as officials survey the damage. >> 4,000 acres have burned. you could see from sky 7 hd that there are very few flames remaining as we showed you earlier. but cal fire still said it is only 5% contained. >> more than a thousand fire fighting personnel are on the front lines, including from the bay area. we have live team coverage for you. sandhya patel will have the fire forecast in a moment. >> and let's begin with sergio quintana live on main street, a hard-hit area in lower lakes. sergio? >> reporter: one of the businesses that has been devastated is this very popular restaurant. could you see this is reduced to rubble. this is the back end of the restaurant. the big job for the fire crews today has been to chase after a bunch of spot fires that are dotted throughout the burn area. for those who chose to stay home despite the calls to evacuate on sunday, it was exhausting. >> you were just running around

trying to put spot fires out and it was just kind of hell on earth. >> reporter: but the fire fight isn't over. just as he was describing his hectic weekend, a spot fire flared up behind his home. >> it is picking up in a spot that hasn't burned and it is starting to really pick up now. >> reporter: within seconds, he sped off to his backyard, within minutes fire trucks pulled up and helicopters swooped over to dump water on the spot fire. those helicopters are part of a aerial fleet being used here and it includes a massive jet used to dump fire retardant on huge swaths of land. darren bailey lives near where pilots come to refill their buckets. >> well, we have a creek right back here and there is a wide spot and they are picking up water and taking it to wherever they need to drop it. >> he said he tried to evacuate yesterday but was too late to get out. >> this started catching and we kind of got trapped in here. >> the fire spared his home but now he is worried for his neighbors that did evacuate and

he hopes they could return soon. in lower lake, about 175 buildings have been burned down or damaged and power lines are on the road because of snapped poles. crews are bracing for another tough day. >> the temperatures are going to be exactly what we experienced yesterday. high temperatures, low relative humidity. >> reporter: they will get no help from mother nature. fire officials will be holding two meetings for residents so they could get information, especially those who have been evacuated. the first one tonight at 6:00 at the kelseyville high school. the second one at 7:30, that is at the twin pines casino. live in lower lake, i'm sergio quintana, abc 7 news. >> thank you so much. many evacuated residents are staying in shelters and some don't know if their homes are standing or if they will return to scenes of destruction like this. >> i got my animals and me and my wife and our child out and i'm worried about our home.

>> it is the cycle of life. fire happens. and it is supposed to happen. we try to stop it from happening. but it is going to happen any way. >> and even at this point we don't know if it is burned and we hope it is not because that was everything. >> and i just hope that everybody is okay. >> reporter: lake county residents are all too familiar with having minutes to escape oncoming flames. last year several wildfires including the valley fire forced people out of homes and devastated the area. several fire departments from the bay area have sent firefighters and equipment to fight the flames in lake county. er looking at a strike team with several agencies in san mateo county. and they left daly city and crews from marin and santa clara are also on the front lines and another strike team from san francisco fire left last night. more than 1600 firefighters are now battling that wildfire. and just look at how much has burned in the last year. the clayton fire is burning in the middle of three devastating

wildfire, the valley fire, rocky fire and so-called jerusalem fire and that is thousands of acres burned and hundreds of homes destroyed. >> and one place caring for those is the moose lodge. people gathered at the oun official shelter. around 50 people stayed there overnight and they have fed some 200 people chased out of homes by fire. voentss are staffing it and -- volunteers are staffing it and the food is donated. there are three centers open. at kelseyville high school, twin pine casino in middletown and seventh day adventist church in lake port. find the list of locations on our website at abc7news.com. let's give you another live look from sky 7 hd of the clayton fire in lake county. just look at the damage. nearly 200 structures have been destroyed. we have just seen blocks reduced to nothing but rubble. hot weather and low humidity make it difficult for firefighters. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a look at the

conditions on the fire line. >> dan, take a look with our live doppler 7 hd, you notice that the intensity of the fire is so bad that it is being picked up on our live doppler 7 hd. notice around lower lake and clear lake, current conditions, you mentioned, it is hot there. 97 degrees. relative humidity is low, 11%. winds are gusting to 7 miles per hour. the winds are expected to remain fairly light over the next 24 hours except picking up at 7:00 p.m. to about 11 miles per hour. now as you take a look at the conditions ahead, this is not good for firefighters. it is going to get hotter tuesday, wednesday, we're expecting temperatures near 100 degrees. and then the temperatures start to slowly come down. but it is not until this weekend when the humidity will actually rise. so until then, they are going to have to battle not just the fire, but the hot weather and the dry conditions. dan. >> thanks very much. it is going to be intense. as she suggested, for the next

really long time. >> reporter: after what she called a six-week crush that developed here at sons and daughters, the duo was officially together just two weeks. >> it would have been really hard for him to have been doing anything in the past couple of weeks that i didn't know about because we were pretty much attached to one another. >> reporter: tuesday frank told her he was headed to the mall to buy jeans and wednesday morning someone found his body in the mall emergency exit stairwell. >> it was kind of strange that he hadn't texted me that day so i just wanted to make sure he was okay. >> reporter: she said she called police to report frank missing. she said detectives interviewed her at sons and daughters on wednesday but didn't tell her frank's body had already been found. >> the only thing that really can make this right is for the person who did this to be caught. >> reporter: frank's brother has been in san francisco from los angeles since friday. >> my whole mission coming up here was to get -- gather information. >> reporter: he has been inside of the stairwell where frank's

body was found. >> a lot of graffiti, doors are propped open and the camera that is by the exit was -- it was spray painted over. what happened inside, it is what vital. we need to know who was in there and who was going on. >> while it is not clear what, if any, surveillance video they have, detectives tell him leads are coming in. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. no arrests have been made following another violent crime in westfield san francisco center. a man said he was mugged while using a restroom inside of the mall on friday evening. the 20-year-old man told police three young men punched him several times. they rummaged through his backpack and stole school supplies and he refused medical attention after being hurt. the mt. diablo school district will pay $1.2 million to 11 boys who accused a former teacher of molesting them. joseph martin is serving a 12-year prison term after a jury found him guilty of child

molestation last year. he was charged with inappropriately touching his male students when he was a teacher at woodside elementary school. the victim sued the district claiming they knew about the abuse and failed to report it and today settlement still needs to be approved by the school board. tonight a san francisco woman is in intensive care with critic critical injuries after a massive tree limb crushed her spine and now the city is taking a closer look at the trees in washington square park. carolyn tyler has more on this story live tonight. >> reporter: dan, the rec and park department in san francisco faces a $1 billion deficit when it comes to deferred maintenance for things like irrigation or infrastructure upgrades. but the director said the trees here at washington square park are well maintained. but now they will get a closer look.

today san francisco's head arborist began a visual inspection of all 60 trees in washington square park. this, after a massive 100 pound branch fell on friday, critically injuring a 36-year-old mother of two as she watched her children play. helen and her young daughters were sitting on the same bench and quickly moved to another spot. washington square in the heart of north beach is one of san francisco's oldest parks. established in 1847. the director of rec and parks said the canary pine involved in the tragic incident was healthy. >> we'll have to figure out if there was anything unique about this tree. this is a park that actually has had a lot of tree maintenance and assessments and there was an assessment done in '08 and updated in '10 and tree work in 2013. >> this park regular said he was here when friday's accident happened. and believes perhaps during persistent drought, the trees need more watering.

they were attending a party at a gallery that was closing and a group of outsiders that they don't know showed up at the party and started a fight. >> friends of 22-year-old terrance mccreary, leave flowers and candles for a man shot and killed at a block party early on sunday. >> i'm tried of seeing memorials all over the place. and this time, once again it is for somebody i know. >> reporter: it happened around 1:00 a.m. outside of this gallery in downtown oakland. a fight spilled into the street. three people were shot. mccreary and 20-year-old craig fletcher cooks were killed. >> he was trying to get away and he got -- he just got hit in the cross-fire. >> reporter: friends say it all started when someone grabbed fletcher cook's girlfriend. >> he tried to protect her and right as that happened some other guy punched him in the face and he fell to the ground and then a bunch of guys jumped him. >> and then gunshots. a nearby business owner called

police last week to try and put a stop to the events before it even happened. she said the gallery's parties have routinely gotten out of hand. >> the incident is not that happen in one night, it is just -- i feel like the -- the feeling on the block is just over the matter of months, it has escalated to this and it is -- it is a tragedy. >> reporter: both men lived in oakland and graduated from berkeley high school. fletcher cooks played football and rugby and friends remember mccreary for his positive attitude. police met with mourners and are asking anyone with information to speak up. abc 7 news. the shibbo gun club announced it is shutting down after more than 50 years in business. the board of directors voted to close the doors on labor day september 5th. they face pressure from environmentalists and the parks district who said lead from spents ammunition was polluting the water at the park. the range is popular with

recreational sport shooters and law enforcement who train at the range. a contra costa judge said the legal fight over a controversial housing development could go forward. the fight is over a property known as deer hill. where the city of lafayette approved a plan to build 44 houses. a renters group is suing claiming state law requires them to approve a larger apartment complex proposed originally for the site. lafayette tried to have the case thrown out on legal technical y technicalities but a judge has ruled the lawsuit can go to trial. and the grandson of great boxing legend muhammad ali will play for the cal football team. he announced on twitter this weekend with a picture with his family saying, i am blessed to say i'm committed to california berkeley. the high school running back picked cal over scholarship offers from arizona, nevada and unlv. and former running back and cal bear marshawn lynch sent out his

an after party featuring will i. am and mc hammer. parents are putting their babies to risk in bed and in ways that make sudden infant death syndrome more likely. penn state researchers recorded the parents of more than 16 owe babies and say they are alarmed at what they saw. pediatricians say babies should be put to sleep on backs and parents should not share a bed with their babies. well if you think exercise will fix the effects of sitting all day, think again. today the american heart association said exercise on its own could not reduce your risk for getting heart disease if you sit all day as many who work in offices do. more research is needed to figure out exactly how long is too long to sit without activity. some doctors suggest taking a one to three minute break every half hour to walk around or just stand up. >> good advice. which we'll do during this
