let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> good morning and thanks so much for joining us. let's start with a first look at the forecast. >> hi, chris, good morning, everyone. we've got the gray skies and overcast conditions around many parts of the bay area and you can see that with live doppler 7. they will clear back later on, but i want to show you a live shot of sfo with those low clouds. they are now reporting 53 minute arrival delays for some flights so we've got the clouds in the morning with temperatures in the 60s. mostly sunny by lunch time. heading out comfortable inland. already in the low 70s. 68 around the bay and it stays in the low 60s throughout the day. breezy this afternoon around the bay. 10 to 20-mile-per-hour winds and notice the highs only in the low 80s inland. low 70s around the bay.

we have some cooler weather in store for us and below average temperatures and i'll have that coming up. chris. >> thank you. we have breaking news out of the south bay this morning. a man is dead after a stabbing in san jose. police say they received a report of a disturbance just after midnight. the man had at least one stab wound. san jose are looking for suspects and investigating the motive for the stabbing. this is the city's 35th homicide of the year. we're also following breaking news where police are investigating a shooting that left one person injured in downtown walnut creek. it happened around 1:30 this morning at the corner of locust and cypress. you can see heavy police presence in the area. no word on the condition of the person that was shot. back in 2013 walnut creek police stopped issuing liquor licenses due to increased violence in the

downtown nightclub area. and police have a sketch of a man wanted for beating a woman caught on video. he repeatedly punched the woman in the face for no reason. it happened last saturday night in pacific heights. the woman broman -- man broke t woman's nose. notice he has a mole on his upper right cheek. he has dirty blond hair. in you've seen him, please call police. new this morning, 49ers quarterback collin kaepernick continues to make headlines. the team acknowledges he did not stand for the national anthem before last night's game. you can see kaepernick sitting down while the rest of the team is standing. now, in a statement the team said the national anthem is an opportunity to honor our

country, but they recognize the rights of an individual who choose to participate or not in the celebration of the national anthem. now, kaepernick just released a lengthy statement about his actions. it said in part, quote, i am not going to stand up to show pride in a country that oppresses black people and people of color. we posted the full website -- or the post of the full statement rather on our website. in santa clara county, a six week old has died from the abuse during her brief life. her father is being held on $1 million bail at the jail. there is one piece of good news in this tragic story. her organs were donated. >> we've really -- we're all shocked. >> reporter: matthew thompson lives directly below the apartment where a six week old

baby girl was repeatedly beaten by her own father. doctors found she suffered a cracked skull and multiple broken bones and fractures. >> i never heard anything suspicious. i heard -- i heard the baby crying once in a while. i could hear moving around. i never heard any violence. >> i think it's so sad that a little six week old baby girl, all she knew was this brutality. >> reporter: neighbors say 32-year-old lived with his girlfriend. his two older children often stayed there as well. abc 7 learned that he has a record of child abuse. >> how could our system be such that somebody who has previous child abuse conviction gets custody of his children? >> reporter: he was arraigned and charged with murder. he admitted to detectives to ripping her from a car seat and said her head hit the handle. >> this is the worst -- worst scenario that can happen in a domestic abuse case.

>> reporter: the sheriff's office set up a go fund me site to cover the funeral costs. >> and there are resources available if you're a parent and need help with child care. just go to our website abc 7 news.com and click on this story for more information. chicago police are questioning two people in the shooting death of a cousin of nba star dwyane wade. she was hit by cross fire from two men slit schooting at a third man yesterday. aldridge was on her way to register her kids for school. the baby wasn't hurt, but the tragedy came one day after wade's mother sat on a panel about gun violence. wade expressed his grief on twitter saying another act of senseless gun violence. four kids lost their mom for no reason. unreal. #enough is enough. >> 8:05 is our time. the young woman at the center of the oakland police scandal is going to rehab in florida. this is a story that abc 7 news

iteam has been following closely. a sergeant drove her to the airport yesterday. she told the item she had sex with law enforcement officers several while she was underage. she said she's both excited and nervous about the month that she'll be spending in rehab. happening today, thousands of residents plan to protest to fight against an expansion of the land fill. the land fill in neighboring san jose has been around since the 1930s. many people say a stench that comes from the landfill makes its way to their city and they 'had enough. so today they'll be running a peaceful rally during the family bike ride. it starts at 9:00 this morning on ranch drive. governor brown has taken a strong stance against coal.

he signed a bill yesterday to ban funds for nicole shipping terminals throughout the state. he applauded the oakland city council which voted to ban coal terminals. many were saying it would bring much needed jobs but now that governor brown signed the bill money will not be provided for new coal terminals. happening today in nap pa, a branch of the air force is hosting a training exercise. this comes after the two-year anniversary of the 6.0 napa quake. they'll conduct the training exercise which will show a 7.2 earthquake. they'll use the emergency services to assess the area. this morning friends and loved ones said good-bye to those who died after the 6.2 earthquake shook italy. the death toll is up to 281 with

nearly 400 injured and some thousand more looking for shelter. 5,000 rescuers are still working in hopes of recovering survivors. a federal judge is refusing to block california's strict new vaccination laws. he has denied a request for a preliminary injunction gengsaga it. 17 families are suing to block the law. it requires all school kids to get vaccinated before attending class and takes away religious and personal exempt reasons to opt out. unvaccinated kids who can't get a medical exemption will have to be home schooled. students will begin moving into a historic residence hall that underwent a renovation. the building opened in 1929 and is thought to be the nation's first residential hall. professors and graduate students will live there as well and they'll participate in weekly

daved by the badge. a highway patrol trooper is lucky to be alive after being shot. it happened thursday when a suspect got out of a stopped car and started running. the officer went after him and a gun fight broke out. the man was shot and killed. the highway patrol shared this picture of the badge saying it saved the officer's life. only on abc 7 news we have video of a fight in the middle of san francisco's financial district. it happened on tuesday and as abc 7 news reporter explains,

this all started when a man took out his cell phone just to take some pictures. >> when a cab driver jumped the curb, peter muller went to see what happened. >> i was curious and i wanted to check it out. >> reporter: he was one of dozens of people taking pictures and video when he says a woman began yelling at him. >> she was saying i should be more concerned of the feelings of the victims. >> reporter: one of the victims, this shoe shine man who has a broken hip. >> as police responded to the crash another incident was just beginning. he nesinitially walked away fro the woman and two others and then returned. you can see a heated verbal argument. the man initially pulls the woman back until muller said one last sentence to get away. >> to get his [ bleep ] girlfriend out of my face. i'm still in shock about it. >> reporter: one of the women continued to kick muller even as

he pinned the man to the ground. when police arrived the person taking this video went downstairs. >> i hear someone say i have a video and i was like thank you. >> reporter: san francisco police say they were cited for misdemeanor, battery and released. puller has scrapes on his arm. he's already had his glasses fixed. >> someone who took a video ended up really helping me but the whole root of the problem stemmed from someone taking a photo of what happened. >> reporter: abc 7 news. a sheriff's deputy threatening to have his wife killed is out of a job this morning. deputy travis bran nonno longer works for the department. the bay area news group reports that he was arrested for domestic violence and charged with violating a restraining order that his wife filed against him. he's also been on leave for his association with a woman who

admitted to having sex with police officers while she was underage. time now approaching 8:15 on our saturday morning. abc 7 is proud to partner with the taylor family foundation. for more than 25 year it is foundation has provided free summer camps for children with life threatening illnesses or life altering conditions. abc 7's cheryl jennings recently visited a camp session in liver more. >> reporter: the smiles, the sheer joy of being a kid shows in the enthusiasm of these young people as they celebrate their version of the summer olympic games. this is camp go beyond. they're holding their annual session sponsored by the taylor family foundation. you'd never know the campers and counselors live with potentially life threatening intestinal illnesses including irritable bowel disease or colitis or

crohn's disease. >> i got diagnosed when i was eight i have crohn's disease and it's a form of ibd. it's a lot of inflammation in your stomach. >> reporter: they're both dealing with health issues. >> how do you manage your illness? >> pills. >> we don't know what causes it. we do know that there are genes associated with inflammatory bowel disease. >> reporter: camp go beyond was founded 16 years ago. he's the division chief of pediatric gastroenterology in the children's hospital in san francisco. >> two nurse practitioners been with me the whole time and between all of us we have run the camp and probably about half the kids here are our patients. >> reporter: he says some manage their illnesses on medications and control their diet but others have to endure surgery. >> it starts right here.

it goes through a vein into my heart and nutrition and protein and all the stuff you need goes through it. >> a little over a year ago i had to have my colon removed after going through about six or seven different medications within six months so now i have what is called a j pouch which is formed out of my small intesti intestine. >> reporter: her surgery means she temporarily lives with something called a stoma on the outside of her abdomen. >> when i eat instead of going out one end they go out at end to give the colon a rest from having to push food through. >> reporter: campers love they are not treated like sick kids here. >> we try and put them through every activity we possibly can and they quickly go to the med shed, take their medications, get patched up if necessary and get back out to the business of being campers. >> reporter: it's so great to see these kids having fun at least for a week because sometimes when they're home

people make fun of them because of their disease. >> we just have to rush to rest room lots of times and a few times a few people started making fun of me because i would just always rush otothe bathroom during class. >> reporter: the director of the taylor family foundation says they make extra accommodations for these campers. >> we also cover 140 acres so we put port a potties in throughout all campus so that no child risks having an accident. >> reporter: the experiences at camp go beyond are often life changing. >> they'll be like i want to be a counselor, to be able to be that person in that kid's life that's oh, my gosh, look at her and she went ahead to college and she did this and that. if she can do it, i can do it. >> the taylor family foundation fund raiser is tomorrow in liver more. we hope you can join us. for more information visit our website.

if you like it cool, i think you're going to like this forecast. we've got overcast conditions over the bay area from santa rosa all the way down to san jose. but we will see sunshine later on this afternoon. you see those gray conditions. temperatures are mainly in the low 60s. san francisco 60, oakland 63. san jose 62. morgan hill still in the upper 50s and as we look to future we see the gray skies over san francisco as well. napa 62. nevada 63. fairfield, concord and liver moer lower 60s as well. we'll take you down to santa cruz where you can see we've got the low clouds and that's going to stick around throughout the day. mostly at the coast, but we're starting off widespread this morning. a mild pattern this weekend and then below average temperatures all through next week and i'll

show you that with the 7-day forecast. so even 9:00 this morning in the next hour we'll still see cloudy conditions along santa rosa. cloudy as well into parts of the east bay. partial clearing in the south bay and san jose as you head down to morgan hill as well. by lunchtime it pulls back and then by this afternoon, even some breaks in the clouds at the coast. but that's where things are going to stay. cool temperatures there will cover near 60 degrees. san francisco 65. that's below our normal of 69 and we usually see warmer weather, but we've just been below average this month. san jose 77 and the warmest inland locations will possibly hit the mid-80s. but really comfortable in santa rosa at 75. 73. if you're haeeaded to the giant game tonight you might need a light jacket. so mild again overnight with the

extensive cloud cover. here's a look at the week ahead in san jose. the average high there is 83. we're at 77 today and notice we are below average all week. in fact, we'll be cooling down even more midweek into thursday. and so the marine layer deepens midweek and so we'll be well below average thursday and friday, actually wednesday and thursday inland areas in the upper 70s to near 80s. along the coast it stays at the 60s so we are in a mild pattern. slight warming tomorrow. but overall if you like this milder weather it's going to stick around for a while so enjoy it. we will get some sunshine as well. >> i am leavioving your forecas. and the need for speed. what it's adding to its

good morning. let's get up and get going. >> it's great to have you with us. we're starting this half hour with a quick look at the weather. hi, francis. >> hi, chris. gray clouds over many parts of the bay area. you can see it from the coast all the way around the bay even into inland locations and here's a live view. there are 53 minute flight arrival delays due to low clouds. temperatures mainly in the 60s. low 60s for everyone in the next hour or so so just hanging on to the upper 50s at the coast. mostly sunny by lunch time and

temperatures will be climbing. breezy conditions around the bay. inland areas a little bit cooler than normal. only the low 80s around the bay. low 70s and at the coast still in the 60s. sunset is 7:45. should be a nice evening for those of you who have plans out and i'll show you your cooler than normal 7-day coming up. activists are keeping pressure on the san francisco d.a.'s office to prosecute the police officers involved in the shooting death of a 20-year-old immigrant. he was shot at least six times by two plain clothed officers a year and a half ago. activists took to the street to remember lopez and to demand answers from police. >> reporter: a sidewalk mural marks where the 20-year-old was killed. these demonstrators say they'll keep pressure on authorities to seek justice for lopez. >> weave been waiting a year and a half for the d.a.'s decision insisting he charge the officers

who killed lopez with murder. >> reporter: he was shot by two plain clothesed police officers after they say he lunged at the officers when they told them to drop his weapon. the autopsy seem to contradict that. >> six shots in the back is unheard of. is supreme court said many, many, many years ago you don't do that to a fleeing anybody. >> reporter: during this demonstration protesters held a banner with 64 names, people who have been shot by san francisco police since 2000. and none of the officers involved have ever faced charges. public defender questions why d.a.s are so adverse to bringing cases against the police. >> we have a person that was shot six times in the back. there's no question these bullets came from guns held by police officers. why isn't there even a charge of negligent discharge? >> reporter: organizers are now calling to appoint a special prosecutor in this case.

new this morning san jose police are asking for your help to find a man who they say robbed two banks this month. this is a picture of the man. police say the first robbery happened last friday at around 3:15 at the chase bank on blossom hill road. the second robbery happened thursday afternoon just before 2:00 at the wells fargo bank. police say he gave the bank tellers a note demanding money and that he had a gun. it's unclear how much money he got away with. in san francisco police also need assistance identifying three people involved in a robbery. they say two men and a woman stole a laptop from the hall last month. two of them then entered a different building and punched two students in the face and robbed them. surveillance video shows the suspects walking through a university building. one of the victims suffered a broken nose. a man is accused of having more than 600 files containing child pornography on his phone and tablet.

he's charged with possessing and distributing child pornography. investigators found hundreds of pictures and video in his home showing children as young as four years old. police also found meth. if you live in sonoma county, officials want you to be aware of a money scam going around. the sheriff's office says a person claiming to be a lieutenant vance berry calls and says there's a warrant for arrest because of missed jury duty. the scammer says they must pay to avoid arrest and asks for a social number and credit card. law enforcement agencies do not call people to tell them there's a warrant out for their arrest. there's a move to put the brakes on big rigs traveling on highways in the bay area and across the country. the proposal would forcefully limit how fast trucks can travel to use an electronic device to cap speed. not everyone likes the idea. >> reporter: if you're a truck driver in the bay area, you know

the cliche', time is money is all too real. just ask this driver. >> where are you? i'm on the freeway. >> reporter: he's been driving for decades and still feels the pressure to deliver the goods on time but plays it safe. >> i take my time to deliver the ro load. >> reporter: others are trying to beat the clock. motorists see it. >> i see them in the fast lane that they shouldn't be in. >> reporter: they drive as fast as the cars go. a proposal from the traffic administration would impose a nationwide limit by using an electronic device to cap speeds in new trucks and buses between 60 and 68 miles per hour. older trucks would not be impacted. the hope, to reduce big rig collisions, some deadly. >> safety wise, it's a good thing. >> reporter: he works for mutual express in oakland, a trucking company proud of its safety record. he says regulating a truck's

speed could save money and fuel but could drive up the cost of business. >> when you're forced to slow down on top of delays, it's hard. >> reporter: many large companies already cap speeds on their trucks. soon all new trucks on the road could be forced to drive the limit. abc 7 news. workers earning the minimum wage in berkeley can look forward to getting a raise. a special meeting yesterday the city council voted to raise the wage to $15 an hour. the current minimum wage in berkeley is $11 an hour. it will go to 12.53 on october first and rise next october. it will hit $15 by the year 2018. council members say they'll ask to reject two competing minimum wage items on the november ballot. target is hosting a one day sale to try to win back some of its customers.

earlier this year target began allowing customers to use the rest room or fitting room matching their gender identity. single rest rooms are now being installed in all stores. the time is 8:36. the fda wants california to be against blood donations for the zika virus as soon as possible. sex with an infected partner may help spread zika even in areas where there are no mosquitos carry the virus. california is one of 11 states that must begin screenings in four weeks. that's because many people here travel to zika infected countries. turning to the race for the white house, donald trump and hillary clinton are back on the trail today. trump will speak in iowa and clinton will attend a fund raiser in new york. neither trump nor clinton campaigned publicly yesterday but clinton's running mate had harsh words for trump while speaking in florida. tim kaine directly associated trump's values with those of the kkk. >> donald trump is their

welcome back, everyone. time right now is 8:40 and we're taking a live look from our tower camera. you can see the cloud cover out there. we'll let you know when the sunshine will peek through. happening today in oakland, hundreds of people will lace up their running shoes for a very good cause. it's the annual friends of faith walk and run. this is video from last year's event. it was named after a former reporter at ktvu. she died in 2002 after a long battle with breast cancer. one of the founders of the organization says money raised at the event helps uninsured breast cancer patients in the bay area. if you want to join the walk or

make a donation just head over to our website. after five years of drought, california is showing some progress. a newly released map from the u.s. drought monitor shows only a fifth of the state still falls under the category of exceptional drought. a year ago it was more than double our current number. >> reporter: just outside modesto farming communities like patterson are facing a crisis. there's barely enough water to irrigate crops. so little about a quarter of the local farms have stopped growing anything. >> he has over 12,000 acres that has not been farmed for the last several years and that has very sudden and severe economic ripple effect through these small communities. >> reporter: the water district is responsible for supplying water to a swath of land 50 miles long. the district gets all its

irrigation water from the delta canal. the contract allows them to take more than 140,000 acre feet. >> this year we're receiving 5% of that. >> reporter: but it will soon tap an unexpected source. used water from the nearby modesto sewage brant. the city flushes nearly 15 million gallons of water down the drain every day. that's roughly 15% of what they need. the waste water plant recently underwent a $150 million upgrade making this sewage recyclable. we're taking waste water and removing all the pollutants and different chemicals in order to produce clean water on the other end. >> right now that recycled water gets discharged into the san joaquin river. under a new agreement

stillinger at the coast, but sunny conditions for everyone with temperatures just on the cool side. in san jose your high will be 77 today. 68 in santa cruz and comfortable in the low 8 0z. we'll see some low 70s through palo alto, and because of those clouds san francisco downtown getting up to 65 degrees. lots of 70s through the north bay. pretty mild and napa mid-70s there. and temperatures in the east bay upper 60s to the low 70s for the most part into union city and castro valley. low 80s and mild in the inland east bay area. warmer in brentwood at about 87 degrees. all right. here's the forecast. notice the disparity between the high and low temperatures throughout the day. so you'll need to bring lots of
