3:02 pm
you know? >> yeah. >> yeah? >> and just growing up and the neighbors that came with it. where we lived, there was a big old hill where you could see hay bales out the back, and i knew my mom could holler out the back door, and if we weren't in hollering distance, honey, it was trouble. >> that's true. >> when i was a little kid, i used to always think, "oh, we live in such a big house. it's so crazy." and then, like, i get nostalgic, and i would, like, drive by again when i'd go home to canada, and i'd think, "that's it?" (laughter) "okay." >> what about you, leah? >> we moved around a lot, my mom and i. she was a single mom, and we just moved around, man. >> that was us. our first street was sunshine lane. >> oh, cute. >> wow. >> i'll never forget it to this day 'cause i thought, "how fun." single mom and i had this house and these two kids, and she goes "we're moving somewhere bright, honey." we moved to sunshine lane, and that was our first house. >> okay, so speaking of sunshine, what is the first thing that you look for in a new house? like, for me, it is sunshine. it's light. i have to have that natural light. what about you guys? >> i think light is really important, and i think, for me, open space. >> oh, yes. >> like, i prefer one big, open area versus a bunch of tiny, little rooms. i just like to feel, like, just an openness to life, yeah. >> and for me, you know, creating a home is so important
3:03 pm
to me for everyone else, but when it comes to my own home, i really just look for familiarity. i want it to feel like a home. do you know what i mean? it has to just reach up and greet me and tell me this is the space. >> but don't you think you walk in and you know right away? >> yes. >> i think there's something about it. >> it can't be sterile either. i think it has to have that vibe when you walk in that it feels like it's you no matter where you walk in. >> but how do you make it feel cozy? like, for me, it's candles, it's, you know, flowers, but also rugs for me make everything really, really cozy. i love rugs. >> oh, i think the people. for me it's the people. >> oh, god, joe, you make me sound so-- >> oh, sure, you can have your candle. >> i'm like, rugs and things i can buy, and he's like, "it's the people." >> it's not your son. it's the candle. (laughing) >> all right, well, traditionally people worry more about making the inside of their home the cozy part, but you can and should keep the outdoor portion in mind when making it an inviting place for your family and friends, so i want to show you guys something pretty cool. this bench that you guys are sitting on-- leah, if you don't mind... >> let me show you guys. >> this used to be a headboard

and a coffee table. isn't that cute? so, let me break this down for you. >> this is amazing. >> isn't that cool? >> that is great. >> so, listen. go to your garage or a garage sale or even a thrift store-- heck, even a back alley-- >> i'm not mad at it. (laughter) >> or a big trash day and find yourself a headboard, and now, you can use a twin or a full-size is my recommendation, and then what i did was find an extra coffee table that was sufficient to the same size, and then we just adhered it to the back. we just stood some 90-degree-angle supports underneath the back and stapled them in there. >> that's so great. >> and it's fantastic. >> it's so cute. >> and it's so comfortable. >> yeah, you throw some cushions on it. >> who would have known? >> well, i also want to attract your attention over there to these little planters. now, these are just side tables or end tables. you can find them, again, in your garage sales, your own garage, or even a thrift store or maybe when your grandmama dies. (laughter) and you just paint them that funky color to make 'em look-- >> that's fun. that pop color is so great. >> it is. >> and that's what i like about it. and you added such fun color to it. >> and what's cool about it is, you use the drawers for actual planters. so, i don't recommend that you

actually plant things in the drawers, 'cause the wood can sometimes warp and get nasty, but you can put your pots right in it, and it's a really fun way to just add an extra side table outside. you can throw a glass of coffee or... >> wine. >> i like the way you think. (laughter) >> peas in a pod. >> yeah, exactly. >> more fun. >> right on top of it, and it's a great way to add some extra life to your outdoor living spaces. >> it really is. >> don't you think so? >> i would have never thought of that. you're so good. >> well, thank you, trish. well, we can't forget about this outdoor rug from nourison industries as well. >> this is outdoor? >> it's an outdoor rug. >> oh, it is? >> and this is a necessity for making sure your porch has that extra-cozy feel. plus, it's washable, which i love. >> i do too, 'cause i have dogs, and dogs don't always know what an outdoor rug is. >> that's true. >> they just get excited when they see a rug. and they're the greatest things 'cause you can actually, again, clean it and hose it off and it's-- >> that's amazing. >> and it adds another textural element to the theme so it doesn't feel like it's just an old mosquito back porch. >> yes. >> but i'd almost use this indoor, too, so that if you do have doggy problems... >> that's what i do, yes. >> ...it's easier to clean. >> most of my rugs are indoor/outdoor. >> that's a good tip. >> yeah. >> okay, well, speaking of bringing the inside out, trish,

i hear that you brought some of your must-have gardening items from inside your garage, so tell us what you did. >> i sure did. now, for me, i am-- everything's got to be mobile and organized. that's my jam. so, i brought my caddy, which is easy and breezy. and 29 bucks, you can grab this online, y'all, quick and simple. but for me, i like finding things that are a little bit outside the box. and so, i'm a big-- i won't say i have a green thumb. i have a thumb i've had to train to be green. so, this is such a great little thing. these are called sprouts, and these are these fun little pencils. when it gets all the way used at the bottom, honey, gets down to the end, look, it's all the herbs. thyme, you've got sage, yes. >> oh. >> you throw it right in the planter, and you water that bad boy, and they just grow away. so, you've got-- >> oh, wait, there's seeds in the-- >> seeds. >> wow. >> get out of here. i thought this was a garden marker. >> no, honey. >> how much are they? >> 17 bucks for the pack, so not only are you gonna use it as a pencil, you've then got the herb garden after the fact, so don't think i just told y'all to pay $17 for pencils. i'm not nuts. (laughter) >> this is amazing. i've never used a pencil to the nub in my entire life.
3:07 pm
>> me neither. i don't even know what a pencil is anymore. >> i'm gonna start now. >> i know, but it makes you want to use a pencil. 'cause i thought, "oh, you know what? these are great." but i use 'em in the house on scratch pads. >> yeah, so cute. great idea. >> i know, i love 'em. now, this is super fun. so, this little, blue friend right here in the middle of our herb garden, that is flower power, and it literally connects its bluetooth sensor, okay, that talks to an app on your phone, 'cause you know, your plants need a voice. they need somebody to talk for 'em. i just made it real hippy-dippy. okay, but it actually monitors the soil, the water level, and lets you know, like, "hey, girl, you've had a lot going on. get in there and water your plant. i need you." >> that's good. >> so, it's so great, and it's 60 bucks, but it actually just never dies, so it recharges in the sun. you've got it yourself. it's on your phone, and if you can't kill a plant... >> and it saves the plant, so you're saving money there by not having to replace the plant. >> you know what? i just did gardening last weekend 'cause i was so excited about getting in the yard, and i got to tell you, those things need water every day. >> every day. >> it's crazy. >> it's like a kid. you have to feed it every day. >> it is, and i've got to worry about my dog's not chewing it all up, 'cause my girl's got a thing for mint.
