the lake county fire. it is my pleasure to announce the arrest of damon anthony pashil. >> leads to relief. now they have a long battle ahead. >> good evening. i'm dan ashley. he is damon pashil jievment he was booked on 17 counts of arson for fires in lake county including the 4,000 acre clayton fire. >> his charges will likely be enhanced because homes have been destroyed. >> he has been arrested a dozen times before mostly for parole vie layings, mostly weapons and drug charges. >> katie was at the emotional meeting where investigators announced the arrest. she is there live. katie? >> ama and dan, the fire lines are holding tonight and the fire is mostly contained in an area that is outside of town

and they will be staying at the twin pine casinos. tonight is full of cheers and tears. on 17 counts of arson. >> it is hard to look at that man and know he caused all of this. especially i have very dear friends who have helped me a lot and they lost everything. >> andrea feels like so many do. >> love and anger and a lot of relief. >> he is responsible. bernice lacey's house survived and she learned it at the community meeting. >> i feel grateful. >> while others wait.

>> they sparked the clayton fire near clayton creek road east of highway 29. 179 structures were destroyed. >> he is suspected it for other fires dating back a year and a half. >> we have a great community and everybody steps up really good. >> with his arrest people say they will sleep easier tonight even if it is not in their own bed. in lake county, abc7 news. >> tonight the governor has declared a state of emergency in lake county. right now it is just 5% contained. it destroyed 175 structures. abc7 news reporter laura an -- anthony spoke with people

devastated by the destruction. >> reporter: he hasn't seen his house yet, but he has a pretty good idea what happened to it given it was in the middle of this on sunday. >> all of a sudden at 10:30 the sirens went off and the helicopters and the flames and everybody got serious really quick. >> as long as the lives are safe and the animals they got their animals out and everything. everything else is rebuildable. >> they live on winchester street a few blocks from downtown lower lake. here on one side of the street home after home is gone. jose alvarado and his family moved here a few months ago. >> judging from here what do you think? >> it looks like it is pretty gone. >> while the flames have moved on for now, the conditions here are ripe for more

trouble. >> we have had five years of drought. this area is bone dry. we have had extreme fire behavior in the last several fires in this area. >> with the uncertainty comes the waiting for families like this one evacuated from lower lake. they and their animals are safe. but they have no idea whether their house near anderson marsh is still standing. >> from what i heard last it was moving away from anderson marsh. the wind can change at any point. >> it is hard to see this area go through this again. i am standing in an area where the homes were lost. they were the same homes spared last year. laura anthony, abc7 news. one woman today thought her pains' home was gone. aim mooy hollyfield checked on it for her. >> the home was not on an

official list of lower lake homes still standing. she took the address and went to check it out and came back with some amazing news. >> all is good. thank you. >> there are 4,000 people waiting for news about their homes. firefighters say they are working as quickly as they can to keep them informed. tonight nearly 700 pg&e customers are without power including some in the evacuation area. they asked the utility crews to turn off some power lines to keep the firefighters safe as they put out the fire. the flames damaged at least 20 power poles and other essential equipment yesterday. a fire is burning in an area that burned homes last year. the area is dry because of the drought. for more let's head over to sandhya patel.

sandhya? >> ama, look at what the drought situation is like in the lake county area. this shade is covering clear lake. you combine that with the heat and the low humidity. that's why the firefighters have had to deal with some rough conditions. the winds are not an issue. over the next 24 hours the understand with are expected to remain light. they are shifting so much that they will have to cope with the changing wind direction. as you look at the temperatures they also have to deal with the hot conditions on tuesday, wednesday and thursday with some low humidity. they will get some relief as we head into the week end. i'll be back with a detailed look at our forecast coming up. ama? >> the salvation army has sent several mobile kitchens to feed the thousands of evacuees and firefighters. they will be served at twin pines casino and the seventh day adventist church in lake port.

concourse level. three men attacked a man in the bathroom assaulting him and demanding money. >> he was able to escape and made it to the tenderloin station and we asked if anyone was in the bathroom. we saw the person being assaulted so give us a call. >> they have plenty of security cameras and they are looking at video for clues. not only for the mugging, but the homicide that occurred two days prior. that's when somebody discovered a body in the emergency stairwell. the camera inside has been spray painted over but they said leads are coming in. it was too much for shoppers taking a break from the mall. >> i don't want to be in a situation where i would fear for my life. >> it doesn't seek like a good time. they need to get things under control. >> they declined to comment on security, but they say last week's incident is no way to

stay away. >> we encourage people to come and visit. it is still a safe place to go when you factor in the thousands and thousands of people that go to westfield every day. >> words of assurances that may or may not con vips the public. convince the public. lilian kim, abc7 news. in antioch police arrested a man who was taking selfies with a stolen loaded gun today. someone called police after they say he pulled out the weapon and posed in front of the quick stop on sycamore drive. they found andre bryant with a loaded gun in his waist band. and they are telling women to avoid carrying purses. in the past six weeks there has been one purse snatching a week in parking center parking lots. in each case someone driving a car slows down and grabs the purse off the shoulder of the victim. the targets are usually older women and in some cases they were hurt. stay here with us. students head back to school this week in san jose with an

developing news in san jose. a double shooting left one person dead near north white and mckee roads. two males showed up at regional medical center and both shot. one died at the hospital and the other is expected to recover. well, it is back to school in the south bay this week. it is the first back to school under a new california law that changed sack vaccination requirements. parents can no longer opt out due to their personal beliefs. you have to get vaccinated one mother is refusing to comply. katie has that story from san jose. >> karen brown's daughters are getting their flu shots. they are fully sack uh nateed -- fully vaccinated for school. >> i don't think it should affect an entire group of

encephalitis. it causes serious side effects and that's the disease. it is not the immunization. >> san jose unified starts back on wednesday. a student without their vaccinations and without a medical waiver will be sent home. abc7 news. >> another medical report tonight and a warning taking acetaminophen can increase your chances of having an unruly child later. mothers who use pain relievers like tylenol report children with more behavioral problems as 7-year-olds. the study is in the journal jama pediatrics. acetaminophen has long been considered safe for pregnant women. baton rouge, louisiana is in a state of emergency. there is a fear that floodwaters will continue to rise. san francisco company air b and b is helping out. it allows hosts to offer homes to flooding evacuees free of charge. air b and b has mailed

everybody with a property in the affected area with a request to help. let's turn our attention to the forecast. when will the heat return? >> sandhya patel has a look ahead for us. hi, sandhya. >> how about as early as tomorrow? it was nice while it lasted. a brief drop in the temperatures and we hillary verse the trend -- will reverse the trend. we are showing you where the fog is along the north bay and the coast and it is pushing in toward the east bay. visibility is half a mile in half moon bay. be careful during the commute. this is how it will look across parts of the bay area. this is from our exploratorium camera at pier15. notice the buildings are fuzzy because of the fog. so tomorrow morning you just may need a little extra time to get to work. you are also getting a foggy view of san francisco. 56 in the city and 58 in oakland. it is 61 in san jose. pretty mild and 62 mountain view. mid50sin half moon bay and

mor ban hill. morgan hill. it is typical this time of year. petaluma. 63 in livermore. it is looking toward the port of oakland and you will have to deal with the foggy conditions at the coast and the bay along with spotty morning drizzle. warmer afternoons the next few days and a cooler pattern over the weekend. as you get going just theng about an extra layer to keep you warm because it will start off to keep you cool. looking at where the fog is sitting around the coast and around the bay. you may be taking the little ones off to school and do be careful as the fog will reduce the visibility and it will be cool enough to where they will need a sweatshirt and jacket. part of the north bay and along the entire coast, but as the day goes on we will see clearing from the bayside communities and along the

coastline we will hang on to the fog. inland we are looking at plenty of sun for your tuesday afternoon. 83 in san jose and 90 in gilroy and 81 in santa clara. 72 in santa cruz. 77 in palo alto and 76 redwood city. 59 on the coast in pacifica and the fog will linger. same thing in daly city. north bay communities will see the temperatures in the 70s to the 80s in many areas and 90s around ukiah and cloverdale and clear lake 85 santa rosa and east bay is a nice mild one and 73 oakland and 78 fremont. 92 in concord and 93 in livermore. as the giants take on the pirate itself should be a nice evening, but a little on the cool and breezy side. 57 degrees and dropping to pie 5.

accu-weather seven-day forecast will feature some heat. midto upper 90s inland. it does ease as we head into the weekend. low 90s along the inland areas and low to mid60s though at the beaches and as we head into the week end. we will see those 80s returning to the bay area which of course will be much needed by then. ama and dan? >> thank you very much, sandhya. >> next on abc news at 11:00, just another day on-the-job for these first responders who show they save lives no matter what.

first responders are used to saving human lines, but one crew in connecticut were working to save a squirrel whose head was stuck in a yogurt cup. the squirrel bounced around to escape, but couldn't shake it. the crew members used a blanket to calm the squirrel and then topped off the cup. the squirrel scampered off into the woods seemingly unhurt. poor thing. >> look at that leaping around like a bull frog. all in a day's work. >> we have rick quan in for larry beil.
