good afternoon. thank you for joining you today. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. larry beil is off this week. we begin with the devastating earthquake in italy. >> they are using bulldozers and bare hands to dig out survivors from a strong earthquake that reduces three italy towns to rubble. at least 159 people are now confirmed dead, the 6.2 earthquake was felt across central italy including rome. ray raimundi is live now with the latest. ray? >> reporter: an active search and rescue is going on at this very hour. the priority for first responders is to try to rescue those who may still be alive. in fact, firefighters are

calling people in the impacted zone to be very quiet. so that they could hear the cries of those trapped underneath the rubble. as the sun sets in central italy -- the desperate search for survivors continues into the night. as first spoerresponders contin pull people from under rubble, the gut-wrenching of those who perished covered in blankets, children among the dead, this image capturing a nun sitting in front of one of the bodies. the sister describes her daring escape. >> i tried to hide myself underneath the bed. and then i went outside to ask for help but no one heard me. >> reporter: the town of amariche, one of the hardest hilt and the buildings now disintegrated and chunks of rock and concrete scattered everywhere. >> there is nothing left standing. i'm so sorry for so many people

that they are under the rubble. they are people i love. >> reporter: the earthquake violently erupting in the middle of the night and more than 150 aftershocks and tremors felt along the length of the country. pope francis now asking for the world's prayers. this clock tower the only iconic structure left standing in the town. and these before and after shots show just how much this town changed in a matter of seconds. and the state department this afternoon urging americans in the quake zone to call the embassy and to contact family members and in any way possible, including using social media outlets. dan and ama, back to you. >> it is a great resource. do we happen to know why this region of italy has seen so much seismic activity. >> reporter: yeah, this region is very active. in fact, it is compared to the san andreas fault of europe because it sits between two tet

onic plate, theash plate and the africa plate that are constantly crashing into one another and the earthquake in 2009 which killed 300 people, that region experienced earthquakes back in 1997 and in 1908. that quake in 1908 killed 70,000 people. back to you. >> ray, thank you. well facebook is playing a big role in the aftermath of the earthquake. this is using the facebook live feature. facebook has activated the safety check feature which lets people mark themselves as safe on their page. if you want to find it, type safety check in the search bar. there was also a devastating earthquake in asia, in the country of miramar. there were fatalities and many historic temples were damaged. kristen zse is here with video and pictures out of the quake zone. >> reporter: well right now three fatalities have been confirmed and more than a

hundred ancient buddhist temples have been damage order destroyed. the 6.8 magnitude hit in miramar near a popular tourist area. in fact, tours were live on perry scope. >> oh, my god, look at that. remember there used to be a top on top of that temple there. there was a top on top of the temple and it all fell forward right where i was standing right there. >> and now here is dave's video of the same temple shot the day before the quake. i'm going go pause it. we're going to bring that back up again. it is -- it is right here. that's gone. so we're going to show you also -- sorry about that. let's get back to showing you some of the other features. there is also volleyball tournament taking place as the same time in myanmar and take a look at what happened there. go ahead and roll the sound.

they declared it under control less than an hour later. five people lived inside but they can't stay in the 100-year-old building for the time being for obvious reasons. a woman is being treated for smoke inhalation after her house caught fire this morning. fire crews responded to the home just before 7:00. the fire department tweeted these photos you see here. crews put out the fire in about 20 minutes. they believe it was started by a candle left unattended in a bedroom. containment is up slightly on a stubborn wildfire near hurst castle. the chimney fire is up from 35% contained. it has now burned more than 73 square miles and destroyed 45 homes in san luis obispo and monterey county and 2500 people have been evacuated and the castle remains closed. and we are looking at a very familiar weather pattern right here on live doppler 7 hd and we

see a persistent mean layer which has kept the sky from looking dreary but sunny skies inland areas. and the winds are rather strong. we have gusts to 30 miles per hour at sfo. 23 miles per hour at novato. 20 at fairfield. and the strong breezes have given us a relatively filter as you could see in the blue sky over the bay from the rooftop camera. it is 61 degrees here in san francisco and mountain view 72, morgan hill 88 and at in half moon bay. here is a view from the mt. tam camera above the marine lair and you could see sutro tower poking out there. 74 in santa rosa. 85 at fairfield concord and livermore and here is a look at our fog and temperature animation. overnight we'll see the low clouds and fog pushing inland and low temperatures in the 50s so we're kind of -- so what kind of day tomorrow? i'll have the forecast coming up in a few minutes. and now to your voice and

your vote. right now hillary clinton is about to begin the second of three bay area fundraisers, all of course to build up her coffers in the race for the white house. >> david louie has been following this story and he is live in los altos today. >> reporter: we're told that people are spending as much as $100,000 to attend one of these events today. event number two is just about ready to get started down that lane here in los altos. as soon as hillary clinton finished here she's off to a third event in woodside. and when you pay that kind of money, are contributors expecting anything back. there was plenty of excitement as many waited in a long line outside of the hotel. >> may i ask what you had to pay to attend today. >> a thousand dollars. >> that is on the low side. >> it is a last minute -- and so i believe my category is fight on so fight on i guess. >> reporter: and contributors have no expectations of getting time with secretary clinton but

james johnson is different. he is helping to raise money from friends for the campaign. last sunday he was invited to a private function with kim cain where johnson was able to impress upon him the importance of immigration reform. >> i think that is something that i'm very passionate about and being able to be part of these events, sometimes it gives me a special access to the people that are running the campaign. >> johnson took this selfie at today's fundraiser in wedroad city. the question is one that could come up in the campaign. questions have been raised if contributors have access when she was secretary of state. lisa jackson co-hosting a fundraiser this afternoon with apple ceo tim cook is also a board member of the clinton foundation. >> i think we would like to think that it doesn't give anyone special access but people who have that come from a certain sort of status and with that they either know information or have access to networks or connections that can help candidates in certain ways.

>> reporter: in losality os, david louie, abc 7 news. >> and abc 7 news was in san francisco johnson state building as applicants made a petition to get a judge fired. the group dropped off a letter signed by sexual assault survivors to the california commission on judicial performance and they want judge perske removed from the bench. he was criticized for giving brock turner what they say is a light sentence after he was convicted on three sexual assault charges. and we were over a drug raid nearal madden quick sirl park. the video shows officers taking away several plants from the back of this house. lafayette police are searching for this man. they say he held up the u.s. bank branch on mt. diablo boulevard around 4:45 this afternoon. they closed the b.a.r.t. station while they searched for the suspect with help from a

helicopter and canine. he is 5'6" with a medium build and dark hair and dark colored goatee with gray in it. police are not saying how much money he got away with. and rubble is still at the crash in which a taxi plowed into two people on a san francisco sidewalk. this was the scene. according to the san francisco chronicle, cab driver has apologized to the victims who worked at a shoe shine stand. one is in critical and the other in fair condition and they are investigating whether the driver may have had a medical emergency or if the cab had a mechanical problem. coming up on abc 7 news at 4:00, as deadly earthquakes rattle italy and myanmar, people here look back on two years after the napa quake. just sitting there and shrink wrapped and untouched and it is a mystery. >> a look at then and now and what still needs to be done. also ahead, the vacation that turned into a nightmare after a couple arrived back home

downtown napa is busy and beautiful and you never would know there is a earthquake until you look next door at the damaged windowless building and across the street at courthouse still closed. >> our historic courthouse that we are proud of is sitting there shrink wrapped and untouched. so that is a mystery. >> reporter: this street in front of the cafe just opened last month. >> i'm happy. now if we could put together the street i'll be happier. >> reporter: they've distributed millions of donation to 1400 earthquake victims and you could see exampled downtown. new buildings stand where there was once rubble two years ago. >> pretty exciting. we have a lot going on in napa. >> reporter: but not everyone is getting help. rick said he couldn't get relief money because his building was okay and his cafe stayed open but he has lost customers

because of damage around him. >> i sold my house and i got have friends and family that are here so life goes on. >> reporter: and that is the re-election rereflection on this anniversary as they hear tragedy news of the italy earthquake. >> this just seems eerily connected, the wine country town not unlike ours, same day, 3:30 in the morning and it is eerily connected. >> reporter: at this time last year napa had 131 buildings red tagged and now there are 50. so they are plugging along and they say it is probably going to be at least a year until the courthouse and the library are repaired. in napa, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. now coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00, we'll take a closer look at the recovery from the napa quake, including the church which suffered heavy damage and what it looks like today. and one more note, you will find guidelines for stocking on

earthquake survival kit and developing an emergency plan for your website on abc7news.com under prepare nor cal. check that out when you can. a homeowner is facing a huge repair bill after a family of squatters took over his property. it happened at this house in olive hurst, 38 miles north of sacramento. neighbors say a family of five with five dogs recently moved into the house. the owner was out of town. >> i thought it was really awkward. there was no u-haul truck, no furniture, they just moved in there. it is nerve-wracking thinking that who is living there. >> authorities eventually came in and here is what they found. rooms spray painted and trash everywhere and broken doors and windows. deputies took two people into custody also accused of using the home for an identity theft ring to make counterfeit checks. well caltrans is about to spend a lot of money to make berkeley sidewalks more accessible to people with disabilities. the agency said it will invest more than $1.6 million in

projects in berkeley. the biggest job will be to widen sidewalks and regrade curb ramps on ash by between shaddock and 7th street and the work is expected to begin this fall. you tube is changing the smart tv application. the changes will make it easier to use on a big screen where people often because for content instead of searching for something specific. the categories have moved out of the side menu and to the top of the screen. there are also new sections for content and live streams and the update is on tv platforms except apple tv. uber will soon offer drivers in some cities retirement advice. they are partnering with betterment. it will offer a year of free retirement advice to drivers in seattle, boston and chicago and new jersey. drivers in the bay area aren't being offered that benefit. >> we could all use that kind of advice.

let's turn our attention to the weather forecast. gorgeous out there today. >> sportsneter is here with the late -- spencer is here with the latest. >> upper 80s near the coast and let's look at doppler live 7 hd and the fog is closing in on the coastline and pushing out of the bay right now. so let's look at current temperature readings. breezy and cool near the coast. and bay. 61 in san francisco. low 70 as cross the bay and across inland areas are mild to warm mainly mid-80s. here is a few of the golden gate where it is partly cloudy and news of our forecast features, foggy conditions overnight and spotty early morning drizzle is likely and mild inland and near the bay as well. and we'll have a cooler pattern in most areas by the end of the week. this is how things will look overnight. we'll see widespread areas of low clouds and fog and perhaps not so dense as we saw last night. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid-50s, a few low 50s up in the north bay valleys. our forecast animation and you could see the fog surging across

the bay overnight and once again not so widespread nor so dense as we saw this morning so tomorrow morning at 7:00, it is mainly clear down in parts of the south bay and on to the peninsula but we'll see areas of fog locally across the east bay from hayward up to oakland into parts of the north bay as well. could slow down the morning commute in those areas just a little bit. and then we'll see the fog pulling back to the coastline by mid morning to midday giving us sunny skies inland and out over the bay. let's take a look at high temperature range tomorrow. low 60s at the coast. upper 60s to mid-70s around the bay and mid to upper 80s in the warmest inland locations, mainly inland east bay and our maximum temperature range, starting on friday, below average temperatures, especially inland and near the bay. that is on friday. pretty much the same pattern, quiet pattern and steady on saturday and then into sunday, still cool for august but we'll have warm-up coming our way early next week and you could see that here on the accuweather seven-day forecast. as soon as i get out of the way. and there it is. below average temperatures, still mild through the weekend.

a mural of latino civil rights leader cesar chavez has been vandalized. it was painted this month on the side of a building in san francisco hayes valley. two different taggers painted on the bottom of the mural but didn't affect the farm worker's union. ferry became famous for his obama hope postner 2008. and new details in the olympic swimmers deacle in rio, and james feigen said he is sorry for the serious distraction they caused at the gas station during the olympics and added that he left out facts like urinating behind the building when he talked with police. he min tained a gun was paid at them and paid the nearly $11,000 fine. ryan lochte said the group was robbed. well twitter is buzzing about nba star james hardin's

earthquake. it struck overnight 100 miles northeast of rome. 159 people have died and hundreds more are missing. as rescuers try to search for them. you are looking at video from a town at the epicenter of the earthquake. now in the southeast asian country of myanmar there were four deaths from a 6.8 magnitude earthquake and pag odas are damaged as a result. and here at home, today marks two years to the day since the napa earthquake. wayne freedman has spent the day in napa talking with residents and business owners still recovering. look for his report on abc 7 news at 5:00. now the two major earthquakes today and the napa anniversary offer an important reminder for all of us of the need to retro fifit buildings. property owners only have three weeks to meet a city mandate. carolyn tyler is live with that

story. >> reporter: dan, there are 562 buildings like this all around the city. and only about half, including this property, are having the work done that the city is requiring. time is running out for some san francisco property owners to do this seismic retrofitting. so-called soft story buildings, multi-story wood frame structures with garages or other openingsond ground floor are vulnerable during earthquakes. senior centers were the first to start safety improvement. and now owners with buildings of 15 or more units must apply for a permit to set row fit by september 15th. >> the longer you wait and you have to fire an engineer to file the permits and the contractor to do the work. >> reporter: tom is director of the department of building inspections which will slap a placard like this on properties

that are in violation after the deadline. the san francisco garage company has about two dozen soft story projects it is working on. >> there is activity and people calling trying to get things do done. >> reporter: the city mindful of the earthquake in 1989 passed a law mandating the work in 2013. in all just over 5,000 buildings were put on the list and others face a deadline next year. the retrofit can be expensive, $100,000 or more. the city is allowing owners to add units to their properties as an in sentive. and the cost could be passedo o in phases to tenants. the director believes it is well worth the price. >> i know, but this is earthquakes and we want to protect lives and also their property. >> reporter: and there will be hearings, there will be warnings and then fines for the property

owners that do not comply. again, september 15th, the deadline to go down to the department of building inspection and at least apply for a permit. live in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. >> carolyn, you are talking about what is happening in san francisco. something similar happening in other bay area cities? >> reporter: well, there is no state law that mandates this. but oakland and berkeley are among the cities that do have their own retrofit programs. >> thanks, carolyn, very much. two people are dead after an attack on american university of afghanistan. the school is on the out skirts of the capital of kabul. witnesses heard an explosion and shooting as they exchanged gunfire with attackers, at least five people were hurt. police are looking for the attackers. this comes two weeks after two professors were kidnapped at gunpoint. the school has partnerships with many u.s. colleges, including stanford and the uc system.

roofs ripped off apartments and buses on their sides, developing now in central indiana, people are picking up the pieces after at least two tornados left behind a path of destruction. the national weather service issued a tornado warning after a large and destructive twister struck about 40 miles north of indianapolis. you could see parts of a home tossed around in the trees there. so far there are no reports of any major injuries. hillary clinton continues with questions about giving clinton foundation donors special access and donald trump is softening his stance on undocumented immigration after clinton is opening a big lead in one state and losing a lead to trump in another. here is maggie ruly. >> reporter: rallying supporters in florida, donald trump repeated his passionate flee to t -- plea to the voters --

>> to the african-american -- great voters and to the hispanic voters, i say, what do you have to lose. >> and on fox news he clarified his evolving opinion on illegal immigration. >> there could certainly be a softening because we are not looking to hurt people. >> reporter: the nominee made no mention of his deportation force to remove 11 million undocumented workers, a talking point during the primary. it is seemed as a move to attract those in the senate that do not support mass deportation but as rick klein notes, it is a risky gamble. >> trump movement on one of the hardest line areas that he annunciated is being viewed with intense skepticism and is this the donald trump we voted for in the primary. >> and as trump struggles to find a balance, the clinton campaign is hounded by questions about the state department's cozy relationship with the clinton foundation while hillary clinton was secretary of state. >> this is a lot more smoke than fire but the smoke keeps growing and it is impossible to ignore

right now for the clinton campaign. >> reporter: despite the e-mail controversy, clinton is up in the polls. but trump said not so fast. he said he was mr. brexit, well a pro-brexit rally tonight and suggesting a come-from-behind victory. officials are investigating cyber attacks against the new york times in moscow. they said none of the internal systems were compromise: they suspect it is a continuing attack by russia. officials tell abc news these are the same hackers who leaked more than 19,000 e-mails from the democratic national committee servers. local activists plan to rally in san francisco tonight to show their solidarity with people protesting against a pipeline in north dakota. supporters of the standing rock sioux tribe marched through bismarck and they want a judge to stop construction on the pipeline linking north dakota

and illinois. the judge said he will rule next month. tonight's rally in san francisco starts at 5:30, outside of the federal building on 7th street. a bill that mandates safer storage of guns is on the verge of becoming state law. the bill would require all sworn officers to keep their guns locked up when left in unattended vehicles. follows a series of incidents where guns were stolen after left in cars by law enforcement officers. two bay area people were subsequently killed with stolen weapons. the bill now goes to the governor for his signature. still to come on abc 7 news at 4:00, a plot swift twist -- twist in a murder case that fascinated the entire nation. >> i had no reason to kill her. >> the new witnesses now coming forward years after a man accused of murder was convicted. i'm spencer from the east bay hills camera, clear skies over the bay and a little reflection of sunshine light off the bay waters but the advancing

two new witnesses are coming forward raising questions about his alibi. >> we have more. >> reporter: attempted to discredit a star alibi in the case of adnan syed after the killing of his high school ex-girlfriend, lee, a crime he insists he didn't commit. a baltimore judge ordering a new trial after more evidence. >> the conviction is erased. >> reporter: mcclain testified at the hearing requesting a new trial saying when lee was being killed he was with her in the library. >> i was sit in the library bored to tears and someone walked in that i knew. >> reporter: but according to documents filed by prosecutors this week, the claims is being called a flat-out lie. two of her former classmates say in a conversation back in high school, mcclain told them she believed so much in his innocence she would make up a lie to prove he couldn't have done it. >> their statement is so rich in

this was a big crackdown on organized crime san jose. it prompted raids stretching from the bay area to the deep south. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen is live at the police department with details. chris? >> reporter: kristen, the police chief called it a punch to the gut when he learned about the officers involvement with the gang. tonight that officer is on paid administrative leave and police are still looking for six additional suspects. dubbed by san jose police as operation gang of throwns, a five-month long investigation has culminated in the arrest of 23 people knowns as members or associates of a street gang. but perhaps one of the more stunning details, the arrest of a 9 and a half year veteran of the police department, officer derek antonio is providing confidential law enforcement information to the gang and he's been charged with felonies. >> his acts were deplorable and do not represent the character

of the remaining members of the department who under extraordinary circumstances protect and serve the city with great honor. >> reporter: we spoke to the san jose mayor following the officer's arrest. >> as soon as it was discovered, a first indication that there was a police officer who was involved in this crime, we did everything we could to ensure he was immediately taken off the force. >> reporter: police in cooperation with the santa clara district attorney and drug enforcement and the fbi carried out the investigation. resulting in a toll of 34 search warrants being served yesterday in santa clara county, southern california and the state of louisiana. among the items that were seized, handguns, vehicles, illegal gambling machines and more than $200,000 in u.s. currency. investigators also recovered more than 4,000 extacy pills and 600 pounds of marijuana, xanax and molly and steroids and also taken into evidence was an alligator.
