oakland where there is serious fallout from the sex scandal involving police officers. in fact, at this moment, we're waiting for a news conference to begin involving the mayor libby schaaf. the l.a. times reports she's going to announce that four officers will be fired. they were connected to the scandal involving celeste gap, an escort who had sex with officers from several departments and four while she was underage. the l.a. times has reported that oakland will discipline 12 other police officers. abc 7 news reporter katie is at this news conference and will bring us a live report on the action of the officers coming up on abc 7 news at 6:00. the search for a person who shot and killed a pregnant woman and her unborn child ended after a standoff and the overnight arrest of the victim's friend. officers arrested the 21-year-old following the stand-off. a person of interest turned himself into police. they are believed to be friends of the 18-year-old mccoy, who was seven months pregnant when

she was killed two days ago. investigators believe morales went to defend coy during an argument in a group of people when he fired a gun and unintentionally shot her. a convicted sex offender arrested by san jose police yesterday made his first court appearance today. the 56-year-old david lee russell is accused of trying to kidnap two women. i could see -- you could see he shaves a mustache and goatee to avoid being arrested. he was arrested after citizens tipped off police to his whereabouts. he did not enter a plea today. police say he tried kidnapping two women in broad daylight last week by dragging them into his car. both fought russell off. the rust is due back in -- the suspect is due back in court september 14th. police need your help identifying this man in the surveillance video caught on camera taking two road bikes from a home on willow street. the man appears to be in his 30s and wearing a watch with a wide band. if you recognize him, please

call the san jose police department. authorities believe they've caught the man suspected in the string of bank robberies. police say the 55-year-old robert dennis of oroville is the man in these surveillance photos taken during a bank heist in lafayette last month. they also believe he is responsible for hold-ups in napa, brentwood, roseville and sacramento. officers arrested dennis last week in butte county where he was just arrested on felony drug charges. at san jose state, some are questioning the university's handling of a sexual harassment case involving an education professor and one of his students. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen has more. >> on the campus of san jose state university -- >> i didn't think that something like this would hit so close. obviously right here in my department. and it is very upsetting. >> reporter: a new report by our media partners at the mercury news indicated a professor kept his job and his position as a department chair five months after a university investigation

found that he sexually harassed a student. last year a female student said that during a class, after he repeatedly asked if she was single and said he wanted to date her and personnel files concluded he acted inappropriately and he stepped down from his role as department chair at the end of the school year. one student said after he was popular with classmates. >> some of them like his classes and went to him for counting and he was just -- counseling and he was a great guy. >> reporter: two other students complained of his behavior in 2014. his attorney said her client wasn't given a fair opportunity to defend against the allegations. >> there was much weight given to what they had to say and what they presented and no opportunity for us to challenge their credibility and we believe it was worthy of challenge. there were some communications that we had. >> reporter: the university president said the actions reported are troubling and, quote, we're looking into them. we're learn from them and we'll

take appropriate systematic actions based on what we learn n. san jose, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. a gps tracker could be the key in a case against a man accused of setting a massive wildfire in lake county. the gps device that investigators putin side of his vehicle placed him at the scene of the wildfire about a minute before it started. this is according to an investigation summary. he is accused of starting 16 fires, including the clayton wildfire on august 13th that destroyed 189 homes. he pleaded not guilty today to arson charges. meanwhile, smoke from the gap fire near the oregon border is reaching the bay area. this is a picture of the smoke from nasa and the fire began august 27th. it has burned nearly 30,000 acres and is 65% contained. the air quality officials are issuing an advisory. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with that and today's hot weather which is not helping, sandhya. >> not at all.

santa clara mayor is asking the police union to work the game and you may recall they threatened to protest and now another person is weighing in on the controversy. dave louie is live with more on this busy day for the 49ers. david. >> reporter: very busy. and people are speaking out about this protest from the military veterans to president obama. but this is one voice that really counts. roger goodell said he does not agree with what colin kaepernick is doing. but that is not stopping the niners quarterback. kaepernick said when he is on the field, he focuses on football. he hasn't even talked about his protest with coach chip kelly. but he has with his teammates. some are reluctant to join him, he said. kaepernick talked to us in the locker room after practice. >> a lot of them have families to feed and i think that is a tragic situation where players aren't comfortable speaking what is on their mind and what is

>> reporter: well, larry, this controversial proposed issue has two yunons going -- unions against each other, the carpenter and the teachers. the board may decide to drop the sale altogether or it may decide to take it up for a vote next time they meet. adams middle school has been closed for seven years. the west contra costa school district has no plans to rebuild or retrofit the school. it has no money to take on such an expensive project. so instead, they've offered it to a charter school that is desperate for more space. here is what we were told back in may. >> it was built for 430 students and today we have 585 and next year we'll have 800 students here. >> by law the district has to provide caliber beta school and adequate facility, so the district thought it had a deal when caliber offered to pay for the entire cost to rebuild and retrofit the school.

an estimated $15 million. if caliber could buy the land for $60,000. here are the conditions of that sale. >> it is not condos or houses, it is not going to be apartment complexes. this is for a school. >> reporter: still, the proposed transactionin fury ated a number of parents and city officials. >> we're selling it at below market rate so we're doing the taxpayers a disservice by selling property at less than market rate. >> reporter: they have offered to build the school in construction codes and hire the carpenters union to do the work. union members came out to support the school. and caliber said if they go under, the property will go back to the district which will then have to assume what is left on the loan for the renovations. these latest conditions may be enough to convince the board to finally approve the project. in richmond, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news.

today apple introduced the long-awaiting next generation iphone. abc 7 news was in san francisco for the unveiling of the new iphone 7 and 7-plus. you could order the phones starting september 16th starting at $649. one thing is missing from the phone. and that is the headphone jack. apple wants to you buy the new wireless air pod headphones that work through a bluetooth connection and this is getting mixed reviews. other new features include a home button that gives a physical vibation when you press it. it is water and dust resistant and have stereo speakers and the longest battery life of any iphone so far and major improvements with the main camera and the so-called selfie camera. >> the new face time hd camera for the selfies an the face time calls, this is up from five megapixols. >> stock in nintendo soared after a new game app for the iphone. apple unveiled a new version of

considering banning those phones on flights. >> that could affect sales. michael finney is here with more on that. michael. >> a lot is going on with this phone. it is just coming out. samsung recalled millions of phones because a slight chance they could catch fire during charge. but the recall was not done in cooperation with the consumer product safety commission. that would have triggered a ban on those phones on airlines. now the faa is considering whether to begin its own process to prohibit those phones on flights. for now, you could still take your note 7 on board a plane despite the risk. but four ounces of toothpaste, no way. so what should you do if you own a galaxy note 7. if you are worried about your battery, take it to a samsung store and the company said only a tiny fraction of batteries are at risk. if you do charge your phone, don't leave it unattended. samsung will exchange note 7 photos with new smartphones and galaxy s-7 and the edge and they are setting up a process for

keep calm, your internet's on. we have an update on the breaking news out of oakland. city leaders just announced they are firing four police employees and disciplining eight others as a result of the investigation into a ongoing sex scandal. this centers around the officers surrounding an escort who had sex with proiolice officers, several while underage. the four officers committed attempted sexual assault and contributing in prostitution and some failed to report violations of officers an one officer is going through retraining. we'll have much more on a live report on abc 7 news at 6:00. the north bay smart train is planning a food and drink service with an emphasis on local brands. according to the press democrat,
