live where you live this is abc7 news. >> thought he could be like me or one of masons. >> police in the south bay say an extremely dangerous convicted sex offender is on the prowl trying to kidnap young women. i'm eric thomas. thank you for joining us this sunday night. he is david russell and they say he is responsible for two incidents over the past week. the first at meridian and am milton avenue and -- hamilton avenue. lilian kim is live in the willow glen neighborhood with the details. >> reporter: this is one of the two locations that now has residents on the lookout san jose police say he is extremely dangerous. david russell, a convicted sex offender on the streets. his first known target was a young female near hamilton and

meridian avenues. he tried to engage the young female and then grabbed her and covered her moth and tried to drag her to the car. she fought him off and got away and so did the second known target four miles away near south san jose. nevertheless, the woman we talk to found the news unsettling. >> i have been here at night with my friends filling up my gas tank so it could have easily been me or one of my friends. >> reporter: police posted fliers that along with photos have an image of a white suv he may be driving. they believe it is a newer model nissan rogue with no plates. she works in willow glen and now says she will be on the lookout. >> not exactly black belt, but glad to have some of those skills. >> now husbands are concerned for the safety of their

wives. >> my wife runs from our house which is a couple blocks from the road every evening. now it is scary to even see her walk out of the house. >> which is why everyone is hoping police will find russell soon. th san jose, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> more than a hundred people gathered to remember an east bxy teenager killed in an early morning car crash. abc news was in union city as they came together with the 17-year-old at james logan high where he was a linebacker and running back on the football team. around 1:30 he was driving on 880 near west a street when he crashed into a pick up truck. two passengers in the car and two people in the truck went to the hospital. his friends and teammates are heart broken by the sudden loss. >> he was the type of player who would run through the wall for his teammates and his brothers and coaches. he was the one going and helping kid.

not only in football, but off the field in class and saw -- society. he was the glue in our family that kept us going. >> the chp is still investigating the cause of the crash. the highway patrol and oakland police are investigating a freeway crash and gunshots fired in about the same area. sergio was at the scene for most of the evening. certainly crow? >> -- sergio. >> they are not saying the shots fired at that crash on the freeway are somehow connected to the r -- to the crash that happened before. >> the three-car crash happened before 5:00 p.m. >> the silver mercedes was passing on the shoulder unlawfully and potentially merging into traffic. >> the passengers of the men knee van told us off camera that the driver of the suv crashed into them and the

four-door sedan. when all three vehicles came to a screeching halt, the driver of the mercedes jumped out and ran down the freeway shoulder. police started getting reports of shots fired. >> the crime scene is just a few yards away from the crash scene that the california highway patrol is dealing with. >> it is not clear who was shooting and who that person was shooting at. investigators are hesitant to say if the two incidents are connected. >> the shooting and the accident at this point, we don't know if they are linked. that's being looked into. if anyone can get information about that, give us a call. >> the person who ran away was not found and the person who fired several shots is gone. they suffered minor injuries in the crash. they were sent to a local hospital as a precaution. abc7 news. >> clean up crews are working to contain a fuel leak from a

riverboat that capsized in the delta. you can see the spirit of sacramento upside down near bethel island. it ran into mechanical problems and it began taking on water before sinking overnight. the fish and wildlife officers worry 600 gallons of diesel in the fuel tanks. >> that's why we take it seriously and we need to get it out of the environment. it is no longer harming the fish and the wildlife. >> the spirit of sacramento's new owners bought it at an auction. the trouble began when the boat had mechanical problems and took on water. here is what it looked like before this morning's mishap. the spirit of sacramento appeared in a 1950s john wayne movie, blood alley. >> for the second day in a row they had to rescue someone from the water near aquatic park. they pulled the man from the water just after noon today. they performed cpr at the scene.

firefighters have asked the beachgoers to take precautions because of the cold water conditions. 15 children and one adult had to be rescued from the water in the same area. a 50-foot catamaran started to go under. everyone was wearing life vests. aside from a few bumps and bruises no one was seriously hurt. the -- the fresno county jail's main lobby was reopened after two officers were shot and wounded. one is a football coach at fresno christian high and the success -- suspect is facing charges. they are accepting donations to help the families of the officers injured. for information go to our website, abc7news.com. the former dean at uc berkeley's law school is back at his office after resigning amid accusations. he resigned in the spring after being suspended. the dean's assistant sued uc berkeley claiming he made

in both cases the women fought him off and got away. more than a hundred people gathered at logan high school to remember a football player who died in an early morning car crash on 880. he was a linebacker and running back and a leader on and off the field. the chp is investigating the cause of the crash. oakland police and the highway patrol are trying to figure out if a car crash on 880 this afternoon and a shooting on a nearby off-ramp were connected. two people were hurt in the car crash and no one was hurt in the shooting. one person ran away from the crash and police have not found the shooter. there are warnings and closures in new jersey and new york because of tropical storm hermine. it has the potential to get stronger tomorrow. the storm woornings -- warnings have prompted many people to cancel their plans.
