california as 82,000 people rush to escape massive flames. tonight a raging wildfire is burning out of control as the main route between los angeles and las vegas is forced to shutdown. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. it is east of los angeles in san bernadino county. it is up to 18,000 acres right now. >> katie is unfolding the sweation -- is looking at the unfolding situation. >> 18,000 acres is a number number and the fire is burning out of control. we have live pictures for you. thousands of people are under evacuation order and they say this fire is an imminent threat to public safety and rail traffic and home. new video on the ground of structures on fire. a san bernadino fire spokesman says they have not determined how many structures were

destroyed, but a dozen buildings including homes are gone along with the historic diner. part of interstate 15, the main route between los angeles and las vegas is closed. they have been stranded for hours and then there are those who won't leave. >> that fire is moving really fast. >> i am going to stick it out. >> i can't believe the flames. it is scary. >> mandatory evacuations for all. don't come up and everybody leave. >> it erupted at 10:30 this morning. it is sometimes called a fire nado. you can see why. 9 flames twist up in a column. they are learning six san bernadino firefighters became trapped by the fire at one point. they had to shelter in place in a structure and two firefighters were hurt. get this. they were taken to the hospital, treated and released and then went back to the fire line to defend the structures. at last count 700 firefighters

and 10 air tankers and eight helicopters and also schools had to be evacuated today and three districts have closed tomorrow in san bernadino. governor brown has declared a state of emergency in the county and the fire is zero percent contained at this hour. live in the newsroom, abc7 news. >> katie, thank you for the update. the heat is a real problem. we want to continue our live team coverage with a look at the weather conditions. >> sandhya patel has that for us. we will check in with her in a few moments. for now though we do want to move on to the wildfire that is burning in lake county. abc7 news was in lower leak where residents returned to their homes only to find they lost everything. >> it shows where the clayton fire has spread to. right now the flames are 35% contained. cornell bernard picks up the

coverage. cornell? >> reporter: many are returning homes to scenes like this. neighborhoods in charred rubble. we are in downtown lower lake where some folks were allowed in briefly to check their properties and they could not believe what they found. >> they didn't deserve this. >> reporter: it is the homecoming star and michael skidmore never wanted. they are seeing the devastation of the clayton fire up close. >> i have nothing left. it is all destroyed. >> their rental cottages burned to the ground when a wall of flames sent them running for their lives. >> i was lucky to get my chickens and my dog, but i am looking for my three cats. >> their auto repair shop is the only thing still standing. down the street, duane barbick is remembering what was. >> it is like watching the titanic go down except the house go up in smoke. >> his pride and joy, a victorian built in 1887 in

live in lake county, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> cornell, thanks very much. the man accused of setting the fire once trained to fight fires as a prison inmate. melanie woodrow talked with family members who are not surprised by his arrest. >> he will make his first court appearance on wednesday. he is facing 17 counts of arson in connection with numerous fires in lake county over the past year including the clayton fire which destroyed homes and businesses. >> it is hard to say whether or not this could have been prevented. this individual was intent on causing a fire. we do not know at this point what his intent was when he set this fire. >> it doesn't really surprise me. >> alex young is his cousin. >> it is hard to even think about. even as a person that someone could even do that. >> investigators are not saying what evidence they have linking him to the fires. by phone his court uh .ed

attorney said he would -- appointed attorney said he would not see them until wednesday. they gave him a list of the prior charges between 1997 and 2015. crimes range from dui to drugs and carrying a concealed weapon. a source with the state department of corrections also tells the i team's dan noyes that he learned to be a firefighter in the correctional center. he worked as an inmate firefighter from april to july of 2007. now nine years later he is accused of starting fires in lake county. >> they set a fire and then bring trouble to people. hundreds of them are out of their homes now and don't even have a place to live. >> melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> download the abc7 news app to stay on top of the wildfires burning in san bernadino and lake counties. enable the push alerts to get

updates immediately. >> we have updates from east oakland. they are outside a liquor store they believe may have been set on fire during a standoff. they were called in after 9:00 tonight. a man possibly armed with a knife was throwing items inside. police don't know if he is still inside that burning building. now to developing news in the south bay where a car crash caused an explosion, fire and natural gas scare. it started around 8:45 on west san carlos street a few blocks west of downtown. ab c 7 news reporter -- abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian is getting this situation under control. lisa? >> reporter: ama, the fire is now out. they are keeping a close eye on things. it started when the driver of that black pick up truck crashed into a gas meter on the side of the tattoo shop. officials are not sure what

caused the driver to crash, but they say he is cooperating with police. once the truck hit the meter, the gas escaped and the fire immediately started. >> it looks like a blowtorch coming off the gas meter. from our perspective, we know what is happening at that point. that's why we allow it to burn longer. once we shut it off, now it is just a structure fire. >> it spread across the shingle roof building which houses not only a tattoo parlor, but music, recording and rehearsal studios as well. several people were inside when the fire started. >> if our door had been locked we wouldn't have known for a couple minutes or until we started smelling smoke. >> because someone came in to warn you. >> otherwise we wouldn't have been playing and we might have gotten trapped. we got lucky that we were able to get out of the building. >> like i said, several people

chances. it is very difficult to tranquilize an alligator from a distance. >> someone released the gator into the wild after keeping it illegally as a pet. let's turn our attention to the weather forecast. of course the conditions on the fire lines around california are critical. >> sandhya patel is tracking it all. >> it is hot and dry conditions the next couple days for both the fires. the clayton fire in the lower lake area and the blue cut fire in southern california. here is a look at the time lapse from earlier today. it is hard to see sue toe tower the marine layer is about 1600 feet deep. it remains shallow, but not as shallow as it was earlier today. the fog made it into santa rosa and it is socked in around oakland and we are dealing with gray skies along the coastline. half moon bay a mile and a

land, but not as hot. we are noticing the temperatures are barely close to 90 degrees. 60s at the beaches and mild to warm conditions expected for saturday. this will be much nicer conditions. 80s inland and 60s at the coast. we will go with hot conditions. low 60s at the coast and cooling begins on thursday and continues on friday. a summer spread low 60s to low 90s for the end of the workweek. and a wide range of conditions on saturday and sunday. upper 80s inland to upper 50s and 60s. at the coastline the temperatures will dip even more. on monday, 86 degrees inland. upper 50s along the coastline. really what the firefighters need is a strong marine push and obviously light breezes and cooler weather. that's not going to happen at either of those fires anytime soon. ama and dan. >> thank you, sandhya. >> well, it is the end of an era on the las vegas strip. stay with u

while i was on a combat patrol my c in baqubah, iraq,nned out. a rocket-propelled grenade took my arm off at the shoulder. when i came home, i felt alone. my family was around me, but i couldn't talk to them about what i'd seen and what i'd done. i remember just thinking, man, the way i am right now, i don't want to live. i was discharged from the army, and i've been working with the wounded warrior project since 2007. warriors don't have to be severely wounded to be with the wounded warrior project. we do have a lot of guys that have post-traumatic stress disorder.

being able to share your story, i guess it kind of helps you wrap your mind around what did happen over there. just because you've left the military doesn't mean your life is over, because when these guys are coming home, i'm kind of leading and training them, instead of for combat, i'm leading and training them to heal. and if i come away with anything from the wounded warrior project, it's them giving my life back. my name is norbie, and yes, i do suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, but i'm okay. the end of an era on the las vegas strip. it was imploded to make way for a convention expansion.
