live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good morning to you. it's saturday august 13th. we're going to start off the hour with a quick look at weather. here is lisa. >> good morning. starting out with this foggy shot for you. you can see the marine layer but it continues to be shallow and dissipate really quickly throughout the morning hours. 72 in southeast and 63 in morganhill and just a couple of fingers of fog at mount cam. still 49 with santa rosa and 63 in livermore and finally you can see how shallow it is p we have a spare the air alert wt temperatures at the coast in the

low 60s. upper 90s inland. a woman remains in critical condition this morning off a 100 pound tree limb feel on her in san francisco. she suffered a serious head wound. we were over the scene in the north beach neighborhood shortly after that branch fell on her yesterday afternoon. >> reporter: as a city worker cut apart the massive tree branch, police officers collected the bags left on the bench by the woman who was hit. >> the branch fell and hit her in the head. when we arrived she was in and out of consciousness. >> >> reporter: was sitting on the bench watching her children play. she were uninjured and she was rushed to the hospital with life threaten injuries. according to the fire department she was bleeding from the head wound. a neighbor says she's horrified but not surprised. >> i think it's always just a

matter of time and when. these branchs have been falling off. it takes a windy day for the branch to come loose. >> reporter: just before the branch was cut up city workers were taking measurements of the limb. it was 19 inches years. it's been six years since the trees were evaluated. would a drought have any effect on its health. >> we don't think so. looking at the tree we see it has good moisture content and the wood is healthy. >> reporter: this is not the first time a branch has injured or killed someone in the city. in 2008 a woman was killed by a falling limb. as crews were cleaning up this accident scene they noticed another broken branch on the same tree but they called in a cherry picker to cut it down. southea san jose, abc 7 news.

new details on that wildfire that raised through the santa clara county hills yesterday. it has burned 25 acres and is now 75% contained. abc 7 news was outside morgan hill when crews in the air and ground rushed to respond to the flames. the fire started in a remote part of santa clara county west of morganhill. >> reporter: you can see the thick smoke rising from the hillside, the fast moving fire erupted just after 3:00. sandra long had a scarey front row seat. >> it was so powerful. it like a fire tornado. even the smoke coming off was like a tornado. >> reporter: she and her friends were putting up party declarations but the mood changed quickly. >> we had leaves that were actually still on fire landing on us. >> reporter: it was a dramatic

situation even from a distance. a viewer tweeted this photo. cal fire issued evacuation warnings for 30 homes. >> aircraft were quick into the area and helped slow the progression of the fire but the fire made some significant runs back up towards the hill. >> reporter: on the hill transmission lines. >> the electricity can work its way through that smoke and have down strikes under there or if the fire itself can compromise the lines and we have energized lines around the firefighters. >> reporter: pg&e had to cut the lines to 37,000 customers. >> i was told it would be up and running by the time my party starts. >> reporter: power was restored after 1 1/2 hours but power poles are burned and will need to be repaired. >> cal fire just released an

update on the fire minutes ago. it has burned 72,000 acres and is 60% contained. that's up from 55% yesterday morning. it started three weeks ago caused by an illegal camp fire. the man blamed for causing last year's devastating fire now claims a witness saw a suspicious vehicle in the area before flames broke out. john pench has filed legal papers demanding cal fire turn over evidence seized from his property. an investigation showed an out of code electrical connection caused the fire that killed four people and destroyed 1,300 homes and burned more than 76,000 acres. stay on top of the wildfires with the abc news app. you can download it for free. police in fairfield have announced they're investigating the death of a man after they

arrested him. officers arrested the man tuesday night. police say when they arrived to investigate the 61-year-old's suspicious behavior he charged at officers. they say he appeared to be intoxicated. they put him in an ankle restraint and took him to the jail. inside the jail he got involved with a struggle with jail staff and had an unknown type of medical emergency. paramedics took him to a local hospital where he died. sheriff investigators say a passenger in this jeep grand cherokee fired a bb gun out a window and hit a person in the head. it happened around 8:00 thursday night. another incident involving that same jeep happened just a few minutes later. the jeep has tinted windows,

chrome wheels and the first number of the license plate is 7. a millionaire tech mogo plans to appeal his conviction. abc 7 news was at the hall of joost as he was sentenced to a year in jail. he was once labeled america's most eligible bachelor. the 34-year-old pled guilty to beating his girlfriend three years ago. prosecutors say he attacked another woman just five months into his probation. domestic violence activists wanted a tougher sentence. >> do we believe he's still a public safety threat? yes, we do. >> he left the courtroom a free man. the judge stayed the sentence while he appeals. striking court workers in santa clara county could be back on the job monday. union leaders reached a tentative deal yesterday

afternoon. hundreds of clerks and workers walked off their jobs last week demanding wages in their new contract. their walk out delayed court cases and many people could not file routine forms because of that strike. mysterious blocks found in water troughs in the park in san jose have been found to be a mosquito pesticide. as we reported thursday night park officials feared the blocks were rat poison that someone put into the troughs to harm horses. tests yesterday revealed the blocks contain an organic pesticide used to eliminate mosquito lava. union city is capturing attention this morning after a man destroyed a religious text in front of a group of elders. international media has picked up this story because it's an incredibly offensive act but police can do nothing about it.

>> reporter: the netflix series rif on tveted millions and now astonishing reversal in one man's fate. a federal judge in wisconsin overturning the conviction of brendon. he was found guilty of helping his uncle rape and murder the photographer. avry remains behind bar but the netflix documentary raised questions about whether the teen was coerced into his confession. investigators questioning then 16-year-old daffy four times in 48 hours, the confession coming during a three-hour interview and his interview criticizing those methods in an interview. >> what you have here are police officers using psychological

interrogation tactics used for adults. >> reporter: the judge writing his age, metal deficit and absence of an adult rendered the confession unuseable. the judge has ordered his release in 90 days. turning to the race for the white house, donald trump has a new accusation about the fairness of the election. >> the only way they can beat it in my opinion, and i mean this 100%, if in certain sections of the state they cheat, okay. >> his comments came during a rally yesterday in pennsylvania. trump spent the day campaigning in the state. he said republican leaders there are very concerned about cheating. polls show hillary clinton leading in pennsylvania. later today former president bill clinton will be at a

reception in oakland. yesterday afternoon mr. clinton spoke on behalf of his wife in las vegas. he took only two questions, including one from a clinton supporter asking why democrats should trust her after her e-mail scandal. >> there are people who have spent their lifetime advancing the national security who believe she's the only person left you can trust. >> clinton said the accusation that she lied about her e-mails is not true. prior to today's reception in oakland the former president will attend a reception in pebble beach. an alert has gone out to mech chants in a neighborhood about a man demanding refunds for food he never bought and for reasons that aren't real. surveillance video shows the man who calls himself alli he's gone

to 14 businesses to complain about food he says he bought. the man demands a refund or something else in tuesday. on tuesday the suspect went to nourish cafe. >> the story kept changing, the items he ordered kept changing, the reason he wanted a refund was first the food was too dry and then there was a hair in food. >> at a local bake shop the suspect complained about cupcakes that weren't on the me menu. the man did get away with a few pizzas, however employees soon caught on. the bay area is known nor traffic jams but it's rare to see one like this. yes, right there you see a tribe of goats blocking traffic on concord avenue last night. there were about 200 animals in all and the drivers honking didn't seem to make them move

today once this disappears but for now there's mist and drizzle. 62 san jose, 63 morgan hill and from the camera trying to get hazy sunshine for you this morning, 49 degrees still in santa rosa. low 60s for fairfield and 65 in livermore. you're warming this morning inland and cooler around the bay where you've had the fog but things are changing just enough each and every day that we're going to lose a few degrees tomorrow and then gain them back on and off throughout the week ahead. nice to see the low deck because we're looking at the poor air quality today. in some parts of the bay the air quality will be better but for everyone it's moderate and we'll see the hot pattern next week.

two members of the san francisco police department airport bureau were recognized for saving the life of a georgia man who suffered a heart attack. the police officers are credited with saving the man. the heart attack victim had just arrived at sfo when he collapsed. spears and campbell used an airport aed and saved the man. we spoke with bishop from his home in georgia. >> i am just very very very

fortunate that everything lined up just like it did. if it had been anywhere else, it would have been a funeral. >> so just knowing that we are actually effected a life forever is great to know. >> spears credits her police academy training for the life saving skills. bishop was taken to the hospital and is now recovering back home in georgia. u2 will perform a benefit concert this fall. they are scheduled to appear on october 6th, however tickets are not cheap with general admission seats going for $1,000 and the 50 ticket package costing $1 million. that package includes an exclusive viewing area for the concert, sponorship of a cocktail reception and a full page ad in the program.

good saturday morning. we're starting off this half hour with a quick look at the weather. good morning lisa. >> good morning to you. we have pretty good air quality here in san francisco. it turns moderate later today but you can see the flag blowing there. the sea breeze will keep you comfortable today. 62 in san jose and 64 with fog in half moon bay. you are looking at the low clouds and fog that make it look like it will be a decent afternoon and it will be except we're going to look at that heat and the poor air quality in the inland east bay. 65 in livermore. here's the fog. it will line up along the shoreline but pull back from the bea beaches. we'll be left with 60s and 70s around the bay and mid to upper 90s inland. happening today, friends and

family of a woman who was shot and killed in texas will hold a celebration of life in her memory. the 30-year-old was visiting her fans s fiance in austin when she was killed. her wedding was set for next month. she was a long-time bus driver for the high school district. her celebration of life begins at noon in the performing arts center in belmont. a 19-month-old boy who fell from a third story window has died of his injuries. he went through a screen in that apartment complex falling 20 feet to the ground thursday morning. he died later that night at stanford medical center. the window he fell through was built close to the floor and authorities are calling this a tragic accident. more than two dozen people need a place to live while work is being done to fix their homes damaged in a traffic accident. the impact from the crash

weakened part of a five-unit apartment building on chestnut street. a car hit two parked vehicles and that shoved those parked cars into the building around 10:15 yesterday morning. >> unable to occupy it until the owner and contractor can repair it. we're concerned about the wiring getting stressed and gas damage. >> here is another look at the scene. the driver of the car went to the hospital after getting hurt. that accident is now investigation. for the second time in less than a month someone has gone to a busy san jose street to cut down a row of trees. a total of 46 trees have been sliced with a clean cut to the trunk. environmentalists are appalled and a reward is being offered. >> reporter: the damage has spread down both sides of the street where volunteers have

planted 46 trees to beautify the neighborhood. 23 trees were cut nearly a month ago and now the matching 23 on the east side have been cut. >> this does not happen in just a minute. it would take up to half an hour to saw all of these trees each time and i know that this is a busy street that has even in the dead of night there are -- there's traffic. >> reporter: it may be a busy street but no one has reported seeing anything suspicious. a $5,000 reward is being offered by a council member. >> this mean and unkind vandal set the city back from continuing to beautify things. we will replant the trees and we will set up a camera. >> reporter: he funded the project from his own office budget. the trees were planted by volunteers in the spring. volunteers came by to water the

trees and they discovered the vandali vandalism. they have planted 80,000 trees over three years. they operate a nursery. they say these chinese fringe trees provide shade along streets while helping to clean pollution from the air so destroying trees is baffling to them. >> i don't see how anyone can come in with this kind of mindset and just take everything down. >> reporter: in san jose, abc 7 news. turning now to the rio olympics, 100 meet freestyle gold medallist simone has another shot at gold today. she made history earlier this week. she became the first african-american woman to win an individual medal in swimming at the olympics. abc 7 news reporter has more. >> reporter: commitment, drive, discipline, just a few words these young athletes can take from this olympic gold medal

winner. the 20-year-old is the first african-american woman to win a gold medal in swimming at the olympics. >> she turned 20 a couple of weeks ago. it's a lot for a young lady to process but the at same time she was that 11-year-old girl that did the research on the internet trying to find african-american swimmers at the olympics. >> reporter: she has coached simone from 11 years old until she enrolled in stanford university. she recalls advise the young olympian gave kids. >> she talked about how we need to enjoy the process, there are going to be ups and downs. she talked with our girls. >> reporter: swimmers put in lapses at the stanford university aquatic center, the same lanes where simone trained. on stanford's campus visitors are talking about all the u.s. swimmers. >> you hear people talking about michael phelps. i think it's fun to hear that.

>> fight through pain and give it a shot because there's no guarantee. >> i think every american swimmer we haven't won that event since 1984 so i think across the country the country was happy for her. >> so much pride for this olympic gold medal swimmer making her mark in history. abc 7 news. it was a stunning loss for the u.s. women's soccer team in the olympics yesterday. they fell to sweden in the quarterfinals. team u.s.a. came in as the three time defending gold medallists but lost 4-3. it's the first time team u.s.a. will not compete for medal in soccer history. after the game there were strong statements saying quote i thought we played a courageous game. i thought we had many opportunities on goal. we came back from a goal down. i'm very proud of this time but i also think we played a bunch

northeast of sacramento is a disturbingly low water levels. tens of billions of gallons of water have been pumped out of the lake in recent months. there are thousands of cubic feet being released every second to residents and farmland. on july 1st the lake was at 73% capacity thanks to a powerful el nino but now it's at 42%. looking outside my window here from the camera you can see the fog already evaporating here in san francisco. temperatures as much as five degrees warmer here. it will be average and comfortable but conditions get hot in the next coming few days. we'll talk about next. >> thank you. next, raider nation hopes

this air mass is going to get pushed out of here tomorrow by an area of low pressure that will allow for some slight cooling around the bay. we've had 24 days of 100 degree heat in sack rramensacramento. as i said just a little bit of cooling for us tomorrow. it doesn't look like it's going to translate to the central valley. here is that look for today. tomorrow we're down by three to five degrees. we're still in the 60s and 70s and the red begins to shift westward but not enough to bring us up into the 80s but tuesday we're getting close. what you would expect for august. so we're looking at temperatures today still in the low 70s for the a's it's the starwars
