live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> now at 11:00, a possible pet poisoning. tonight park rangers in the south bay believe someone tried to taint a water source used by animals. good evening and thank you for join us. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. suspicious tablets were discovered in a water trough at santa teresa park in san jose. >> lisa amin gulezian is live with the story tonight. >> park users are calling this thing very disturbing. the three tablets are about the size of my cell phone, and they were found dissolving inside of a water trough. a park maintenance workers found these three white bars floating and dissolving in the water trough off the coraline trail. there was a strong chemical odor coming from the water, which is

leading park officials to think it may have been rat poison. the suspicious substance is now being tested. >> we cleared it out and made all the water clear and everything. so that when cattle come through and dogs and everything, it's all clear to drink out of. >> reporter: the trough is used by dogs, birds, cattle, just about any animal in the area. now sheriff's deputies and park rangers will have extra patrols out. flyers will be posted on all bulletin boards warning park users to be on alert near water source just in case. >> swims in water and drinks anything that is coming. so he would probably get sick and have no idea what is going on with him. >> reporter: others find the discovery of the suspicious tablets infuriating. >> we come out to enjoy the nature and to get him some exercise. and the fact that someone would do something like that is kind of disgusting. >> it's worrisome in many ways, just having such people around first of all. but of course for the animals here, so many wonderful wild animals here. >> reporter: investigators have

no leads. in san jose, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. police swarmed an oakland neighborhood east of lake merritt this afternoon when gunshots were fired from inside a house. sky 7 hd shows you the large police response at 70 avenue and east 21st street. it took about 30 minutes for the suspected shooter to come out of the house and surrender. you can see him walking backwards there towards police. they took him immediately. police recovered two guns. no one was hurt. tonight friends, family, and classmates gathered to say goodbye to the popular baseball player who was shot and killed in san francisco while playing pokemon go. 20-year-old calvin riley was killed saturday at aquatic park. katie marzullo has the emotional farewell. >> dan, it really was a heartbreaking scene out here. hundreds of people, dozens of young men in jerseys and letterman's jackets, everyone shocked and devastated that calvin riley is gone.

the line stretched down the block. tearful members of a close community waiting to attend the memorial service for calvin riley. >> he was a generally caring people. he defines the community. >> reporter: calvin graduated from serra high school last year. a basketball teammate remembers tryouts freshman year. it was shirts versus skins, and he says calvin dove on to the court shirtless to make a play. >> we're pretty sure that's why he made the team. he had more heart than a bunch of cocky freshmen. >> reporter: calvin was playing baseball this summer, heading into his sophomore year in stockton. he was shot and killed at aquatic park saturday night while playing pokemon go. police have no suspects. >> my hope is that the individual or individuals responsible for this do the right thing and turn themselves in. >> reporter: u.s. park police are investigating the shooting. captain jerry marshall attended the memorial service. >> i know that i told the father tonight we're going to do everything in our power to bring

the folks to justice. >> reporter: police are following up on leads and asking the public to keep the tips coming. the riley family is grateful for the community's help and support. >> we don't want this to be something that is on the news for a week and forgotten. we want justice for calvin. >> calvin's funeral is friday morning, also at st. gregory's church. katie marzullo, abc 7 news. >> one more note before we move on about pokemon go there is a new effort to keep sex offenders from luring young pokemon go players to their homes. the popular game has a feature that allows players to set up a lure that brings other players to a spot where they can catch pokemon. some of those lures have popped up at sex offenders' houses. state lawmakers are working to prevent sex offenders from playing pokemon go or similar type games. we have new details tonight on a man found dead in a stairwell at the westfield shopping center in san francisco. today abc 7 confirmed the victim

was frank galicia. his brother told us the 28-year-old moved here from boston for what he called a dream job and hoped to open his own restaurant one day. he can't think of anyone who would want to hurt the man he knew as a free spirit. >> he was robbed of his life over something i'm sure was petty. >> police have ruled galicia's death a homicide. so far they haven't made any arrests or released a cause of death. we also have new details on a former minor league baseball pitcher and senior softball player accused of killing his wife. sky 7 hd was over the couple's home in black hawk. on sunday he struck his wife linda marie 20 times in the head with a hammer. he is now in jail. in santa clara county, a 10-month-old boy who has been missing for nearly a month is safe tonight. today the district attorney's office announced that they have

located daveon doe. the d.a. says she took off with the baby on july 9th after she was told child services was going to take custody of her son. purnell has been in trouble with the law at least twice in the last decade. the massive soberanes fire is 55% contained. flames have killed one person and destroyed 57 homes. full containment is not expected until the end of the month, but again, it didn't spread today. an illegal campfire sparked this devastating blaze. smoke from the soberanes fire will once again be a problem in the bay area tomorrow. here is meteorologist sandhya patel on live doppler 7 hd. sandhya? >> yeah, dan. we already saw the layers of smoke from the soberanes fire in san jose. take a look for yourself. this is from the east bay hills camera. the haze creating that reddish sunset tonight. and we are going to see a repeat

jose, and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. >> all right. in just about 90 minutes or so, look up. because the annual perseid meteor shower is expected to just light up the bay area sky. >> and in the east bay, the science center is hosting a viewing party, which is where we find abc 7 reporter tiffany wilson with what is happening right now. hi, tiffany. >> hi, dan and ama. technically the viewing party doesn't begin until 1:00 a.m. but they are so excited to see the spectacle because tonight is supposed to be the best show in more than a decade. tiny streaks of light with a massive amount of history. >> these are made up of material that was part of the original solar nebule. some are just the size of a grain of sand. >> as they enter the atmosphere that. >> burn up. >> this year's perseid meteor shower is considered an outburst

or exceptional shower with twice as many shooting stars. we have jupiter to thank for the extra special is celestial show. >> every 12 years, jupiter comes around and goes underneath the path of the comet, the path of the stream of particles. gives it a little gravitational tug. and that causes two years later the outburst that we see. >> in the bay area, if you look up tonight, you could see as many as 100 an hour, 200 if you live somewhere away from city lights. >> the best way to see it is to first of all get away from the fog. you want to be able to see the sky. try to find a dark location. and then look up high to the northeast. that's where all these meteors will seem to be coming from. >> astronomer gerald mckeague began says nights like tonight are important. >> the earth is part of a much bigger universe. this is a way of reminding us. >> all you need to do is simply

look up and wait. now the best hours are supposed to be between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. however, we have already seen several beautiful shooting stars. live in oakland, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> pretty spectacular. thanks, tiffany. new tonight, a strong earthquake shook the pacific ocean. the magnitude 7.2 quake hit near the island nations of vanuatu and new caledonia around 1:00 a.m. local time. the usgs report there's is no threat of a tsunami. this area '70s the ring of fire where of course earthquakes are very common. macy's announced today it will be closing 100 stores next year. that's about 15% of its stores. it's not saying which ones will be closed. macy's operates 23 department and furniture stores. they it will move the men's offerings to the flagship store on o'farrell street across the street. san jose is now the most expensive metro market for homes in the country. according to a new report by the

national association of realtors, the median home price in san jose is slightly more than a million dollars. that's the highest ever for a metro area. >> our prices have gone up because there is very little property in the lower price points available. >> abc 7 news was in the city's almaden valley neighborhood today. we talked with one happy couple who brought their home for around 300,000 around 20 years ago and just sold it for market value. >> i never thought we would make money with our house. >> their nabts brought their home 45 years ago for $41,000. >> that turned out to be a pretty good investment. closed since 9/11, bart tonight is considering reopening the underground rest rooms. at the meeting they discussed redesigning and remodeling the bathrooms at the powell station and 19th street. unlike the old rest rooms, these would not be single bathrooms. instead they would have separate

stall, and the sink would be on the outside. >> the idea is to open that space up and make it safe. and then see if that will work for the rest of the system. >> if approved by the bart board this fall, the bathrooms would not open until at least late next year. if the pilot program is successful, bart might expand the project to include all underground stations. in berkeley, a deer jumped into a pool and interrupted a children's swimming lesson today. jesse johnson showed this picture showing two pool employees putting life preservers on the deer at king park this morning. they were able to keep the animal from swimming up to the children. several 3 to 6-year-olds were in the pool at the time. everyone safely cleared out. >> our staff, who are trained in dealing with lots of emergencies, but never a deer in a pool. the staff kind of gently led the deer to the pool steps. and the little deer sprung out of the pool and ran into the bushes. >> police think the animal must have hopped the fence to get into the pool deck. it looked pretty nice.

>> a warm day. maybe it wanted to work on its backstroke. let's talk about the weather forecast. >> meteorologist sandhya patel is here. >> you might just want to hit the pool the next few days, especially if you live inland. it is going to get hot. right now i do want to show you what is ahead, which is just in a short time here, the perseid meteor shower will be peeking between midnight and dawn is the best time to view. and we are looking at up to 200 meteors per hour. normally we could see up to 100 an hour. and conditions are looking favorable for our inland areas where we're looking at clear skies. good viewing after midnight here. but along the coast and around the bay, it will be poor in some spots. i'll explain here as you take a look at live doppler 7 hd. notice the gaps in the fog here. this is why i think some of you near the coast will actually get a pretty good show as well, if you haven't looked outside yet. the marine layer is compressing. so it's not quite as extensive as it has been. a sign of things to come. it is going to get warmer. and speaking of warmth, look at

the ocean temperatures right now. near 60 degrees. these interest buoys san francisco, half moon bay. if you're wondering why it's been feeling so muggy at night sometimes, this is part of the reason. that's why tomorrow morning it's not going get very cold near the coast. mid-50s san francisco, half moon bay, inland areas in the north bay valleys, some of our cooler spots in the low 50s. you'll see the fog around near parts of the bay and along the coast. a murky view as we look toward downtown oakland. 57 san francisco. 59 in oakland. 63 right now in san jose. and it is in the mid 50s in half moon bay. golden gate camera giving you a little bit of a view of the morning commute. low visibility at times. so be aware of that. 54 in santa rosa. livermore 66 degrees. and a live look from our kgo roof camera. you notice the marine layer. it is stacked up. but not as dense. foggy near the beaches and bay in the mornings. spare the air again tomorrow. hot inland through wednesday.

here is a look at the hour-by-hour forecast and what is going to happen. tomorrow morning, parts of the east bay and the north bay along with the coast will be socked in by the fog. as we head into 10:00 a.m., most of the bay and inland seeing the sun. still some fog at the coastline. but we will see some sunshine, at least pockets of it near the coast as you'll notice by 4:00 p.m. fog will linger near some parts of the beach. if you don't like the hot weather, santa cruz may be your spot. it's going to be nice and mild tomorrow, fog giving way to sun, 72 degrees. it's going to be warmer saturday, mid-70s, dropping to the low 70s sunday. slight dip. low to mid 50s in the morning hours. here are your highs for the friday. smoke from the soberanes fire will make for hazy skies again. 81 in santa clara. 79 sunnyvale. 90 degrees in los gatos. on the peninsula upper 70s for redwood city, palo alto. 74 in san mateo. 63 half moon bay. 61 daly city. a mild day in downtown san francisco. 66 degrees. and in the north bay, mid-80s

around santa rosa. 79 vallejo. 78 in san rafael. east bay 74. oakland, 79, castro valley. 92 livermore, 96 antioch, 90 in walnut creek. we'll turn up the heat even more on saturday. near 100 degrees inland, low 60s coast. temperatures do slip a few degrees sunday. the only rebound. and look at the triple-digit heat tuesday, wednesday. inland areas will be baking but at least near the coast, low to mid-60s, (jet engine reving up) you hear that? that's the sound of our summer sale firing up its engines
