and that is the newspaper stand going over and the next thing i knew, the yellow cab hit the side of the newspaper stand and then it hit the shoe shine stand. >> reporter: she said she saw the operator fly in the air and land on the sidewalk. he was still conscious, she said. people rushed to their aid. she called them the angels of san francisco. and ambulances arrived and they rushed them to trauma centers. the cab driver, she said, stumbled out of the cab and collapsed. he was also critically injured. there were no passengers in the cab, from what we understand. she was just a few feet away and very lucky she made it through the incident. police are investigating, the fire department is investigating. buses are getting through here on market street and as usual, other vehicles are not allowed here at this time of day. a big jam-up of cars, as you could imagine, a lot of people stopping and upset because they

pass by this corner all of the time. reporting live in downtown san francisco, sutter at market, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. now to our other top stories. two little girls killed in a terrible accident. rescue crews today search for them in vain along the russian river. the children were in a truck that crashed into the water. this accident happened in jenner in northern sonoma county. wayne freedman is live in jenner for us tonight with the story. wayne? >> reporter: well this is jenner over my shoulder, along with highway 116. if you look on the side of the road where this happened, there are no skid marks but this road is very narrow and two lanes and notorious for accidents in this spot. there is no guard rail. just a narrow shoulder. and this is the spot where the truck hit the road and rolled into the river. it is the accident that has taken from jenner not only the two favorite little girls, but also the only two children in town. the girls in this picture,

friends of the family told us. >> they were swinging on the swing yesterday. >> all we've heard -- we don't really know but oall we've hear the car fish tailed and it was wet and foggy. >> the little tucks into car seats were on the way to school where their mother works. no one saw what caused the truck to leave theroad and plunge to the bottom of the russian river. this man heard the crash. >> before i could recognize whether it was a truck or a car and it went bubble, bubble and a bubbles came up and a woman came up shortly after that screaming, my babies. >> the mother did not leave the scene for almost six hours. when the truck hit the water, witnesses jumped in to help without success. the first divers arrived 30 minutes later and found the truck right side up on the bottom, and the little girls

still there and no air pockets. >> i was successful in getting the door open and one of my lifeguards came along and scott was able to get in through the driver's side window which was open or broken and he was able to open the door and then bring the two victims out. >> in this close-knit community with fewer than 100 residents, when one person hurts, they all do. it is a family here. a grieving family tonight. from jenner, in sonoma county, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. a hit-and-run crash sent a mother and her two children to the hospital in vallejo. the family's car rolled over on lincoln alongside interstate 80. highway patrol deliver a tan sedan hit the honda and that forced the car off the freeway. the five-month-old and a 7-year-old both escaped serious injured. chp officers tell us because they were both in child safety seats, so important. and the mother suffered minor

injuries. a man is now in custody after breaking windows with a golf club at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. a b.a.r.t. employee tweeted these photos, take a look, of the damage done. which took place around 1:30 this afternoon. you could see several smashed windows on the stairs heading up to the platform. and the report said the man took swings at a train and it wasn't damaged and no one was hurt. the incident disrupted the station for 30 minutes and we are told the train is back on time. additional police are patrolin the twin peaks area after two tourists were robbed at gunpoint just after 10:00 on the 400 block of twin peaks boulevard. and melanie woodrow is live from the twin peaks overlook with more. melanie? >> reporter: well it is difficult to imagine coming here and not taking a picture of this view. and that is why tourists and people that live here say this robbery is so disappointing. like many newcomers to the bay area, ada is getting to know her

new home one day trip at a time. >> first time up here so we are excited. >> with a backpack in tow. >> our camera equipment and ipad back here. >> reporter: she is making her way up to twin peek peaks. two min on the 400 block were doing the same just after 10:00 last night when someone robbed them at gunpoint as the tourists were taking pictures. >> that is pretty frightening. >> reporter: while some tourists didn't know about the robbery other bay area residents have heard. >> certainly the problems here on twin peaks have been well documented. >> in december of 2015 two robbers stole a man's camera and passport and money. and this past january purse snatchers pepper sprayed a female tourist. still police say robbers act when peaks are rare compared to other tourist spots and most of the crimes here are car break-ins. >> it is sad people can't visit the city and the residents can't visit the land marks like this and feel safe. >> reporter: police say that thieves got away with to tablets, a hard drive and a usb

drive and euros and in response the captain has dedicated the park rapid response team to the area and plain-clothes units. peter and his family here from australia decided to leave the fancy cameras at home and capture they are memories on a cell phone. >> i could carry it. >> easier. and in this case, possibly safer. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. a bicyclist escaped a potentially deadly confrontation in emeryville. it happened last sunday on adda line near 47th street. the man told police he was riding at 1:30 in the morning when a car stopped and yelled at point a gun at him and he heard two gunshots as he pedalled away. this is where a shootout between two cars occurred a week ago and no one was injured in either shooting. cal police want to track down these four men suspects of vandalizing the campus library. they were caught on surveillance stealing and damaging property

at dole library back on june 23rd. the library had closed for the tonight and investigators have not said what they were accused of vandalizing specifically. rescue crews near yosemite find a trio of missing tourists from germany. the two women and a teenage girl were victims of a car crash. the sheriff's department posted pictures on facebook and they were reported missing after the group left san francisco to spend the day in yosemite. a search and rescue team found the three today at the site of the suv crash off of steep embankment near buck meadows as you see on the map. two of the tourists suffered serious injuries. now what would you do if you knew a couple of 82-year-old women who were living out of a converted van? a sonoma county businesswoman has decided she wants to help the two sisters find a home. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana is live in oakmont with this incredible story. sergio. >> reporter: well we made the two sisters this afternoon and

they've spent their lives taking care of people and so now this friend of theirs, a local real estate broker, has tried -- has decided to help the 82-year-old twins out. >> twin sisters sandra and tonya hill have each lived almost unbelievable lives. >> i wrote a book on learning disabilities about my problems and now it is all over the world. >> fantastic. >> one of my patients just handed me $25,000 to write this book. >> agnes moorhead, i met her in a play and she saw me and wanted me to be with her for the rest of her life. >> agnes was famous for playing end ora on bee witched and tanya hill said she was the personal nurse until she died of cancer. and the twin sisters were reunited three months ago under difficult cirqcumstances. >> she was with relatives and they treeded her badly and her land laidly called me and said

tanya is in bad shape. >> she suffered a brain injury so her sister brought her to the county to live and at 82-year-old they share this white conversion van. >> this is your home. >> this is it. >> the space is scramped so a friend, a local real estate broker is determined to find them a home. >> they bring in enough to pay rent, food and utilities. but they don't bring in enough to qualify for rental. >> reporter: sue has volunteered toco sign a lease for them and launched a go fund me page to help with deposits and moving costs. >> i imagine it would be nicer to have a bed to sleep on. >> oh, definitely. that is our goal. >> it is a modest goal they hope to achieve. >> reporter: in san jose, sergio quintana, abc 7 news. a legal case goes forward against one of san francisco largest landlords. is the academy of art thumbing its nose at the law.

carolyn tyler joins us lits live outside of superior court. there is late news on the case. >> reporter: the judge has put a hold on discovery, that is the evidence-gathering portion of the case. she is doing that while she considers the academy's motion

to dismiss the lawsuit. the city attorney said they are confident this is a temporary pause that will be lifted that the lawsuit will resume in september. at least 23 of the academy of arts 40 buildings are out of fliens according -- compliance according to the city. properties with intentional permit violation. the for-profit college has 8,000 students and is accused of illegally gobbling up real estate for the past decade. >> and that has i think exacerbated our housing crisis here in san francisco and at the same time taken a lot of office space that is at a premium right now, off the market to be used for students facilities when it wasn't zoned to do so. >> reporter: city attorney dennis herrera calls the academy one of the city's most notorious land use scoff laws but they've been working with the planning

commission since 2007 and recently received an environmental impact report that will allow the permitting process to move forward. >> you think the case should just go away because they now have -- >> i think it could be resolved in a way that is acceptable to the city and acceptable to the academy. >> reporter: planning commissioner said the academy has touted the law and should be forced to pay the price. >> moving forward, the best of all worlds is if they pay for their faults and are able to legalize many of their uses, consistent with the law, i think we all benefit. >> reporter: the academy attorney said fines are controversial but the school may be willing to give back some student housing for low income housing for the city. in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. a bill aimed at fighting climate change moved one step closer toward becoming state law today. the assemble voted to extend california toxic emission

reduction goals today 42-29 vote following a heated debate in sacramento. >> harmful emissions is going down and the economy is going up. less pollution is standing up for your constituents and a better economy is standing up for your constituents. >> it is pure fantasy is what you are saying. you are talking about a fantasy land. you're drinking the cool aid. >> the calls for reductioning emissions -- reducing emissions in california to the 1990 levels by 2020 and by 40% of that by 2030. the senate will vote on the bill one more time. the governor has vowed he will sign it. and the governor will now decide if he will be allowed to enjoy a free glass of wine or beer while getting a hair cut. many salons offer complimentary adult beverages but they are breaking the law because they don't have liquor licenses. the state assembly passed the

law yesterday. a new study suggested the berkeley penny per ounce tax on sugary drinks has some switching to water. the study published in the american journal of health shows a 20% decline in consumption since the tax went into affect march of last year. researchers interviewed people in low income areas where obesity and diabetes rates are higher and they have a greater impact on purchasing patterns. the american beverage association said there is no indication that the tax has a measurable impact on public health. well as you probably know back-to-school shopping is big business but it is not too late to save. >> i knew there was a reason i waited. michael finney here. >> and we doll out money this time of year, parents do dread this time of year because all of the school clothes and supplies could leave a hole in the pocket. consumer reports revealed a few simple tips to avoid busting your budget. nancy ortiz already has a list of the school supplies her two

sons need for the start of school. but it is going to cost her. >> about a thousand dollars roughly and that would be including all supplies, including clothing and et cetera. >> reporter: parents spend an average of $674 per child on back-to-school shopping this year. according to the national retail federation. consumer reports offers tips to save time and money on shopping. lesson one, it all starts with proper planning. >> before anything, set a realistic budget for what you went to spend and do a quick inventory at home. make sure you don't buy more of what you already have. >> reporter: more than half of all parents surveyed plan on using mobile devices for some back-to-school shopping. a big chunk of the budget will go toward buying electronics. consumer reports said consider certified refurbished models from reputable retailers like amazon. >> they could be less expensive and if you are buying them for young children who could drop or break them. >> if you prefer new and don't

ever guanaco when is call aid chillingo and is bonding with the mother. here is a closer look. right now the baby is not visible to zoo visitors. they are related to camels and llamas and alpacas. did you notice the coast actually had a little bit of clearing today and it brightened up. well the fog is back long the coast as you check out live doppler 7 hd but it is not going very far inland. i'll explain in just a moment. in the sierra nevada, a few thunderstorms developing south of the lake tahoe area, nothing has developed there in tahoe. if you are traveling up there from the emeryville camera, notice the marine lair, it is about 1300 feet deep so it has compressed and that means tomorrow will be warmer. 63 in san francisco. oakland 67. mountain view 71. san jose 76 degrees. half moon bay 59. but today the coast warmed a few degrees because of a little bit of clearing.

so we had temperatures high so far in the low 60s to the low 90s but most inland areas in the the 80s. a live look from the san jose camera. you notice how it looks there, which is sunny. 69 in santa rosa. napa 72. fairfield and concord and livermore all in the low 80s. and it is a bit hazy from the east bay hills camera toward mt. diablo still dealing with the smoke from the statewide fires. areas of fog and spotty morning drizzle and warmer in the morning and a cooler pattern toward the end of the week. first thing tomorrow morning temperatures begin in the 50s. mild along the coastline. upper 50s and even some of the bayside communities in the upper 50s, far inland north bay valleys do you know to the mid-50s so still need a thin layer as you get going. hour-by-hour forecast showing you what will happen. 7:00 tonight, we have the fog and slow cloudiness along the coast at 5:00 a.m. and notice the green along the morin county coast. looking at spotty drizzle. 5:00 a.m., not in the way of coverage inland and because the

marine layer is not as deep as it has been so quicker burn-off expected. 7:00 a.m. still looking at low clouds and fog but that earlier burnoff will result in slightly milder temperatures and fog will linger near the coastline. as far as the afternoon, here is what it looks like. in the south bay, mid-80s, 82 in san jose. 75 in milpitas. 76 sunnyvale and on the peninsula, looking at low 70s from san mateo to millbrae and half moon bay 64 degrees so a mild day again. 62 in daly city. clouds linger. 66 downtown san francisco and in the north bay, 80 for santa rosa. 76 in it san rafael. 74 vallejo. east bay, if you like this pattern, you are in luck. not much change tomorrow. 71 in oakland. 76 hayward and 73 fremont. inland spot, 91 in antioch. 87 in pleasant ton concord and 89 in livermore. as we look at the temperature trend for santa rosa, average high is 84 degrees. you will run, even though warmer

. some business news tonight. we are learning that solar city plans to lay off 80 workers from the san mateo headquarters and another 28 from the san francisco office. >> they recently merged with tesla. the jobs are in accounting and customer service and sales. but several engineers and a vice president of information technology will also lose jobs. solar city announced the layoffs last week but declined to provide specific numbers. you know the pop-up ads that show up when you are browsing, google is discouraging sites for
