live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> we're getting our first look at some of the homes burned to the ground by the raging clayton fire in lake county. thousands remain evacuated, unsure of the fate of their homes. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. we want to show you exactly where the clayton fire is burning in the communities of lower lake and clearlake. cal fire tells us the fire is expanding aggressively northward. it's burned 3,000 acres and destroyed 175 structures. it's only 5% contained. we have live team coverage. met kel ar is in los gatos with

the help that bay area crews are providing. mike nicco is tracking weather conditions related to the fire. let's begin with amy hollyfield. >> reporter: look at this aftermath. it's hard to know what you're looking at. firefighters must look at this and determine was this a home, a business, was it two businesses? while they are on the inside of the evacuation area assessing the damage, people on the outside are anxious for details. this is what lower lake residents are trying to see, as hard as it is to look at. evacuees who ran out of this town to safety are now desperate for information about their home or business. >> really desperate. i'm looking on the internet, and anything i can. >> reporter: this mother and daughter left the area last night feeling like their home was going to be okay, but not entirely sure. >> it's awful. it's hard for me since i am

pregnant, i'm like a basket case right now. >> reporter: but while we were standing there an officer came over with a list of homes still intact on lake street. a heavily damaged street off of main street. their home was not on the list. >> i have to go call my parents. they lost everything. >> reporter: we are allowed in the evacuated zone and decided to go take a picture for them. imagine our relief when we saw this, a house instead of rubble. we rushed back to the safety zone to show them. >> oh, that's good. thank you. thank you. >> reporter: there are 4,000 evacuees waiting for news about their homes and their animals. firefighters say they're working as quickly as they can. >> we need to be accurate in getting that accurate and timely information out to those folks, whether it's their house or a barn. that takes time to determine. we should have those numbers here in the next few days.

>> reporter: just look at how hot this fire was that came through here. this is melted metal from a car that burned here in lower lake. no word on when they're going to lift that evacuation order. they want to as soon as they can, but they want to make sure it's safe, and they want to assess everything before they let everyone back in here. but they say the fire is burning away from people and from homes. so that is the good news. they also tell us they're getting animal control and rescue groups into this area so they're working with them as well so they can get food and water to the animals that you saw wandering the area. no injuries have been reported at this point. too early to say what caused this fire. live in lower lake, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> let's hope it stays that way. pg & e has cut power to miles of electrical line to make it safer for firefighters. 1800 homes and businesses are without power.

that's down from 8300 last night. the flames had damaged pg&e power poles and other equipment. a power outage is forcing the evacuation center at highland senior center in clearlake to close, but three others remain open. kelseyville high school, twin pine casino in middletown and seventh day adventist church in lakeport. you can find a list of the locations on abc7.com. many evacuees are gathering at the moose lodge in clear lake oaks. it's not an officially designated shelter but the lodge is inviting evacuees there for food and care. the lodge is being run by volunteers and donations. this morning there were 50 people there and the lodge fed 200 evacuees, the lodge is located east of clear lake on highway 20. several schools in the konocti school are closed. they include lower lake high school and elementary.

carle, konocti education center, burns valley, pomona, east lake. we have these closures posted on abc7news.com. the flames have forced hospitals to close until further notice. according to the lake county news, patients were transferred to sutter lakeside hospital 28 miles away. one lower lake resident got creative to stay safe from the fire. he used water from his pool to put out hot spots on his property before firefighters got to his neighborhood. he and his son even took shelter in the pool for a while to avoid the oncoming flames. how long were you in the pool? >> just about 20, 15 minute ors so. it got intense, smoke and fire and sparks just blowing for a while here. >> the fire burned several businesses in the downtown area of lower lake. a sandwich shop, a winery and a habitat for humanity office are all destroyed. teams of bay area firefighters

are headed to lake county to help battle the clayton fire, and that has an impact at the fire scene and here locally. abc 7 news reporter matt kel ar is live in los gatos with that part of the story. matt? >> reporter: kristin, this is the fifth strike team deployed this summer. it's a tough job for those who go and it's very demanding for those who stay behind. work goes on for santa clara county firefighters who were not deployed to the clayton fire in lake county. several crews helped put out a small kitchen fire in los altos this morning. they'll be working extra hours in the bay area because last night two strike teams from santa clara county were sent to help. a total of 44 firefighters and 12 vehicles from san jose, sunnyvale, mountainview, palo alto, morgan hill and santa clara county fire are in lake county. they plan on being up there for two weeks. >> we've been called in to supplement the forest agencies a lot more in the last few years

than we ever had historically in the past. >> reporter: the teams have water power, 1500 gpm or gallons per minute, can be pumped out. crews from daly city, san francisco, marin county and the woodside fire protection district were also sent to the front line. this has been a busy month. many just home from fighting a fire in monterey county. >> two or three weeks ago we're down at the incident and our engine was down there. it seems to be that type of of typical california summer where at any given day you need to be prepared. >> reporter: and to give you an idea how hard these firefighters work, they were deployed last night at 8:00 from the los gatos station here for the santa clara county fire department. and this morning at about 5:30, the battalion chief here went and check the gps to see where their engine was located at the clayton fire and he saw they were doing structure protection on the front lines.

to get a look at how the weather will impact these firefighters on the frontlines, we check in with mike nicco. looks like it will be hot out there. >> definitely. it will only get hotter the next couple of days. good morning, everybody. let's take a look at the radar returns. you notice there was a solid shield from the thick heavy smoke rolling through. now a sporadic nature. 86, relative humidity 19%. winds blowing from the east to west at 8 to 12 miles per hour. they'll pick up speed and start to switch from the southwest and west during the afternoon hours and calm them during the evening and overnight hours. here is the temperature. 93 today. 98 tomorrow. 100 wednesday. 96 thursday. we'll get a bit of a break and especially saturday and sunday hoping the marine air can reach that far north. it's hard. and bring them a little bit of coolness and moisture in the air. until then, they're going to have a hard time. >> yeah. unfortunately, mike, thank you.

developing news out of louisiana where a state of emergency is in effect on the heels of a massive flooding

issue. tens of thousands have been forced from their homes and the waters are still rising. ab krshs's kenneth moten has more on this developing story. >> reporter: the bayou state under water. incredible images of flooding coming out of louisiana. an extraordinary water rescue caught on camera. this woman in baton rouge pulled from her sinking car just in the nick of time. more than 30 inches of rain in just a week triggered historic flooding and a state of emergency. at least six people are dead, 20,000 people rescued from the rising waters. >> even though it was an unnamed storm, it was historic levels of river and creeks rising, and i will tell you that we've not seen anything like this in the past. >> reporter: u.s. coast guard is in the air making daring high water rescues. the louisiana national guard is on the ground where 200 roads are closed or impassable. >> we have road closures all

over louisiana. the water is dangerous in terms of the coverage on the roads. >> reporter: right now 12,000 people are in shelters, many of them grabbed whatever they could. others escaped with just the clothes on their backs. >> we shot out the back door. there were spiders. we went out through the kitchen, there was a snake. we got in the car, tried to leave, but we couldn't. >> reporter: president obama declared louisiana a major disaster. the weather's improving but the rivers continue to rise. water levels are not expected to recede for two more days. kenneth moton. hackers may have stolen information from customers from 20 hotels. they operate merritt and starwood properties. malware may have collected names and card information. meridien san francisco is one of the hotels listed. you can find the rest at abc

that's a small craft advisory from 1:00 this afternoon to 9:00 this evening. you can see that swirl off bodega bay and another one in monterey? we call those eddys. they've really enhanced the sea breeze and the cloud cover, made it really slow to retreat back to the coast. that's why temperatures in most neighborhoods are still in the 50s and 60s. only los gatos and antioch seeing more sunshine. they're well up in the 70s right now. that will leave us in the upper 70s to low 80s for the bay. we'll be much cool kerr around millbrae, 59. and only low to mid-60s in downtown south san francisco and sausalito. we should be around 69 in san francisco. only 62 today. that will be cool at at&t park. pirates in town to take on the giants. dropping down to 56. it will be breezy this evening.

head up to the north bay. mid-70s to low 80s until you get up to lowport. berkeley, richmond and hercules mostly sunny and upper 60s. more sunshine from oakland southward and mid to upper 70s except for oakland at 70, here are your temperatures inland. san ramon valley 84, we're in the low to mid-90s. tomorrow we're back in the 50s once again. my seven-day forecast. a small area of high pressure will bring us slightly faster sunshine tomorrow and temperatures i think will be warmer than today, although they don't really reflect it right there. wednesday will be warmest, then a gradual cooling trend that will bring our temperatures below average by saturday and sunday. >> a bill moving through the state legislature would allow women to get a year's worth of birth control pills at a time. supporters say the change would make unintended pregnancies less
