>> live where you live this is abc7 news. >> now at 11:00, a woman punched over and over again in the face for no reason another all. tonight san francisco police are searching for the man who viciously attacked a stranger in broad daylight. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. the attack happened over the weekend in the city's normally quiet pacific heights neighborhood. >> dan: that's where cornell bernard is live. cornell? >> reporter: dan and ama, the victim is recovering from her injuries after being attacked by a man in his 40s right here on washington street. that man is still on the loose. we do want to warn you video of the attack is disturbing. a brutal unprovoked attack caught on a security camera. a woman in her 50s walking down washington street is approached by a stranger who suddenly starts punching her in the face over and over.

she tries to shield herself from the blows, but the man continues the assault. >> she merely on a walk in the area. he just started to attack her. >> reporter: it lasted 45 seconds and then the man walks across the street. >> holy moly. >> reporter: we showed the attack to this pacific heights neighbor. >> i am frightened because i walk along here twice a day. >> that is unmanly. that is inhumane. that's awful. >> you just never know. >> reporter: the victim told police she had never seen the man before. she described him as a white man with brown hair and dark green hoodie and jeans. police believe he may be homeless. >> maybe he was having some type of mental health issue and he was under the influence of a narcotic. >> i don't even know if he was homeless or not.

he could have been a normal man walking down the street and got angry. >> reporter: the victim's nose was broken in several places. she will recover. police hope someone will recognize her attacker and share the information. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> dan: new at 11:00, a police officer ran into this burning home and saved a blind man from the flames. contra costa fire tweeted this video from the scene on 11th street. the officer is in surgery after falling glass cut his arm. the man he saved is being treated for smoke inhalation. tonight police are looking for six additional suspects after the "game of thrones" drug bust we were telling you about. the sweep resulted in two dozen arrests including a member from the police department itself. officer derrick antonio is on administrative leave. he is accused of providing confidential law enforcement information to members of a san jose criminal street gang. >> his acts were deplorable and in no way represent the character of the remaining

members of the department who under extraordinary circumstances protect and serve the city with great honor. >> dan: the gang is believed to be involved in a number of crimes including assault, extortion, narcotics, trafficking and more. among items seized are handguns and $200,000 cash and one alligator. >> ama: jeffrey kristina is on the council and he is accused of battery and false imprisonment. lil -- lilian kim is live. lilian? >> reporter: ama, jeffrey christina was elected six years ago and he even served as mayor at one point. now he faces three misdemeanor charges. campbell city councilman jeffrey christina has been arrested on suspicion of battery and false imprisonment and preventing a significant other from calling 9-1-1. it started at the couple's

home. officers say christina grabbed his fiancee's arm and kept her from calling for help and leaving the home. >> it is a few hours old. i plan on waiting to get all of the facts. >> reporter: police say christina and his fiancee were together for years and have two small children. they started investigating when she showed up in the back gate and claimed to have been involved in a domestic violence incident. >> city councilman campbell. i don't think it is a very progressive way to be. >> may need counseling and we really want the best representation we can get.

in campbell, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> dan: sad news out of italy. the death toll has rezzen to 257 people after the deadly 6.2 magnitude earthquake earlier this morning. the quake struck 100 miles northeast of rome. at least 159 people have died and dozens more are missing. you are looking at video from the town at the epicenter of the earthquake. abc news reporter terry moran is live with more on the rescue efforts happening right now. result -- >> reporter: rescue efforts are happening right now. it is one of the hardest hit villages in the mountainous area of italy that was the epicenter of destruction. the death toll at 159 expected to rise. the old hotel was a little ways from here and flattened like this building.

they believe 70 people were in the building. that's one of the problems. they don't know how many were in the village. this is a population of 2500 people. a big festival this weekend draws on average about 10,000 people. there is still much work to be done. all day we saw rescuers crawling all over the rubble. local residents helping and digging out people and they did. there were many people who were safe today. the toll is rising and the expectation is that it will continue to do so. terry moran, abc news, italy. >> dan: here at home, it marked two years to the day since the devastating magnitude 6 earthquake in napa. they distributed more than $8 million in donations to nearly 1400 earthquake victims in these past two years. while there are still hundreds of yellow tagged homes and they had 131 red tagged

we are expecting smoke from the fire to move in. live doppler 7hd is showing where the fog is well into the north bay. visibility down to five miles in petaluma because of the fog. be careful during the morning commute. here is a look from our exploratorium camera. the top of the pyramid is barely visible. mid50s around san francisco and half moon bay. mountain view and san jose is mild in the low 60s. a live look from the south beach camera and you will see areas of poor visibility. santa rosa and napa, and mid50s and 62 in concord and 59 in livermore. one other live picture and you can barely make out what this is. it is a fuzzy view because of the fog. foggy and drizzly areas. the cooler days are on tap for not just friday, but through the weekend. the temperatures begin in the low to upper 50s.

the slick spots could slow you down and you can see that right there in green on the san mateo coastline. 7:00 a.m., you will still be dealing with the fog. oakland and hayward and santa rosa as far as the stinson beach area goes. those are the pockets of visibility you will be dealing with. you will see the sun by 11:00 a.m. along the coast the fog will keep you company. here are your highs for your thursday. like today we are expecting a few low 90s. 86 in livermore. 71 in san mateo. mid70s around san rafael and 64 san francisco and 61 in half moon bay. here is where the wind is going to switch directions. on friday we will see more of a south wind and it will transport more smoke into our south bay and east bay. if you have respiratory issues
