"abc7 news" starts right now with live, breaking news. >> that breaking news is out of milwaukee, wisconsin, where violence erupted after police shot and killed an armed man. a scuffle broke out at the scene of the crime while investigators were still gathering evidence. later, rioters set fire to vehicles and at least four businesses, including a gas station, a bank, and a grocery store. one officer was injured by a brick thrown through a patrol car window. there have been reports of gunfire in the area. police increased patrols because the neighborhood saw five homicides in nine hours last night. police say the man they killed today had a loaded hand gun. stay with us for any breaking updates and follow us on twitter. good evening. i'm eric thomas. we're following developing news

out of hayward after officers shot a person after he ran his vehicle injuring into officers. lisa? >> reporter: eric, police just briefed me on a very complicated crime scene which started just two miles from here. >> we have an active shooting scene here. >> reporter: this is the call for help that went out haywa hayward. a stolen mercedes had been spotted. when police arrived, two men were in the car and wouldn't get out, when the suspect put it in drive. >> he was ramming multiple police vehicles, hit an officer on foot. at that point, officers discharged their weapon, obviously in defense of their own lives, and that of others. and the vehicle continued to

flee the scene and then struck an additional two vehicles after that exchange. >> reporter: the driver of the stolen car drove along patrick and finally came to a stop at gomer. that's when the passenger made a run for it but police chased him down. the driver had been hit by a bullet. he is in the hospital in critical condition at this hour. two officers were hurt but did not go to the hospital. police tonight are not saying if the suspects exchanged gunfire and not saying exactly how many shots were fired by police. >> lisa, thank you. the brother of an aspiring chef found dead at the westfield mall in san francisco says he was at the mall to buy jeans and possibly see a movie. those new details come from a woman he was dating.

a maintenance worker found his body wednesday morning. police are calling his death a homicide but have not made any arrests. police boosted their efforts to find a gunman who killed a young man. calvin riley was playing pokemon go when someone shot and killed him. serg sergio? >> reporter: eric, police officers began passing out these flyers at about 9:00 tonight. that's about the time they say that calvin was shot at that walkway last saturday night. calvin riley's parents joined u.s. park police for tonight's canvassing effort. officers passed out flyers hoping to focus further attention on this case. riley was shot to death while playing pokemon go here with a friend last saturday night. a small memorial has been set up

in his honor. police have not released many details on this case. they hoped surveillance video in the area might give clus about the shooter. now, investigators are looking for any images shot between 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. including selfies. >> that would be critical if somebody captured something that could lead to someone being arrested. we are very interested in any material. >> reporter: this is an area that's turned into a popular place for people playing pokemon go. willie hong showed me why so many people come here. >> there's a lot of points and people can put up like modules and they attract pokemon. >> you can look and see where different pokemon spawn. >> reporter: joseph says he learned about calvin riley's

murder from those online forums. he says some people have been posting safety messages. investigators say they hope this effort will garner new clues and remind people to be careful and be aware of their surroundings. u.s. park police are hoping anyone with any information in this case can call their dedicated tip line at 415-561-5150. reporting live in san francisco, "abc7 news." >> thank you, sergio. the chp is searching for a man who ran away from a car crash that impaled his passenger. it happened just outside petaluma this morning. witnesses say the car went airborne, flipped over and came down on a metal fence. the driver ran away with a woman pinned in the front seat with a section of the fence going through her. >> i had the worst expectation

and it was what i expected. without climbing in too far to see, you could see it was going right through her midsection and she couldn't move. >> rescuers cut both ends of the fence to get the woman out. she was conscious the whole time. there are new details on the 100 pound tree limb that fell and hit a woman on the head. today, mayor ed lee said the tree work is conducted regularly at the park. parts of the bay area saw intense heat today. this is a live look at walnut creek. meteorologist drew tuma has more with live doppler 7 hd. drew? >> look at these highs.

conkord up to 98 today. antioch with a high of 100 degrees. 101 in lake port. around the immediate bay waters, it wasn't too bad. south bay, in san jose, nice and toasty with a high of 88 degrees. along with that heat inland, poor air quality today but refreshing news. sunday, that air quality is inproving. as it improves, we'll see a brief cooldown. we'll see the heat spike once again. we'll see the numbers in the full forecast coming up. a wildfire forced people out of their homes in lake county tonight. it started at about 6:00 this evening near highway 9. homes in ellen springs and clayton creek have been evacuated. the fire has burned 600 acres. it's only 15% contained. tomorrow, highway 1 near big sur will be closed because of a fire that's destroyed 57 homes.

the closure begins at 2:00 p.m. and could last up to 24 hours, depending on the weather conditions. at least three people have died in record flooding in louisiana. but one woman survived in dramatic fashion. >> i almost died. i was drowning. >> we're coming. >> in baton rouge, two men giving a local news reporter a tour spotted a red car. as they got closer, they heard a woman screaming. one jumped into the water, pried open the top and pulled the woman to safety. the woman told them her dog was in the car, as well. he then saved the dog, as well. still to come, south bay residents tell a cell phone giant not in our backyard. and did donald trump call for

residents in a west san jose neighborhood are fighting to keep verizon from building a cell tower near their homes. lisa has our story. >> reporter: there's no misunderstanding how those in san jose's regency park neighborhood feel about a proposed verizon cell phone tower. the planning commission approved it for the orchard farms shopping center, camouflages as a pine tree. >> this was appropriate and worked at that location.

even after a wet winter, water levels are plummeting at fulsome lake. this is east of sacramento. the lake keeps losing water because water has been promised to farmers and fisheries. a month ago, it was at 73% capacity. now it's at 42%. starting monday, boaters will face a 5-mile-per-hour speed limit due to the low water levels. drew tuma joins us now with a look at the forecast. >> we started off the weekend very warm. the second half a couple of degrees cooler. live doppler 7 hd showing you the coast to be tonight if you want that cool marine layer. we'll zoom in a little closer, not even covering the entirety of san francisco. a little fog pushing into mill

valley at this time. this is that really thin layer of fog right now. you can see the tower blinking above the fog. and a good shot of visibility, but that fog will expand around the bay in the next couple of hours. the forecast calls for the morning fog, a little drizzle along the coast. minor cooling for sunday and into monday. by tuesday, especially wednesday, you are going to feel that heat, especially inland once again. we're still holding on to a little bit of warmth. 70 in san malone. 70 conkord. we have cooled down to 54 in san francisco. 67 in san jose. and napa with a temperature of 61 degrees. overnight tonight, we have that coastal fog right now, pushing into the bay. so dropping into the 50s, inland is going to take a little bit of time. you might want to open up the windows tonight, a little bit of

live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." >> good evening. i'm eric thomas. breaking news out of milwaukee, wisconsin, where there are new reports of a police car hit by gunfire after violent protests, looting, vandalism, and at least four buildings set on fire tonight. riots broke out after police shot and killed an armed man who was running from officers this afternoon. one police officer is in the hospital after being hit in the head with a brick. police have arrested at least three people. in mayward, a man is in critical condition after a man

shot him. they say he was driving a stolen car and rammed several police cars. at least two officers were hurt. a news reporter touring the record flooding in baton rouge, louisiana, captured an incredible rescue. a good samaritan pulled a woman out of her sinking car and saved her dog, as well. rescue crews have saved more than 1,000 people from flood waters. a storm system dumped the equivalent of three months of rain in one day in louisiana. at least three people are dead. here is the latest from louisiana. >> reporter: the rain just keeps coming. >> this is certainly not over. >> reporter: and the flood waters keep rising. >> everything is there is destroyed. >> reporter: louisiana under siege, hundreds of rescuers as crews rush to bring everyone to safety. >> we have record levels of flooding along rivers and creeks. and because these are record

floods, we don't know how wide the water is going to get in those areas. >> reporter: the governor calling in the national guard to help. emergency declarations are now in effect across portions of the state, as police and fire departments struggle to get people trapped in their homes and vehicles. >> our helicopters are primarily in active search and rescue right now. they're trying to coordinate with officials on the ground. >> reporter: this family had to leave their flooded home on foot, carrying a baby through rushing water. their local sheriff jumping in to help. >> the sheriff has an infant, trying to keep the baby dry. >> reporter: but fishes can't get to everyone. in this case, a good samaritan helped pull a man from his sinking vehicle. but it's frustrating for law enforcement, as people drive into flooded areas.

>> we all know what means road closed means. don't cross it. >> reporter: phillip menna, abc news, louisiana. an attack happened in broad daylight as men were walking home from afternoon prayers. a gunman shot both in the back of the head. investigators have no evidence they were targeted because of their faith. >> we feel really insecure and unsafe. in a moment like this, it's threatening to us and our future, and our mobility in the neighborhood. and we're looking for the justice. >> he and other worshippers are asking that the murders be treated as a hate crime. so far, swiss police do not believe an attack aboard a train was linked to terrorism. a man stabbed people and poured a liquid on a woman. a fire then broke out aboard the train.

it happened in northwestern switzerland near the nation's border with liechtenstein. swiss media outlets report the injuries are serious. the suspect was also injured. more outrage tonight following the sentencing of this college student convicted of raping an unconscious victim. his crime took place in colorado and resembles the case involving brock turner. prosecutors asked for prison time for austin wilkerson. instead, a judge sentenced him to two years in jail where he can leave for work and school. >> there has to be a rehabilitation component. >> in our opinion, as we argued to the court throughout the process, has given whatever version of the story what is best going to serve him. >> wilkerson will be on probation for 20 years.

turner's six-month sentence sparked efforts to have a judge removed. kenny baker acted in dozens of movies and tv shows. his family says he did not expect to live past a teenager and was happy in the days leading up to his death. he was 81. michael phelps got his 23rd gold medal, but he wasn't the only one to place at the games in rio. jim ryan has more. >> reporter: the end of an era. michael phelps caps his career with a gold medal, helping the 4x100 relay surge to the end. this is his 28th medal overall. the most decorated olympian ever. the women's team taking on the

if someone asks which animal kills the most americans each year, you may think bears, sharks, even mosquitos. but the correct answer is deer. they kill an average of 200 people per year in collision with cars. dan ashley has details on a california experiment to protect people and animals. >> reporter: these animals are pioneers. adventurous creatures using man made structures to get acrossroads alive. the types of crossings and animals using them vary around the world, but interest is exploding, because scientists say the crossings work. if they're done correctly. >> for many years as we were driving along, if we hit an animal, we thought that's too bad, but there's nothing you can do about it. now we realize there is something you can do about it. >> reporter: this wildlife crossing is on highway 89 near

truckee. and animals are using it. >> we have a lot to learn. >> reporter: that's where this new project comes in. just a few miles away, sandra jacobson is showing off an experiment now under construction. two identical highways in areas known to be full of wildlife. fences along the road will guide the animals. >> trying to get the enranss of the structures to where animals will find a trail to walk in. >> reporter: the reason for two tunnels is to allow researchers to try different strategies in each one and see what works best. >> so for example, if it looks more value, we can put rocks and stumps inside of the structure to feel more comfortable. >> reporter: the projects are part of a unique stewardship team with many agencies working together, including caltrans which is trying animal crossings

in other areas, too. >> as we show the pictures and people evaluate them, we can show that they are working better than we ever expected. >> reporter: caltrans is spending $2 million on these experimental tunnels, hoping they'll lead to better and cheaper solutions. experts are already sharing lessons from across the world and a workshop here. >> that is the bear. >> reporter: one team came from south america to find out more how to keep jaguars from being hit by cars. >> this is a very new discipline, and we want to learn from the best. >> reporter: jacobson says research shows well-placed wildlife crossings and fences can cut collisions by 75% to 100% and still allow animals to get to where they need to go. >> so do you know the best way to avoid an accident if you see a deer on the road?
