>> thanks for joining us. it is a disaster, locked in a fight with the iphone. if you have one samsung phones, you really need to take action. jonathan bloom is in the newsroom to explain your options. >> reporter: dan, samsung had sold a million of the phones before reports surfaced that the battery inside was overheating and in some cases exploding. they asked for the phones back, but at this point more than 800,000 are still in the hands of consumers. they say anyone who still has the phones are entitled to get their money back. >> today, we are announcing the official recall of one million samsung galaxy note 7 smartphones. >> the announcement was almost immediately followed by an impassioned plea from samsung. >> if you have not yet replaced your original note 7, please, please power it down and return it. >> samsung says it has collected

130,000 of the defective phones, blamed with starting fires. >> it is scary. honestly, my daughter has a samsung. if that were to happen to my daughter, like, yeah, it really is scary. >> the note 7 was supposed to be a hit with consumers. >> it is a cool phone. it looks nice and kind of wanted it because no one has it. they said they're not allowed to sell it. in return, they sold me this other one, that doesn't explode apparently. >> that family bought a house full of note 7s. >> if you haven't returned yours yet, you have the option of a new phone or refund. >> because this product presents such a serious fire hazard, i'm ush using all consumers, all co consumers, take advantage of this recall right away. >> other samsung models causing fires. >> it was plugged in and i see flames.

from more victims. >> these were the officers engaging in sex trafficking, and i was part of the same group that jasmine is part of. >> reporter: abc 7 news reached out to richmond police department about these allegations, a spokesperson said they are not commenting any further. meantime, the al media county said they'll face criminal charges, though the d.a. has noid said when the charges will be filed. in an email statement, the attorney general spokesperson said our office will continue to engage with local wllaw enforcement on the case. melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> santa clara deputies have arrested a 19-year-old man for beating an elderly woman. the 88-year-old victim, known as miss flo is fighting for her life at a local hospital. investigators said it happened on monday, and arrested zachary cuen for the crime last night.

california last year, if you can believe that, that's a quarter of the state's traffic deaths and 17% higher than ten years ago. people in several san francisco neighborhoods are worried tonight because of thieves targeting mailboxes. somehow they got ahold of a master key. they're concentrating on the area you see highlighted on the map. carolyn tyler has the story. >> reporter: a new credit card swiped from his mailbox. another tenant told his his bank statements were taken. this couple is calmly seen entering the apartment building three times last month. >> i mean, basically they have a key to our building. >> reporter: police beef it is stolen or counterfeit master key, used to buzz themselves and grab whatever they want from the mailboxes. they say other buildings have also been hit. >> they're on the lose. there is a key out there that
