shorts weather. at the coast, unfortunately still near 60 degrees. this evening sunset is at 7:24. it's going to be a gorgeous night out with clear conditions at 7:00 p.m. there is a temperature tumble coming up and i'll have that shortly. chris? >> frances, thank you. a 4-year-old boy is dead and a woman under arrest for felony dui. the child was in the back seat of a disabled vehicle in san ramon. >> reporter: the boy was pulled from the mangled wreckage of his mother's car. the family was waiting for gas on the right hand side of the roadway near the bollinger canyon road exit. around 6:20, the california highway patrol received the call that a white toyota sequoia is

slammed into the back of the stalled car. paramedics transported two other children from the car as well. a 12-year-old boy and a nearly 2-year-old girl were taken to children's hospital in oakland but are okay. the mother is currently being treated at john muir medical center. the family says she has a broken back, ribs, and other severe injuries. the driver of the suv was also transported for her injuries but no word on her condition. chp shut down the lanes to investigate but by 9:00, all lanes have reopened. katie utehs, abc 7 news. 18-year-old ilayshia mccoy died after being shot to death on monday. mccoy had been going to the teen center since seventh grade. mourners wrote notes to her and talked about the positive person

she had become and were looking forward to seeing her as a mom. >> she truly wanted to succeed in life. i know that she had a lot of dreams and aspirations about being with her daughter. >> it hurts. i was really looking forward to be able to hold the child at some point. >> mccoy had plans to become a mentor at the peacekeepers and talked about maybe becoming a police officer. criminal charges have been filed against more than half a dozen east bay officers for their involvement in that widespread police sex scandal. five of the men charged are or were oakland police officers. another worked at livermore police and another was in the contra costa sheriff's office. the range of charges include lewd acts in a public place, engaging in an prostituti prostitution, and obstruction of justice. abc 7 news report elissa harrington has more. >> we left no stone unturned. >> reporter: after a months long

investigation, scouring thousands of texts, pictures, and facebook messages, seven bay area cops will be charged in a sex scandal. the woman at the center of the case, a teenager known as celeste guap who district attorney nancy malloy calls "miss a." >> the actions of a few have really shown a very negative light on the hard working men and women who come to work every day as police officers. >> reporter: five of those being charged are linked to the oakland police department. officer brian bunton, for felony obstruction of justice and engaging in prostitution. warit uttapa, for searching for data without permission. giovanni loverde for felony oral copulation with a minor. tyrell smith will be charged for making searches without permission. and leroy johnson, for failing to report sexual misconduct against a minor. also charged, ricardo perez at the sheriff's office and dan black of livermore pd.

both have resigned. o'malley says there's evidence some officers had sexual encounters with the victim in other counties where she has no jurisdiction. >> we are waiting to see what the outcome of that investigation is and we'll make our own evaluation. >> reporter: in a statement the president of the oakland police officers association says the actions of a few are disappointing. elissa harrington, abc 7 news. oakland's mayor released a statement saying, it's clear that consequences of poor judgment and bad behavior can end careers and shatter lives. the oakland police department is holding another forum to hear from the public on what they see in the city's next police chief. oakland has been without a chief since june, when the former chief resigned followed in quick order by the two appointed chiefs. in all, three chiefs in eight

days. deputy chief david downing is now acting assistant chief. today's forum is at 12:00 p.m. at the high school on myrtle avenue. a former san francisco 49er, bruce miller, made a court appearance yesterday. he's facing felony assault charges after he allegedly beat up a 70-year-old man and his 29-year-old son. the 4ers released miller from the team earlier this week. abc 7 reporter melanie woodrow has the story. >> reporter: bruce miller would not talk about what led to his arrest. do you remember what happened that night? do you want to say anything? >> i'm just not at liberty to talk about it right now. there's an investigation going on. >> reporter: sundays are for the boys, miller posted to instagram over the weekend. 11:50 sunday night, a manager at a restaurant said miller tried to take customers' food. a woman gave us this cellphone video. >> you're tripping, dude.

we're just trying to be here. >> reporter: a manager escorted him out. >> we don't even know who you are. we have no issue. keep on keeping on. >> reporter: he allegedly tried to get into a 70-year-old's room at the marriott. when the man's son told miller he had the wrong room, miller allegedly charged at him, then punched and assaulted his 70-year-old father with a cane. >> this is a major embarrassment, not only were they visiting the city and unfortunately convivictimized, this is a clear case of elder abuse. >> reporter: video captured him later. his forehead was blooded. a motion to increase his $178,000 bail was denied. the court ordered miller to stay away from the victims. his arraignment was moved to november. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. a san francisco woman is in jail this morning after police say she slammed her skateboard

into the back of an officer's head, cracking his helmet. monday night police said 21-year-old rear have a rideout attacked the officer at fifth and mission. he was standing at his bike. she walked up and swung her skateboard at his head. after being head, he was able to grab the suspect. he was treated for injury but not seriously hurt because of the bicycle helmet. the police expo will continue following the arrest of two dozen protesters yesterday. abc 7 news was there in pleasanton as the demonstrators chained themselves together on friday. other protesters blocked traffic. the conference trains police to prepare for disasters. demonstrators want the event stopped. they say it militarizes police and is a factor in deadly police shootings. >> we believe that true safety comes from building up community resources and practices, alternatives to policing. >> it's hard for me to understand why you wouldn't want police, fire, paramedics to be

welcome back, everyone. time right now is approaching 8:15. a live look outside from our golden gate bridge camera. you can see the fog is out covering the top half of the bridge. frances returns in a little bit with the full accuweather forecast. last night in san luis obispo a candlelight vigil was held in memory of 19-year-old kristin smart, who disappeared in may of 1996. last week sheriff's officials launched a new dig and found what they called several items of interest. smart retains a strong pull on the community. there is a memorial in her name in the park overlooking the ocean. the consumer product safety commission announced that anyone with a samsung galaxy note 7 should turn it off and stop using it immediately. as abc 7 news reporter katie

marzullo explains from san jose, this follows dozens of fires and explosions. >> it was very surprising to me how quick the dash caught on fire. once it got the dash here, it started exploding. >> reporter: nathan says his samsung galaxy note 7 was charging in his jeep cherokee when it caught fire. the consumer product safety commission now telling note 7 owners to power down their phone immediately. don't charge it, don't use it. >> this is one of their flagship, high end phones. >> reporter: this bay area technology analyst says not all note 7s are the arit risk. >> it's only on some of them, because not all the batteries came from the same factory. >> reporter: still, he says, no reason to take a chance. samsung is offering replacements or refunds. the cspc is working with samsung on an official recall.

oakland, 58. mountain view has hit 60 early on. san jose, 59. morgan hill and half moon bay currently at 54 degrees. you'll see clouds over the golden gate bridge and temperatures in the north bay are on the cool side. santa rosa, 52. napa and novato, fairfield in the mid-50s. concord and livermore climbing into the upper 50s. in the east bay hills, we're above those clouds. we'll see sunshine later on today, especially if you're not at the coast. temperatures will be bouncing up just a few degrees today. up today, down tomorrow. then sharply cooler by monday. so heads up for that. more seasonal late next week. here is what you can expect for this much cooler monday. our average high in san francisco is 70. on monday, it will be 60. in oakland, average 74. it will be 64. and san jose, the average of 83. well, it's going to be about 73. just get ready for that and have a jacket handy. it's going to be cool at the coast. half moon bay at 61 degrees.

san francisco, 64. oakland will be 70 today. we're actually near seasonal today, then warm inland. antioch one of the warmest, 92 for you there. wine country will be comfortable, grab a hat, plenty of sunshine for you, the high 79 this afternoon. here is a pretty view from the santa cruz beach boardwalk. we're looking at those great conditions. this afternoon, santa cruz will get a bit of a break from coastal clouds. they'll hit 70. most areas will be cool with a sea breeze of about 20 miles per hour. that's why temperatures there will mainly stay in the low 60s throughout the day. and also folks are heading to the mountain view art and wine festival. it's going to start off in the low 70s at 11:00. then by 7:00 this evening, things will cool down as well. the high will be in the upper 70s today. then you notice tomorrow just a little bit cooler, in the mid-70s. but also you'll need the sunscreen there. and temperatures will be kind of perfect in the t-shirt and

summit and lava is also flowing into the ocean to the east. this current eruption began in january of 1983. uc davis researchers are recruiting families for a new study that could unlock answers about the potential link between autism and genetics. the key now is getting enough participants. the study aims to recruit 50,000 families to get a bigger sample which researchers say would help them gain a better understanding of what triggers autism. families can enroll online and then mail their saliva collection kits to a lab. their dna is then analyzed stored for a study. >> once we understand the causes, we can work on more tayltai tailored treatments. >> researchers say they hope the study will solve mysteries about autism. still to come, 15 years after 9/11, the country pauses

yesterday the house passed a bill that would allow families of the victims of 9/11 to sue saudi arabia, which some worry will change longstanding international law about sovereign immunity. the new york police department is remembering its members killed on 9/11 as well as those lost due to 9/11-related illnesses. officers marched from broadway to the police officers memorial wall. 37 port authority officers and 343 members of the fire department were killed. commemorations will take place tomorrow at ground zero, at the pentagon, and in shanksville, pennsylvania, to honor 9/11 victims. they'll also take place around the bay area. look for local 9/11 remembrance events on our website, abc7news.com. the president is asking us to join him in remembering the victims of the attack. in his weekly address, he said, we stand with the survivors,

good morning, everyone. 8:40 is our time. here say live look outside from our mt. tam camera. the tower barely visible this morning because of the clouds. we do have a nice weekend on tap, but a cooldown is on the way. frances returns in a little bit to let us know about that. scientists in the east bay are doing earthquake research by digging deep into the earth. abc 7 news reporter jonathan bloom shows us how the digging will help us be better prepared for the big one. >> reporter: seismic researchers are digging deep. >> we know the hayward fault will do an awful lot of damage in the bay area.

but we don't know the exact degree. this helps us narrow it down a bit. >> reporter: they're drilling a hole that's not on the hayward fault but an adjacent one that we know far less about. >> it has the potential to behave like the fault in west napa which was thought to be effectively pretty quiet, and what we found out is it's not. >> reporter: the south napa quake was a sober reminder of why the work is being done. but the study began a year earlier. when cal state east bay imploded the seismically unsafe warren hall, they measured the shock waves with hundreds of little sensors all over the east bay. >> this gives us a 3d image, like an ultrasound image. >> reporter: now they'll do it again, with devices at the bottom of holes like this one. they plan to dig 30 holes, some as deep as 40 feet into the ground, then set off tiny explosions one at a time. >> we'll send teams out with backpacks. >> reporter: teams including

back the land but does want some answers. the expansion announced on wednesday is along the western side of the park. a nonprofit group bought the land from private owners and donated it to yosemite. a san francisco swimmer is attempting the longest solo swim ever recorded in california. kim chambers is swimming from sacramento to tib aron. she became the first woman to swim between the fair lawns and san francisco. it's expected to take her 48 hours to swim 93 miles. at last check she was swimming south of rio vista in the sack are a sacramento delta. the san francisco giants are sleeping in this morning after a long night in arizona. it took 12 innings but the giants finally pull it out. tomlinson singled to center. giants lead 7-6.

and will play in the finals. that's a wrap on morning sports. have a great weekend, everybody. i'm larry beil. if you have outdoor plans, i think you'll like this forecast, starting off with live doppler 7 showing us low clouds into the bay. things will change pretty quickly. a live shot from the exploratorium. it's currently 55 in san francisco, oakland 58, mountain view 61, san jose 69. from the east bay, we're finding a little bit of some breaks in the clouds right now. temperatures are on the cool side in parts of the north bay. santa rosa, 52. napa, novato, fairfield, all in the mid-50s. concord and livermore, climbing to the upper 50s. in san jose, you'll find more of those overcast conditions. temperatures are going to come up today, down tomorrow. and then sharply cooler for monday.

i'll tell you by how much. more seasonal late next week. here is the hour by hour cloud forecast animation. we'll see the biggest change by noontime. so 10:00, still some clouds along the bay into oakland, san leandro, maybe parts of san jose. by lunchtime pretty much all clear for everyone except at the coast. that's where they're going to stay there pretty much the whole day. that's why it's going to be cool. temperatures in half moon bay will only hit about 61. it will be breezy as well, into san francisco, 64. but nice as you head towards wine country. napa hitting 79 today. the warmest locations will be well inland or farther north. antioch, 92. san jose, perfect t-shirt and shorts weather at 82 degrees, plenty of sunshine there as well. if you're heading to san francisco, there are a lot of events. traffic will be pretty busy. you'll need to grab a jacket. the breeze will pick up this afternoon at the girl chocolate

festival. tomorrow, a few degrees cooler and also we've got the chinatown festival. here is how it plays out on monday. that's when we expect the much cooler weather, and very breezy conditions, as a weather system moves to our north. the areas in green are where we'll see a lot of 60s around the bay. and inland numbers, today we're in the 90s. by monday we're only going to be in the mid-70s. that's the areas of yellow. notice tuesday we'll still be below average. wednesday, that's when things start to bounce back. we'll see a little bit of orange, some 80s returning into the forecast. so minor warming by wednesday. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. we've got those morning clouds, a little bit of fog at the coast. a warmer afternoon with temps climbing into the low 90s around the bay. comfortable, in the upper 5770s. we start to cool down tomorrow
