year-old deanna has not been heard from since saturday night. detectives say the case is unusual. that's because she does president have a cell phone or money and she hasn't been active on social media. if you see this young woman you are urged to call local police immediately. >> the district attorney's office needs the public's help as well this time to find a mother and her baby son. they took off with her son soon after losing custody. lilian kim is live at the d.a.'s office with this story.

>> the baby may need medical help which is why they are desperately trying to find him and his mother. >> they are dealing with parental child abduction. it is due to a serious health condition. >> we don't know the extent of the medical condition because she hasn't finished those tests in that regard. so we have reason to believe that there is something serious going on with him but we don't know because she has abducted her child. >> the d.a.'s office says she took off with her son after the court informed her that family child services was taking custody of the child. they were looking for them ever since and now they are turning to the public for help. they have many distinguishing features including facial piercings and many tattoo including a teddy bear on her left bicep. she may also be driving a hyundai with the license plate number 6bxn752.

>> she has ties to san jose. she is mobile. we know she can move around. but we have reason to believe she is in santa clara county. i. >> the d.a.'s office won't say why purr nell lost custody in the first place but records indicate she has been in trouble with the law twice in the last 10 years. lilian kim, abc7 news. there is a warning for pokemon go players. be aware of your surroundings. in berkeley three people had their phones stolen while playing the popular game. police don't know if the robberies are related. authorities say the robbers jumped the victims while they were pre occupied. today san francisco announced the arrest of this man in connection with the pokemon go robbery in the mission. police say evans grabbed the cell phone of a pokemon go player at 17th street last thursday. the 23-year-old was booked for felony strong arm robbery, terrorist threats and narcotics charges.

there are active warrant against him in south san francisco and santa clara and marin county. 70 suks thousand acres burned and four people killed. that's the toll of last year's valley fire. they burned napa county. abc7 news reporter jonathon bloom has the details from middletown. >> the fires consume evidence. >> but they leave some behind. enough to determine that this is where the valley fire began in the town of cobb. the owner installed a new hot tub and admits he tried to do the wiring himself. >> there were electrical conduits outside and that heated up and ignited the grass. >> they say it sparked a fire that spread so rapidly that four firefighters were seriously injured in the first few hours. four others lost their lives in the fire as it tore through the hills destroying about

1300 homes. >> at the same time it will be turned over to my legal staff to determine whether or not a crime has been committed. >> the district attorney has a month to file misdemeanor charges up to two years if the charge is a felony. causing a fire no matter how devastating is not automatically a crime. >> criminal laws beyond negligence. there is gross negligence or recklessness to constitute the crime. >> among the possible charges doing the electrical work without a permit. >> there is a permit required for electrical installation. to our knowledge we are unable to locate or identify a permit on file. >> investigators zeroed in on the home soon after the fire started. but they had to be sure checking out hundreds of leads that incorrectly blamed the fire on everything from arson to drug labs. >> it has taken a longtime for good reason. they wanted to make sure they got it right. >> jonathon bloom, abc7 news. >> firefighters need your help to recover some missing equipment they used on the front lines against the massive wildfire in monterey

county. they are looking for fire hoses and pumps and gas cans. they killed one person and de -- destroyed 57 homes. full containment is not expected until the end of the month. an illegal campfire sparked the fire. smoke from the fire lead to a spare the air alert in the bay area. let's check in with sandhya patel. live doppler 7hd. sandhya? >> ama, a change in the wind direction coming up. that's what will bring the smoke to the bay area. so take a look at our wind forecast. the winds are going to come more out of the south and that will draw in the smoke to the south bay. and parts of the east bay. air quality will be poor. moderate for the rest of the bay area. we have a spare the air alert for your thursday. it is the smoke from the fire along with the smog. the smog from the east bay hills camera as we look toward the mountain, you can see the redish hue that's the smoke

and we will see more of it. this is what you will see in the morning. fog. i will let you know when the fog will disappear at least temporarily and it will heat up around here. dan? >> thank you so much. san bruno police are warning people to keep their homes locked after a home break in. this is a sketch of the man police believe went through an unlocked sliding door of a home on tuesday afternoon. the man punched the victim trying to escape. he is described as hispanic and a heavy build. there you can see the sketch. if you think you have seen him or have available information call san bruno police. >> former oakland a's slugger jose can say co is praising pittsburgh police after they found baseball bats stolen from his car. police arrested these two men this morning and are accused of breaking into his suv parked outside the hampton inn. they saw it happen on live surveillance footage.

here is a look at the time lapse from the east bay hills camera. you can see why everyone is not dealing with the hot summer weather. it is just a beautiful time lapse as the marine layer is pushing in over the hills. it is 2,000 feet deep and that's why it progressed into the bay and also into the north bay on our radar. visibility is low. half moon bay is just over a mile now so watch out for that fog especially during the morning commute. it is hard to see the top of the eastern span of the bay bridge due to that fog. the temperatures are 58 in san jose and it is 54 in half moon bay. from our sfo camera you can see the marine layer here and the temperatures are in the low 50s and santa rosa. 58 in napa and 63 livermore. a live look from our abc7 news exploratorium camera. we will go with areas of fog

tonight. hazy tomorrow with a spare the air alert and we are looking at the stretch of hot days friday through next wednesday. this i% just a reminder that we are not done with summer yet. tomorrow morning look for areas of dense fog. when you get going you might take a little longer to get to where you need to go. hazy sunshine inland. temperatures in the 50s to 60s. and then it is in the low 90s and upper 50s for your afternoon hours. today's temperatures dropped a few degrees and it is breezy and cooler. mid50s to the mid70s. the morning starts off cool enough to where you will need the extra layer with the fog. here is the hour by hour forecast. fog is not only near the coast, but around the bay at 5:00 a.m. as the commute gets going the fog will peel away at 10:00 a.m. it sits there near the coast and it is going to hang around well into the afternoon. bay and inland you will be

enjoying the sun. here is a look for the highs. 84 san jose and hazy skies gilroy and 85 degrees. 65 in santa cruz. the -- 70 suks in redwood city and >> 76 in red -- redwood city. the fog will linger in daly city and 58 degrees. 76 vallejo and 80 in santa rosa. 78 in newark. head inland and it is going to be hazy and warm. ninety in livermore. between tomorrow night and the next it is the peak of the perseid meteor shower. look northeast between the constellation persieus. and the best view is away from the fog that will be around near the coast and the bay. here is a look at the seven-day forecast.
