>> now at 11:00, a chain saw tears up a large tree limb that suddenly came crashing down on a mother at a popular san francisco park. tonight that woman is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. she is in pretty bad shape. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. it happened in a north beach neighborhood this afternoon. shortly after the tree limb fell on the woman. >> and that's where sergio is with live details on what happened. sergio? >> reporter: dan, the woman was sitting on this bench when that branch fell from about 50 feet up. it hit her in the head. tonight she remains in critical condition at san francisco general hospital. as a city worker cut apart a massive tree branch police officers collected the bags left on the bench by the woman who was hit. >> the branch fell and we believe hit her in the head. and so when we arrived she was in and out of consciousness.

>> she was hitting on the bench watching her two children on the playground. they were uninjured and she was rushed to san francisco general hospital with life-threatening injuries. according to the fire department she was bleeding from a head wound. a neighbor told me she is horrified at the accident, but she is not surprised. >> i think it is always just a matter of time and these branches have been falling off and it takes a windy day for a branch to come loose. >> just before the tree branch was cut up city workers were taking measurements of the limb. it was 19 inches around. the rec and park director said it has been six years since these trees were evaluated. >> would a drought have any effect on it? >> we don't think so looking at the tree itself. it has good moisture content and the wood is very healthy. >> this is not the first time a branch has injured or even killed someone in the city. in 2008 a woman was willed -- was killed by a falling limb.

as crews were cleaning up the accident scene they noticed a broken branch on the same tree and they called in a cherry picker to cut it down. in san francisco, abc7 news. now to the wildfire that raced through the santa clara county hills this afternoon. abc7 news was just out seed morgan hill when crews in the air and on the ground rushed to respond to the fleams. the fire started in a remote part of santa clara county near watsonville road west of morgan hill. we have live team coverage tonight and we begin with abc7 news reporter katie marzullo who is live at the fire staging area. katie if? >> it will be hard to make out, but we can see the flickering orange flames. those are power poles on fire. power lines were a major concern for firefighters on this one and the power poles continue to pose a threat.

from sky 7hd you can see the thick smoke rising from the hillside. the fast-moving fire arrived after 3:00 near morgan hill. sandra long had a scary front row seat. >> it was so powerful. it was like a powerful tornado. it was crazy. >> she and her friends were having fun putting up party decorations for a saturday lauo, but their moods quick loo changed. >> we had leaves still on fire landing on us. >> it was a dramatic situation even from a distance. cal fire issued evacuation warnings for 30 homes as 160 firefighters and six aircraft tackle ked the flames. >> the aircraft helped to slow the progression of fire. the fire made significant runs back up toward the hill. >> on the hill the major pg&e transmission lines. >> the electricity can work its way through that smoke.

we have strikes underneath there and if the fire itself destroys the polls it can compromise the lines and then we have the energized lines in and around the firefighters. >> pg&e had to de energize the line for safety cutting power to 637 customers and sandra was one of them. >> i was told it would be up and running by the time my party starts. >> power was restored after an hour and a half, but the power poles were burned and they will need to be repaired. the fire burned 25 acres and containment is at 20% because the firefighters hadn't made their way around the entire perimeter. the fire is not actively burning and it is not growing. live in santa clara county abc7 news. >> thanks etch have. let's continue our team coverage with sandhya patel in live doppler 7hd. >> and right now you will notice that near the morgan hill area where the fire has been burning it is actually clear. let's look at the current conditions in the vicinity and

the jail staff and had an unknown medical emergency. paramedics took him to a medical hospital where he died. >> new at 11:00, the sheriff investigators say a passenger in this jeep grand cherokee fired a bb gun out of the window and hit a person in the head. the sheriff's office released pictures of the jeep taken from a surveillance camera. it happened around 8:00 at east 14th street in san leandro. another incident happened a few minutes later. the jeep has tinted windows and chrome wheels and the first number of the license plate is seven. a millionaire tech mogul plans to appeal his sentence. abc news was at the halve justice as the judge sentenced shahal to a year in county jail. the founder of start ups of click agents and blue lithium was labeled the most eligible

bachelor. he pled guilty to beating his girlfriend a few years ago and he attacked another woman five years into probation. activists want a tougher sentence. >> do we believe he is a public safety threat? yes, we do. >> he left the courtroom a free man. the judge stayed the sentence while he appeals. striking court workers in santa clara county can be back on-the-job as early as monday. they reached a tentative deal this afternoon. hundreds of workers walked off their job last week and they demanded raises in the new contract. they delayed the court cases and many people couldn't file the routine forms because of the strike. a mysterious rectangular block in san jose have been found to be mosquito pesticides. as we first reported on abc7 news at 11:00, the park officials fear it was a rat poison that someone maliciously put in the trough to harm horses. the tests revealed a pesticide

and all the bay area, this is abc7 news. a federal judge today delivered a stunning reversal in one of the convictions profiled in the controversial and popular netflix series "making of a murderer." >> the true crime series cap captivated the nation. >> the netflix docu series. now there is an astonishing reversal profiled in "making a murderer" and in one man's rool fate. a federal judge in wisconsin overturning the conviction of brendan dassey. then a teenager was found guilty of helping his uncle rape and murder halback. the netflix documentary raised questions about whether the learning disabled teen was coerced into the confession.

investigators are questioning then sixteen-year-old dassey four times in 48 hours. the confession came during a three-hour interview. dassey's attorney criticizing those methods in an interview with dan harris. >> what you have here are police officers who are using psychological tactics used for seasoned adult criminals. >> thisy said his age and intellectual deficits rendered his confession voluntary. if they do not start proceedings to retry dassey they ordered his release in 90 days. abc news, los angeles. tonight donald trump has a new accusation about the fairness of the election. >> the only way they can beat it in my opinion, and i mean this 100%, if in certain sections of the state they

said he bought. he demands a refund and on tuesday he went to nourish cafe on california street. >> the story kept changing and the items kept changing. the reason he wanted a refund, the food was too dry and his story didn't add up. >> they complained about cup cakes that were not on the menu. he did get a few pizzas when he complained about burnt pies. employees soon caught on and figured out what was happening. it was a stunning loss for the women's u.s. soccer team. they fell to sweden in the quarterfinals. they came in as the three-time defending gold medal list, but lost in penalty kicks. it is the first time team usa will not compete for a gold medal in women's olympic sock you are history. after the game the goal keeper had strong and controversial statements saying, quote, i thought we played a courageous game. i thought we had many opportunities on goal.

lapse. really the fog is just swirl -- swirling around making for a beautiful sight. and that's why the temperatures are in the upper 50s and inland in the mid-nineties. we will repeat this again and bump up the temperatures inland. live doppler hd showing we have fog near the coast. and as we take you in closer visibility in half moon bay is down to two miles. to start your weekend, watch out for the fog. here is a view from the tower cam. notice how shallow it is. it has compressed. it is down to a thousand feet so it is not advancing very far. temperatures in the mid50sin san francisco and 58 oakland. san jose is mild at 65 degrees and morgan hill is 63 and half moon bay is in the mid50s. here is a look at the fog. if you are flying out tomorrow morning, could see a little delay especially during the early part of the day. 52 in santa rosa and looking at 59 in napa and 70 in livermore. still pretty warm. typical summer night. this is a murky view and this

is how your morning will start out along the coast and around parts of the bay we'll call is it morning coastal fog. another spare the air for tomorrow with a hot pattern lasting through next week. with the hot weather comes smog. we are looking for a spare the air. the mildest readings will be inland where we will start out in the low 60s and the rest is in the 50s. as you look at the hour by hour forecast here is what will happen. the fog is filled in along the coast and it has pushed into the bay. on saturday morning if you are running to do errands, you will start out gray. and then for the afternoon the fog sits around and keeps the coast company. inland we will see plenty of sun in the beaches. we have milder conditions at

the coast. 74 in santa cruz tomorrow and 62 at ocean beach and heading to monterey, 68 degrees. watch out. the smoke will continue to i'm pact the area. near 100. 88 in san jose and 83 sunnyvale 74 in santa cruz. 81 redwood city. 63 degrees and the fog will sit around in daly city, 60 degrees. north bay is 84 napa and in the east bay 75 berkeley and 76 oakland and 84 as you head inland and it is cooking. 9 sick degrees in livermore and 98 in antioch. 94 in pleasanton. we have our summer spread with the hot conditions on saturday. upper 90s there. minor cooling on sunday. upper 50s to mid-nineties. the temperatures rise again on monday and you will notice they continue to go up, upper 90s to low 100's inland.
