police station in a walk of shame, returning to their hotel rooms after spending the past 24 hours questioned by authorities. stemming from the four men's claims they were robbed at gunpoint outside the olympic village sunday, police saying there was no robbery. federal brazilian police sources saying at least one of the four olympic swimmers are seen breaking down a bathroom door and getting into a fight with a security guard. rewind to tuesday and the controversial interview lochte first gave to nbc news. >> a guy pulled out his gun. he cocked it, put it to my forehead. he said, "get down." i put my hands up like whatever. >> reporter: lochte saying the gun was only pointed in his direction. returning to the u.s. on wednesday. thursday night, conger and bentz seen at the airport to finally come home. sources who spoke to all four swimmers tell abc news they were, in fact, held up by armed gunmen until the gunmen were paid hundreds of dollars which they say is verified by police video. members of the ioc conducting

their own investigation and talking about forgiveness. >> let's give these kids a break. sometimes you take actions that you later regret. >> reporter: rio's chief of police saying the athletes should apologize, telling brazilian tv network, globo, the only truth is they say they were drunk. and sources close to the four swimmers are saying the brazilian government is lying about what really happened and they're blowing this whole thing out of proportion. >> all that said, the usoc has apologized to the people of brazil and of rio, and we have a producer who is on board that plane at this hour with them. he said they were the first to board. they are seated at the back of the plane. he spoke with one of them. he said the last 24 to 48 hours have been quite the ordeal. >> it's interesting. there are a lot of people jumping on the team, the four involved at least, outright calling them liars, but it does

seem like the account they gave, there's some truth to it. how much is still up for debate, of course, and between brazilian authorities and what comes out as they continue to interview the swimmers remains to be seen. >> and the video shows that they did have a gun pointed in their direction. they did have their hands up at some point. >> money did change hands. and the brazilians were saying they offered the money to mitigate the damage at the gas station. but offering money with a gun pointed to you -- >> and when you're wasted. a whole different matter. let's move on, shall we? donald trump and his running mate are expected to go to the flood zone in louisiana. trump told a crowd the state is "very, very special to me." a spokesman for the louisiana governor said he's not been contacted by the trump campaign. president obama has come under fire for not cutting short his vacation to console flood victims.

they've made rare helicopter drops in the middle of the night. though mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted, and a major freeway reopened, some people are still being told to get out. >> if it comes up toward that crest, we're gone. >> reporter: thursday the fire once again coming dangerously close to neighborhoods. angela adams not feeling it was necessary to leave. >> as soon as it comes to the top of the hill over there and starts to come down, i was packed and ready to go. >> reporter: fire crews facing another night of grueling conditions as they try to get ahold of this massive fire. in california, abc news. a north texas couple is suing the maker of crocs after their toddler's foot got caught in an escalator. according to the lawsuit, the escalator tore off an extensive section of skin requiring emergency surgery. it claims the crocs are poorly designed. crocs says it does not comment

on pending legislation. the gossip website gawker is shutting down. it's due to the invasion of privacy lawsuit by hulk hogan. guamer filed for bankruptcy after it was ordered to pay hogan $140 million in damages for publishing a sex video. and billionaire peter thiel revealed his private campaign against the site. this week gawker agreed to sell to see univision. and uber is rolling out self-driving cars in pittsburgh. people will be able to summon the cars with a smart phone app. the cars will come with human backup drivers to handle any unexpected situations because uber is still testing the service, and the rides will be free. twitter has launched its own war on terror. the website has suspended more than 200,000 accounts for terror-related activity. the spike in suspensions follows a string of recent attacks around the world. after facing accusations of not doing enough to stop terrorism on its network, twitter increased daily suspensions by

this plane made an emergency landing in istanbul after an engine caught fire. more than 300 people were on board the qatar airways jet. no one was hurt. former nfl star darin sharper has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for drugging and raping women. sharper's voice broke as he told the judge he would like to apologize a thousand times to the women he harmed and to his friends and family. he said he's trying to figure out why he did it. now to new developments in the deadly water slide accident in kansas. >> the women who were in the raft with the young boil who was killed are speaking out as we learn more about the investigation. linsey davis has the latest. >> reporter: more questions about just what caused the death of ten-year-old caleb schwab as he road down the world's tallest water slide at this kansas city water park. for the first time, the two women in the raft with him are speaking out, both suffered facial injuries. the duo released a statement through their lawyers saying,

"being mothers ourselves, we can only hope his family can find some comfort in knowing we're doing everything we know how to do to stop something from happening again to any other family." the ride, which translates to insane in german features multiperson rafts. it goes up to speeds of 70 miles per hour. [ screams ] each raft is supposed to carry between 400 and 550 pounds. police initially said one person weighed 140 pounds, another 170, and caleb would have had to weigh 90 pounds to make the 400-pound raft limit. police say weight taken at the hospital after the accident said one person weigh ed 275 pounds, another 197, and a third 73 pounds putting the combined weight at 545 pounds. abc news, new york. >> apparently there were issues

good friday morning to you. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. we start with breaking news overnight. two olympics swimmers heading back to the u.s. after testifying about claims that they were robbed at gunpoint. >> they were detained in a rio police station for about 24 hours. they were allowed to board a plane late last night. here's a new video of gunnar bentz and jack conger on the plane. they're due to land in miami early this morning. hours earlier the u.s. olympics committee apologized to brazil. authorities in rio saying four u.s. swimmers including ryan lochte lied about the armed robbery. >> the incident hit the headlines because of statements from headline, but a series of videos paint a little bit of a different story. >> reporter: as first reported by abc news, brazilian police saying the now-infamous robbery was fictional. police saying the videos fill in the missing time line. the police chief saying it was all made up.

also the first images we've seen of the four entering the club, club france, around 1:45 a.m. lochte snatching this inside the club around 2:35 a.m. the swimmers say they left the club at 4: but this video was stamped 5:47 a.m. they arrive at the gas station just after 6:00 a.m. this surveillance video obtained by abc news appears to show them going toward the bathroom. they kicked down the door and vandalized the bathroom. the four swimmers continued on here back toward their taxi. at this point, they allegedly ripped a poster off the wall before being confronted by the security guard. it shows them walking toward the gas pumps trying to get into the wrong cab and then theirs. they're confronted by a man in black who comes to their window and motions for them to get out of the car. police say he was a gas station

security officer. you see what appears to be gunnar bentz reach to his wallet, take out money and handing it to the man. then you see them walking off camera. one swimmer with his hands in the air. sources who spoke to all four swimmers insist their version holds true. they point to a three-minute chunk of missing video which they claim would show them being held up at gunpoint and bullied to sit down on the curb. the video returns and you see them putting their hands up. lochte standing to get something to his pocket, appearing to hand it to a man in block. -- in black. they're held there by security until 6:20 a.m. sources saying the men were forced to hand over all their money, about $400, by the armed men who were not the place. 40 minutes later they're back at the village just before 7:00 a.m. seemingly unfazed. whatever happened, police saying it wasn't this. >> a guy pulled out his gun,

cocked it, put it to my forehead. >> he said, "get down." i put my hands up. whatever. >> reporter: we were there as bentz and conger were walked in for questioning. the two men are around here. what the swimmers said, according to the police, there was no robbery. the sources who spoke to the swimmer calling that an outright lie, saying none of the swimmers have changed their story. >> it's interesting because yesterday it seemed the authorities were saying this was completely fabricated without anybody knowing where it came from, and it seems the account is fairly close. >> there's some matter of truth. >> and i wonder how much of this may have been a misunderstanding, especially with the language barrier? >> i think there was a lot of misunderstanding. first of all, you have the usoc apologizing for this. but as you look at this videotape, a lot of what the guys said is true. >> there was a man who was a

security guard. they said someone with a badge who looked like a police officer who did hold them at gunpoint. admitted money changed hands. >> there was a little bit of truth at the end of the day. >> definitely the investigation is going to be ongoing to see how much of it was a lie and how much of it may be a misunderstanding. we are going to keep everybody updated. >> and two guys on a plane who can't wait for 6:50 to get here this morning. donald trump is expressing regret for some of the things he said. he was uncharactriesically mellow as he read remarks in charlotte. and after a year of making controversial comments, he appeared to have a moment of contrition. >> sometimes in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don't choose the right words. or you say the wrong thing.

i have done that. and believe it or not, i regret it. and i do regret it. particularly where it may have caused personal pain. >> the clinton campaign dismisses the remarks as, "simply a well-written phrase." the campaign is calling on trump to specify which comments he regrets. >> trump and mike pence are expected to visit the flood zone in louisiana today. the spokesman for the governor said his office was not contacted by the trump campaign. the spokesman says trump was welcome to come to louisiana but not for a photo op. instead, he proposed trump consider volunteering or making a sizable donation to the flood relief fund. and an editorial in a louisiana is calling for president obama to cut short his vacation and confront flood victim face to face.

the white house says mr. obama is getting frequent updates on the crisis. the clinton foundation will no longer accept foreign or corporate donations if hillary clinton wins the election. bill clinton also renounced he would resign from the board of the charitable foundation and stop giving paid speeches until the election. he wants to avoid the possibility of second-guessing or any other issues should his wife become president. now to california where weary crews are battling another wildfire. the ray fired burned at least 600 acres in santa barbara. it's forced the evacuation two of campgrounds there. it is now 20% contained. aircraft being diverted from other fire to provide aerial assistance there. further south, some residents are being allowed to go back home as crews make some progress in the blue cut fire. the fire is 22% contained. officials still can't say how many homes were destroyed or damaged by that one. back to the olympics. the united states has hit triple

digits sporting an even 100 medals after thursday's events. >> the u.s. picked up seven medals on the day. five of them were gold bringing the number up to 35. the biggest win came in an event where the americans stayed alive for a medal thanks to a second chance. >> reporter: a sweet reprieve for the americans who got a second chance at the women's 4x100 relay. allison felix dropped the baton after being bumped by a runner. the u.s. got a do-over. the americans raced all alone against the clock and were fast enough to make the finals today. it was the u.s. versus france in the women's basketball semis. the americans saying good-bye to the french. trouncing them 86-67. back to track and field and ashton eaton of the u.s. taking gold in the final event of the men's decathlon. the 1,500 meters. he becomes the first repeat decathlon champion since it was

done in 1952. eaton takes the honorary title of world's greatest athlete. and more gold for the united states in the women's 400 meter hurdle. delilah muhammad dashes to victory, the first american woman to win gold in the event. ashley spencer barrels her way to bronze. usain bolt proved again he's the world's fastest man. he ran to gold in the men's 200-meter with an easy win. his third straight olympic medal in the 200. he's running in pursuit of a third straight triple. he just needs gold in tonight's 4x100 relay. >> that's probably just a thing that's already written. usain bolt will probably win that one. >> inevitable it seems. we've jinxed peoples like that before, not we, but announcers. forecaster victory prematurely. >> he's one for the history books, usain bolt. he's probably the biggest star in is in jamaica. he's the highest paid athlete

officers to be fired saying they lied about the fatal shooting of laquan mcdonald. here's abc's pierre thomas. >> reporter: the seven chicago officers facing firing of the now incident seen in this dash cam video. laquan mcdonald running down the street. he did have a knife, but the video shows him moving away from officers before he's gunned down. an autopsy finding he was shot 16 times. chicago's police superintendent concluding that the video contradicts the officers' story that mcdonald posed an immeant threat. >> he had no choice, he had to fire. >> reporter: the shooting happened nearly two years ago. the video was not released until more than a year later. the controversy comes at a difficult moment for the city. homicides surging, and police often facing violent criminals. this video shows an officer risking his life. >> i'm hit. i'm hit. >> reporter: his face grazed by a bullet during a high speed

chase and gun battle. we see them under fire, and at the same time, allegations of a police coverup and the murder of a suspect. abc news, washington. >> officer van dyke, by the way, has been charged with murder. and just before that video was released, the video being released late last year, they fought to keep it secret for some time. >> the justice department is now investigating whether the police department has a systematic history of violating citizens' rights. a lot of questions to be answered. coming up, the story behind this heartbreaking image seen around the world. first, lebron james, a champion on the court and off. how he's helping thousands of children and their parents. you're watching "world news now." tried various outreach projects. in 2011 they hit on this. what if a group of third graders were closely supported in school, month after month, year after year, all the way up to graduation? >> the children start in third grade. that's the key time when we start to see children fall through the cracks, and we start to see the achievement gap broadening. we can grab and save these kids. >> reporter: last summer lebron raised that expectation even higher. announcing a partnership with the university of akron that will provide college scholarships for kids in his program who graduate high school. >> it's amazing. it gives you that sense of light for your own kid, because we didn't have it. so to know that she's going to have that is great. >> we have a lot of parents here that didn't graduate high school. not only are we tracking our

kids here to make them become better, we're lending a helping hand to a lot of parents who didn't graduate high school and putting them in programs where they can get their high school diploma. >> it always kind of haunted me like go back to school, go back to school and stuff. so when i got the letter in the mail for the orientation for the ged class, i was jumping up and down like it's my turn. >> it's great. you can see the difference it makes. i went through a similar program like that through a liz claiborne program. when i was coming up in school. she support a group of students. it was called the acorn students. the other kids called us nerds. she supported us going to see different colleges and straight through high school, and sadly, as you see me here today, it didn't work out that well. i failed. >> you were a nerd? did they see your dance skills? i can't believe that. >> that's what did it. >> lebron welcomed a new class of third graders, and the program will add more than 1200 students. >> it's a wonderful concept. there are a lot of kids that

feigen vandalized a gas station bathroom after a night of drinking. they were questioned by guards and paid for the damage, and then they left. >> the story started to unravel because of surveillance video from the gas station. police say the part about the armed robbery was made up, and authorities are recommending charges against lochte and feigen. the u.s. olympic committee has apologized to brazil and the city of rio saying the swimmers' behavior was not acceptable, but it's important to point out -- >> look that video. >> there are sources close to the swimmers saying they're not recanting their story. they're saying they were held at gunpoint. they are saying it was a security guard from the gas station who was trying to get them to wait for police and recover damages after they vandalized the bathroom. >> in essence, a shakedown, not a robbery. take a look at the videotape, and that's how some people may look at it. >> the new york media having a field day, as you would expect. this is the new york "daily news" for today.

>> reporter: "get him down. carry him," the medics shout as the young boy on this video shot by syrian activists is rushed to the waiting ambulance. but with so many more to rescue, the 5-year-old, omran is his name, sits alone for just a moment, and then that instant, the single still photograph capturing his innocence. it is an image that says "this is a child like my own." doctors say his physical injuries were minor and the rest of his family survived, but surviving another day in syria is never guaranteed. the five-year war has left at least 100,000 children dead. millions of other children remain inside the war-torn nation just like omran. this happened in aleppo where syrian government forces with the help of russians have been bombing rebel groups. in the last few weeks alone,

hundreds of civilians have been killed, as well. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. back in the country, new developments about the zika virus here in the u.s. at least two cases of the virus have been diagnosed in miami beach. it's believed both cases were transmitted by local mosquitoes. 35 people have been infected so far in florida with most of the cases in an area of north miami. a violinist showing off his skills hours after brain surgery. now hundreds are opening their hearts and wallets to help him. >> one day after having a brain tumor removed, he played outside the roch esther -- rochester hospital where he had the operation to inspire other patients and thank his supporters. the supporters have responded with a gofundme account to help pay his bills. it's raised more than $17,000. >> he sounds great. listen. ♪
