overheated rhetoric i received on twitter today, including this is just trying to erase history and others saying it is long overdue, this is a touchy subject. students at francis scott key elementary in san francisco sunset district may not know the man who pens the star-spangled banner also owned slaves but matt haney does and said it is time to consider a name change. >> our school name communicates something to our kids. it says something about who we want them to be and about what we value. so it is important. >> reporter: also on his list, jefferson elementary and george washington high where a large statue of the first president stands in the lobby, and he too was a slave owner. but ninth grader caitlyn and her dad rob say leave the name alone. >> it is in the past. >> we've been using that name for a very long time. it has been working. just leave it. >> reporter: but on the other side, this parent said they

while driving in oakland road in north san jose. police got numerous tips to track him down. officers had been looking for him since last week when a police member say he assaulted and tried to kidnap two young women in san jose. investigators may have a break in a 20-year-old case of missing student at calpoly in san bowe is obispo. kristen stewart left in 1996 and her body has never been found but investigators started digging on a hillside near the campus and will continue to dig throughout the week and they've zeroed in on the area where the help of specially trained fbi dogs. and that happened this year. investigators still not sure exactly what they are going to find. >> exciting at times with leads we've uncovered over the last six years have produced and the truth is that until it is done, we want to continue to manage our expectations. >> investigators are also looking at several other areas but they would not go into details about where they are.

a shocking murder in san pablo last night. a pregnant teen was shot and she and her unborn child both died. this happened on 17th street near downer elementary school. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman visited the area looking for answers and joins us now from the san pablo police department. any idea what happened here. >> reporter: good afternoon, larry. we would love to have more answers. the local police department aren't giving us many details because they are very busy working the case. i could tell you what neighbors told me today when i went into the neighborhood. last night around 7:00 p.m., alicia mccoy, 18 years old showed up at the corner of 17th and turner and got into the argument with the occupants of the house on the corner and shots rang out and she was lying on the street and friends of hers tell us it is a very dangerous area. >> every time my mom and my sister goes out, i worry that something would happen to them. >> reporter: when fernando padilla went to the corner in

san pabbo today, it was an act of sole as. last night his friend died from gunshot wounds in an attack that also killed her unborn child and police have yet to reveal many other details. >> i won't get into motives or suspect information. we're currently working some very valuable leads. we've gotten some cooperation from the public. >> reporter: neighbors told us this morning that whoever shot mccoy did so from a car and then sped off. they claim to not know either the victim or the shooter. san pablo police say they do have leads, they are making progress. otherwise, no more information, less they jeopardize their case. >> we are very touched by what happened which is why we're working so diligently to put this together. >> wayne freedman, abc 7 news. police are looking for four masked robbers who followed a dublin family and stole items from their home. a mother and three children pulled into the driveway on north terrace drive around 9:30

on sunday night and they were entering the house through the garage when the robbers followed them inside. two had handguns. they ransacked the house and stole personal items and then left in a white infinite sedan. a man faces charged after san francisco police discovered nearly 60 firearms last week in his pacific heights home. you see many of the weapons in this photo right here. they include 17 semi automatic rifles, including machine guns. jack dane now faces several gun-related charges. police were called to his home by a friend of his that reported gunfire and said dane was having a psychotic breakdown. we're learning more about the hours leading up to the arrest of former san francisco 49ers fullback bruce miller and the trail leads back to a popular san francisco restaurant. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow is live at the marriott hotel in san francisco with the details. melanie? >> reporter: well, larry, the fight that involved bruce miller happened here at the marriott around 2:45 on monday morning

and as you said, restaurant employees are saying they escorted mill fresh a san francisco hot spot a couple of hours earlier, just two miles from here. bruce miller's labor day weekend ended with this booking photo early on monday morning. sundays are for the boys, the now 49ers player posted on instagram a day earlier at palm house on union street. miller was with friends here. but the general manager said he was alone when he came in at 11:50 on sunday night. >> he did wobble while he was standing. he did lean on a lot of things to keep himself up. >> he said miller stood at the counter looking at the meat for a while. >> he really wanted one of tommy's sandwiches. >> reporter: problem was he didn't seem to have any money. >> he eventually gave up and he sat down for about 20 minutes and then he stood back up and went back at it with a -- with a guest trying to get their sandwich. >> that is when another manager intervened and escorted him out. and two miles away and two hours

later this surveillance with miller staggering and his forehead covered in blood caught the attention of employees at the fisherman wharf travel lodge to called 911. >> when i saw him, i thought he was intoxicated so he got -- maybe he bumped his head somewhere. >> reporter: san francisco police say it was across the street that miller tried to get into somebody else's room at the marriott. he is charged with assaulting a 70-year-old man and his 29-year-old son. both have bins season released from the hospital. miller was also injured. by phone his agent confirmed he received several stitches. you could see them in his booking photo. miller's agent said he is trying to get to the bottom of what happened. so are police. >> an assault occurred and we have to treat everything and treat everybody equally. >> reporter: the san francisco 49ers released miller from the team. co be in court as early as this week. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. we sent out breaking news alerts when bruce miller's mug shot was released. he could be the first to know when news breaks by downloading the abc 7 news app.

it is free for apple and android devices. the san jose airport has finished installing higher fences to try to improve security. the spokesperson told us that the fence line has been raised to 11 feet in key areas. improvements were made after a series of security breaches in which people broke through the fences or scaled them. the airport is looking for additional federal funding to add more surveillance cameras and sensory-type technology. new evacuations were ordered in butte county as a wildfire continues to spread. this saddle fire has burned 840 acres near paradise. it is 10% contained. hundreds of structures are threatened and at least three have been destroyed. the fire started monday afternoon. it is burning off of pence and lime saddle roads. fire investigators don't yet have a cause. and between a spare the air alert and soaring temperatures, tomorrow could get uncomfortable. meteorologist sandhya patel here with that now. >> reporter: larry, since we

you've probably seen ads promising education for the future. thousands of itt tech students are stranded after the couple announced it would shut the doors effective immediately. campuses are located in oakland and concord. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez has more on what students need to know. >> reporter: itt tech students commiserated on the unfortunate circumstances. >> this is my last day coming up. >> reporter: the school was already closed for the quarter break and now it will remain that way permanently.

randy, a veteran, used his gi bill money to live on while he attended itt. >> i used that money to help take care of my family. and it is like -- a full-time stur student of two and one on the way. >> reporter: the school is being investigated at the state and federal level for the recruiting and accounting practices. some argued they couldn't keep their promises. >> to provide them with career training and give them good jobs and none of those things appeared to have materialized. >> reporter: finally the department of education told itt they could no longer enroll new students on federal financial aid. >> and i was on financial aid and they told me that, you know, it was supposed to pay the $46,000, i would only pay $22,000 but still a lot of money that i can't afford right now. >> martinez had taken out a loan to cover the $22,000. jason cone, a parent, was surprised as how quickly they

helped finance his daughter's education. >> my credit is shot. i was surprised. i thought we would go some other avenue and when she said it is all good. >> reporter: the company that owned the 130 campuses blames the department of education for forcing it to shut down saying there was a complete disregard by the department of education for due process to the company. and the school is letting students know they could transfer some credits to other schools. in concord, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. nine people were arrested after a black lives matter matter down the london city airport. nine people chained themselves to the pavement and they wanted to highlight about how air pollution around the airport are hurting neighbors that are minority and poor. a san francisco based chair sit working as a fundraising arm for black lives matter. international development exchange or idex began a partnership a year ago.

said medical identity theft could lead to all kinds of problems. >> if a thief gets your pled med -- medical identity, they could use it to get surgery or medical goods like wheelchairs and cleaning up the bills an the charges could take years. and really negatively affect your credit score. >> according to the medical identity fraud alliance, once your medical records get mixed with a criminals, you could get the wrong diagnosis or the wrong treatment. >> one of the best ways to protect yourself is to make sure you always have copies of your medical records. that way if a thief adulter ates them, you could prove they've been altered. >> and check your medical records once a year to make sure they are accurate and read each benefit from your insurance company and call immediately if you see anything fishy. and if you lose your health insurance card ask for a new i.d. number and a new card. deborah ford finally got her name cleared but it took five

years. and $1,500 in legal fees. >> almost half of medical identity theft occurs when a family member takes a relative's health insurance card or other i.d. or when people knowingly share their information with someone they know. now remember, allowing a friend or relative to use your medical insurance is fraud. that is illegal and could you go to jail for that. so don't be passing your card around. >> five years to clear up is a long time. >> it is amazing. >> thank you, michael. and listen to this one and look at this video. a home security camera captured this trespasser outside of a house in hillsborough. it was spotted after 10:30 on parrot drive and police released this photo to remind you that the hills are a natural habitat for mountain lions. and marine biologists say most pop lakes of humpback whales are no longer on the species list.

of the reason we have a spare the air alert for tomorrow. 23489 santa rosa. concord and livermore, low to mid-90s. it is in the low 90s right now. you just might want to hit the beach tomorrow in santa cruz as it is going to get warm to hot. spare the air tomorrow. inland temperatures near 100 degrees inland. we haven't seen temperatures really soaring for a months. we've gotten a break. the cooler pattern will come back on thursday. so the air quality does suffer tomorrow. santa clara the worst of it. moderate. take mass transit if possible. tomorrow morning when you get going, temperatures will begin in the low 50s to the low 60s. pretty clear except for a few patches of fog near the bay and along the coastline and your hour-by-hour forecast. so the limited fog at 5:00 a.m. and sticking around until 7:00 a.m., not going to last much longer. the teams start to rise as the -- the temperatures start to rise as the fog burns off and the temperatures continue to rise into the afternoon hours.

here is how hot it will get in the south bay. 96 in gilroy. up to 90 in san jose and the south bay. you notice warm around sunnyvale and the peninsula in redwood city and palo alto, 82 in san mateo and low to mid-70s near the coastline so if you are not used to this kind of warmth, it is a bit uncomfortable and keep that in mind. you could always track the hour by hour temperatures on the abc 7 news app so download that to help you plan and prepare. 75 in the sunset district. 80 in downtown san francisco. north bay, 90, 94 in santa rosa. you notice in the east bay, sunscreen weather. low to mid-80s around berkeley and oakland. 84 in herklies and 89 in castro valley. inland, 100 in brentwood, 95 in san ramon. i want to take you down quickly to baja, california, where we have hurricane newton pounding and it is a category one storm and it is expected to make a land fall and it made the first

landfall today and over northwest mexico where they will see needing rains. if you have family or friends there, half a foot to a foot. could see isolated areas of up to 18 inches and then it weakens to a tropical storm across the desert and they are expecting a couple of inches of rain and if you have traveling, there will be issues there. and the forecast, what to expect. it is going to get hot tomorrow. upper 90s and low 20i7s at the coast. not so hot for thursday. temperatures begin to come down. low 90s inland and mid-60s coast and a secluded day for friday, only in the 80s. that is a nice relief for those of you who do not like the hot weather. temperatures come up a few and down a few. but by monday and tuesday, live doppler 7 will be tracking more fog. low 60s to the low 80s, it will be a nice change of pace. >> yeah. so the heat is short-lived. we could handle that. >> that beach was looking pretty good. >> it was, right. >> speaking of pretty pictures. we want to thank abc 7 news

changes are coming to disney world. the park is requiring children between the ages of 3 to 9 to have their finger prints scanned. this will block the use of stolen and shared tickets. now parents who fool uncomfortable with having their child's fingers scanned could use their own instead. disney is the parent company of abc 7 news. california has a strong tool to fight water wasting. a governor signed a law to punish anyone who used too much water. each district will determine what is average. anyone who goes over that amount will be penalized either paying a fine or a higher rate. tomorrow, july water conservation numbers will be released. water officials will believe it will show people are saving water and they want that to continue. and drought conditions are not to blame for a vanishing sea in central asia. nasa released pictures of the lake from the year 2000 are on the left and from 2001, i should

say and from this year on the right. at one point, it was the fourth largest lake in the entire world. well now after decades of being drained for irrigation, it is nearly gone. that lake is sandwiched between kazig stan and uzbekistan. an hour from now, jeff williams will land back on earth. williams, the guy on the far left there, said good-bye to his crew mates on the international space station earlier. he and two russian cosmonauts will land in kazakhstan. during his time in space. he shot great photos and sharing them on twitter, including this one of san francisco bay. and another out of this world view, bahama reeves and sand waves and he caught this image of the caribbean and gulf of mexico region. just amazing. and he sent owl a final tweet before leaving space saying, i will certainly miss this view. he has spent more time in space than any other u.s. astronaut.
