good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 28th. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here is francis in for lisa argen. >> good evening, everyone. we're starting off with a lot of gray skies and overcast conditions. live doppler 7 showing us gray clouds over the bay area from cloverdale through san francisco and into san jose. and from mt. tam, the clouds should stick around and breezy around the bay. inland temperatures in the low 80s. around the bay, we'll see the low 70s. and at the coast we hover in the

low 60s. so there is a warm up coming up and i'll tell you that with the accuweather seven-day forecast. >> thank you. breaking news out of belmont this morning where police and the chp are investigating an officer-involved shooting. it happened around 3:00 this morning on the northbound lanes of highway 101 near the wellston avenue exit. a man was running back and forth on both sides of the freeway and did not comply with orders to get off and that is when officers used a taser on the man and they say he took out a knife and lunged toward an officer and one officer opened fire shooting him and the man is at a critical condition at at hospital. all northbound lanes reopened just over an hour ago. more breaking news, in fremont where a sig-alert is on effect on 685 after a deadly crash, just before 6:00 this morning on 680 northbound near washington boulevard.

the chp tells us at least one person is dead. traffic on 680 northbound is down to one lane right now. and breaking news overnight in the east bay, one person is dead after her car crashed, hitting a school building in san leandro. it happened around 2:30 this morning at kellen and bancroft. three girls were inside of the car which officers say was speeding when it hit a driveway and went airborne and hit a fence and collided into the side of the middle school. according to police, the girl who died was the driver. the two passengers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. they are expected to survive. developing news out of the south bay this morning, firefighters are still on scene of a four-alarm fire at a storage facility in san jose. it started around 9:00 last night at the public storage facility on felipe avenue near

101 and 680. crews say flames got out of control and quickly spreading to the second floor and nearby units. no word yet on the cause. fire officials say ten to 15 units have been damage. one firefighter suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover. the controversy now regarding colin kaepernick, the 49ers quarterback continues to grow this morning. after he refused to stand for the national anthem. at the start of friday night's game. now we're hearing from the niners head coach and former players about what his actions mean. abc 7 news reporter lonnie rivera has the story. >> reporter: colin kaepernick is competing for the starter position at quarterback for the 49ers this season. but his passing is not rally what everyone is talking about. >> regardless of your personal beliefs, stand out of respect because nothing you do in this game goes unnoticed.

>> it is not hard to miss him not standing, but sitting during the national anthem. >> considering he was the starter and the jewel of the media and he's fallen so quickly, i think that smiegt might -- might be something. >> reporter: kaepernick refused to stand up for a country that kills. >> and he has a platform to do that. >> reporter: whether on social media or at sporting events like this one, his decision is drawing a mixed bag of commentary from criticism to support. >> quite honestly, i might have some of the same mixed feeling. we represent a country that is supposed to be fair and balanced, that is not fair and balanced. >> he used to be a really big -- a really incredible player and i just think it is kind of -- i don't know, sad. >> i think it is disgusting. it's a lack of respect and there

is no excuse for it. >> former nfl player damian woody took to twitter saying he had ever right to express his feelings, beliefs and people have every right to disagree. in san francisco, lonnie rivera, abc 7 news. >> and this is rather rare, head coach chip kelly held a conference call with the media and took questions on the kaepernick controversy. apparently friday was not the first time kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem. he did the same thing last saturday when the team played at denver. coach kelly had this reaction. >> we recognize the right of any individual to choose to participate or not participate in the national anthem and so does the league. so the league statement is to encourage them and it is not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem. it is his right as a citizen. i haven't gotten any feedback from our players about the situation. we'll talk about it. >> kelly said he only talked to kaepernick about football and

will not encourage him to stand during the anthem. the niners, by the way, wrap up preseason on thursday in san diego. the father of a blind man rescued from a burning home has a message this morning for his son's rescuers. >> good stuff -- amazing people and they are to be admired and respected. >> it was on wednesday the two pittsburg police officer pulled the man out before firefighters even got there. the 65-year-old cal state east bay grad is in a medically induced coma with severe smoke inhalation. his father spoke to abc 7 news by phone yesterday from his home in washington state. he said doctors tell him his son is improving. >> his prognosis is still to be determined. they hopefully will have him -- be able to feed him or for him to take food in the next day or two. >> his father said his son's

home is destroyed. taylor's caretaker is now working to find him a new place to live. new details this morning in this attack caught on video in san francisco pacific heights neighborhood. san francisco police now have a sketch of the man seen here punching a woman repeatedly. this unprovoked attack happened last week near lay fayette park. abc 7 news visited the neighborhood on saturday but no one we spoke with recognized the man in the sketch. investigators say he appears to have dirty blond hair and a mole on his upper right check and he left the woman hurt and if you recognize the man, police want to hear from you. for the first time, how a kidnapping victim about a city where the police called her a liar. denise no longer feels safe living in vallejo and feels harassed by the police force. that statement comes in new

documents filed in her civil lawsuit against the city. vallejo is moving to dismiss the claim. her and her boyfriend were the victim of a home invasion in march of 2015. police called that kidnapping a hoax. even after the suspects arrest. she said her life has been destroyed, but she suffered from depression, anxiety and paranoia. a mid engine problem could have resulted in a horrific crash for a southwest jet carrying more than 100 people. everyone is safe and sound this morning. abc news reporter adrian banker tells us the stories of the passengers as she has the audio from inside of the cockpit. >> reporter: this morning stunning new images of an in-air emergency. >> it sounded like a tire blowing and started smelling smoke. >> reporter: this southwest flight from new orleans to orlando suffering a kacatastropc

engine failure. the 99 passengers on board had a clear view of the mangled engine housing as oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling. >> i could see metal pieces flapping. >> children were screaming and crying. >> reporter: and in their cockpit, the pilots run through an emergency checklist. >> disengaged. affected engine. >> this was an explosive engine and it put hot metal into the cabin and loosing pressure and people were on oxygen masks. >> reporter: and forcing them to divert to pensacola dropping over 20,000 feet in just eight minutes. >> my ears popped because we were going down fast. >> they are in an emergency decent and making sure that the passengers are okay. >> reporter: the boeing 737 landing safely in pensacola,

only 30 minutes after takeoff. southwest writing initial reports indicate there were no injuries among the 99 passengers and five crew members on board. adding it is cooperating with an ntsb investigation. and we continue to get more images of what passengers skpeerned both in the plane and -- experienced both in the plane and on the ground and most are so thankful to the pilots for keeping them alive. reagan national airport. >> so scary there. francis is here now talking about the bay area weather which has been cool for quite sometime. >> yeah, cooler than average. and in fact, we're starting to see the low clouds break up as we look at this live shot over san rafael. 60 degrees and warming up into the mid-70s and i'll have your neighborhood temperatures come up. thank you. and then the bay area gives back. and we check in with a local restaurant making a difference for the victims of the earthquake in italy. and later, the faithfulness

this afternoon. francis will be along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. cooking for a good cause, a san francisco restaurant is raising money for the victims of the deadly earthquake in italy by serving up a special dish. it is called the amatrice-amana, named after the city damaged in last week's creek. we are live on pacific avenue. this weekend all of the money from every dish sold is being donated to earthquake victims in italy. >> it is a big response. people were very supportive. >> the owner has family who survived the earthquake. he said more than $800 has been raised so far on that one pasta dish in just two days. 291 people died in the earthquake on wednesday, including a 9-year-old girl who died in her younger sister's

arms. the younger sister survived and at the little girl's funeral yesterday, the bishop recalled firefighters finding the girls in an embrace. today every museum in italy is donating all of the proceeds to earthquake rebuilding work. happening today here at home, there is a fundraiser for victims of the soberanes fire in monterey county. it is the biggest fire burning in california right now. and an illegal campfire sparked it more than a month ago. since then 91,000 acres have burned. the fire is 60% contained. today's fundraiser kicks off at 2:00 this afternoon at the winery and vineyard in carmel. good sunday morning. clouds again, they are starting to spill in. starting to pull back to the coast later on this afternoon. but right now we still have it over most of the bay area and into the east bay. here is a live shot in san francisco. where we see the low clouds

overhead near the transamerica tower. 60 in san francisco. oakland and mountain view at 63, san jose at 64 degrees and still in the 50s in morgan hill and half moon bay. we head over to sfo where the low cloud cereal are causing travel delays of about 30 minutes. keep that in mind if you are picking up someone at the airport. santa rosa, 59. low 60s in napa and fairfield and concord at 63 degrees and over the south bay looking overcast and gray. so we have the widespread low clouds during the morning hours and the mild pattern continues where we are slightly below normal and then warmer by the end of the week and i'll show you that with the accuweather seven-day forecast. even by lunchtime, most of the clouds pull back already. so a quick break in the clouds over the next few hours. then we stick around and see low clouds at the coast and that is why things would be a little bit cooler but everyone else, you are getting plenty of sunshine. highs today in san jose, 79.

85 in gilroy. nice at the brch in santa cruz, 70 degrees as well. in the lower part of the peninsula, look for low 70s. redwood city, 73, menlo park 72 and then at the coast, pacifica 61 and daly city only 59. today partly cloudy for the giants game today at 65 degrees. it is 1:05 game against the braves. novato is 78. one of the warmer spots. most areas in the mid-70s through sonoma and napa 76 and in the east bay look for numbers to range from upper 60s in richmond down to the mid -- or rather as the temperatures increase as we head south, down to mid-70s, fremont 74 degrees for you. inland areas, it is a little bit cooler than normal and i think you'll like that because temperatures will be mainly in the low 80s with san ramon hitting 80 and warmer in brentwood, getting up to as high as 87 degrees. so the clouds push in overnight again and with a marine layer we

could see drizzle into the coast and the east bay. most temperatures in the mid-50s. cooler spots in the low 50s like santa rosa and morgan hill and so here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. we're going to see a little bit of warmer weather today compared to yesterday. and then tomorrow we'll see a steady pattern staying below average into tuesday. breezy at the coast as well on wednesday. but will bump up a few degrees into thursday and friday looks like a warmer day for most everybody before a slight dip in the next weekend which will end up right back where we started for the three-day labor day weekend. so enjoy the weather. it is kind of nice to be a little bit below average, especially for inland areas. >> although a lot people have been complaining. >> san francisco, yes they have, so head inland. >> thank you, francis. today is the last day to take advantage of free admission to national parks. it is in honor of the national park service 100th birthday.

finney. here is the story. >> reporter: the catch that sent the 49ers to super bowl xvi is not only a big moment in 49ers history but it is huge in this family. andy was just four years old in 1982, and he recalls his father's reaction totories passed down by the family. >> my dad cried. his father was a niners fan and passed away before that. >> reporter: and he has the highlight of that game on vhs and has a football commemorating the catch autographed by montana and clark. when his wife toured the stadium with him and saw how much he admired the bricks, she knew what she had to do. she purchased one for him as a surprise. >> because i left him. >> reporter: she kept the secret a secret. a replica arrived in the mail when shelly was at work. >> he opened it and it was

surprising. >> what did you do? what is this. >> reporter: it was supposed to be installed in the stadium by the summer. but the 49ers told her at a taylor swift concert forced the delay and then a little thing called super bowl 50 at levi stadium. and she would learn before the super bowl that the brick promotion ended in december. at that point, both gave up hope of seeing the brick installed. >> i think we paid $300 for the brick to sit by my tv. that was a little bit disappointing. >> reporter: this summer shelly called 7 on your side and we contacted the 49ers and they told us, we are pleased that we were able to coordinate the construction schedule to get his brick to the rightful place in the 49ers fan-walk before the start of the 2016 season. the couple went wait to see the brick and he saw other notable names before he found his. >> there is jerry rice right

for lease -- lisa argen. >> clouds around the coast and bay but we are getting breaks as you could see from the live shot from the east bay looking toward the bay. we still have the low clouds throughout the morning hours. by noon the clouds will just be at coast and then breezy this afternoon but sunny conditions for most everybody. inland, highs in the low 80s. around the bay, look for low 70s. and still 60s at the coast. you will will find that -- will find that all week long. sunset at 7:44 and temperatures are comfortable. i have a warm-up coming up with the accuweather seven-day forecast. >> francis, thank you. and we want to update you on the breaking news out of belmont. a man has life-threatening injuries after a chp officer shot him this morning. the chp said the man was on both sides of highway 101 when officers tried to get him off

the freeway. when he did not cooperate, they tased him but that is when they say he pulled out a knife and lunged toward an officer. the chp said one of their officers opened fire, shooting him. the man is in custody in the hospital. walnut creek recorded the first homicide of the year and the suspect has not been caught yet. police are still piecing together the details of friday night's shooting. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> reporter: he was out with his friends and fiancee when something went terribly wrong. >> you heard about six pops go off real quick. >> there was a lot of police here. i looked and there was one guy on the floor. >> reporter: shun shot brown in the -- someone shot brown in the back three times and they think he was targeted because what they called a confrontation but after he left the sports bar,

the suspect came from an opposite direction and started shooting. i spoke to his sister seen here on the left by phone. >> somebody got into it, knowing him, he don't want to fight. he didn't fight. he wasn't a fighter. he tried to walk away. and the guy shot him. >> reporter: brown lived in vallejo with his older daughter while his 14-year-old lives in oakland with her mother. >> he was a family man, he loved his kids. definitely loved his daughters. >> reporter: the brown siblings chose to live the bay area and move to texas because of the violence. but he chose to stay. >> i just knew eventually i was going to -- something like this was going to happen because it is just too bad now, in the bay, it is just way too bad. >> reporter: police meantime are scouring the intersection and checking surveillance cameras from area businesses and they stress, finding this murderer is their top priority. still downtown regulars admit this shooting has shaken them

and their weekend habits may change as a result. >> i'll still come but probably won't stay as late. until closing. i will get out before anything starts happening. >> police continue to follow-up on leads. in wall net creek, abc 7 news. new this morning, chicago police say two brothers have been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of the cousin of nba star dwyane wade. 26-year-old darwin sorrels jr. and 22-year-old darren sorrels were charged this morning. wade's cousin was shot on friday while walking to register her child for school. some milpitas residents are tired of holding noses. they want to stop plans to double the size of a landfill. abc 7 news was in milpitas when several families aired complaints near a popular cyc

cycling trail near the landfill. the landfill has nearly reached capacity. >> the citizens want this dump ground to be closed and that would be in line with the lifestyle of the bay area. no other city has to deal with this. >> this november residents will vote on measure l. to decide on the landfill's future. milpitas has sued the operator over the smells coming from the facility. on to politics now and republican donald trump will come to california for a fundraising trip this week. and a group of local accountants will rally today urging trump to release his tax returns. democrat hillary clinton did not campaign yesterday, instead received a briefing on threats against america. abc news reporter elizabeth hur has the story. >> reporter: hillary clinton spent two hours at an fbi office

in white plains, new york, not answering more e-mail questions but getting her first top secret national briefing as a presidential candidate. we have obtained e-mails between then top clinton foundation doug vand and clinton's inner circle when she was secretary of state. in one exchange, a request for foundation for invitations to a state lunch with the chinese president and on the list executives from three groups that donated millions to the foundation. donald trump called it corruption. >> it is hard to tell where the clinton foundation ends and where the state department begins. >> reporter: clinton said -- >> my work as secretary of state was not influenced by any outside forces. >> reporter: trump facing criticism himself after working the friday murder of nba star dwyane wade's cousin into his stump speech. >> it breaks all of our hearts to see it, it is horrible. it's horrible. >> reporter: trump tied the

some young people making a difference in the world came to san francisco this past week to receive a major award for their work. jonathan bloom talked to the teenage leaders who are taking on society's biggest problems. >> i started an organization when i was 11 years old. >> corin is not your average teenager. she got the idea on the way home. >> it was a coldest day of the year and there was a man outside with nothing but a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. >> reporter: they collect and contribute le contribute for clothes left behind at ski organizations. >> the concept is very old and it goes back probably a thousand years to the mystical rabbis in the land of israel. >> it is repairing the world and

to me it is just having someone get better and feel happy and have a smile on their face. >> kayla started her charity in florida, collecting toys and movies and video games for kids who are hospitalized, kids just like her. >> i spent a lot of time in medical facilities, whether it is my crohn's disease and it is so boring and i wanted to change that. >> and for some teens who started program this is their own neighborhood, the funding will let them expand across the country. >> it will expand from southern california to arizona and wherever my feet land. >> and they are making reading cool again. >> we work with kids who are ten years old and they can't pick up a book or formulate a sentence. >> reporter: the prize includes $36,000 which will help the san diego chill afford hockey equipment. >> it is for kids with special needs to give the kids help. >> reporter: and alexandria will visit more schools with understanding autism.

forecast. in sports, the giants are trying to catch up with the dodgers but after yesterday's last against the braves their down to two games behind l.a. later today the little league match-up between new york and south korea and the game is at noon and right here on abc 7. and raiders played at home for the first time this season. and here is rick with all of the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning. with jake peavy on the disabled list, suarez got the start last night against atlanta. hum, baby. out to san francisco. a cross down the left field line and that is fair and that is crawford's 12th home run of the season. suarez did not give up a hit until the fourth with two men on, kemp gets all of this and deep to center.

they could only watch. braves on top 3-1. and doubled the leadoff and left stranded and they strike out and with the dodgers winning l.a. lead in the west is back to two games. the a's at st. louis. the cards wearing the 1927 throw-back unis. the redbirds took the lead in the second and to left for a solo shot. it is his 18th homer of the reason. st. louis tacks on another run in the third. the hotshot off of healy for an error and they score and it is 2-0. and in the eighth, muncie grounds to moss. this one is wide. davis scores to make it 2-2. and then a fly ball to medium center field and healy gets up to third and he has the game-winning run and the a's beat the 3-2 and healy extended his hitting stream to 13 strapt

game. last week against green bay, the raiders failed to score a touchdown. last night they found the touchdown twice but still came up short. they played host to the titans. after falling behind 7-0, carr finds crab free for 41ars and loses his helmet but hangs on to the ball. a few plays later it is carr to washington and the rookie is in for the score and also has 55 yards rushing. second quarter and the raiders take the lead and to cooper who stays inbounds and make it 14-13. and a short pass to washington and he is popped by sean spence. the ball comes loose and david bass will take it all the way for a touchdown. tennessee wins 27-14 and the raiders fall to 1-2 and they next play seattle on thursday. >> it is good to move the ball and show what we've been working on just a little bit but we'll play them here in a few weeks so you can't show too much. so we kept it pretty basic.

and fairfield and concord and livermore also in the low 60s. and here is a look at the overcast conditions in the downtown san jose area. so we do have the widespread low clouds once again. we are going to be in the mild pattern that will continue. and then just a little bit warmer by the end of the week. so i'll show you that in the accuweather seven-day forecast. here is a look at the clouds. it pulls back quickly so even this afternoon we get plenty of sunshine. we still see low clouds along the coast and that is why i think we'll stay in the 60s. there 70s around the bay. 80s inland. so the exact highs for your neighborhood, mild for inland communities like antioch, 84. around the bay, pretty comfortable as well. richmond 68. san rafael and parts of the north bay will be in the mid-70s as well, through napa and 76, san francisco 65 degrees and downtown san jose, 79 degrees. sunny there and morgan hill in the low 80s. now, if you are heading to the beach, here is what it looks like right now.

in santa cruz, 59 degrees and a lot of folks are wearing hoodies and sweatshirts and you will need it as it will warm up to 70 and you will get more sunshine but other beaches with the clouds will keep things in the low 60s for you. we're going to talk about the week ahead and we've been talking about how much cooler than average we are. for example, in livermore, our average high is 87. today only a high of 83. and notice we stay right around that area until friday where we bump up a little bit and then come back down for next saturday. also, a lot of folks are heading to burning man, opening day is today. and it is breezy in the afternoon. winds from the west up to 20 miles per hour. highs will be in the low 90 the for the most part with the exception of tuesday, dropping down to 88. and the lows will be in the 50s. so you need to dress in layers. here is a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. so we have got a pleasant week ahead. just slightly warmer today, which will be nice for sunday. steady pattern into tomorrow and

thousands of dollars in grants to grassroots organizations that help low-income women and men with breast cancer here in the bay area. stanford is revamping the first day ice breaker. it will use aprogram that allows students to record their name and gender and it was created by graduates. they started using it for commencement ceremonies last year to make sure names are pronounced correctly. it is the first time offered at the start of the a school year. about 300 students so far have registered their name and the first day for class for undergrads is one month away. uc berkeley students are celebrating the reopening of bowles hall following a $45 million renovation. cal provided these pictures. grad students and professors will all live there and participate in weekly dinners
