generally speaking. >> reporter: the sky is hazy. it smells like smoke and the air quality has eyes watering and people sneezing but there's no fire burning around here. what's going on? >> the wind, specifically, has been drawing smoke into this area from some of the other fires in the state. most of this smoke is likely from the fire down in monterey county. >> reporter: smoke from other wildfires now lingers in the bay area prompting a spare the air alert. our abc7 news tower cameras shows a thick haze of mount diablo and other landmarks. he wanted to show them the iconic san francisco skyline. >> we went up on the oakland hill just to get to the center and couldn't see much because it was so hazy. >> reporter: robert marshall, the contra costa county fire marshal. >> it is smoke from out of the area and encourage them to wait until they see fire and smoke

before they call 9-1-1. >> reporter: he says people with respiratory problems should stay inside and avoid being too active. alyssa harrington, abc7 news. >> all right. and now let's go to abc7 anchor now. spencer? >> reporter: some of the smoke will continue moving through the bay area but at first, it was the cause of increasing winds. here's live doppler 7 hd. here's a satellite image of the smoke. it's the chimney fires directly to our south and some coming from fires over in the south central part of the state. but we do have increasing winds in the bay area that will mix out some of the smoke as we head into the weekend and give us better air quality and we see breezes gust to 31 miles per hour in fairfield. 21 miles per hour in concord. and steady winds in san francisco. so we have improving air quality but it takes a couple of days to get back to a more helpful level. >> thanks a lot. updating the fire is contributing to the hazy

conditions. the chimney fire in san louis is now almost 12,000 acres. containment remaining at 33% and 45 buildings including four homes have been destroyed. the fire in monterey county started four weeks ago today and is still only 50% contained. burned more than 80,000 acres, 57 homes and a bulldozer operator fighting that fire lost his life. lower lake residents can now go home. evacuation orders lifted a short time ago. destroyed 300 structures, almost two-thirds of homes. a suspected arsonist under arrest for starting that fire on saturday. >> download the abc7 news app to stay on top of the wildfires and get updates as they happen. the husband of a woman struck by a falling tree limb said his wife will be able to walk again. she was struck in a city park. and lonnie from washington

square park in north beach where the accident happened. lonnie? >> reporter: yeah, this is where the accident happened and the city is in the process of inspecting all the trees in san francisco. they haven't released the results of that inspection and the victim's husband spoke with us this afternoon sharing with us how his family is coping with this. >> so worrying. >> it's still processing everything his wife is going through right now. exactly one week ago, he received a terrible shocking call. >> the police told me that my wife got hit by a big branch. >> reporter: 36-year-old here in washington square park watching her 2 daughters play. when a large 100 pound tree branch fell and landed on her head. she was rushed to the hospital where she's undergone multiple

surgeries. >> they show me the picture of the backbone. like split in half. so scary. >> reporter: he said his wife is in a lot of pain right now. >> i told her not to worry. just don't think about anything else. just relax and sleep. >> reporter: recovery will be long and difficult. >> she's not going to walk and probably have to go to a rehab for a long, long time. >> reporter: medical bills are mounting. tan said his wife took care of everything at home while he worked. several non-profits are offering the family help. faces sf is one of them. >> accidents happen every day and we serve and hear different stories every day. >> pretty much afraid to bring them to the same place again. >> reporter: the memory now too painful to return to a park they once enjoyed. in san francisco, lonnie rivera. abc7 news. a woman facing multiple charges after driving the wrong

way on highway 101 crashing head on into another driver killing the female driver. in navarro on san antonio road. a truck driver who didn't see the crash ahead hit both cars and suffered minor injuries. chp officers arrested 47-year-old kristin collier for dui. the union for a bus driver said she was attacked by another driver wants metro transit officials to show more support for her. abc7 news outside of metro headquarters for the protest today. carla ro mmero pulled over when passing driver confronted her. the man punched romero in the face several times before fighting him off. police investigated and cited both people for battery. they want video of the incident to clear her name and more protection for drivers. uni said it's working with police. >> anything like this is challenging. if you have two, it is challenging. and that's why we work with the

police department who can be objective to find out exactly what happened and in this case, you know, we don't want to see an assault against an operator at all. >> romero isn't allowed to drive right now. she's expected in court in october. the state supervisor trying to address a dispute over the head for the death in fremont. back on the staff, a new leader as fall classes begin on monday. david louis is live to explain. david? >> reporter: eric, the situation here is probably a boiling point. all the teachers and staff members in the gym are here because they say their superintendent is ineffective and hope the only person they know to fire them will agree with them. faculty and staff try to deal with the issues for years and sean who was head of the california school for the death

the building won't be done for another month. >> i can't imagine being a freshman now and my dorm is not ready. >> instead of savor university officials say it's not an ideal situation but safety and security is top of mind as they finish the new residence hall. >> all the little things need to be done as well. doorknobs, fixtures. so when residents move in, it's completed, safe, secure environment for them and the construction workers can leave knowing that the job is done. >> reporter: because the temporary building is older, impacted students have part of their housing reduced and some have three to a room. upper class men say it's important to be optimistic. >> it's going to be amazing, better. >> reporter: an early lesson in patients taught to the incoming freshman.

in san jose, cr. guidelines for motorcyclists who split lanes. lane splitting is a legal gray area in california. though law enforcement has long permitted it. that's when motorcycles pass other vehicles by riding between them. the assembly voted in may to allow it with a 50-mile-an-hour speed limit but the senate watered down the bill before approving it. >> angry terry if i, terrified apartments in deplorable conditions. sued the building on 8th street and judge said they have to repair common bathrooms and the common kitchen they demolished. leslie brinkley live with the story. leslie? >> reporter: i can tell you we're about a half block away from old oakland and a farmer's market across the street. new creameries opened up and this is the building where elderly chinese immigrants live. they say they are afraid and

very upset. cooking in the kitchen. the only common kitchen shared by 34 residents here. also in the kitchen, cockroaches. in the hall, wires. holes in the ceiling. last year, new owners took over the three-story single occupancy building. there are now only 2.5 baths open. others demolished in february with the common kitchen and storage space. they did not want to be identified. >> to go to the bathroom to wait in line. >> yes, the kitchen too. >> they want us to remodel the whole building and rent us to the people that have more money to rent. >> reporter: tenants pay around $400 rent and the conditions prompted some to move out. the representative said they've done a lot of good here installing fire alarms and sprinklers. he says they intended to remodel the kitchen and bathroom only to

be slowed down by the permitting process. >> the inspectors, honestly, were not very helpful in helping us expedite the laundry list. a new inspector and new list created. >> the work they did went over the scope of what their permits allowed. they know they've had to submit new plans. they haven't done it yet. >> reporter: they filed a lawsuit against the owners for harassment. a judge is now calling for the bathrooms and kitchens to be repaired immediately. in fact, new temporary tenants showed up today. canadie canadians rented on airbnb. >> i saw the pictures and said the common areas are dingy. >> reporter: they intended to avoid the common areas. i'mle i'm leslie brinkley. abc7 news. in el grinado, accused of robbing someone they were supposed to be caring for.

the couple went into the 75-year-old's victim's home while sleeping. put a pillow over her head, tied her wrists together and then robbed her. the victim, fortunately, not hurt. the woman was the caretaker. allegedly, a man threw rocks and a lucky store security guard. he was arrested. police asked for tips and apparently got them. california highway patrol investigating a fatal accident in vallejo early this morning. a vehicle drove off the highway and into the water just west of mare island. morgan hill earlier today. and shooting out of the building in east may avenue in hill road. and the car blaze under investigation.

this gradual cooling continuing into monday and overnight, look for lots of low clouds with fog with temperatures mainly in the upper 50s around the bay. low to mid 50s in the inland valleys and here's the forecast animation starting at 9:00 tonight. there's the surge of that marine layer across the bay and punishing wepunisshing well inland. in the east bay around into the south bay and parts of san jose. foggy start but by late morning, back to the coastline with mainly sunny skies inland. and the south bay tomorrow, we'll see high temperatures range from mid 70s to upper 70s in santa clara and 81. 85 in the peninsula. mainly mid 70s from redwood city to mountain view and highs in the upper 50s to about 60 in
